    Honda Runs Over Wanderers

    mack

Keisuke Honda lead his star studded Melbourne Victory team to a dominant 4-0 win over the Western Sydney Wanderers tonight in Melbourne.

Western Sydney Wanderers were played off the park, battered against the formidable attacking quintet of Toivonen, Antonis, Barbarouses, Baena and the marquee man Honda. Victory took the lead after 10 minutes, Toivonen isolated Tarek Elrich on the byline, the Melbourne striker found Terry Antonis with a perfect diagonal cut-back, he turned and fired a lobbed cross to the back post, finding Honda all alone, taking advantage poor positioning from Raul Llorente to fire an uncontested header past Vedran Janetovic.

The procession began in earnest on the half-hour. Barbarouses played a simple ball into Baena, Hamill dived to intercept but missed, leaving Elrich to prevent a shot on goal, the winger paused momentarily to allow Tarek to slide off into the sunset before striking it home. The rout continued from the penalty spot, Elrich giving away a penalty by falling at the feet of Barbarouses and knocking out the Victory winger's feet with his head. Barbarouses took the penalty he won, shooting to the opposite direction of Janjetovic's dive for 3-0.

3-0 at the break and Victory looked hardly troubled, the Wanderers were inept across the park. That did not change at the break despite the withdrawal of Abraham Majok & Jordan O'Doherty in favour of Jaushua Sotirio and Marc Tokich. What little opportunity Western Sydney created in the Victory half was inevitably snuffed out by a poor ball or the numerous offside flags from the assistant referee.

Victory took the foot off the pedal, conserving energy while still maintaining a level of danger to the Wanderers goal when required. Honda continued to pull the strings from midfield, carving apart the Wanderers defence like a samurai sword through a Christmas turkey. The final blow came 10 minutes from time as Victory produced the goal of the game and likely the round.

A left foot Honda ball over the top found Barbarouses yet again, the Kiwi international on for a lovely first touch cross into the penalty area. Unselfishly, Toivonen killed the ball dead with a single touch into the path of Antonis. He put his laces right through the ball, Vedran dived the wrong way, and all the Wanderers defence could do was hopelessly appeal for an offside that was neither coming or deserved.

The 4-0 result was a bollocking that drew comparisons to the 2014 Round One 4-1 loss in Melbourne, and to more recent hammerings such as the 4-0 loss in Newcastle or the 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Sydney FC. The Wanderers remain in 8th place, there is little hope of a top 4 run let alone a trophy this year. The club haven't started a season this poorly since the disastrous 2014/15 season where they had a solitary point after 6 rounds and ended the season on just 18.

The Wanderers face the Central Coast Mariners at the Homebush Showground next Friday the 7th of December.

Can someone please explain why (arguably) our 2 best players in the past 2 years Antonis and Ikonimides were not re-recruited when they left Europe?

As has already been mentioned our recruitment when compared to Victory, Smurfs etc has been very poor.

My understanding is Popa and JT did sign off on a transfer deal for Antonis from his Greek club. Antonis turned around and said "wait a couple of weeks, I want to see how things go in Europe first."

nothing came up and he came crawling back to Popa who told him to F off. Antonis went on to sit on a bench somewhere in Holland I think then signed for MV for 3 years. So he should be with us if he wasn't so arrogant to think he'd make it in Europe.

I believe Ikon was still contracted to Lazio when he was with us and even into the off season.. Whether we chased him or not who knows. Popa might have been trying to recruit him for months and he went there. Ikon was happy to stay at WSW but not sure if the club pushed for him or not.

I think by the time Ikon has decided to leave Lazio we had already signed Kamau and Fitzgerald, not that is a good reason

PERTH WILL LOSE HALF THEIR TEAM IN JANUARY FOR THE ASIAN CUP.

That is our time to go on a winning streak......

ABJ being lazy I'm a little confused with this argument is it something I am not seeing?

I mean the guy isn't gonna run all over the place he is a genuine number 10 plays similar to Riquelme who also didn't run but had excellent vision and passing range. ABJ strength isn't his running but his vision, technique and passing which means he needs to have the ball at his feet and for the last 6 games plus FFA cup games he has provided a golden opportunity to score even when he is getting hacked to pieces.

    We can't afford a 10 who doesn't defend.

Baumojohann has 1 goal, 0 assists, 191 successful passes, won 3 tackles and made 1 interception.

Honda has 4 goals, 3 assists, 313 successful passes (with better passing accuracy in total, and in the opposition half), has won 15 tackles and made 14 interceptions

so if Popa wasn't so arrogant we'd have Antonis?

