  • Great Scott!

Lachlan Scott marked his debut with a brace and Mitch Nichols scored a 25 yard thunderbolt to defeat Wellington 3-2 in Campbelltown tonight.

On an awful night in front of 3,212 fans Wellington took best to the wintry, rain soaked conditions early on. Perhaps spurred by the trio of away supporters with the weather feeling just like home, Wellington came storming out of the blocks as they benefited from their heavier pre-season schedule. After only 9 minutes the Phoenix took the lead in fortunate circumstances, Hamish Watson getting lucky as his mis-hit shot looped off his standing foot and over the stranded Andrew Redmayne. Kosta Barbarouses began his pro career in Wellington, his second stint began with a goal on debut. He combined with Matthew Ridenton to latch onto a ball behind the Wanderers defence, before beating Neville then chipping over Redmayne.

The Wanderers were back in the contest 5 minutes from the break, as young gun Lachlan Scott, handed a Wanderers first team debut after excelling at NPL 2 level, scored a real poachers effort after Steven Lustica had knocked the ball across the 6 yard box. Lustica was making his debut for Western Sydney, and was immense in the first half after being deployed in an unfamiliar left wing role he created havoc and was unlucky to not score a goal himself before he exited the contest in the second half.

Once the second half began the momentum was all Wanderers, and it didn't take long for them to draw level. Scott popped up once again in the 47th minute. Wellington couldn't clear their lines from a Scott Neville cross, the ball fell for Lustica, who tapped a very short pass to Nichols, the attacking midfielders first touch setup a simple tap-in for the young striker who couldn't miss from 6 yards.

There was only going to be one winner after the Wanderers equalised, and it was the imperious Mitch Nichols who put his side in front. Running at the defence, Nichols turned to goal, took two touches before unleashing a trademark screamer from 25 yards out, it gave the keeper no chance at all. Wellington looked dead and buried and despite showing the fight typical of any Ernie Merrick side, they created few chances as the Wanderers strangled the tempo of the match.

Western Sydney will go into the pots for the Round of 16, along with sides such as Brisbane Strikers, Melbourne City, but not the Central Coast Mariners, who conceded a 40 yard wondergoal in stoppage time to lose 2-1 to Green Gully. Several big name teams will be in action tomorrow night and against on the 10th of August.

Like how we juiced the clock in the last 10. Killed the momentum of the game. But we got sloppy in stoppage time for whatever reason. Should never have whipped that corner in for instance.

Dimas is just gonna run the joint this year. Commands the ball and uses it so well. Nicholls will run riot in the spaces ahead of him.

I really hope Kusukami is a success wide right. I think I would still prefer Sotirio coming on later running at tired defenders.

I'd like to see where Lustica fits in all of this. He showed his quality tonight, but he is not suited in the Fathead role.

    Great game.. from the 40th.

Wow, so we beat an almost full strength Nix team with a pretty underpowered reserve style side with Scott never even playing at this level. I gotta say Nix looked dangerous from the get go but completely fizzled out in the second half, was fearing another Valentine's Day massacre.

Barbarouses scares the **** outta me whenever he's in the box. Seriously, quality player.

Nichols. Please never leave. Hilarious that Glen Moss was beat again by the exact same screamer he scored at home in the 5-2 game, looked pissed off.

    - Dimas was astounding.

    - Nichols, Baccus and Neville (except for Nix's 2nd) were very good

    - Really impressed with Lustica's first hitout in Red & Black

    - Scott positioning himself in the area where we've screaming for our 9 to be in for 4 years

    - Sotirio again had a decent match, but again struggled in the final 3rd

    - we defeated a full strength team with a number of non starters. Worth keeping that in mind

Pretty decent performance given the stage of the season we're in.

Dimas brilliant, as he was for most of the 2nd half of the season.

Baccus looked really good, he's a class player when he's confident. I hope he gets a decent run at the start of this year, could be a really useful player if he gets going.

Dare I say Sotirio looked decent, a lot of nice turns, pacy as usual.

Scott brilliant, physically left nothing lacking, eye for goal.

And the return of Shannon Cole on free-kicks!

Dimas and Bruno will be the benchmark of the aleague this year

Very impressed by lustica he played very smart

Nichols is called King Mitch for a reason he was very good and what a guy giving the young Lachlan Scott his 2nd goal on a plate , could of easily kicked it in himself

Nts and aspro looked abit sluggish no calls for concern just yet

And some of the forward passes Baccus was threading where very good but a few passes in around the back 4 where sloppy from him a better team would of punished him for it

Overall it was a good early season hit out hopefully We draw a home game in the next round

Very impressed with lustica. Retained possession in a number of tight spots, skinned his man a few times and worked hard closing down.

Made a few poor final ball decisions but overall he looks a much better player than I remembered.

Good signs overall. Desparately need to sign a winger though - we will ship goals off those Sotirio turnovers if he plays 90 min every week.

No idea where we will get a new left back between now and October which is a real worry.

no schnitzy roll :unknw:  but the chicken roll packed with lettuce and the rest for $8 was spot on!

     Who the hell is Yoshi?

and Lustica was very impressive, Dimas can see him having a more creative midfield role this season, replacing Andreu and Bruno replacing his role.

Wellington.......................... 2-0 and u farked it up :yahoo:

    But the rolls were cold.

Need to sort out those defensive blunders.

they beat anything I've had at a stadium tbh

Yeah we had some funny moments at the back, hopefully it was just pre season rust.

Scott was a boss on the field.. very impressive for such a young debutant.. big hopes, hopefully we can get the most out of him before he gets a lucrative deal overseas (early days I know). Stupid defensive errors compounded by the slippery conditions led to two goals that shouldn't have been, players spent more time on their arses than on their studs. We were in control, both Well goals were against the run of play. Few great saves by Redmayne, would have been nice to see Tyson on for a short stint though but that's what the trial games will be for. Lustica was impressive, hopefully he keeps it up. What a screamer from Nichols.. he was in position for a few others too but Sotirio and co didn't see the chances. What a free kick from Cole, and matching save from Moss. Looked like right in the top left corner from the active area.

Also LOL at the mosh pit chant to push the secco out of the RBB haha love it

Any word on pre season games?

Scott seems to always be in a position to score - still needs good service, but the positional awareness is something we have not had in abundance.
