  • Henrique Keeps Wanderers Anchored To Bottom

    mack

A dubious early penalty converted by Henrique on a stormy night in Parramatta kept the Wanderers winless and adrift in last place on the A-League ladder.

The gift penalty from Kris Griffiths-Jones was slotted down the middle by the diminutive forward, while the Wanderers were content to dink the ball around the edges of the penalty box in an apparent refusal to shoot at goal, a refusal which cost them a chance of getting even a point from the game.

Seyi Adeleke was adjudged to have brought down a Roar player in the box and Henrique made no mistake to open the scoring in the 4th minute. The Roar were the better in the first half but couldn't add to their lead.

The Wanderers took control of the match in the second stanza, but a seeming obsession with playing on the flanks instead of taking shooting opportunities began to frustrate the 10,000 strong crowd who braved the atrocious conditions.

Nikita Rukavytsya had the best and final chance for the home side, as he finally took advantage of some neat play to blast a shot that cannoned off the woodwork and went out for a goal kick.

The Wanderers next match is against Adelaide United in Adelaide on Saturday the 6th of December.

Poljak was awesome as always, even tho we should be using attacking midfielders rather than defenders. Baccus... I don't get it.

Hmm, I think the rest of your post is spot on, but gotta disagree with this. I thought Baccus was really good, had composure on the ball, seems to create space for himself, mostly picked out a good pass...whereas Poljak I think had one of his worst ever games...constantly giving the ball away. He's just not a very creative player.

I think you're being kind to Cole too...he was ******* horrendous. STOP RUSHING IN TO TACKLES!

    Link to comment

it looked like a penalty to me. i'm blaming cole for the goal, he had a chance to clear the ball or just put it over the sideline for a throw but tried to be too clever and it rebounded off the brisbane player and they got the penalty from the play. against newcastle he also did that poor attempt at controlling the ball where they nearly scored, it's these type of mistakes that we just didn't do in the ACL but we continue to do them in the a-league (eg mullen's brain fade for the goal against wellington, and flores would never have been left on his own for the goal v newcastle if it were ACL), which shows to me the intensity from the ACL is not there for whatever reason.

brisbane are still a good side, there is no doubt in my mind. i know they have struggled this year but we didn't lose to a bad side today, they are good. and when they get theo back in goals they will get even better. brisbane still being good is a huge problem for us because i think we will be fighting wellington and brisbane for 5th/6th/7th spot...

i thought when brisbane scored that we wouldn't win the game because we don't really look like scoring to be honest, but i was hoping for at least a draw. we're lacking that cutting edge in the final third, we're continually stuffing around with it around the box instead of crossing it into the box(i'm not talking about shooting, i think we shoot enough tbh), and EVERY team that plays us shows an elevated desperation in defence because they are playing the asian champions. it's sorta like what we did to teams in the ACL. we've gone from the hunter to the hunted and it's difficult. the hardest thing is not making it to the top but staying there.

cole is not a fullback. he's a stopgap measure there, he does a good job coming on as a sub for the last 30 minutes as a fullback but he's not a permanent a-league level fullback. for one he's too slow for a fullback, i mean he can run all day and he's probably one of the fittest players at the club but he's not fast enough to cover speedy wingers. and he's not a natural defender.

adeleke is going ok so far for me. he's only just turned 23 so we need to accept he's going to make mistakes at the moment playing in the most troublesome position on the field. also it was wet tonight which he wouldn't be as used to so in general play he didn't seem as effective tonight. d'apuzzo retiring has caused popa a huge headache, he had to replace d'apuzzo with a visa player for left back meaning, the way i read it, that we sacrificed polenz (who wasn't perfect as a defender anyway) and now we only have hamill (who i think is a star and will play for australia one day) as a current a-league level RB, but hamill can't play RB every game so we are struggling when he doesn't play. mullen's not an a-league level right back but to be fair to him he's a CB anyway, alessi isn't ready to play a full season of a-league and he's not the messiah at RB and if we get 10 games out of him this season it will be a bonus.

bridge's first touch is poor and always will be.

tonight ruka when he came on was lighting fast, skilful, showed plenty of promise, but didn't deliver. like the other games and his career so far. when we signed him some people were fawning over him and i asked the question why is he such a good signing. no-one answered. he hasn't done anything yet, people are still fawning over him, but we'll judge at the end of the season. :woah:

castelen, despite taurus promising to buy us all beers* if he wasn't an upgrade on hersi, seems the same as hersi going forward - causes the defence lots of issues but can't punish teams often enough with the final pass/cross/finish. but he doesn't yet defend running back like hersi did (i really think people underestimate how much running back hersi did to defend, he was a machine running back - bridge, haliti, cole are machine's running back too from forward positions and i love them for it. so does popa.). his fitness and touch will improve so again we'll judge him at the end of the season.

