  • Heartless Wanderers Out Of FFA Cup

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers failed yet again in the FFA Cup, losing with a disgraceful performance in a 4-1 scoreline against Melbourne City.

The opening goal came for the home side from an unusual, but spectacular source. Debutant central defender Michael Jakobsen made his way into the penalty area on a free kick. After some defensive chaos in the box the ball looped in the air and Jakobson scored with an outrageous overhead kick.

The Wanderers were completely outplayed in the first 20 minutes, Dimas Delgado could easily have cost his side a second. On the ball having dropped back into the central defensive line, he slipped and gave the ball away to Bruno Fornaroli, but the goal was called back for a fould on Dimas.

Jumpei Kusukami had the first real shot in anger for the visitors, after City failed to quickly mark up from a corner, he took a blistering shot from beyond the penalty area that Sorensen palmed away at the near post. The Wanderers should have been given a penalty when Scott Neville was barged over in the penalty box but the referee waved it away.

City took a two goal advantage on the half-hour, Nikolai Topor-Stanley couldn't keep the ball away from Luke Brattan, who quickly fired the ball into the box, that none of the defence could manage to stop. Tim Cahill sent a cut-back for a tap-in from a meter out that Fornaroli couldn't miss.

Topor-Stanley capped off the worst individual performance for the Wanderers in their short history by managing to get himself sent off before half-time after being destroyed for pace by Fornaroli, he shoved over the attacker, not making any attempt to play the ball at all, and was rightly sent off. Tim Cahill converted the penalty.

It was 4-0 after an hour. The Wanderers defence fell asleep, leaving players unmarked in the box, City whipped in a cross, Fornaroli managed to hit Redmayne with his header, only for it to bounce off the post to the feet of Fernando Brandan who slotted it into the open net.

Dimas & Shannon Cole combined to pull a goal back for a 4-1 scoreline. Cole put in a great cross to an unmarked Dimas at the back post, and the defensive midfielder made no mistake with the header. Thankfully the rest of the game passed without much incident.

The Wanderers were never in the game from the opening whistle and Topor-Stanley's decision to get himself sent off handed Melbourne City the game and must be punished by team management. Apart from Nichols & Bulut the rest of the side were either invisible or costing the side goals, and changes must be rung if the side is to have any hope of winning the first round Derby against Sydney FC.

    SING IT WITH ME, LADS!

Can we start with Redmayne and just replace him with a youth Keeper. They would do a better job. He is utter ****.

Also, can we not use Hamill ever again?

Southend United used to sing "Southend, Southend, we're **** but we are beating you" on the few occasions they took the lead. I always though that was quite funny.

I'm guessing that's he last we see of Hammil until an inury crisis.

Apart from Hammil and NTS being terrible, a worry is that Pinates hasn't convinced so far

Only saw snippets of the game... but I don't think we'll miss NTS come derby time. He's slow and gets himself into some poor positions. That said, we were lacklustre and made City look better than what they were.

We concede the softest ******* goals I've ever seen. So many defensive errors and clumsy back passes/turnovers which were hardly present in our first two seasons. So many howlers from NTS and Hamill over the past few seasons.

I know we shouldn't be panicking or anything, but I realised this isn't early pre season anymore and we have a huge game in two weeks against a team who are looking formidable in attack and disciplined in defense, yes ...I rate SFC defence as one of the best in the league and ours incredibly unpredictable and frail. You'd think popa would have it right by now being a top defender in his prime at Palace.

We gave city too much space and made the Cahill/Fornaralli partnership look world class.

NTS got himself into poor positions for the 3rd goal and I knew he was going to do something stupid and got himself sent off.

That 2nd goal, whats the deal with the players just standing there and letting Cahill pass the ball back to Fornaralli who was completely unmarked?

You can't blame Redmayne for the goals conceded, if his defenders were doing their jobs then he wouldnt have conceded that many goals.

Bulut and Nichols are the only ones who put effort in last night but with Nichols, he cant do everything on his own.

Redmayne shouldn't be in any of the conversations about how poorly we played

The back 4 were a mess... Dimas and pintares, wtf.

Excuse Dimas because we know what he can do, and is a one-off... Pintares a real worry

So when the first 6 in fronf of the keeper cant make 3 passes, turn over the ball cheaply, the keeper has little to do with the result.

What he had to do, he did well. He'll be the keeper for round 1... It's the others have their spots at risk

clisby will come in, he will be better than hammill at lb, Aspro will come in, he will be better than topor,

santa will be off the bench and hopefully

Martinez will be ready to play at least 60 mins

Bacchus over Pintares is the interesting one. Will happen at some stage this season, but maybe not for R1

He's still shaky with crosses and not commanding enough in the 6 yard box, that was shown last year

Have the club installed WSW Facebook as its head coach yet?  Or should we just fold now!

