A 69th minute goal by Argentinian Import Jeronimo Neumann in front of 8,950 fans has given Adelaide their second win of the season in the Wanderers first defeat to A-League opposition.
The Wanderers proved yet again they will be competitive and will not be the whipping boys of the A-League. The Wanderers squandered numerous chances including a cross going past the face of goal, with nobody able to put a boot on it. Marquee star Ono had a few chances, taking the ball 10 metres before ultimately putting the ball over the bar.
Mateo Poljak came within inches of scoring the Wanderers first A-League goal with a 25 yard shot parried by Eugene Galekovic, before bouncing onto the line and regathered. Wanderers chances were rare and few but there were a few highlights in the midfield, with some good touches and passing by Mooy and Ono, who have been touted as a strong midfield combination.
A few bad passes however highlighted how quickly the squad had been put together, and the chemistry that had yet to form.
A Nikolai Topor-Stanley foul in the box led to a penalty being awarded by the match official Brenton Howard, in charge of his first A-League match, in the 65th minute. The resulting penalty kick by Jeronimo was expertly saved by Ante Covic bringing delight to the travelling RBB fans and those watching at home.
Expert defending shut down any Wanderers attack and only 4 minutes later, Adelaide's counter put the Wanderers on the back foot. Iain Ramsey expertly held up the ball before laying it off to Jeronimo who put the ball past rushing Covic.
A 79th minute substitution brought Elrich onto the park, which saw a change in the mentality on the pitch, with a very attacking Wanderers pushing forward in the final 10 minutes.
With only a few minutes remaining Haliti was on the end of an Elrich cross, which he put straight into the arms of Galekovic.
Coach Tony Popovic agreed there were some positives but still leaves Adelaide disappointed.
“There were positives, we had some good passages but unfortunately we didn’t have the end product tonight,†Popovic said. “We leave here with our heads held high but we are disappointed to a degree.â€
“Our defence has been solid, but we conceded a soft goal tonight and at the other end our final ball let us down.
“Adelaide are a good side, they are match hardened and you can tell in the way that they are playing currently.â€
The Western Sydney Wanderers have a week to prepare for their inaugural Sydney Derby at Parramatta Stadium on the 20th of October.
