A series of defensive lapses combined with awful finishing to see the Western Sydney Wanderers lose 3-1 to Brisbane Roar.

The opening match of the season ended with the away side stealing the 3 points. Jamie McClaren, the new Brisbane #9, scored in the 9th minute, pouncing on a dreadful backpass from Hamill before chipping Andrew Redmayne to open the scoring.

Mitch Nichols gave the 14,000 strong crowd something to cheer just minutes later, as he was played through on goal by Scott Jamieson, before closing in and finishing smartly from an acute angle to level the match at 1-1.

Brisbane were back in front after 22 minutes, new signing Corona whipping a corner to the near post where it was met by Daniel Bowles with a powerful header that the Wanderers defender on the back post couldn't stop going over the line.

Another failure of set piece defence had the Roar take a 3-1 lead into the break, another Corona corner whipped into the near post, the ball bounced against a pair of Roar players before falling neatly into the path of McClaren who had his double by firing home from point blank range. Despite huffing and puffing, Western Sydney weren't able to pull a goal back in the second half and continued their run of 4 opening round matches without a win.

It could be said that the Wanderers had the better control of open play, but football isn't just about open play, two atrocious attempts at set piece defending and the Hamill backpass left the Wanderers with a mountain to climb and it was never going to be easy to get back to level pegging, and it proved such.

The Wanderers need to get their full first team outfit on the park week after week or they will continue to struggle. The ongoing problems in both defensive and offensive set pieces still exist despite another pre-season to work on them, and once again a lack of accurate finishing cost the club any hope of taking points from this match. The one positive of the Thursday kick-off is that there is as much time as possible until the next match.

Tavares was watching the game from the west stand in second half.

Anyone else also thinking the last time we played well consistently was when ante was around ?

Brisbane weren't at full strength either...

Soft goals, indecision in front of goal.

We lack leadership on the pitch.

NtS has trouble playing out from the back. Redmayne big question mark. Hamill was poor. Aspro is young but perhaps better instinctively, and a better option imo.

Nichols direct, Jamieson positive, Castelen tried to do it himself too many times but can't be faulted for effort. Spaniards an upgrade over last season.

There were some serious problems on display tonight.

    Redmayne

    - afraid of the ball

    - poor command of his area

    Hamill

    - awful game all around

    NTS

    - stop trying to dribble the ball and stop playing diagonal balls upfield. Neither are effective.

    Jamieson

    - showed glimpses of quality

    - crosses the ball well and can use both feet

    - poor concentration and decisions at times

    Pepper, Dimas, Andreu

    - lacking influence

    - complete lack of forward moving passes that split defensive lines.

    Nicholls

    - despite getting himself in good positions and fashioning chances, did not offer much playmaking

    Sotirio

    - WSW will be the peak of his career

    - delivered a good cross on one occasion (possibly by accident)

    - took down a ball beautifully on his chest, only to waste the opportunity

    Castelen

    - could take less touches (if only the attacking options weren't completely static 90% of the time)

    - looks less effective after the 70th minute mark

    Piovaccari

    - needs to stop fouling

    - needs a good kick up the backside. He is playing for a Gold Logie and should quit showboating.

    - not worth his salary when I see a vast number of players abroad playing for less than €50k a year that could score 7-10 goals a season here.

    Defence

    - no leadership shown today

    - no marking on set plays

    - 1-man pressing was completely pointless

    - chasing the game and several players let their heads drop

    Attack

    - transitions way to slow

    - little to no movement...just look at Maclaren as opposed to Piovaccari

    - holding midfielders offering nothing going forward today

    - chasing the game and the defensive 6 try to keep possession, the attacking 4 too lethargic or unbothered to find space

    ----

I'm very disappointed with this performance. I'm sure some of you will be quick to mention that we created a lot of attacks.... Sure... When Brisbane capitalised on defensive errors and were happy to sit back. Even in the second half with the increased possession, Brisbane looked dangerous every time they went forward. We created very little.

Redmayne v Perth had my vote of confidence. Redmayne today was a shambles. He leans back and pushes his arms out when challenging for an aerial ball. That is a recipe for a spill. Every other team in this competition will continue to exploit us aerially.

This new Spanish assistant... How well can he communicate? We aren't holding the ball. We don't even have terriers in midfield anymore. Poljak + La Rocca were offering the same sideways passing contribution as the current pack though are better ball winners.

We might well have to wait until round 4 for our first point/s. Adelaide will be tough to beat at home and Sydney will punish us if we commit the same schoolboy errors. Don't think for a minute that Ninkovic and Dimitrijevic won't collect loose passes and feed through Smeltz, Holosko or Naumoff. Shame awaits if this team can't bounce back psychologically.

