  • Gombau Picks Up First Wanderers Win

    mack

The Gombau Era has kicked off in earnest with the Wanderers taking all 3 points against an ill-disciplined Central Coast Mariners outfit tonight in Gosford.

While the VAR will dominate the headlines after the Mariners finished the game with 9 men, the home side let themselves slip defensively before the referee was involved in the game and the Wanderers took advantage with two good goals. Josep Gombau elected to make 5 changes including bringing back talismanic striker Brendon Santalab, but his key decision was keeping young midfielder Keanu Baccus and he pulled the strings with a man of the match performance.

Near on the half hour mark the Wanderers took the lead. From a Mariners corner, the Wanderers broke down the left with Mark Bridge, he cut back inside & looked for one of the two free Wanderers players. His pass picked out Santalab, with three touches to bring the ball down & head toward goal he unleashed a long strike at goal that curled past Ben Kennedy at the near post. It was a just reward for the Wanderers who looked far better than the Mariners, and were clearly determined to bring some respectability back to the side after their 5-0 derby hammering.

The Mariners best chance of the half fell to Connor Pain who accidentally clipped a ball that nearly lobbed over Janjetovic only for the keeper to palm the ball away.

The Wanderers kept up the pressure after returning from half-time and they doubled their lead in the 49th minute. Keanu Baccus danced merrily around a couple of Mariners defenders before finding Bridge, moved it on to Santalab, and with a cutback found Alvaro Cejudo absolutely free in the penalty area. The winger-come-midfielder took a easing touch onto his left then his shot gave Kennedy no chance at a save.

While the Central Coast had the occasional foray into the Wanderers half their chances at getting a point from the match took a huge hit after a piece of defensive madness from Wout Brama. Having been kicking & shoving Roly Bonevacia all night, he tested the refrees patience one time too many with a studs up raking of the calf from behind. After initially giving the Mariner a yellow card, the VAR intervened to suggest that it could be worthy of a red card, and with the benefit of a pitchside replay, referee Alex King changed his mind & pulled out a straight red.

The night went from bad to worse for the hosts in the 77th minute. Fullback Jake McGing was beaten for pace by substitute Kearyn Baccus and his awful lunging challenge caught the midfielder in the ankle. Once again the VAR was in play, and King reviewed the footage and went once again to the back pocket to send off McGing & put the Mariners down to 9 men.

The Wanderers closed out the match comfortably, while some may have taken protest at their lack of initiative to seek a 3rd goal, after the start of the Gombau era the club simply needed little more than all three points and to get off the pitch without anyone else following McGing & Brama down the tunnel for an early shower.

From the moment the VAR was introduced it's opponents have been belittled and called "conspiracy theorists" despite the clear bias the VAR has shown to the FFA's favoured clubs Melbourne City & Sydney FC. Suddenly tonight however, despite the earlier game having a much clearer failure of the VAR to fix an incorrect handball, only once the Wanderers were the beneficiary of the VAR has the media & other members of the A-League community turned against the VAR. Instead of Josep Gombau receiving praise for picking his first win, the attention will be on two VAR calls that were down to the simple fact that two Mariners players forgot how to tackle properly.

In November when Cornthwaite was sent off for a clearly non-deliberate handball? We heard nothing. When Reira was pulled down in the box & VAR declined to award a penalty? Nothing. When Adelaide United scored with an offside player and VAR declined to overturn the goal? Nothing. When VAR missed Brosque handballing before awarding SFC a penalty? Nothing. When Milligan nearly broke Jumpei's leg and didn't receive so much as a yellow card that would have seen Melbourne Victory down to 9? Nothing.

Nothing. Until tonight, the only major criticism of the VAR from media & those at a "high place" in football stemmed from the time taking to review things. But tonight it was different. Perhaps this will be a catalyst for the VAR to finally be removed, and hopefully with the end of the current FFA regieme at the hands of FIFA, a new set of referees & bosses at the FFA who can stamp out the horrendous bias they show in their decision making.

The VAR is a blight on football and the trial should be immediately terminated.

Mack, even your usually even-handed report (typed with tongue firmly planted in cheek) was more about the VAR than the game.  A most entertaining first half in which a resurgent and much improved  Wanderers was able to lead Mariners who were playing the better football.  Enter the VAR which destroyed what could have been one of the better games we have been able to watch all year.  As Bosnich noted, without the use of the VAR some discussion at the end would have been over whether or not a red card was deserved for the tackle on Bonavacia.  As it is , the VAR will dominate discussion on this game.  When the trial period is over, this game should be held up as a good reason why the VAR should be dropped for anything other than goal line decisions and reviews after the game..

The final minutes were an absolute disgrace.  I'd be fuming if I had put some of my hard-earned on a 3 - 0 Wanderers' win.