Hmmm I understand based on those stats although I am still batting for ABJ I am not sure I would want him defending (Please see Brisbane Roar penalty) and Honda is an all Rounder CM and different style compared to ABJ.

I would much prefer ABJ just a little outside the defending zone to launch our counterattacks and getting the ball higher up the pitch in our attacking zones because of the team we do have he is the only one that has the magic pass in his skill set.

In saying that as well ABJ is the type of player you build a team around and you allow a bit of freedom from defending duties. Currently I think Riera and ABJ are doing too much to win the ball back when I would like them higher up the pitch and its based on our spine which is too weak and the two of them plus our wingers do a lot more defending then they should be. Our DMs and Back four have to be more effective when they defend and win the ball which would be my counter argument.

Our defence is shite, we need every man we can to defend. We've got the second worst defensive record in the comp (only behind CCM).

I feel sorry for the Newcastle Utd fans having to wait 90 years plus for a title (and still waiting).. Thank god we had the team to win an ACL which is better than winning any toilet seat trophy IMO in the state this comp is run ATM so i couldn't care less if we end up 8th this season as we are building towards the future with a solid backroom first like we had when we started with Popa, i was not expecting MB to come in and create a miracle this season with no previous knowledge of the HAL and little knowledge of the players he inherited.. But change could not come sooner for Australian football

I’ll never feel sorry for that lot. I love it when they get relegated and the camera pans to a bunch of shirtless over weight biffs crying.

Tbf, if ABJ is higher up the pitch then wouldn’t Riera or someone else need to be up there with him to actually launch the counter?

Right. So from the previous posts I conclude that our greatest problem is that a) at one end of the pitch we can't put the ball in the net and, b) at the other end of the pitch we can't keep the ball out of the net.

I still don’t buy the Lederer tight arse argument and what’s worse is that every clown on Facebook parrots it without any idea what they’re talking about, after any loss or draw.

What exactly do people want from him? A blank chequebook? Businessmen like him make their money by spending as little as possible and that’s why they’re successful and have lots of money. It’s very easy to sit back and tell someone what to do with money that isn’t yours.

At the beginning of last season we had the most expensive squad in the league and if anyone’s driven down the M7 recently you’ll see that we aren’t exactly poor. People make out like Lederer is Mike Charlesworth trying to pocket salary cap money and reuse ice bath water... I don’t love the bloke by any means but I think he gets a pretty ordinary go from a lot of irrational fans.

Poor recruitment and lack of funding are two very different things.

a heap of money has gone into the club, the academy and training facilities. I doubt Babbel has come cheap.

In terms of squad spend, in the three wilderness years (spotless) we haven’t been consistent in spend. The first year we had Nico as marquee and most of his salary was covered by parent club, last year we lashed money on Reira and cejudo, this year just Reira.

Yeah I find it strange too. Loads of people chastising a guy who is literally bankrolling most of the club for not spending more money on footballers.

You can't have your cake and eat it too...everyone loves the academy and the emphasis on youth that comes with it (rightly so)...but at the same time we want to spend heaps of money on marquees?

It's a salary cap league...I know we haven't used the second marquee spot, but I think too many people are used to the EPL etc and want success at any cost.

Yeah it sucks losing but we've definitely been spoilt by our early success. I care much more about issues like how **** Spotless is than the actual results. I remember enjoying the ill fated season after the ACL even though we were losing, because it was still fun to go to Parra. Of course the highs of winning were tremendous fun, but honestly player recruitment is the thing I care least about.

There is a macabre joy to supporting a team which is **** ping: StringerBellend . I wouldn't want to do it forever, but I don't wanna be Man City either.

Spot on. Too many WSW fans want the romance of a working class underdog yet the bank account of a lucrative powerhouse.

Lederer also isn't the sole owner lol. We've spent the salary cap. So have a go at the recruitment across 3 different managers within a year rather than him supposedly being a tightarse. But look at the other things the club has invested in. the entire coaching staff for the AL team is top notch. The academy and new offices are on their way. If that's not investing for the future, I don't know what is.

We've still been reluctant to splurge on 2 marquees (and I can see why with such quality at Pio and Cejudo). I agree that the issues more relate to three different managers picking players before leaving (and all with their preferred style of play and player).

At this point the second marquee would have to be Australian because until Ziggy is Australian we have 5 visa spots taken up.  Is there anyone?  Or should we wait until Ziggy's citizenship comes through or we release one we've got...?

That's true. Jedinak? Or a "mutual termination"?

I'd take Jedi in January. Its the hard man in midfield that we need.

Ziggler Aussie this month, Bruno plays for us vs City on New Years Day :xnod:

It's either Bruno or Jedi IMO as both will want Marquee deals.

    Unless Riera goes.
