  • Henrique Keeps Wanderers Anchored To Bottom

    mack

A dubious early penalty converted by Henrique on a stormy night in Parramatta kept the Wanderers winless and adrift in last place on the A-League ladder.

The gift penalty from Kris Griffiths-Jones was slotted down the middle by the diminutive forward, while the Wanderers were content to dink the ball around the edges of the penalty box in an apparent refusal to shoot at goal, a refusal which cost them a chance of getting even a point from the game.

Seyi Adeleke was adjudged to have brought down a Roar player in the box and Henrique made no mistake to open the scoring in the 4th minute. The Roar were the better in the first half but couldn't add to their lead.

The Wanderers took control of the match in the second stanza, but a seeming obsession with playing on the flanks instead of taking shooting opportunities began to frustrate the 10,000 strong crowd who braved the atrocious conditions.

Nikita Rukavytsya had the best and final chance for the home side, as he finally took advantage of some neat play to blast a shot that cannoned off the woodwork and went out for a goal kick.

The Wanderers next match is against Adelaide United in Adelaide on Saturday the 6th of December.

We used tod do 3 calls per each stand then a united one x 3 im pretty sure. Now we are at one call per side and one collective one.

It was overkill (IMO, and obviously in other's as well). Being in the rbb, by the 5th time saying "WDWSF", you almost.... just want the chant to end. This was it's quick, still gets the stands involved, and it doesn't.... I don't know, drag on.. I guess.

Maybe one in each half would be a good compromise... Dunno

I hear ya mate and I can understand the monotony of a call. I would also say that most chants we do go for quite some time and the WDWSF call is one of the fastest when compared and as an away rbber I appreciate the rest time lol.

Pretty sure the stands feel a bit like the rbb are going through the motions and doing it for doing its sake. Dunno for sure mate but I think the stands as a collective would appreciate the old interaction as compared to the new one. And as I said im positive Paranoia can work as a call response as well.

Apparently by the last WDYSF the RBB felt that the side stands weren't getting into it and that it was just happening for the sake of it. Obviously those in the RBB know what it sounds like from both stands but I know that the upper East stand would always get involved for each one and not die off towards the end. The core's call but would be nice if we maximised the amount of time that the stands were active. I'm not sure if it is better creating a new call/response with the 1x WDYSF & West converting the paranoia chants to the stands but maybe try it at an away game first? Or would it be better if we went back to just the 3 x WDYSF & West. I just hope that we are always changing, always doing our best to out do ourselves week in week out. I think we need to start by getting those new chants learnt in the active area before we even think about doing anything else!

For my 10 cents I loved the old WDYSF, but understand the nature of the change. It was a bit naff not having one in the first half of the game against the Meow but as far as I'm concerned with all that rain any upward salute of the hand might've been misconstrued as a signal for help from drowning fans. The RBB set the agenda vis-a-vis chants and songs and those of us in the Eastern, Southern or Western stands can either live with it or go silent like the Cove.

That bold sentence is the key...

It's not just winning that measures our success as a club - it's also how we deal with losing. With every game our supporters continue to reaffirm that we are the most passionate and supportive in the A League and every time our players dust themselves off after a loss or draw and put in a wholehearted performance like they did last night they reaffirm their self belief, inner strength and unwillingness to surrender. We are successful regardless of our position on the ladder and unless Parramatta Stadium is silenced or our players stop trying we will continue to be a success.

I like the positive attitude, but statements like this, especially when we lack even the shallow history of other A-League clubs, are just empty, self indulgent wanks better left for the pulpit out at Hillsong.

Right now we aren't succeeding, and until we make it through a horrible season with most of our support intact I wouldn't even dare to try and take the mantle of "club with the most passionate supporter base" from a club like the Victory.

Hell, I would argue that Perth are above us in terms of loyalty from their fans - their crowds may not be quite as large, but that club has survived with a reasonably sized core base for far longer than the A-League has existed.

Our club is young, and we have very passionate supporters, but please, let's not overdo it.

This is just the attitude taken by so many other supporters of other teams wanting to see WSW fall off its mantle. It's disappointing, why can't we just unite and believe the best in our supporter base. Sure we have a few bandwagoners who will fall off sooner or later if the results don't improve but do you think that is all of our 19,000 members? Don't think so! Comparing us to Perth Glory :nono: don't even go there :smurfpoint:

W2154, I don't mind the constructive stuff but it's just constant negativity that is just frustrating. Let's change the whole team, change the formation, players aren't good enough, Popa isn't good enough, we aren't succedding this season (hello, just won the ACL) etc etc I just think this does nothing for the team or club. Let's be be constructive and break things down on where things are going wrong and look for things to improve the team.

