  • Jarred Gillett Steals Points For City

    mack

One of the most abysmal displays of A-League officiating from full time referee Jarred Gillett has seen Melbourne City walk away with a completely undeserved three points in their match against the Wanderers tonight.

While the match ended 3-2, Gillett decided the game with two decisions that both favoured City. The first, a call of 'deliberate' handball that was quite obviously ball to hand, and the second an inexplicable decision to call play on from a Wanderers free kick, watch the Wanderers score from it, then call it back.

The first goal for City came from the incorrect handball call, where once again an A-League referee decides a ball deflected off feet into a player who hasn't moved, from a meter away, is somehow 'deliberately' playing at it, with Harry Novillo scoring from the ensuing free kick. Bruno Fornarolli put City two in front after 25 minutes who curled a strike from the the edge of the 18 yard box past Andrew Redmayne.

Western Sydney gave themselves a lifeline on the half hour mark, with Mitch Nichols blasting through Thomas Sorensen. The second half was all Wanderers, who finally equalised via an own goal to Aaron Hughes after neat work from Romeo Castelen.

The Wanderers were robbed of the lead by Gillett, and they never recovered as City pulled back, parked the bus and began to rotate non-stop tactical fouls to halt the Wanderers attack. It came as no surprise that City managed to take advantage of the awful officiating, as Novillo scored a brace just minutes later against a deflated away side.

For a second week in a row the referee has decided the game against the Wanderers, just another example of the ongoing systemic failures by the FFA to ensure their officials know the rules, and apply them equally.

Pio tried his guts out last night. Whilst I'm still not as appreciative of him as others, I'll definitely accept that he has been improving and making more of a genuine effort. Also he's strength is very impressive. BUT, he hasn't scored many goals and is leading the off side count. Like any sport, results are what matter and for a marquee that's especially true. Hopefully it starts coming together for him because he's definitely trying to put in the work.

Redders did have a shocker and a blitz in one game. I think the city support messed with his head a little. He got nervous. The goals that were scored I have to hand credit to city, they were good and any keeper would've struggled to save them.

So we've lost. It's ok, I couldn't ask for more than what we've been gifted this season after a dismal last season. I was always going to be happy if we at least remained competitive this season and we've gone above and beyond that. Now a home derby. Cannot wait. It's gonna be tough but I think we'll take this one.

I think we have been worked out a little bit. People know if they press us we can be rattled a little. Have to be aware of this in next game in the derby as I am sure Arnie will use this as a tactic. I am also a bit worried about our drop in form and Sydney FC's lift in form, however I still think we have the better players to win next week.

Top day out despite the result.

Aami park is a quality venue.

Brilliant effort by the travelling support and great to meet a whole bunch more wanderers fans.

City's support is garbage. Highlight of the night....

    'This city is yours

    This city is yours

    20,000 empty seats

    Are you ******* sure'

Trifiro clearly wishes he was still playing for us. Acknowledging and thanking the away support.

Hard to know what to say about the disallowed goal - if a goal like that had been given against us I would have been upset.

Having said that we had enough opportunities to win a few games so no one to blame but ourselves.

Again though was a brilliant night even with the result not going our way.

    Roll on to next week.

No chance of a refereeing square up next week. Its East Sydney... though we are still owed for the Sotirio no goal.

We've been ripped 5 points in 2 weeks by FULL TIME ref's. Gillett will probably be dropped like Williams last week, just in time for Stebre to give a penalty in the box against us on the 97th minute under Arnie's instruction, to break the nil all deadlock...

    • Football isn’t like egg ball chasing games. It is low scoring hence the excitement lasts often right to the end, even 0-0 means it’s anyones game. Therefore you also get ‘unfair’ results where the best team doesn’t win. We saw that tonight.

    • It was still a great advert for the HAL. End to end, both teams out on their feet. Beats the manufactured Big Bash crap into a cocked hat.

    • They scored 3 brilliant goals. We scored two lucky goals. Despite all the chances we created we have the same issue as last season, we cannot convert. This needs addressing. A goal poacher and we would be complete. We are paying Pio a hell of a lot of money and yes he is improving and yes he is trying his guts out but he aint scoring. That is what he is paid for.

    • I think city are the biggest threats this year, yet we were the best team on their own patch. This is a massive positive for us. It will give the players a lot of confidence.

