  • Haliti Screamer Sinks Blacktown City in 2-0 Trial Victory

    mack

A Labinot Haliti brace has rocked Lily Homes Stadium giving the Wanderers a 2-0 victory in their toughest hit-out to date.

Ten minutes into the match Haliti took the ball on his left foot just outside the corner of the box. The resulting 20 yard shot slammed into the top corner to open the scoring for the Wanderers.

Controlling the possession and tempo for the rest of the half Wanderers were in control but stoic City defence kept them out when Mark Bridge shot high after a nice passing movement between himself and Trifiro.

The City defence weren't able to keep Haliti out, as he found his range from a Bridge pass and curled the ball for his second. The Wanderers took their 2 goal advantage into half-time.

The 3,472 strong crowd watched as Blacktown turned the game on a more even keel with several substitutions from both sides. Despite numerous attacks from both teams the score remained 2-0 until the full time whistle.

A solid match for the Wanderers as they continue their pre-season preparation. With less than 60 days to go until the A-League opener, manager Tony Popovic is sure to be impressed by the way the team has taken to his tactics. The team have yet to concede a goal, and are attacking and scoring quite freely.

The next match scheduled for the Western Sydney Wanderers is on the 22nd of August, in two weeks time against Sydney United. However it is possible the club will announce another pre-season friendly to take place next week.

Does anyone know what the story is with dino kresinger? Is he coming to wsw or not?

    Wasn't the ? Trifiro?

Yeah, in the 1st half anyway.

Interesting that Popa is playing Bridge on the left as a wide attacking midfielder.

I suppose he can always adjust where he plays him when the total squad is known.

Mooy and Haliti have been sharp since the 1st open training session and look set to have good seasons.

    Where's Beauchamp? Injured or something?

Nice to hear positive reactions to the RBB from the wider audience. Despite the fact a security guard having a word with Noise for swearing in the megaphone haha

I heard Mooy wasn't overtly amazing apart from a few nice touches and some other movements. Ill be interested to see how he performs against an A-league side

In the second half bridge switched to the right, almost as if Popa wanted to keep him close to keep talking to him.

Its interesting the way Popa is asking Haliti and Bridge to hold the ball up and cut in towards the box while the fullbacks overlap.

Combined with a strong target man to bring others into the play and a mobile CAM it makes for a great attacking system. Haliti and Bridge are suited to the role too, being strong, able to hold the ball up, yet mobile and pacey too.

Add Mooy in behind them all pulling the strings and it looks fairly tasty tbh

    Your information is wrong.

He lost the ball once (trying to hold it up with two on him), other than that his positional play was brilliant and he was the fulcrum for most things the side did, a class above.

I trust my source. A football coach for the past 16 years, he knows his **** (and isn't bias)

He says Mooy for all his decent touches look off the pace at times. I tend to trust his judgement, but would prefer to see him play in person.

Even so, was he a class above a rather poor outfit? Perspective changes alot of things

Or was he one of the better performing players in a squad with plenty of proven A-League talent? Perspective changes a lot of things.

    Hey, who was number 5?

He was very ordinary. He was only sligtly better than the left fullback in the first half. I cant believe how many times he lost possession with a poor pass or long ball.

Exactly. I rather be the judge myself, rather than rely on my friend. I'll try come out and see what the fuss is about next week if i can salvage some time.

No, there's just no friendly scheduled at the moment for next Wednesday. Our next friendly will be the Wednesday after against United.

Popa seems very happy with him judging by his reactions last night. But he's only been coaching for a few years :P

These days he coaches at Greenwich SC in one of their all ages teams from memory, i'd have to check. Coached in Leicester when he lived over there. (been in Aus 5 years)

The tall #9 was a south African trialiast, 21 years old. Looked very average.

    Matty, South American not African.

According to my source, he's only just gotten off the plane, so I'd be inclined to give him a few games / weeks to acclimatise.

He's a tall lad who may be handy in the air.

Also, I didn't mind that he was prepared to shield the ball and hold posession when he had his back to goal.

Ninety percent sure he was South African. Tall, pale guy up front, not the left back. Anyway, he was rubbish, didn't see him successfully hold it up once.

As far as I could tell line up looked like this....

Only one I'm unsure of is who played in behind the striker

    ..........................Covic..............................

    Elrich...Dappuzo...NTS...Uruguyan LB

    ..................Caira.......Mooy....................

    Haliti......................?....................Bridge

    ..........................Sth A #9........................

thats the sum of what we know banana, one page back

I'd suggest that the number 5 was Caira and massively out of his depth. He had a very ordinary game, turning blind a lot, attempting to pass through opposition players, etc.

I may have been Aaron's coach some time ago so without sounding too biased, you don't go on to play for Bolton (Reserves) and then St Mirren (Scotland) & of course Socceroos if you don't have the ability. I always knew that he would make it & yes ... you should see for yourself Norwester

I didn't see this much but i did see the pspartans one when Bridge moved to the left for the second half. Was much better there. Our style could potentially be a Bayern esque style with both wide men cutting in a lot on there preferred foot, and Mooy pulling the strings and a Target man in Dino perhaps. I think bridge will be more suited to the number 10 role or the wide left.

The Blacktown Demons actually played quite well in the first half. They certainly provided better competition than the last two outfits. I have no idea how they are going this year but they have a very good reputation locally. I think our squad of misfits are performing well and can only be gaining much needed experience together.

Considering the lack of information we all have at this stage I think it is a bit early to be making judgements. We should have a much better idea of player quality once we come up against Sydney United, but again even by that stage we probably won't have our squad locked down.

And as an example of people reading too much into things. Whether we are whipping boys this season or not I couldn't care less. But trying to make assertions like this so far out from the season, lol. Could I please borrow your crystal ball? I need to put some money on this years winner.

As posted by Aussierus on FFT:

Mooy was ok but held the ball for too long. Too slow for a-league. Will get hammered.

Basically a 2-0 scoreline against what was also the majority of the Blacktown City U/20's side means wanderers will be A-leagues new whipping boys this year. Blacktown had most of the posession throughout the game but didn't have the firepower upfront to capitalise on the possession. Wanderers really only had 2 shots for 2 quality goals.

Definately wouldn't pay to watch the wanderers in a-league this year. (Except to watch kwabena) the rest are very average players with little to no talent.

I'm going to pick a nit here, but someone who has 'very little' or 'no' talent cannot by definition be considered an 'average' player.

According to him, our shots to goals ratio was 100%, bloody generous lad.

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
    • More like Neverlosin' the way they're going.
    • If we give City 25% possession we'll get double figures against us.
