  • Hard Work To Win In Newcastle.

    mack

A first half goal for Jaushua Sotirio was the difference in Newcastle this afternoon, as the Wanderers survived a late fright from Newcastle's goalkeeper Mark Birighitti to keep a clean sheet and go level on points at the top of the A-League.

Western Sydney, who had sunk to fourth on the back of the prior results from this round, came out well on top against the lowly Jets, and after 15 minutes they made their dominance count on the scoreboard. A ball over the top found Mark Bridge, his cutback just missed the outstretched leg of Mitch Nichols, but ran past the penalty spot for left winger Sotirio, who had an open net and fired home. Romeo Castelen should have made it 2-0 in the 30th minute, as Dimas fed the ball through for Castelen, but he blasted his shot past the post.

The Wanderers continued to dominate in the second half, with only Mark Birighitti the Jets custodian keeping his side in the game, with Scott Neville & Andreu both forcing great saves out of the keeper. Mark Bridge should have ended the game as a contest after an hour when he was put through on goal, but delayed his shot too long, allowing the defence to tackle him, with insult added as the visiting Japanese referee deciding it was simulation and awarding the forward a yellow card.

Newcastle looked lively as the game drew to a close but had little clear cut chances. With the 3 minutes of injury time running out, Leonardo had a corner that attracted Birighitti up into the attack. The ball was delivered into the 6 yard box, Liam Reddy flapped, the ball flicked on to Birighitti, who hammered a first time volley towards goal. Unfortunately for the Jets the shot found the only Wanderers player even remotely close to the line, as Mark Bridge stuck out a boot to turn the shot away.

While it would have been an incredible equaliser, and a deserved point for Newcastle sticking to the fight as much as a potential punishment for the Wanderers profligacy in front of goal, it was not to be, with the full time whistle going straight after.

The outrageous statistic of Birighitti's shot on target being one more than Castlen, Baccus, Vidosic, Santalab & Nichols combined is a damming indication of the lack of accuracy and failure to take shots that present themselves, and with the Wanderers having the worst goal difference in the top 4, it does not bode well for a Premiership race that is so tight that only one game separates the Roar and Wanderers from Adelaide & Melbourne City.

With all the chances missed, we should be called the Squanderers.

Right, Squanderers was what I meant to say. God dammit :nono:

I got some 'likes' for my 'swanderers', though but I suspect they were pity 'likes'  lol

We knew what you meant mate. We are Wanderers fans, we're not silly.

I've let too many people recognise me, I'm losing my mystique.

I hate 5pm sunday kickoffs, the heat & direct sun destroys me.

I was totally gone by the 83rd minute. Myself and the friend I went with ended up watching the last few minutes from one of the high rows.

Yeah the heat was oppressive. The 5pm KOs at Newcastle and Gosford are killers in the heat of the summer. Kudos to the RBB for going at it all game in the sun. Had to laugh at the moment when the march had to change direction at the traffic lights with police in a panic !!
For me the 5pm kickoff is one the biggest issues in the A-League. It affects crowds, playing standard and atmosphere not to mention the danger of heatstroke which I have personally witnessed happen to 2 people who had to be treated.

If is played later on the Sunday then people will start moaning that it is too late as they have work the next day, or that they left little Johnny at home because it's a school night. We correctly blame them for a lot of things, but the FFA can't win on this one.

My clock has times other than 5, 7 and 9. Why don't they try 6pm for example? I don't know what it was like on the pitch but it was much cooler in the stands after half time. Imagine if the game kicked off then instead of 5pm. Or even a 5.30 kick off. I think they're just not trying hard enough.

What about that wheelchair guy in the march that didn't realise there was a curb on the road and had to backtrack 40-50 metres to use a ramp. What a douchebag!

100% Ed :good: I do know that the FFA are sticking to the 5, 7 & 9 slots so the people who don't really follow the aleague can turn on the television & know there is a game on, no matter what. It is the same argument why they won't break for international weekends because people might switch on the TV & might not realise it is an international break.

Yes I know the FFA can't win but WSW fans will travel but had they held it any later then we would have got even fewer turning up. In saying that, all WSW interstate NSW games should be held on Saturday's at 5-530 as we will always travel in big numbers. It is just what we do, in that way we can help out the local economy & get home at a decent hour.

I'm sure many of you returned 9:30 or later on Sunday. If you combine that with being out all day, being in that heat & the car ride up, it ends up being a pretty exhausting day.

Yeah, I agree. We can blame the FFA for many things, but predicting the Summer heatwave to continue into the middle of March, back when they drew up the schedule, is expecting too much of them.

I do expect them to remember not to schedule lots of away games for us in the middle of the Asian Champions Finals for next season, though. :)

Apart from Vidosic, none of our players know how to head the ball when attacking.

And even he misses from infront of goals.

Having had the chance to recover from the sun and watch the replay yesterday, there were many positives out of that game despite the spurned chances but Birra did extremely well in goal. We hassled brilliantly from the front and particularly pleasing were the performances of Neville and NTS who were much improved after a few weeks of questionable plays. Even Jamo had a better game than of late but not yet back to his early season form. Bridge gets a lot of stick but his off ball running and general intelligence is sorely missed when he is absent. Newcastle have had some good results recently but we made them look second rate for much of the game.

Just watched the replay. Simon Hill had a stat: we have conceded from 12 (twelve!) set pieces this season. That's one every two games. Outrageous scenes.

Incredible really. What a contrast to the ACL when the all corner kicks just bounced off our defence. What's the difference? Alberto instead of Hamill? No LaRocca?

Covic would have been a factor

Sometimes playing 4 centre backs in defence and having la rocca in the midfield (another centre back).

I think Asian teams generally are not as physically strong from corners. One area the Aussie teams often have the advantage.

Who else has noticed the lack of diagonal running in this team, especially on the counter and also in the final third on slow build up.  The players just seem to drift wide or run in straight lines.  You never see hard, fast diagonal runs across the defence, and never ever see two players make diagonal runs to switch, dragging defenders across each other and causing confusion.

What I don't understand about this is that these sort of runs are bread and butter even in juniors, so it feels like a deliberate decision NOT TO make these runs, rather than on oversight because I just feel any player who had even half decent coaching in juniors makes these runs on instinct.

And if that is the case, that they are being instructed not to make these kinds of runs, what would be the logic behind that?  I'm not saying there isn't a reason to stop your players from making diagonal runs across, behind or through the defenders, I'm just saying I can't think what the reason would be, and would be interested if anyone has any theories

    • That football genius gave Rudan a three year extension
    • From 1st half of the season the form has depended on Hendrix to marshall the midfield. When he had the injury back in Jan he was never the same to take us in the 2nd half. Brilliante doesn't suit the possession style, and Priestmann is close but can't ask him to lead the midfield. It was shades of Baccus and O'doherty midfield back in the day. Marcelo was our defence this season and teams just started to target whoever patnered him. Beadling is a back up defender not a starter. Bonetig has the same problems as Russel just doesn't read the game or a weird lapse of concentration. We never solved the front 3rd issues and we relied on Brook and Milanovic to take us this season. Pierias shouldn't be there. Impact sub at best but we have Younis and Sapsford that are better. Hell Blair showed more when he was on than Antonsson has.
    • Clearly the funniest outcome would be for us to win, City to draw, and us to finish ahead of them with equal points and a double digit goal difference deficit.