One poor result doesn't make a season chaps.

Yep.One game does not foretell an entire season. How many here are going to hand in their memberships, not go to the games,or support the club or team because they lost one game ? Not many I bet.! Certainly not me.Lol.

our back four do not have the passing skills to **** around with in our half. just ******* hoof it up the field.

Redmayne has to stop going for the short option - his passing on the ground is woeful, and while i'd say none of the goals were 100% his fault, his distributing decisions certainly put us under a hell of a lot of pressure.

And hammil at left back, FFS man - play Topor there, at least he has a left boot. Inverted wingers can work, but inverted fullbacks is. just. dumb.

Shannon Cole and Baccus were great.

We played against a good attacking team and we stunk....but we also played against one of the weakest defending teams and the only shot I remember in the first half was from Jumpei.

They came at us fast and challenged our passes - and we were too slow, both across the ground and in decision-making. There was nobody behind Butters making any move to space, so by the time a pass came towards them they were already marked, and the mistakes just compounded.

Plenty were worse than Redmayne, but seriously - the guy does NOT control his area at all. He always looks like he's in a panic, and his positioning is shyte.

Bullut header on target cleared by Malik (other than that I can't thing of one)

To add to the gloom. The marquee for the other lot looks decent, I was really hoping he'd be crap

    Fold the club

As someone stated above those slamming redmayne perhaps need to put on a pair of gloves and see how difficult your job becomes when the players i front of you are running around like it is there first ever football match, he isnt perfect and i would love to see tyson between the sticks (but that is only because it is tyson) in terms of ability redmayne is an excellent keeper, topor is the one that just had me face palming every 3 seconds the amount of mistakes he made was ridiculous.

he also did something a captain should never do and is probably half the reason our defence  turned to **** (he abused redmayne hamill etc when making mistakes...right after/before he ******* made one). i cant actually remember the last time someone in the back line mad a costly mistake and topor went over to give them a bit of a boost, he either abuses them or drops his head and walks away. great servant to the club and deserve's praise and a good sending off but he is seriously struggling at the moment, im hoping cornflakes strikes up an awesome partnership with him and we see him back to his best

    P.S MOTM...Santalab

how is it even we he isnt playing he is still best on park??

    Pretty much this.

NTS will always be a legend of this club, but hard to recover from a performance like last night, it was watch through open fingers stuff at times, it was almost kind to him and a relief when he got sent off as it stopped any further pain! I think the ref took pity on him!  Not saying he is totally done at the club, but **** me he is in one hell of a hole at the moment,

Technically we are still in pre-season, and players are still coming up to speed. The guys who are new to the league have just gotten a good old taste what HAL is about.

I'd rather us leak goals now than in the season opener. Defensive errors don't go down well with Popa. We dropped the ball big time against the Roar in Rd 1 last year, and things were patched up very quickly.

The NTS issue seems to be hanging over the club like a smelly old beer fart. Very very unfortunate, to say the least.

No point in musing over Castelen, Andreu, Alberto. They are gone.

The club made a call to spread the cap money over 25 players, and spent a moderate amount of money on a single player outside the cap. The Smurfs, not playing ACL, opted to spend their cap on 18 players, and another 2.something million on their two marquees. We'll know after the derby how these contrasting philosophies play out on the pitch.

Adelaide set a template in the GF for others to follow.. press the **** out of us. Defend high. Challenge us to play out.

100%, i was screaming at the tv to pump the long balls it was sooooo obvious and it frustrated me that popa did not relay that to the team straight away.

there was two occasions from memory were we pumped a long ball and bulut was on to them like a fly to honey (i think one he screwed up hsi touch and the other sorensen was psotioned well and came out of his box to clear it just before bulut got there.

i get that we want to play our own style and play out from the back but when it is so blantaly obvious that it isnt working and long balls behind teh defense is the answer, why is popa so hesitant to change the tactic?

Regardless of the result, I am just happy to have actual football issues to discuss again  :)

Spent too long reading about unlimited latest escapades... enough to drag anyone down...

Bring on the derby / season still I say  :good:

drag people down in the same way Topor dragged down Fornaroli in the penalty area last night? :(

    "season hasn't started yet"

    I don't agree with this.

This was the quarter final of a cup competition we should be aiming to win.

There is no excuse. Pre season goes for longer than the season proper, all teams should be ready to go.

I'd rather this happened IN the season so at least there are games to recover the points on. But its a KO comp and we were completely Knocked Out without even throwing a punch.

I've never turned off a WSW game early and have always suffered the entire match. I was close to not watching the 2nd half because there was no way we were coming back from that.