To the Saba expectations comparing him to Ono. Look it's really hard not to do this but the problem is that Ono played in a certain way for us in our first two seasons that made us so dangerous in the final third. Even though Saba isn't Ono, we bought this player to replace him but he doesn't play in the same way as Ono which is why things aren't clicking right now. Either Saba has to adjust or the team have to adjust to him. I feel that Saba has to adjust and grow into his role changing his game to get the best out of the team and himself. Unfortunately this isn't going to be a couple game process, but I just hope that when he does start firing for us that he sticks around to replay that loyalty shown in him by the fans, Popa and the club.

agree with what you have said.

    Pretty much this.

We had something that worked not just in the stands but also as a fan base we maximised something and made it a unique WSW thing. The opposition teams and fans know we are united and push all together.

Having WDYSF(old style) followed by paranoia ( all together with RBB split controlling each stand as in the united WDYSF would go off finshing with WEST. **** YEAH!!!

The crowd mood where I was (Bay 22 / Upper north east) was very frustrated to the point of bordering on hostile at the end of the game.... there was even a small scuffle at the full time whistle between fans. I've never seen that before

In previous seasons we won a lot of tight games.... this year we're losing them. Its a cruel and frustrating game (just ask each of the superior teams we beat in the ACL) but our quality will start winning out given enough chances, we won't stay unlucky forever.

I think you will have to give a bit of leniency for now. Stormy Wednesday night, and people really made an effort to get to the game. The ball just won't roll in for us, and the frustration is there because people are willing the team on and it is still not enough. I just think maybe all the luck we have had in the past two season is now reversing itself. Maybe we need to think in terms of, eventually this bad luck will go the other way again. Just wait for our time.

I also think it is the conditions the game was played in, and the small crowd that was there. The doom and gloom of the setting in which that game was played in pretty much sums up our season so far. Fans left the stadium unhappy and dejected. That's normal.

We aren't nearly as good as people think we are - I said the same last year when we were winning(luckily). We are much better as underdogs . Suddenly everyone expects an easy win against Newcastle/Roar at home - not going to happen. We have 3 or 4 players that wouldn't make any other teams starting 11. Popa has been a magician taking mediocre players and turning them into a winning team - at some point we need to add some quality. Having said that - I will still enjoy coming to all the games I can - even if solo and in a thunderstorm. 10000 plus turned up - the rbb were amazing - keep the faith ladies and gents and just enjoy the ride. This is the year we show the doubters that Sydney is red and black regardless of where we are in the league...

We lack a second quality striker... if we had someone who has a knack for pinching a goal like archie thompson or that taggart kid we would of burried alot of those chances. There are chances but we have not put them away clinically.

Someone said it before and it's a very unpopular opinion but we could have done a lot worse than landing Berisha.  Imagine Juric and Berisha with Ruka charging in, keepers would be having nightmares all week leading up to playing us.

There are plenty of people, and a heck of alot of kids sing along with the RBB down our end, and WDYSF & West always brings out the whole stand.

Wednesday night the RBB carried the fans long especially in the last 10 minutes, I thought they lifted and the stands responded trying to push the boys along - it may not have sounded like it to the RBB, but it did down the other end

Paranoia is an outstanding chant, I for one would love to see it stadium wide.

I would love to see stadium wide paranoia too, but it would have to slow down alot. And probably get the roving capos- one at east and one at west- to get the stands into it.

Depressing that we have to wait til January for another home game

I know what you're saying dmixtaa and I realise members in the stands have a right to be as active as they want to be but when we really need the boys to lift, I think it's the exception to the rule. I'm not saying sing for 90 minutes but I'm saying for the big moments, let's get them over the line!

Hey Prydz... I'm sure this is the case in most bays and from where I'm sitting, it does happen. Maybe not so noticeable on Wednesday night with smaller than usual crowd with Noahs Ark conditions.

    No way Paranoja would work.

I don't think it would either. The easy bit (and it works better if the stands do the easy bit) is the opening of the chant, and you will it almost impossible to get a stand to start a chant without a lot of assistance. Where I am in the western stand, people love to participate but resent anyone who tries to force them to participate. Every couple of months an aspiring capo has seats in the bay, tries to force increased participation and is pointedly ignored until he sits down and watches the game. There are no plastics, but I think people feel very strongly that they will support the team their way, and don't like to be told they need to do it differently.

I also find Paranoia a bit weird as a home chant. "The Wanderers are in the city"? Well, yes, I'd expect that to be the case for a home game.

Irrespective of the negativity and doom and gloom of some I am convinced that we have already had so much success that it will never be undone. I'm certainly never going to stop supporting the Wanderers (unless of course we go the way of Gold Coast United) and I seriously doubt the vast majority of our fans will either.

We have gone from not even existing to making two grand finals in succession, being the first Australian club to ever win the ACL and still continuing to create a game day atmosphere that remains unrivaled by any other supporter fanbase in ANY sport in the country. None of that will ever be taken from us even if we were to never win another game all season!