also we are really missing santalab more than anyone (except popa) realises. not sure if some people realise that santalab is popa's number 1 preferred striker in the big games.

it seems like we may continue to struggle physically and mentally until the asian cup break, it can't come soon enough tbh, so the players can refresh and get in a mini a-league pre-season that they missed out on due to ACL, and get back into the rhythm of playing week in week out in the a-league instead of peaking 6 times for ACL knockout games.

we really haven't had any luck in the a-league, all the players are doing their best and there's still a long, long way to go this season.

sorry for the way too long post, been wanting to get it out for a couple of weeks but hoping the wins would come!

*may or may not be true

We deserved better than that tonight from the team ,considering 10,000 of us made it there in terrible conditions . Call me negative ban me don't care but 4 home games 3 draws and 1 loss . Can't keep using the ACL , travel/ game schedules, tiredness, poor refereeing . Team still need time to gel etc etc as excuses all season . That was a terrible performance tonite no excuses

Have to agree - forget luck, referees etc............the excuses have to end. The season will be over by Christmas at this rate - 4 games at home and 3 points.........not good enough.

    couple of thoughts......

    - the adeleke pen sums up what he has been so far - makes a great play by running out to block the initial shot then makes a poor decision committing to the next tackle like that in the area when a bloke is clearly looking for contact. he is young and learning - he will get better

    - that was the most disorganised I have seen our press. we looked like granada trying to get the ball off barca at times. we had two going for one ball and leaving an easy pass etc- saba hasn't figured out the defensive side of what popa wants at all yet and as much as bridge is not a proper 10 he is MUCH better at this at the moment and needs to start there for the foreseeable future. we are missing shinji here too - he understood the game and directed our press - made sure the right man went to the ball and the easy options were covered.

    - RBB were outstanding and 10K on monsoon mkII on a wednesday is not a bad effort

    - i would be happy to drop to a 12K membership if it meant the jetlee's, WSW2167's etc went elsewhere. i cannot tolerate bandwaggoning, negative, turn on the team & players modern football muppets - go and find scouseroar and hang in newtown sipping some craft beer and talk about how wsw have ruined the a-league - you will probably be happier.

    - still think we are having a good season compared to what I am used to - our owner seems to obey the law, no threat of administration and we haven't even sold our best player yet  :unknw:

I wouldn't blame people for booing tonight!!! What are we that one eyed that we can't give it to the players and the coach ???I left at 81 minutes disgusted in the fact that we conceeded in the 4th minute and never really deserved to equalise!!! And mind you brisbane are shite also and that's how bad we were tonight we couldn't finish off a shite team missing their best player and a caretaker coach!!! Absolutely disgusting !!!!

    I can't tell if you're a troll or just a bandwagon fan.

For the record, East Sydney play tomorrow. They are doing better than us so maybe go support them.

Dale Penarol que no ni no !!!!!

Como Se dice bandwagon ??? Carrito de Banda !!

go and rip the team on sst , that way no one has to listen to it here or at all.

Really I am gutted after every loss. But I get up the next day loving this team even more and waiting till the next game.

The problems we need to overcome:

    * we need to rest players but I think Popa is tinkering with the line up too much. What did we have, 5 changes to the line up that had Sydney on the ropes?

    * Saba -technically great but overall effective play has been found wanting. Needs to step up.

    * Castelen needs to stay on the wing to give us width.

    * Ruka - the greastest issue with Ruka is he is an inconsistent player. Flashes of brilliance but often no goals to show for it. He needs to become more consistent under Popa

    * Our mids. We tend to be playing a more attacking system - Ruka, Juric, Castelen up front amd Saba further up the pitch and Spira deeper then when we had Mooy amd Ono. In short our mids get caught out and overwhelmed.

Well done to all yhe fans who turned out last night!

Youre obviously upset but how would it look if we all left after 81 minutes? Everyone, gone. Stadium empty! Over ten mins to go and we've all scarpered. Thst would really inspire the players to push on wouldn't it? Sometimes folk need to leave early but just walking out! There's been many a comeback in the last ten mins in this game.

I don't get how people can say that it wasn't a penalty.