Loved Jamo...I think Andreu could be a massive asset...I don't think the few passages of class are enough to compensate for the constant extra touch too many of Castelan...I'm happy to wait for Fred for a game or two - but if we had the options I would've subbed him early 2nd half for a fit Santa, Gol Gol or Fathead...to got look at the slightly bemused Les Murray sitting in the box behind us during the poznan

As for the rest...we've never won the first game of the season so I'm not panicking

...got to bring the young bloke out tonight (his mum is not too happy he got back so late) and he asked why people were leaving at the end...I said some people like to leave early, and I asked did he want to leave as well? He just said even though he was pretty tired we cant leave before its over....great kid my son

A lot of newbies in the RBB tonight would explain why it felt flat..

and the March, I was shagged by the time we crossed the bridge and got to the church on the corner.

I think I left the best part of my voice where the March started too.

The burger was quite tasty, the chips weren't as good as last year. Still takes too long to get a ******* beer.

March was okay. Got out of the pub late, so had some catching up to do. Our friends in Hatamoto still have no ******* clue how to blend in, saw a couple on the march.

Minimal cops. Didn't see any hassles.

Fun being back in 55. Nowhere else I'd rather be.

The game was what it was. Lots of improvement needed.... or else it will be another long, long season.

give hamill a break he has potential he aint that bad. btw fatty and taveres sat next to me wtf!!!!

The problem is the times that he falls into a funk, he seems to stay there for the full game. He lacks the ability to bounce back. I've seen plenty of things I like in Hamill's game but he needs to seriously improve his mental game and consistency if he wants to reach the next level.

nIcholls finish for the goal, just picked his spot and placed it cool as

    nIcholls being in everything

    Castelan first half

our creating lots of chances on first half

    Five bad things

Hammils mistake for the goal, I don't want to be one of those negative I told yer so nobs, but he scares me he's error prone and his distribution is dreadful

Our defending from corners, was a shambles

Our habit of taking quick free kicks then turning the ball over

Redmayne looking shakier as the game went on

    Getting beat

The guys dont know how to support one another when going backwards. The defensive line positioning was reasonably ****, allowing roar attackers to close us down easily.

Our right side was weak as piss and broich exploiiited it

Nfi wtf is with West sydney terrace. Im aggravated after my comment on their fb page was deleted and im banned from commenting or even liking any of their ****. They did sweet **** all for all but 3 minutes, then made some good noise and went quiet again. They are acting as if they're in high school, being coy about what they are doing and why.

If those guys want to stand there with middle fingers up at the RBB, and not do the Poznan, then FINE, but they wont get any respect or understanding when their statement is about "Our vision will be to always prioritise the team and all supporters of WSW and most importantly we just want to go back to basics; supporting the team we love, and to enjoy the match day experience together."

If you do nothing for for all but 3 minutes and dont have any statements to explain then goodluck, but im right off side. Im not a kid so if a group is unwilling to communicate then sod them, let them sulk

got banned from the fb page too for calling them the cool kids club lol

Even though it was an awful result I am still encouraged by the majority of our play. I mean we did dominate possession for long periods of the game, but no use having possession if your not going to use it effectively.

To be fair to Piovacarri he had two good chances, one was the fancy scissor kick that he should have buried and the other one in the first half on the right that he belted into the side netting. He didn't get all that much service otherwise. Every striker will miss their fair share of goals, first game, nothing to be too worried about so far.  Also Hamils mistake resulting in a goal was not a great start. Every defender makes them, lets hope he doesnt make too many more, because he is a super player.

The weakness in our game revolve around 3 positions - The goalkeeper position. Redmayne really needs to have a better command of his box and he left himself in no mans land on more than one occasion. Have to admit though the save in the second half was a good one.

I think NTS is a liability in the team, personally I prefer the way Aspro plays that  position. We will have to wait and see on that one.

Lastly I special mention to Sotirio who I have been highly critical of in the past and will continue to be if he continues the way he did. He just has no clue how to read the runs of other players around him. I know he is a young player but he needs to show me more. Not good enough.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a couple of direct attempts via corners and free kicks.

We don't need any of that useless short corner bulldust. Glad to see Jamieson is prepared to just whip one in.

    WST = WTF?

No doubt they had a point to make. Will we have to wait until xmas, or maybe even Easter next year to learn what that point is?

Not sure how a display of sour faces for just about all of the game qualifies as "supporting the team". Not sure how this is going to play out in the future. Right now they seem like the supporter version of Kerem Bulut: offside again and blaming others.

Kudos to Boris who is forced to carry the capo duties/burden by himself. I hope someone steps up to give him a hand.

Football commentators and many fans seems to confuse youth with potential. Being young doesn't guarantee you're going to get a lot better. Sotirio is lucky he has is electric pace because he lacks decision making, anticipation and composure. He's already 19 going on 20. Just look at the current crop of Socceroos and where their careers were at at that age.

