  • Finals Hopes Extinguished

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers faint finals hopes have been snuffed out with another inept defensive performance that saw Newcastle score 3 times to cancel out goals to Rashid Mahazi & Keanu Baccus to run out 3-2 winners.

While Newcastle would have had a slim hope of making the finals even with a defeat, for the Wanderers it was simple, win or start preparing for next season. They began the first half very strongly, the midfield combination of Baccus & Mahazi dominating the Jets and setting up the likes of Baumjohann, Duke, Yeboah & Riera for numerous assaults on the Newcastle goal, that the visitors were unable to breach until right before the half-time break. A silly foul on the edge of the penalty area against Baumjohann let the attacking midfield swing in a cross in a corner like position, Newcastle completely ignored the run of Mahazi and he glanced a header into the net.

Newcastle adjusted in the second half and eventually equalised on the hour mark. A total lack of marking from Raul Llorente and Tarek Elrich let Roy O'Donovan pick up a ball inside the penalty area, he turned and aimed a sidefoot shot past Vedran Janjetovic.

Newcastle took the lead on the back of another dismal howler from Janetovic. Adding to his tally of schoolboy errors this season, from a Dimi Petratos corner fired straight into the near post, Janjetovic got his body position completely and utterly wrong, managed to do nothing more than punch the ball into the side netting.

Keanu Baccus continued his good season with a wonder strike not more than 4 minutes after going behind. A brilliant solo effort, picking up a layoff from Roly Bonevacia, the central midfield took two touches to aim in on goal before launching a rocket into the roof of the net giving Glen Moss zero chance at even touching the ball.

Both sides pushed for a winner and it ended up being Newcastle who scored it in the 82nd minute. A horror mixup on a ball that both Elrich & Hamill could have cut out resulted in the pair effectively tackling each other, the ball dribbled into the path of substitute Angus Thurgate and he lashed it homeward for a 3-2 win to Newcastle.

The Jets keep their slim hopes of a finals run alive, while the Wanderers are almost certain to finish in 8th spot behind Newcastle and in front of Brisbane & Central Coast.

Western Sydney play Sydney FC next week at Homebush Olympic Stadium on Saturday night at 7:50pm.

    Bingo. We have a winner.

No wonder our defence was terrible. Our GK and two CB's decided as adults and professional football players to eat a kebab three hours before the game. Boggles the mind.

This Kebab story reminds of when my team played in the state cup a few years back, out in the shire somewhere, backing up after our Saturday game, it was the next day after we had an FA cup night out with an open bar in Glebe

half the team turned up Kebab in hand straight from king st Newtown, (king of Yeeros for all you kebab fans) the other half raided the canteen of its sausage roll supply.

While a bunch of shire types ran round around cones in matching tracksuits. apprarently their club had given them the Saturday game off to train.

after having the first shot of the game we got done about 13 nil

Elrich was pretty good in the first half, immense even. second half did look like kebab fatigue though.

Perhaps it was the lack of carbs in the Lebanese bread, next time I think they should go for the double instead of just the single. 1 piece = 1 half. Perhaps just go with a HSP & those chips are the missing piece to the puzzle.

I also feel another factor to consider is the low fat content used to cook the meat. Being from Newcastle, I don’t know if they have the technique down pat, clearly don’t have experience or traffic of the many Sydney kebab houses. Not enough fat so they’ve burnt it off all in the first half.

You need to take your pre match meals seriously, underestimating the lack of carb & fat content here has hurt the boys. They’ll learn for next time.

We go again for the derby this week.

We should ask Waterson what a pregame kebab might do to elite performance.

Yeah I think we need to get a professional opinion on this from someone qualified.

I’m sorry but am I the only one who thinks that the kebab is getting a little too much attention

If we are blaming defeats on kebabs then I think we are really grasping at straws

I had a freaking meat pie on the weekend before my game I played a blinder!

All be it quite a lower level haha

I don’t have a problem with the kebabs either tbh, I could think of much worse things to be eating before a game. It was 3 hours before kick off too, it’s not like they came running on for the warm up with one in hand

Kebab gate - we are entering into uncharted territory. What I think is equally important here: did they have a dump before the game?

Three squaddies linking up with a winger as RB, with a so called goalkeeper behind them - this makeshift defense held against City. It didn't against Jets. Also: as soon as Treejack came off the game changed.

I really think we should SKIP this, especially as I'm trying to eat my breakfast.

I agree, and I won't be asking the question if anyone has "heard" anything...

It's just like the harbour cruise incident, people are rightly questioning if they even give a ****.

Not really. What they have for lunch is a very different issue to them going on a cruise the day after a loss.

Besides, whose to say that they’re not all smashing a bowl of easy Mac before a game every other week? Seeing them eat a kebab is great and all but without comparison to what they normally eat, I don’t see how it can be even suggested as a point of blame.

Yeah... people defending kebab gate; at the end of the day they are professional athletes and their body is their livelihood. The epitome of unprofessional conduct is your club captain and 2 other senior members eating one of the most unhealthy foods there is before they go to work for the day. The captain part infuriates me the most because your "leader" and I say that sarcastically because Hamill is anything but a leader and I still don't know why he's captain is supposed to set the standard and example. Disgusting behaviour all around.

I wouldn't say the most unhealthiest food lol alot better than maccas/kfc but still agree, not something you should be eating before a professional game.. Does the club even have nutritional specialist looking after the boys diets??

Maybe they know their time is coming to an end with the club so they just don't give two f**ks anymore and have already started their off season eating habits early?

Was speaking to someone who works in Football, he said that it isn’t as big a thing as it is made out to be.

Said they probably hadn’t organized lunch or didn’t have anything to eat, so went with a kebab. Had we won the game would it have been a big issue? No. Can you blame the kebab on all three players having howlers in the second half? No. As long as the players aren’t making this a habit pregame then not a big thing.

Yes... three blokes having a kebab killed the game for us...

I don’t know, at the end of the day Football comes down to 1%’ers. Nutrition is just one of those things professional athletes need to get there body right. Is it the reason they lost the game? Probably not, but in a season where so much has gone wrong & we needed everything to go right (to make the finals), a kebab prematch isn’t the way to go about it. I guess it says more about the players mental state than anything else.

My major questions are why hadn't the club arranged a lunch? They went to Newcastle the day before I believe.

Doing some quick Doctor Google research suggests an elite sports team should be eating a pre-game meal as a group roughly 4 hours before the game and that meal should be something like a smallish piece of chicken with rice & steamed vegetables, turkey or chicken on a wrap with vegetables, or a small amount of pasta with beef mince & tomato, then a small low fat snack 2 hours before the game like yogurt or a fruit smoothie, and just prior to the match a quick digestion carb heavy sports drink or gel.

I'd put it this way, I doubt Jerrad Tyson even if he was sitting on a 12 man bench for a friendly, with Neuer as #1 and De Gea as the first choice sub, would ever eat a sloppy oil drenched kebab from a random local shop as a pre-game meal. Imagine if the shop had poor food safety, or got a bad batch of meat, and we lost three players to food poisoning before the match.

“I’m lucky the Wanderers are a club that crosses all the Ts and dots all the Is in terms of supporting the players and I’m happy to help the next generation of players across Australia.”

That clearly isn't happening with these players.

Yeah it’s weird the club didn’t organise something. I’d have thought most away teams have a meal together before a match.

Also, wouldn’t giving the players free food be a smart way around the salary cap?

I’m pretty sure I read some years ago that some Italian cubs have even been known to go to a hotel the night before their home games so they can focus without distractions.
