A series of defensive lapses combined with awful finishing to see the Western Sydney Wanderers lose 3-1 to Brisbane Roar.

The opening match of the season ended with the away side stealing the 3 points. Jamie McClaren, the new Brisbane #9, scored in the 9th minute, pouncing on a dreadful backpass from Hamill before chipping Andrew Redmayne to open the scoring.

Mitch Nichols gave the 14,000 strong crowd something to cheer just minutes later, as he was played through on goal by Scott Jamieson, before closing in and finishing smartly from an acute angle to level the match at 1-1.

Brisbane were back in front after 22 minutes, new signing Corona whipping a corner to the near post where it was met by Daniel Bowles with a powerful header that the Wanderers defender on the back post couldn't stop going over the line.

Another failure of set piece defence had the Roar take a 3-1 lead into the break, another Corona corner whipped into the near post, the ball bounced against a pair of Roar players before falling neatly into the path of McClaren who had his double by firing home from point blank range. Despite huffing and puffing, Western Sydney weren't able to pull a goal back in the second half and continued their run of 4 opening round matches without a win.

It could be said that the Wanderers had the better control of open play, but football isn't just about open play, two atrocious attempts at set piece defending and the Hamill backpass left the Wanderers with a mountain to climb and it was never going to be easy to get back to level pegging, and it proved such.

The Wanderers need to get their full first team outfit on the park week after week or they will continue to struggle. The ongoing problems in both defensive and offensive set pieces still exist despite another pre-season to work on them, and once again a lack of accurate finishing cost the club any hope of taking points from this match. The one positive of the Thursday kick-off is that there is as much time as possible until the next match.

Just heard Hamil substitution was because he was injured, first game back after 5 weeks but to get injured again after already losing Alberto is incredibly frustrating :nono: Understandable why Popa threw him back into the ring earlier than possible when we lost Alberto & Aspro had a very interrupted preseason with injury! Looks like Aspro will be thrown into mix next week!

Aspro or Alessi if the former isn't fit. Alessi will have a tough time with Cirio/Sanchez. I'd much rather the composure of Aspro even if he's not 100% fit.

Aguilar was really missing tonight. He's aggressive and can actually pick out a pass. With NTS or Hamill the ball gets floated diagonally upfield into nowhere or drifted to the sidelines, putting immediate pressure on Neville or Jamieson.

Dimas and a backtracking Nichols offered options on occasion though NTS thinks he is playing rugby and kicking for territory.

Agree with most of what has been said except....

    - not sure how redmayne can be too much to blame. Goals were from a dismal backpass and poor marking at set pieces + he came of his line twice to save 2 clear chances in 2ND half. I thought he was OK.

    - castelen is a very skilled player but I often feel like he takes too many touches and everyone else just ends up standing around while he dances. Sometimes I'd just like to see him go outside his man with one touch and cross it in.

    - I'm not sure how much better 'service' piovaccari will get. He had the castelen cut back on the penalty spot, Nichols put him through in behind and the bicycle kick one. 3 decent chances. I liked his hold up, turn and shoot that he did near the end of the first half though. Hopefully he comes good.

Overall good to be back on the terrace, shame about the result.

Well summed up Prydzopolis my thoughts similar. As Manfred said no reason to hang out certain players on mistake it can happen. Perhaps its good they all happened on the same night. We could and should have probably scored more goals so that is pleasing.

Interesting thing for me was both those corners we concede on for me Covic punches both those balls near enough to middle of six yard box and keeper to come for. And it continued through the night - it was like Kalac instructed Redmayne to sit and wait on the line? I don't know.

Overall the result is **** but the performance mistakes aside wasnt too bad.

Pio's been around long enough that next time he will bury those chances.

Also the general theme of lets bag NTS for the mistakes he makes but ignore the good stuff continues. He will won a fair few balls in the air and some nice challenges. Maybe I don't see as much bad as others.

Moment of the night the the ground announcer celebrating Butters 2nd non goal - hold you horses son!

All for a terrace split wst for life

No offence but WST looked like the crossed arms crew throughout the whole game..

And I think (or it looked like) they were taking the piss when the RBB was doing the Ale ale chant..

Not a good sight though, would look better if they joined in the chants..

One of the goals from the corner was partly his fault. The first was dealt with professionally.

Redmayne has good reflexes and agility. He's a good shot stopper. He's just not brave or commanding enough in my opinion. We have been having the same defensive problems for years. Tonight really amplified that for all the flapping about Covic did, his command helped put NTS and co in line. Never before have we given a hattrick of gifted chances so easily.

That's the concerning part. Someone needs to take leadership. I'm hoping that it Aguilar.

Kudos to Boris who is forced to carry the capo duties/burden by himself. I hope someone steps up to give him a hand.

    Where's Harry ?

Boris did great, saw him a few times getting upset with people in and near 57 not getting into it.