    • Our travelling support was awesome.

    • How good is our team to watch this Season. After last year we are dominating, playing good football. It’s mainly all positive guys.

The only point that matters....  :grouphug:

Blaming the referee for a loss like this is just lazy, especially when he actually made the right decision. Should be looking at ourselves and our complete inability to finish chances. If we're not careful next week we might be level on pts with SFC.

Oh my, surely you're extracting la urine...  :smurfnono:

Don't know if anyones mentioned this, I cbf scrolling through all the posts, but why were we slipping all the time? Even the ballboy/girl slipped over at one stage! Melbshiity players went down 1 or 2 times but it seemed we were being hit by snipers. Wrong stud choices? ......maybe it was only slippery on our side of the pitch!

We need to have a chat about free kicks just outside the box too.

    First Perf then another tonight.

Bad positioning by Redmayne. Spider is no Ron Corry and Redmayne is no Sir Ante as we have learnt so far this season.

Good point Jack, I did notice it. Pitch was saturated before game as usual but the drainage seemed to be crap, leaving slip and slides everywhere.

I think the referee definitely had a role to play in the final outcome of this match. I know what your saying though, we were our own worst enemies. We conceded 3 goals tonight and missed a host of chances. Even with the most biased referee we still should have won this game.

As shitty as it was, he actually made the right decision in the end. I was as angry as anyone when it happened, but looking at it again can completely understand why he pulled it back. If he'd just let Kisnorbo get back into position like he should have, then the reaction to this match would be a whole lot different.

I am not sure you can say its the right decision. If he blew the whistle, then you can play the free kick, which is what we did. He simply should not have blow his whistle.

Yeah he made the mistake of blowing the whistle early, thing is though he has every right to correct his decision and bring it back to be retaken.

Serious question, on what grounds? Under what law?

The law of common sense. I mean imagine Topor being pulled out of position to talk to the referee, then before he has a chance to get back into position Fornaroli collects the ball where Topor would have been and scores? We'd probably be up in arms about it.

Because it's the referee pulling the player out of position it's only fair he's allowed to get into position. Obviously this wouldn't apply to things like subs and quick free kicks because that's the teams own fault for being in a position for that to happen.

There is NO rule which states, before a 'quick' free kick is allowed to be played the defender must be in position. Please correct me if I am wrong but I doubt I am. As long as the ref is ready, which he was coz he blew the whistle, it's play on. END OF...  :smurfnono:

Yeah I noticed too. You could see the water kick up pretty clearly, so a very wet pitch. The ballboy almost faceplanting was a laugh though  Looks like all the Melbourne boys had their metal studs on

We didn't deserve to win but deserved a draw.

I don't care if the referee blew the whistle too quickly for Kisnorbo to get back, one of the first things you're taught in any sport is that you play to the whistle and that's what we did, we shouldn't be penalised for that, not our problem.

Questionable placement by Redmayne for that free kick, I had a bad feeling the whole time he was setting up before it and sure enough... I also thought we were very slow learners with the other two goals. El Tuna and Novillo were cutting inside at every opportunity they had. The second goal he beautifully placed and it was always gonna be hard to save but the final goal, the minute Novillo got the ball everyone knew he was gonna cut inside and shoot cause he's that type of player but no one seemed to do anything about it. Apart from that I thought we weren't too bad. We had to lose eventually so I'd rather it happen sooner than later.

It's pretty funny I don't think most of the people calling for Fred to get the boot actually know why they're saying it, they just regurgitate what they hear others say cause it's the cool thing to do.

That is pretty insulting actually.Everyone can have an opinion, it doesn't have to be the same as yours nor a copy of someone elses. I watch him very closely every game and have formed my own opinion.

Yes his strength is good, but it often results in a freekick. My main gripe though is the poor finishing, body positioning and the anticipation / effort to support when we make a break. Yes he runs up in support, but if you watch closely he appears to settle for being behind the defender which takes him out of play.

Last week i actually thought it was his best game for us with lots of determined runs and using his size well. I didnt however last night was his best.

I have only ever been critical of 3 wsw players - bouzanis, adeleke and pio. I certainly don't hate him though, just wish he offered more

All in all, apart from losing i thought last night was really high quality attacking football from both sides. Could have been 6 all.