The brisbane player got to the ball first, then Adeleke made the challange, missed the ball and tripped the attacker

    :unknw:

Don't know how anyone can make a call when the camera angle is at 45 degree to the tackle, you can see Seyi get the player but what if a different angle (which they don't have) shows he got the ball?

No matter how bad we play I will NEVER leave before the final whistle. Seen it far too many times from the smurfs over the last couple of seasons and we should always hold ourselves up to a higher standard than those mooks. Be pissed off after a bad result, have a gripe about players post match, but stay so at least you have the satisfaction of knowing you saw everything to formulate your opinion on.

PS, if Ruka's shot had gone in at the death those who left early might have a different opinion to some degree

    So many IFs

I'll give you one. If Gold Coast didn't have their A - League license taken away we wouldn't have a club!!

Why can't we get you the team and show our frustrations ??? Do you think the smurfs are the only team in the world to do this ???

We have really got to remove this from our fanbase, there is no excuses for walking out early or waiting for the players to walk by so you can clap them off the field, many of those players put in 100% and there wasn't much difference between a 1-1or 2-1 result for us. Okay you don't think the players deserve a round of applause but walking out on your team, leaving the stadium while your boys are still playing is showing a complete lack of disrespect towards the players, coach and club. There is no excuse for this, it only demonstrates how plastic some fans or members are when the results aren't going your way, that is what is supporting a club is about supporting through the highs and lows. I just hope that those that did do this, will acknowledge for next time there is no excuse for doing this in the future.

I would be tearing Baccus apart if I was Popa, in the first half when he beat a couple of defenders in the penalty area and then he just dived trying to win the penalty.

All he had to do was take another touch and then he had a good chance to shoot.

I sat in the western stand tonight, because my mum didnt go so i took her seat to stay dry (my major mistake tonight)

Never again, all the fans there do is yell out crap to the ref when he makes a right call, criticize the players they pass the ball backwards and quite a few people left at the 88 minute mark.

I'm sure that there are lot of people in the western stand that know their football, and it was probably just a few idiots sitting near me,

But it made the game not enjoyable to watch.

Pretty sure that was Saba. I absolutely blew up when that happened, he was clear on goal.

And I sit in the western stand and I wouldn't associate with your comments, there are undoubtedly people like that - just like there would be in the eastern, and southern and yes, northern stands. But not all of us are.

Horrible game, i'd almost say the worst I've seen at parra. Absolutely toothless performance. Thought Bridge wasn't too bad, Ruka and Hamill were good off the bench, but that's it. Need a solid win against Adelaide to kickstart this campaign once for all, because last night was appalling. Win or lose. We'll be back.

That was the worst we have played in a long while. Starting to run out of patience with our new signings. I understand we've had plenty of disruptions and some of them didn't have a pre-season but you expect to see some sort of improvements over the past few weeks, most of them are getting worse - particularly Saba and Adeleke. Neither of them look like they are good enough.

I was very positive after watching the first half in the derby, but last night we created nothing meaningful and that's a concern. The minimal chances we had were a result of bad defending, not any good team play or combinations.

We lack a creative, deep lying midfielder, we don't have any good fullbacks, Juric seems to be the only player who can score goals and we don't have anyone who seems capable of linking our midfield and attack.

And for all the hype around Rukavtysya, he doesn't seem to have anything more to his game than pace.

As for walking out on the team, completely agree with all of those who have criticised those who do. It's a faithless act that shows disrespect for the team. When Ruka hit the crossbar, one of my first thoughts was "imagine how all those who just left, and heard the crowd's reaction, would feel wondering what happened" closely followed by "I wish we scored, not just for the point but so that those 'fans' missed out on seeing the goal and learnt a lesson". Never leave a game early, it's not over until the fat lady sings - particularly when there's only a goal in it.

...and Juric did have a tight hammy and didn't train. He is unfortunately fragile and with Santa injured we don't have a real forward. Haliti is a decent worker but he's not a player who can lead the line. I'd rather Tomi plays against Adelaide than save him for Cruz Azul. The HAL is more important now, we need points, and let's face it even if we play Real Madrid we won't be doing much attacking!!! ;)

Seriously, the team needs an overhaul starting from cole, bridge and poljak etc....the only players that give 100% is toppa, castelen and especially Juric. No matter how bad the team performs i will always support them but i blame no body but the new owners, they did nothing to improve or make the team more stronger. NO marquee and additional striker who can put the balls away besides Juric.

