  • JP Reign Starts With 3-1 Win In Gosford

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers began their first match of the post-Babbel era with Jean-Paul de Marigny taking charge and leading the Wanderers to a 3-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners. Goals from Nicolai Muller and Mitch Duke either side of a Matt Simon penalty had the Wanderers in front before Simon Cox stamped his debut with a late sealer.

Having kicked off, within 30 seconds the Wanderers should have scored. Kamau busted the Mariners defensive line and his cut back to Pirmin Schwegler gave him a chance at the near post 3 yards from goal. Mark Birighitti smothered the chance, but the ball spilled out and Schwegler couldn't make contact with a back-heel to an empty net.

After 20 minutes of domination the Wanderers pulled the Mariners apart again, Muller was fed by Kamau and after some good back to goal play from Mitch Duke, Kwame Yeboah fired from the edge of the penalty area but blasted it over the bar. Daniel De Silva had the first Mariners shot in anger shortly after, firing across the face of goal and going well wide.

Both sides had golden chances to open the scoring near on the half-hour. First the Wanderers through Kamau's wide cross, the ball made it to an unmarked Muller and his side half-volley ballooned up in the air. The Mariners counter-attacked and Jordan Murray cut inside Dylan McGowan, onto his left foot and with the goal beckoning and only Lopar to beat, he failed to test Lopar and his curling attempt to hit the top-corner sailed over the bar. Muller had another glorious chance, tip-toeing past the Mariners central defenders then sliding the ball past the far post for a goal-kick. Duke had his own chance a minute later via Muller, but his first touch into the penalty area was abysmal and flew out for a goal-kick.

The Wanderers finally converted their dominance into a 1-0 lead 5 minutes before half-time. Central Coast setup to play out from the back for no apparent reason at a goal-kick despite the Wanderers showing a clear desire to press high up the park, Jack Clisby decided to send it back to a central defender but vastly underhit the ball, leaving Yeboah with a simple low ball across to Muller who took one touch near the penalty spot then blasted past Birighitti.

Matt Simon entered the fray after half-time as the Mariners moved to a two up front system. Daniel Lopar was called into action after in the 52nd minute, after a dubious non-call for a handball from Simon, Murray struck at goal and forced Lopar into a great one handed save. Kamau followed shortly after with his own chance, Muller with a lay off header that Kamau completely fluffed his lines on to double bounce it over the bar.

The 57th minute marked the introduction of Irish international Simon Cox to make his Wanderers debut for Yeboah, the Mariners responding with Jair joining Simon up front as Murray exited the contest. Milan Duric fired wide after picking up the scraps from a Georgievski slide tackle. Schwegler came within inches of doubling the Wanderers advantage as he touched the ball with a long range shot. Muller weaved magic on the by-line to cut back for Mitch Duke, Birighitti threw himself into the save and took the ball to the face and was down for some time getting treatment.

Simon Cox made his first impact in the A-League by winning a penalty in the 75th minute as Tommy Oar dragged him down from behind as Cox was about to shoot. Mitch Duke stepped up for the penalty kick and his cheeky panenka went straight down the middle for 2-0.

The Mariners had a penalty of their own almost instantly, Simon getting lucky as the ball dropped in the area and Schwegler attempted to clear it but only knocked the back of the strikers leg. Simon as is his want, blasted the penalty and Lopar had dived the wrong way to make it 2-1.

Lopar saved his team yet again for the season, the Mariners worked the ball out wide, launched a cross that found the head of Dylan Ruiz-Diaz, and with the crowd expecting the back of the net to bulge, they were denied a celebration by a magnificent left footed diving save that he also pushed out to avoid any hope of a rebound goal.

As the Mariners pushed for an equaliser, the Wanderers found themselves on the counter deep into stoppage time. Keanu Baccus launched the attack with a neat ball to substitute Mo Adam, after he made a hash of an earlier chance this time around he picked the perfect pass for Muller, Muller tapped inside for the straight run of Cox and the Irish marksman made no mistake passing it into the back of the net to seal a 3-1 win.

The Wanderers face Sydney FC at Kogarah Oval next weekend on Saturday February 8, kick-off at 5pm.