The guy at the start of the March running the chants did great, dunno his name but he had a goatee.

    Get him up there.

We wont be seeing too much of Harry unfortunately

Defence definitely needs to improve. This should start with the removal of Hamil, he was horrible last year I don't understand why Popa expected anything different. He really is a liability.

Overall the midfield was very solid, Castelan and Nichols both had solid outings, a good partnership developing down the left hand side, the holding midfielders where a little weaker than Poljak/La Rocca but they will improve.

And as for Federico he got into positions but he can't seem to finish. This is the second game in a row where he seems to shank every chance he gets, he should have got a couple of goals today with the chances he had in the box and while it would be unfair to blame him for the result (due to the defensive failings this game) if he continues this way he will cost us games. We need a ruthless striker to put the finishing touch on what was quite good service tonight.

Around me, loads of people had made their mind up on Redmayne before the game. Some guy even blamed him for the first goal. At the time I though the second was poor marking rather than keeper error. Id like to see replay when I can face it again. As second half went on he looked shaky to me, couple of times he hesitated.

Also not seen replay should we have had a penalty for the handball, not long after we had the goal disallowed?

My issue with Piovaccari was his head tonight. He was committing so many fouls. There were surely at least 5. Those are just wasted chances. Rather than foul, if he can win the ball cleanly, he might be able to lay off to a wise man and make a run into space. Similarly, challenging for a ball can cause the opposition to play a loose pass.

He's strong - he doesn't need to use his arms to literally push players off the ball. There's also no need to foul when you are receiving the ball.

Shonky defensive effort. We gifted them the goals and from then on were never able to put consistent pressure on them. I doubt that, with Alberto on the pitch, two of the three goals would have been conceded.

I have no idea what game you all were watching but perhaps you were watching it through last-season tinted glasses. Awesome game, entertaining, we were by far the better team. Discount the errors and we'll have a great season

    At half time I said,

at least it was more fun to watch.

2nd half was less fun though.

Just saw the Nichols goal again and Fed was right there for the deflection if Mitch hadn't hit it perfectly. Not saying it's a redemption for Piovaccari and he should've converted at least 1 of the 3-4 chances he had.

It's very very very early days, but I'm sensing a bit of the big bald fist pumping Croation no.9s about our o/s marquee.

What are people's thoughts in Neville & Pepper? For me they seemed non-descript.

I was happy with their performances tonight (especially Neville), I can't make much criticism about them for the time being.

Pepper seemed to pass a ball ok, but here just seemed so many errors coming from his play. I'm not convinced of either of them

Thought Neville was ok. Pepper worked hard but gives the ball away too much.

I still think fed will turn out ok, he'll start slotting soon

Neville was one of those players not marking a man on corners. I believe it was him that also picked up the needless yellow for a foul on Broich. I felt he covered the space ok defensively. Going forward, he wasn't utilised all that much.

Pepper was fairly invisible. On the odd occasion he was involved, he coughed up the ball once or twice with little pressure on him. He offered us very little holding possession, and nothing extraordinary covering space defensively.

Neville seems to have the old d'appuzzo instructions - don't get too far forward, don't overlap and just retain possession with simple sideways passes and stay out of the wingers way.

    The attacking winger¿?

Well spotted. An overconfident gambler advocating that Redmayne park two feet safely on the white chalk though? :P

Kalac didn't have as much of a tendency to punch as Covic but he wasn't shy trying to claim a high ball. I think he'll be working on Andrew's aerial ability. I dare say Spider improved Janjetovic's ability to deal with corners and crosses. The evidence is there and the challenge is set. Now it's up to Redmayne to want to put his body on the line. A little healthy competition never hurts.

Was it just my average view from the RBB or did Fred hit that half bicycle kick and then hit the ball again with his trailing knee? I'm convinced that's what happened, that's why it turned to **** so quickly...

I can't be bothered going back and quoting the comment but bless you Riva, you really are a miserable bastard. You keep going on about recruitment, hate to tell you but this is who we've got to work with so love it or leave it, it ain't gonna be changing anytime soon.

Yep. Practically had an airswing (a tiny touch ) on the shooting leg & caught his trailing leg.

Not sure what others think, but I think the theatrical was unnessecary. He looked to have had time to side foot it but was unaware of how free he was. That's what it looked like when I saw it live. However, the time he had is more difficult to decipher in the slow motion replay

    It's great to be back.

Biggest positive : watching my team go round.

Biggest negative : hordes leaving from 83 mins.

Bring on the rest of the season, loving it.

Heard a few muppets in Bay 65 whining as the game came close to the end including one moron from Row N say 'if we leave early it'll show the team our disgust'.

Having said that there were a few mums & dads with kids in tow & with a 8.00pm kick off on a Thursday it's to be expected that some wanted to leave before the ref blew time.