Everyone is complaining about the VAR getting it wrong, but there are inherent problems even if it gets every call right! e.g stopping flow of the game, how far back the decisions can go if a goal is scored, changing the default setting of refs to "not making calls" etc.  It simply doesn't work for football.

Every single person following the game is saying the same thing - goal-line tech only - and yet the officials (and a couple of Foxsports cheerleaders) either can't or refuse to see it.

FFS all the fans of the team that just benefited from it are calling it out, as were some of the players! Surely that says enough.

Gombau out crew where you at? Thats right! Eat humble pie.

Our season starts here. Treble. You heard it first.

Don't know if you are serious or not, but please don't get people over excited about this win or make out like we are going on a winning run now. Because we are not. Next week if we lose people will get all paranoid because they read this and believed you.

Don't worry not serious ! No one is excited by that win . Relieved maybe but definitely not excited .

I feel like we only ever really turn up after some sort of adversity.

Popa leaves. Win round 1 for the first time ever. Get embarassed 5-0 in a derby. Win away, keep a clean sheet and score two goals after not scoring for a month.

The second was soft barely a yellow...but the first was a red for sure imo...raking studs up on the calf with the ball nowhere near should be a red every day of the week...except we see so much studs up garbage every week...so many cheap shots that when its blatant you get muppets like Slater talking about how everything is worse in slow motion (where was that logic for Cornflakes handball btw?), the VAR is a **** fight for sure - it just worked in our favour for once

On a positive...so happy for Santa - he deserved a good result and surprise a better team selection resulted in a better result

There were two sections to this game before and after the red card/s.

Before the cards....played well, took the fee chances and although not the best defensive displays it was enough.

The red cards. The 1st one I have no problem with it being red. Nowhere close to the ball and full intent.

2nd card nothing more than a yellow. There was studs contact but very minimal. (Llorente's one was only a yellow, foot started high but contact was on the ground and no studs.)

I think today after the first two games the VAR has lost some of the few remaining fans. At least in our game we were 2-0 up before the VAR but in the New/Adl game the VAR changed the result.

Great to get the win, we really needed that. Felt though if Mariners were to have scored first with their dangerous initial attacks, we would never have came back into that. But the game is all about ifs and buts so we move on. VAR is a farce as we all know. Though I felt the first was a red card and it was quite similar to the red which Pogba received recently. The second red wasn't even a yellow, disgraceful.

In saying that I fully agree with what we did in the final minutes. It was a act of respect towards our opponents who were unfairly reduced to 9 men. It would've been embarrassing for me to have put them to the sword. We scored 2 while it was 11 V 11, we were the better team overall and that's that. What we did was very respectful and is similar to in basketball when the winning team has already won the game and dribble the ball until the clock runs out

Once again we score our goals via COUNTER ATTACKS. Sick of all this sideways passing between the centre backs and so were many fans around me when the backline played constantly played it back to Vedran.

Also I don't get the hype because Risdon is too slow and overweight. He was getting absolutely butchered by Pain of all people, probably the slowest winger in the league. Constantly jumping in and got beaten 4 times to his right by the same player. How he makes the national team is beyond me. Neville was a horrible attacking fullback but defensively was always more than solid.

Okon's press conference is pretty delusional. He thinks that neither of the red cards were worth a send off, thinks his team had the better of the game, thinks that a tackle has to be "violent" apparently to be worth a red card, and to cap it off, thinks the FFA will overturn the red cards

If you want a reason to kill VAR, then forget the decisions tonight

Here's prime facie evidence for why we need to get rid of it

    Is that Joey Champness?

First one was a red referee should have given it without need for Var. Second one was soft. I think Okon might be waiting a while for either to be overturned

Didn't see the game, not much A-League coverage while I am here in South Africa. Good to see the Wanderers get a win, especially with a goal to Santa. Was the last 15 minutes as bad as everyone on facebook has been making out?

    Better.

Pressing much better than the way we invited the smurfs to pass the ball around.

Still some shakey moments at the back and lots of passing around without purpose but definitely better.

Having santa on the bench for the derby just boggles my mind. What a legend. He wound up that dutch wanker beautifully ;)

Kinda sad that big baccus seems to be in gombau's dog house for whatever reason but great to see mini baccus do so well - good on gombau for keeping faith in him.

VAR has no place in football - stand by what i said right back at the beginning - buzzer in refs ear for goal line stuff is the extent of the tech we need.

What a relief - game won that could have gone either way, by the sounds of it.

As Popa used to say: goals change games. Thank goodness for Santa, and thank goodness that we were two goals up before VAR and ref struck.

First Gosford away I missed. If it helps the team win then maybe I ought to not go to games more often.

Agree with all that. The pressing especially . Hunger was back yesterday. Hope we go again next week.
