  • Duke Wins Kogarah Derby!

    mack

The rescheduled Sydney Derby at Kogarah Oval ended the same as the first at the Western Sydney Stadium, with Mitch Duke scoring the only goal to give the Red & Black part of Sydney all three points and bragging rights.

Western Sydney Wanderers started the match well, looking sharper and faster in the opening 15 minutes, forcing several corners and putting the hosts under pressure. The best chance early came from a Mitch Duke long shot, it deflected and luckily for Sydney FC, it looped over the crossbar for a corner. Nicolai Muller for the Wanderers and Adrian Cacerers for Sydney FC both had their own long rage efforts.

On 30 minutes Muller nearly opened the scoring. He drifted onto the left flank at a throw-in, picked up the ball from Sullivan, took a touch before launching a curling shot that had Redmayne beaten but couldn't drop fast enough and instead smashed into the crossbar. 37 minutes into the game Luke Brattan fired a long range free kick just wide of Daniel Lopar's right hand dive and out for a goal kick. Not longer after Daniel Georgievski mishit a cross that had Andrew Redmayne worried at potentially having bought the ball back across the goal line, but with no goal line technology there was no VAR intervention.

The Wanderers ended the half with a good counter-attack, Muller flying down the right wing and delivering a cross into the middle. Duke had dreams of a repeat of his flying header in the first Derby this season, but he didn't get great contact and it went wide. Sydney FC had one last attack down their right wing, but Barbarouses put the chance wide as well.

Sydney FC started the 2nd half stronger, with several shots that did little to trouble Lopar. Bruce Kamau walked off the pitch and was replaced by Tate Russell due to a groin injury. On the hour Sydney FC attacked down their left wing, Le Fondre crossing from the edge of the area to Milos Ninkovic, and his header went well wide when he should have at least hit the target.

15 minutes from full time Simon Cox should have opened the scoring. A ball from Tate Russell went all the way through the penalty area to reach Cox 10 yards out, his first touch was poor and he took far too long to get a shot on goal, by the time he did he had been closed down and it was blocked. From a follow up corner Schwegler blasted an audacious volley over the top of goal.

The Wanderers had taken everything Sydney FC had thrown at them in the second half, and in the 82nd minute Duke the Captain stood up and gave his side the lead. Tate Russell sent a cross into the area, Duke was retreating to make contact and it was very good contact, going back across goal and giving Redmayne no chance.

With time running out the 2nd flashpoint was a disgraceful tackle from young Sydney FC substitute Marco Tilio. He launched himself into a late, studs up lunge into the ankle of Daniel Georgievski, and as they tangled up on the ground Georgievski's leg grazed the young players chin and he reacted by rolling around the turf like he'd been shot. After an interminable VAR check, Georgievski was sent off and nothing was done about the awful tackle that instigated it.

Unsurprisingly, Sydney FC mounted immense pressure on the Wanderers goal, but the league leaders couldn't find a clear sight at goal and the game ended with them losing their second Sydney Derby of the season. The result sees the Wanderers unbeaten in all 4 games of the Jean-Paul de Marigny era, and rocketing up the A-League ladder to within 2 points of 6th place.

The Wanderers play Brisbane Roar in Brisbane on Friday 6th March, kick-off at 8:30PM Sydney time.

I've got an Adelaide mate who's been to two games. Last year's RBB Adelaide TOD and yesterday's Derby. Both times Active have walked out in a blaze of pyro. Both times we've won and not seen the winning goal. Both times he's faced an overwhelming police presence. He thinks it's always this good. But we know it's distorted thinking based on limited experience. Sigh.

Thanks to WSW people now hold up their postcodes at matches.

WSW have united the West like never before.

All ESFC have done since 2012 is given their members another outlet to look down on the West, like they do in their daily lives.

    Tifo fail once again.

I'd love the postcode thing to be done again at the next derby.

I know we've done it before, but it would reinforce our Westy passion, and prove to the East that they are a distant entity that we, west of the Pacific Hwy/Chatswood/Redfern/Kogarah don't give a shite about that part of our city.

RBB tarnishes glorious night for Wanderers

Fans who lit flares at the A-League derby face bans and possible prosecution, but organisers and police are broadly happy with the first clash between Sydney FC and the Wanderers to be held at Jubilee Stadium.

Western Sydney’s delight at winning their second derby of the season was tarnished by the lighting of a number of flares inside and outside the ground, and a brief standoff between a small group of supporters and police near the end of the game.

It’s understood two fans who lit flares and one who carried them inside the ground have been identified, and face five-year exclusions from all football matches once CCTV examination is complete.

Among the 14 ejected was one of the Red and Black Bloc’s “capos” or leaders for standing on a seat, and a group fans left in sympathy — ironically, just before Wanderers captain Mitch Duke scored the winning goal in the 1-0 victory.

Security staff remove a flare during Friday night’s derby.

But police confirmed no arrests were made throughout the night, among a crowd of 18,501, and A-League boss Greg O’Rourke said the security review of the game would focus on weeding out the handful who were responsible for the flares.

