  • Grand Final Bound Wanderers Lose To Mariners

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers capitulated to a pathetic 2-0 home loss against the lowly Central Coast Mariners this afternoon at Spotless Stadium.

After Tony Popovic's striker-less lineup spent 45 minute fumbling with the ball in midfield then the Mariners pounced in the second half with 2 goals to Roy O'Donovan. The Wanderers look devoid of shape and structure in the first half, with numerous occasions holding the ball in midfield 4 or 5 players crammed into the wing, leaving no-one in the middle to attack balls into the box or to make runs off the shoulder of the last defender. Mitch Nichols did little more than get his GPS tracking meters up, as his darting forward, sideways, backwards resulted in confusing the rest of the attackers and leaving them with no forward target.

If the first half was poor, the second was calamitous. Jonathan Aspro, who has been one of the more solid performers for the Wanderers this season gifted his opponents a chance from the penalty spot. As the Mariners lined up a corner kick, Aspro wrapped up Liam Rose in a bear hug and a mere 1 second after the corner was taken Kris Griffiths-Jones was pointing to the spot. O'Donovan blasted the penalty pasted Vedran Janjetovic to open the scoring in the 65th minute.

Brendon Santlab was finally bought on and he could not be the miracle man once again this season. He had two clear chances to put the Wanderers on the board, with one he put a diving header straight at Paul Izzo, and a second volleyed effort he put wide.

O'Donovan then sealed the points. The Mariners launched a somewhat aimless ball over the top of the Wanderers defence, and O'Donovan ran onto the ball and took advantage of horrendous positioning from Vedran Janjetovic to chip the ex-Sydney FC keeper into an open goal.

The Sydney Derby looms large next week, if the Wanderers lose then Popovic needs to resign or be sacked by the board. Enough is enough. Sentimentality does not win new trophies.

"We thought [the selection] worked well in the first half, we created chances. At the end of the day we didn't score, we can look at who played where, who did what, we did more than enough to win that game and we didn't win," Popovic said. [/size]

We did more than enough to win that game......yeah nahhhh.

I'm hoping reports that the RBB was being played through the stadium speakers aren't true.

Because that would be tacky and stupid.

And it should   f ck off, before it becomes a thing.

All true unfortunately.Don;t know if the club managment was trying to "enhance" the atmosphere, but it sounded horrible. The RBB are good enough on their own.

Too predicatable up front. Nichols as a striker was an attempt to have Antonis and Nichols on the same team and it failed there was zero fluency in attack. We never worried Mariners defenders and deserved to lose this game because the whole team played bad.

Was a pen for mine Aspro took a gamble and it didn't pay off.

Also for the 2nd what was Vedran so far out for especially when he had time to retreat once it was obvious Aspro wasn't getting close to Roy. Poor keeping for mine.

Overall many have said it same old story, all the ball and can't finish off.

Popa obviously wanted to rest santa for derby fair enough but why sign Griffiths and not play him from the start then? Very weird and just after Sotirio looks good he brings back the Jumpei magic show. Interesting lineup to say the least

    Can we win against ESFC

    no chance in hell

Will I be there to cop the hell

I wouldn't miss it for the world. The good, the bad and the ugly it's why i love football.

The Mariners had nothing - and it was enough!

How we went from "best performance of the season" last week to "one of the worst home performances of a full strength squad ever" is a mystery to me.

Or maybe not: too many passengers in the squad, hanging heads after the goal, lack of urgency when the task was to chase the game: Western Sydney Heartless.

    Unacceptable.

Before kickoff I thought that the crowd seemed louder than normal despite being small, I thought maybe it was just an echo or because we haven't been there for a while. I can only assume it's some kind of mistake because it's not a common thing in Australia, maybe they put the fox sports commentary through by accident, or a crowd mic that was meant for Fox was also put into the PA system.

I'm also looking forward to the awesome pitch at ANZ that has been covered for six days with floor matting, 40 degree heat for 3 of those, due to the fantastic Guns N Roses concert I attended on Friday.

I'm looking forward to staying at home next Saturday half watching the game on TV and not bothering to pass on my tickets for resale.

Maybe ask the club if the you can get a discount on membership if they are losing? I mean we should win every game we play  :P

Thats what it sounded like Megan. It was a time delay issue. We heard the chant in the speaker a second before hearing the actual rbb to my left. It was awful, jarring. I tried to join in and singg but kept losing the timimg of the chant. Not a fan. I like our atmosphere real. A mic at the rbb, fine. We dont need it piped thru.

It's so I can actually see the players on the pitch.  I'll come to all the Spotless game no matter how bad we get.  But ANZ can go **** right off.

If we were pumping crowd noise thru the PA then we have reached peak plastic.

I was watching the players mark up at the corner and specifically watched Apsro grabbing the Mariners player before the kick was even taken, he might as well have stuck up a flashing neon sign saying "award a penalty against me". The ref isn't under any requirement to warn a player that they are doing something punishable, and this wasn't a case of a 50/50 with both players holding on.

The ref was already watching him and took all of 1 second from the kick being taken to give the penalty.

Fair enough KGee I actually find ANZ better than Spotless i guess depends where your seats are.

On another note we have more entries in 1 hour in this thread than we had to 3 days after we won, humans are fascinating species. We seem more inclined to complain than rejoice. Maybe I should check out the philosophical thread :xnod:

I can't understand the selections. Its actually mind boggling

Our problem all year has been scoring and we start without a striker again ??

Santa scored 2 goals last week and this week he is benched ???

Substitutions today didn't make sense in context of the game

Whats been missing this year is genuine strikers. Our 2 other strikers were not even on the bench today

I thought the Wellington game was one of our better ones for this year so why not start with exactly the same side that got the points ?

Coaching staff has a lot to answer for this year in my opinion

They will latch onto anything and make a marketing gimmick out of it. I suppose it is the way the world is now or something. I don't know. Maybe I am behind the times.

Yes - good description of what it sounded like. I really don't know how the actual RBB chant came through AFTER the PA "echo"... but it did.

I hope never to hear that again - just awful.

    Well that ******* hurt.

Our first loss at Spotless, and it's to the Mariners!

Don't think that first goal should have been a pen, it looks like the Mariner player dragged Aspro down.

But with KGJ as ref, we can't let the opposite have even half a chance as he delights in punishing us. (And ignoring our oppositions foul play.)

Having said that, you can't win if you don't score.

We were clearly the better team for the first hour, creating chance after chance.

But without a starting striker, our players had no one person to single out to give the final ball to.

Time after time we attacked with a different player in a different position and just couldn't link up.

If we started with Santa, Scott or Griffiths we win that game.

The only thing that takes the sting away a little bit, is knowing that even with our poor season, and even after a forecast heatwave (that disappeared only this morning) we still draw a bigger crowd than our Invicible 'big brother'.

But even that is a small conciliation tonight.

Today is the first real time it has actually felt like a full-on plastic experience. Depressing. I've watched villa year in year out being total s*** so it isn't about winning or not winning. It's just about brand and ripping people off.

    Deflating experience today ....

    **** crowd

    **** performance

    **** coaching

**** decision enhancing the RBB chants

The end of season will be interesting to see how many members decide that :

    **** venues

    **** team

    **** coach

    **** effort

    **** coach

Is just not worth it for another 2 years