Is this why he is the second most offside player in the league?

This arguement is futile and doesn't make sense.  :smurfnono:

I mean that the defender gets in between him and the cross. Nothing to do with offside

When Pio is on the pitch we play with 10 men. He has no end product and adds very little to the build up. Him slipping up every time he gets partially in behind the defence doesn't help. Thos was the game I gave up on Pio

    Absolutely top away trip!!!!!

Was great to meet up with some of our fellow forumites at the pub before the game for a chat and then put in a solid shift on the terrace, where our capo's for the night did a great job in leading us all! Well done lads!

Would've been great had we got the result but still, win, lose or draw....

We'll be firing next week at a packed Wanderland v E*FC...can't wait!

The City support is absolutely woeful, they are an absolute joke! Had a great walk back into the city with several City fans though and good banter all round...

Great weekend away, can't wait for the next big trip down here v Victory next month, that will be epic! Looks like we have a good sized contingent heading down, so should be a cracker!

All that aside, the real issue is....

What is Jamo up to here.???

Great to meet a number of forumites for the first time last night. A top trip all round.

The result was disappointing, it gives Brisbane the impetus in the plate race. We have to take our chances better. They didn't have many, but were clinical when they did.

Castelen was unbelievable off the bench, but **** I wish he finished that one on one.

As of tomorrow, it's been two years since we last beat ESFC. Looking forward to next week, a win against them is overdue.

Anyone else think we tend to start games slowly? Similar against Perth we seem to spend the first 5-10 minutes of every game giving the ball away and putting ourselves under pressure.

On the diasallowed goal. He out whistle to his mouth, kisnorbo Didn't get back, he blew it, goal should stand

That said its out lack of finishing that cost us. City only had a few chances but they took em. We had loads were the final shot was poor.

That is one of the best grounds to watch football at, and great Rbb away support

Re Pio, like him or not, the proof is in poppas handling of him, the leagues top strikers are not taken off 60th min, popa just managing the situation for now, he'll be gone at some point, probably just see the contract out.

Romeo is wonderful in changing the momentum / flow of a game, but equally very frustrating. At 2-2, one on one, even an avearge finisher, makes that. Can't see him staying beyond this year either.

Win streak was good while it lasted, (so much for our fantastic defence), back to reality now, and maybe a loss came at the right time to give us a bit more edge against the smurfs next Saturday

So the anger from last night has subsided a little, we had more than enough chances to win two games last night regardless of the ref decision. We have been quite fortunate that Fathead has been in form in font of goal, he was probably due an off night, but then he is not supposed to be a go to striker. It really is games like last night that you need your big marquee striker to step up. Not faulting Pio's work rate, and strength on the ball, although for a big fella he falls over a lot, but we need more from him. A big striker like him should be a target man and a handful. I have known strikers like him that do **** all during a game, but what they do is stick the ball in the net when it matters.

Anyway lasts nights game reminds me of some of the ESFC derby games from the last few years, MCFC play on the counter that kind of way, very similar to an ESFC when they had Ibini. Just before MCFC scored you kind of had the feeling that we would regret those missed chances.

At least the undefeated thing is off our backs going in to the derby. I am sure part of Arnie's verbal diarrhea for the coming week would have gone along the lines of they were the last to beat us and they have no fear coming to our 'shed' blah blah blah..........  From Tuesday onward no doubt the shite from Arnie will commence.

Popa's record v Arnie is not great, time to get that put right.

What annoys me is that if we'd made any other pass from that free kick, it would have just been play on. Gillet's making assumptions about our tactics and set piece plays, and so looks like an idiot when we exploit his mistakes.

I wish NPL and A-League ran concurrently so he could be demoted to div 3. for a couple of weeks. Bet we'll see him up and running next week though.

That was their biggest non-derby home crowd of the season. Trouble with City (nee Heart) is that they don't really represent anyone other than someone who doesn't want to support Victory. Changing your name and colours too doesn't lend itself to loyalty. They have always averaged around 7-9k unless it's a derby. Shame because every game they are involved in is entertaining as.......

On a separate note if Brisbane lose by two today we go back to top of the league. If they lose 1-0 we have identical records, points, goals scored and conceded so they would be on top alphabetically. Come on Welly!