“We will review the reports on Monday as we would post any derby and then determine if we require further action,” he said in a statement.

“Whilst we are disappointed to see flares at the match, any consequences will be directed to individuals identified with flares through our normal banning process.”

The win lifted Western Sydney to within two points of the top six, at least until the end of the round, reigniting hopes of making the finals.

“There's no set ceilings, there's no particular goals,” interim coach Jean-Paul de Marigny said.

“I don't want to be boring but it's all about one game at a time and getting the boys to believe in each other, which they do, and getting close to each other, which they are.

“They're ticking all the boxes and it's great to see players expressing themselves and maximising their ability.”

Did you view the original tackle as a straight red? It looked to me like a clear example of serious foul play - lunge, unecessary force and fair chance to injure opponent.

Thoughts from you prydz & other refs paul? Unlimited?

With Faghani in the middle, I don't think he was going to give that as a straight red. This isn't KGJ who sends off Saba for a badly timed ankle tap.

Looking at it again (it's around 3:45 in the highlights on the A-League website), I'm gonna back Faghani's decision. Yes, he lunges but it appears to be at ball height and it's only one leg. It's more late than anything.

I think there is a  case for signing a manager for next season pretty soon, with Macarthur coming in and competing in the player market. We really have to get a move on with resigning the players we want to retain, and having the managerial situation sorted will make the decision clearer for the players. Certainly if we win 2 of our next 3 against Roar, City and the 3rd derby, I'd be signing JP. The foreign coach experiment has failed for us and does not have a good track record across the league. I doubt there will be many better local options than JP. As other's have said, signing JP would give us stability, as he knows the set up and players.

I agree sign J,P.D. now he already got the runs on the board, he know the players, players have confidence in him and he understand the A League how it is run, let him settle the ship so far so good.

Sounds good, a quick look at the cove's twitter account and seeing hashtags such as **** the west and west scum shows which part of the city they represent.

and they wonder why a lot of the west never supported esfc, to be fair that is just one of the reasons :P

A proper journalist may have wondered why a capo got thrown out for standing on a seat when it’s done all the time, or why none of the cove were thrown out for doing exactly the same thing during the game. Maybe ask some questions, do some investigating, you know, journalist stuff.

Anti smurf rhetoric isn't part of the media metrics...anti west only.......because,you know....we're the baaaaaaaaaaaadies.

    Re Georgies red.

Guy is on his back trying to get up after tackle, player between his legs, leg in the air.

I challenge anyone to get up from this position without extending the leg forward.

Id like to see pics of the kids face to see just how much contact had been made. Didn't look like there was even a scratch there on the night. Which may be why we kept falling over as we forgot to wear studs.

There was a slight deliberate action that moved towards his neck/face that meant he was always going to get sent, sure not a lot of (if any) contact but even no contact he would of went.  Seems like a top bloke DG and bleeds for the cause but he is prone to a brain explosion and a few weeks off wont hurt us as his last few weeks have not been good and he can refresh.

Be interesting to see who we play there though, Tate will fill one side and  if Kamau is fit would love to see him on the left cutting inside with those runs could cause problems for teams but if Almight Bruce is not fit will be interesting Ziegler, Tass, Jurman, McGowan cannot play wide, Wilmering, Elrich gone so JP might need to make a decision around a youth product or someone like Muller, Duke, Sullivan or even Adam,

Cordier had one game at Left Wing Back last season against Adelaide in the first attempt by MB at 3 ATB.

Possible to do if ...you put your left leg in then your left leg out (twice) then shake it all about... ok, ok. No need to get narky, I know my way out.

I love how they write ‘capo’ as if it’s some dangerous, foreign term to be cautious of lol

The bald guy in the blue shirt with the chinos and dress shoes who appeared to be head of venue security had the shits cause of the fence situation. As I said in the security thread, most of the fences were hanging on by a bees dick anyway so the slightest contact was always going to cause some sort of damage. It was hilarious watching him bring over the temp fencing which did absolutely nothing cause it couldn’t be placed close enough and kept falling over.

I was off to the left of the RBB where he standing right in front of me and I could see him just pointing randomly at people in the crowd with his offsiders. Seemed like he worked out who/what a capo was and spitefully ejected him as an up yours to the collective for damaging the fence. Where I was, pretty much most people were standing on their seats so I don’t see any other reason why they chose to do that...

Bossi, you are a complete flog.

I have a feeling that if they'd won he wouldn't have written all those incidents.....   which translates into major SALT.

I was in the second row directly to the right of RBB and the guy right in front of me spent the entire match kicking the fence. So the state of it could possibly be described you've described. I genuinely don't understand why. Kicking the shite out of the fence for two hours for what purpose? Why does this person want to damage property?

I'm no party pooper, i dont want to rain on anyones parade. And i was chanting faaarrrk off east sydney on friday night with the rest. Passion is not a crime but some of the behaviour on friday night was, and i dont get it

Yep, Mathieu has been playing LB (his natural position) in the NPL trials of late.

He'll fill in at LWB, unless Bruce recovers & then a decision will need to be made as to whether he or Tate starts on the left