I haven't seen enough of Youlley, Fofanah and MacDonald to cast proper judgement, though out of Aspro, Sotirio and Alessi, it is clear to me that only one has proper potential to make a real impact here or anywhere else.

    Thoughts on the match:

    - This game was winnable, shame the first half really set the tone for the match which we really weren't able to impose ourself on the match

    - On Brisbane, I wasn't really impressed by them but we really gifted them a foothold into the game & then conceded two goals off set pieces. After they got the two goal buffer they just focused on sitting deep, slowing down the game & not conceding. They achieved that without too many issues.

    - So good to see a few things like a formation change (3 at the back in second half) & the new Spanish coach having an influence on the playing style (DCM stepping back in between the two CB's allowing the fullbacks to bomb forward)

    - We struggled trying to play out from the back today, really didn't have enough options when playing out forcing so many long balls

    - We need to be more patient in the crowd. So many people getting frustrated when we aren't attacking going 100% all out (very EPL style) & we recycling the ball holding possesion. People questioning why we aren't playing a forward ball all the time not realising that the majority of miracle balls don't work out

    - Felt like our players preseason wasn't as good as Roar's, so many guys were completely out of puff at 60 minutes which was a lot different to the Roar's players

    First Half

    - Such an exciting start, every time we attacked we looked so good & Brisbane really struggled to get themselves in the game. We pressed really well in the opening parts of the game.

    - Hamil's disaster back pass, nothing to do with the keeper there but the only thing I'd say is that he hesitated a fraction of a second which meant that he didn't get to the ball. Still 100% on Hamil, not good enough

    - Goal changed the game & we started trying too hard to make things come off. We got a really tight offside call going our way & got back into the game.

    - Then conceding two from set pieces, first goal beaten to the ball with tall timber like Hamil & NTS you'd hope would never happen. Second goal was pinball but you've got to clear the ball on your first opportunity. Still to concede two goals like that, in the first game, opening game of the season is just :nono:

    - After going behind we had enough opportunities to get at least one possibly even two back but we just didn't hit the goal. Poor Pio could have had an open goal & he still would have missed but it just wasn't his night. Yes, he won't be like Dino running around like a headless chook & won't be great at closing down but he isn't that type of striker. Really impressed by his runs, holding up the ball & his ability to run at people. I felt like he was trying so hard, too hard & trying to manufacture something rather than just letting it happen. He will come good. Don't think anyone is surprised that NTS hit the ball out of the stadium from the 6 yard box. Got to take those chances, at 3-1 it left us with lots to do in the second half.

    Second Half

    - Crowd was very nervous & didn't really get into the game into the second half. I feel we were waiting for that second goal but it never came

    - Felt like Roar flicked a switch. No trying to play possesion, clearing first sign of danger, sitting deep, slowing down the game & hitting on the counter. They did well not to concede to get the crowd back into the game.

    - I was a bit disappointed by our lack of penetration in the second half, just didn't create enough chances. Felt the formation change didn't lead to a difference in the way we played or our chance creation. Dario didn't have the impact that I thought he would & neither did Bridge. Will be really interesting to see what happens when we get a fully fit Andreu, Dimas & Dario, Gol Gol, Bridge & Santa raring to go to see what happens in the front half

    Players:

Castelen - MOTM thought he was great but needed a bit more clinical

    Nichols - Fantastic :good:

Just heard Hamil substitution was because he was injured, first game back after 5 weeks but to get injured again after already losing Alberto is incredibly frustrating :nono: Understandable why Popa threw him back into the ring earlier than possible when we lost Alberto & Aspro had a very interrupted preseason with injury! Looks like Aspro will be thrown into mix next week!

Castelen did nothing for me tonight.

Too many touches, coughed up the ball. Pass was the better option a lot of the time and he didn't track back on many occasions.

Fitness could be an issue for him at this point in time. I hope we see his blistering speed and dangerous dribbling later on in the season. He has a menacing look and dribbles with intent. Which I think shadowed how ineffective he actually was tonight.

I love Sotirio's passion, but I get the feeling his early promise has fizzled out. I hope I'm wrong.

Enough has been said on the defence.

Andreu and Vidosic were great to see. A lot of creativity came from them. Was a joy to watch.

We'll see what happens later on down the track. No ACL this year, so let's hope when form and momentum strike we become the top 4 team I believe we can be.

Boris did great, saw him a few times getting upset with people in and near 57 not getting into it.

The guy at the start of the March running the chants did great, dunno his name but he had a goatee.

Of all the youth players we have brought in to the team, Aspro is by far the most promising. I love his composure on the ball for somebody so young. I don't see NTS as a liability he does what he does