Seeing last nights game I have to admit even some of the local district games are more entertaining. BUt one thing I wouldn't do is walk out until final whistle.

Yes it was, Mack go and get to specsavers tomorrow lol
To tell you the truth, I don't know how we can make that call when there were bodies in front of KGJ when he made the decisions, the camera angle doesn't really confirm anything because it's from the wrong angle and the only one who could make that decision was the linesman. From upper east I thought he got some of the ball but replay at home doesn't tell me anything

Bro were talking about a-league refs the worst i've seen in all competitions around the world.

It is disappointing to not win at home again & I can appreciate the questions based on individual performances. However questioning the commitment, effort & desire of the players is unacceptable as far as I am concerned. This club has built itself to be the powerhouse that it is today on these core principles. To question these principles now, in a time of struggle, is to spit in the face of what we have achieved so far, in such a short time.

I will never accept that a player is not putting in, is not doing his best to achieve a result & is not respecting the fans who show up. We can question the quality that is produced on game day & it is right that last night was not up to our usual standards. We are in a time of struggle. Solidarity is the key to get out of it.

Our role as the supporter is to support the team for the full 90. I will never view us as consumers enjoying a product. We are privileged to have a team that represents us. We are not owed anything.

There is a creeping sentiment among some fans that is beginning to disgust me. It is found here reading some absolute dribble & heard on the terrace by some who feel they are whinge about every play in the game. Your role on the terrace is to put your hands up & sing.

So many out there desperate to blame someone... might be an idea to look at yourself.

Regarding the boo's, was directed at the referees while they were walking off and once they were off the field they stopped

I agree Prydz about the boos directed at the ref although, I also believe some of them were for the team's pathetic performance. I have no problem with this. Sometimes the fans do have a right as a paying customer to let the team know of their lack of hunger and very ordinary performance. No one can deny we were well below par and since probably even before ACL final we have been on a sliding decline. The players are tired, we are being punished for our success but that's football. Officialdom wasn't all that kind to us last night but we should be used to this week in, week out. Until FFA are serious and start to bring in new blood from the Junior ranks or overseas then this will be the norm.

I have seen many teams bounce back after a razzing from their own fans. I don't believe any player, manager or team staff would have thought that a razzing from their own fans who trekked out midweek on a monsoonal night would have been out of order, for their obvious lack of effort.

Last night there was no width in attack until the 60th minute mark, by then it was too late and Shannon Cole who started to open up the flanks, was subbed. In the first 60 minutes you could throw a hankerchief over the front line, it's no wonder they couldn't/wouldn't shoot *****, they were constantlly in each others way, falling over each other, with no time overthe ball to shoot *****.

    • We can argue about the penalty, but we can't argue that it all started with a defensive error by Cole. We continue to be opened up via the wings.
    • Once the Roar had the lead all they needed to do was to defended it, and they did it well. MacKay and Brattan ruled in midfield, and we were not able to apply sufficient pressure over 90 minutes.
    • I don't know what Saba is meant to be doing for us, but I don't believe he is a play maker. He certainly is no Ono.
    • Ruka, Castelen, Saba - they need a goal.
    • What is missing is a can opener to deal with parked buses. We need someone who can bang in the goals that we are unable to score. Right now I don't care if he is called Henry, Cahill, or else, but with Santa out and Haliti making the decisions he makes there is currently no valid alternative to Juric.
    • We move on. Adelaide is waiting.

It is an honour for the club to represent Asia in the World Club Cup but realistically what are our expectations? We seem to be sacrificing so many games for some other competition. Every time I see a second string starting lineup, I think that this season does not seem to count. How many losses or lost points does it take? We will struggle to get in the top six. Really need to step up next week or Adelaide are going to tear us up.

My expectations are to beat Auckland City in the final  :ninja:

Disappointing result. I'm no great football tactitian but there seems to be a slight lack of quality in our buildup in comparison to the last two seasons and our options in front of goal are pretty awful. Sure we were missing Juric and Santalab but if Juric leaves in January we will be even more impotent.

I thought Cole and Saba were disappointing, I didn't see too much in Baccus' play to fill me with hope at having unearthered a potential weapon and I thought Adeleke was far from our worst, seems better going forward than trying to defend his left side though.

The RBB should take a bow. They were absolutely magnificent, KGJ was his usual knob self and well done to everyone that turned up on that miserable night. My BIGGEST disappointment is not being able to watch the team live now until next year. It feels like an off season now.
