    Foxe's Men Hunt Down Glory

    mack

Oriol Riera scored his first A-League goal for the Wanderers, with Jumpei Kusukami adding a second to help Hayden Foxe to his maiden managerial win as his side ran out 2-1 winners over Perth Glory tonight.

With Hayden Foxe taking over as caretaker from the departed Tony Popovic, the Wanderers lined up as expected in the same formation they've used since inception. The home side were well on top for the entire first half, but it took 42 minutes for the Wanderers to breach the stoic Perth backline. Alvaro Cejudo picked up a loose ball 25 yards out from goal, before threading a cute reverse pass for the #9 Riera. The big striker made no mistake with the calm right foot finish past Liam Reddy.

In the moments before half-time the Wanderers doubled their lead. With Perth failing to track back after losing possession from an attacking corner, Brendan Hamill galloped into an acre of space down the right flank, before passing through for Jumpei, who flashed a toe poke past the onrushing Reddy.

Oriol Riera could have had a hat-trick early in the second half. Chris Herd dinked a chip over the Perth defence that Riera could only snatch at the shot and put it well over the bar. Not longer after he put a head over goal again.

Perth came back as they always do, laying siege to the Wanderers defence and eventually profiting through a Wanderers own goal. Andy Keogh headed a cross in towards goal, taking an extremely harsh deflection off the knee of Hamill to take it past the despairing Janjetovic. The Glory kept attacking but were unable to penetrate the Wanderers goal of their own accord, giving the Wanderers a 2-1 win and their best opening to a season ever.

The Wanderers face the Central Coast next weekend on Saturday, 5:45PM kick-off at Sydney Showground.

Well, what a start to the Post-popa era!

Our 1st round 1 win of a season. These players looked hungry from the start. And that's a credit to all our coaching staff, past and present.

Just watched Foxe's post-match presso and was very impressed, too. (Though winning helps with that) ;)

Well done to everyone at Spotless tonight, on and off the pitch. On the sidelines, and in the stands.

Great to see our Spaniards working together for the first time.

Oh, and I've said it before, and I'll say it again -

    Jumpei S1>Castelen S1 and hoping -

    Jumpei S2>Castelen S2 (though I'm not expecting a hat-trick) :ninja:

Also, congrats to the new capo (replacement or fill-in?), who brought the same pumped up fun attitude from la banda to the capo stand.

And also to Baccus who started that second goal. He could have sent a long ball up, and was looking for one, but as soon as a bit of space opened in front of him he surged into it and then played a nice ball to get the counter-attack going.

Llorente, a wsw fullback with a pony tail..last time we had one of those he was a beast and Raul looks to be the goods. Cejudo and Riera together were enough to make me buckle at the knees. Throw in Roly and Baccus and that was me done...and we still have Risdon to return and King Bridge is back! It's all too much for me to handle. Good things to come from Herd I feel too. There is literally not a single weak position this year. In fact, id say there is 2 players for every position that would still make up a competitive side.

Always like that guys attitude when you see him around the stands. I don't think I've ever seen him without a massive smile on his face.

Good result but let's not get carried away with calling  for  Foxe to be manager after 7 days in charge and  one win !

It's early days but looks like the key factor is the import recruitment  . Riera , Roly ,Cujudo  Lloriente  and  2017 Jumpei (hopefully ) are  streets ahead of Dimas , Pinatares , Borda , Martinez and 2016 Jumpei .

The Aussie recruits also look good  Thwaite, Herd ,  Risdon and  Bridge Improving us in every position .

It's a funny game though we could have won 4-0 or drawn 2-2 and who would have thought Jumpei could play football ?

Has some sick tats too. He always is at full voice, truly an inspirational figure in the RBB imo.

What a load of garbage that was. While the player is under no obligation to leave from halfway next to the technical area under the laws of the game, there is nothing that allows the referee to bully a player into leaving the field of play in any particular location in order to benefit one side by having play resume faster than it might otherwise have done.

If the player is timewasting, give them a card and add on stoppage time. Not practically shove them off the pitch and force them to walk the entire way around the field. Pathetic refereeing.

According to the commentators the refs have been instructed to tell players to get off the other side if they're closer to get the game moving faster. Not the refs fault. FFA's fault.

Where’s Boris? And what made us change Capo’s?

Boris was back a few rows singing, chanting, fist-pumping and flag waving

Think you'll find its part of the RBB/WST 'peace in our time' love fest :)

To win an opening game at last was significant, but it was more the way we played in the first half that gave real hope for the rest of the season: more aggressive, forward play, twisting and turning to find players moving off the ball. This is the way football should be played. In fact, in that half we did not have a bad player.

Once we eased off in the second half and played the ball back more often, we started to see shades of the team we have known in previous seasons, one that too easily gave away leads.

However, there is real depth in this squad – certainly the best this club has ever had.

With Risdon to come back in and Bridge to gain fitness, with Llorente, Cejudo and Riero to become even more comfortable with their surroundings, we could have a very competitive and successful season. [Note to Robbie C.: Golden rule in heading…in defence you head up and out but in attack you head down… and away from the keeper.]

It was great to have WDWSF after 18 mins rather than left till much later.

Congratulations to Hayden Foxe and all the squad for handling the dramatic and unexpected coaching transition so well.

Actually they can be compelled as of 2004.

I’m actually shocked we beat Perth they got the best aleague squad on paper maybe Lowe’s got to go

I wouldn't say they are even close Kenny is just going made recruiting strikers and forwards. Same old Kenny, don't worry about defending, just try to outscore.

That showed last nigh. PG back line is absolute trash this year though I'll admit posco surprised me, that was the best game he's ever had.

Just a shame Warren injured himself. We could have put in 6 more if he'd been out there

Was a great first day and finally a nice solid win to start the season the first 60 odd minutes was as good as we have played in a long time.

What I really enjoyed was seeing the numbers of times we played one touched passes just over half way into the attacking third and the effectiveness for which we did it. You would have thought it was round 15 not round 1.

All the players look ready to go which is fantastic and exactly what we all hoped for and shows the importance of getting your recruitment done early on.

It was a little displeasing to see us 'turn off' somewhat to end the game and let them back in so there is some room for  improvement there for sure. Also the way we conceded was unacceptable, Keogh completely lost all defenders in the box by simply holding back no one stayed with him, I hope Pizza boy is giving it to them this morning!

Promising start now let's set the standard next 3 games all in NSW - so we can't ask for better platform to setup the season.