    The good:

    - we ******* won!
    - Kamau suddenly learned to cross, though under little pressure

    - We’ve started to use Muller well. Though I think it will require either Baccus or Schwegler getting forward a bit to fill the gap when he makes those runs

    - We have a coach who coaches players during the game. Though the quality of that advice is yet unknown.

    - Mcgowan has improved with a bit of a gap. Still at least one shocking error.

    - Mo Adam listens to senior players when he’s given a spray. It resulted in a fantastic goal.

    The Bad:

    - First and foremost Yeboah

    - We didn’t nail down any of the goals from open play that we really should have (with the exclusion of the last goal though that was a 3 on 2)

    - Schwegler giving away more pens

    - we completely went to sleep and backed off the ball from the 82nd minute (Sydney will ******* murder us)

    - Lacking a clear path to goal that isn’t constantly Muller breaking the line.

    - CCM would have been up 3-0 if they could hit a target. Top 4 teams will out at least half those chances away

    - Hate to say it but duke is going backwards. He needs an early goal against Sydney to get his mojo back

    Thoughts?

A lot of people will agree with me here but I think we played a lot better considering previous performances. In saying that Mariners are a very poor team and Sydney are on another level.

I thought Muller was incredible. He skipped past so many players, sending them for a hotdog but couldn’t convert his chances. Good finish though to grab his goal.

I thought Yeboah and Duke were very poor as was Georgevski.

Very happy with Cox’ performance. His won a penalty (should’ve been a red as well) and scored a great team goal. He started off slow but made a big impact.

I thought this was one of Baccus’ best games this season. He was influential. Very happy with his performance. The only issue I had was his failed clearance that made Schwegler make that mistake. Also brilliantly set up the 3rd goal.

Mo Adam learnt a very valuable lesson today. Failed to pass to Muller and he rightfully got a mouthful. 5 minutes later he executes what Muller told him to.

Happy with McGowan today for once. Him and the defence will need to step up overall next week.

Lopar is one of the signings of the season and deserves every bit of credit he gets. Great performance today and happy he kept that little s*** Dylan Ruiz Diaz out. He is so arrogant that kid. Thinks his top s***.

Overall we will need to step up big time next week. Could be a season defining game. This win means nothing really against a poor side. Hopefully the result of next week isn’t what we all think it could be. Especially because Baumjohann is out I wonder who is going to pull the strings for them.

Bring on the smurfs! C’mon you Wanderers.

Hoping Cox will be our new Santa, as we've been missing one. Still for the life of me don't understand what anyone sees in McGowan. He's got very little confidence. A win is a win.

Santalab wore a santa hat, what exactly kind of hat does Cox wear?

Good write up, I thought McGowan had his first half decent game for us, didn't rate him at all really. Lopar is one of the best goalies the AL has seen in my opinion, he has so much quality. he will play a very important role again next week I suspect.

Muller's thought process is 2 or 3 steps ahead of those around him. Sometimes he has to check back and allow for that, he shows us his real class at times. If we can get those around him on the same time zone then just maybe he could be something really special for us. Perhaps Cox coming in who has good experience to at least Championship level will help with that/

Get the ball to Cox in the box and I feel he will have the quality to hurt sides. He took up some good positions, won a penna and a clinical finish. He could be very good for us.

Might be best to have Yeboah on the bench next week, He made a few decent crosses when he switched with Kamau but his first touch and finishing is dreadful. Juke took his penna well but he is also out of sorts. Not sure what was going on with DG today, poor for him.

CCM are a terrible side but we were worthy winners. Hopefully its gives us a bit of confidence for next week because we are going to need it! I will be at Kogarah and lets face it a 5 or 6 goal thrashing isn't impossible..

    But lets enjoy tonight...

Well, we have a win under Jean-Prick de Marigny but I honestly feel if Babbel was still in charge we would of had the win anyway. Looks like JP is sticking to 3-5-2 formation which is just pure sex IMO...but I still think JP is a slimey prick.

Duke's penalty goal was quite cheeky.

Good to see my boy Mo provide a great assist to Muller, the boy does listen after a spray.

The derby is going to be interesting, the Smurfs performance against Roar the other night was not their best display of football and it would be nice to see the Wanderers provide with their 2nd loss of the season...see what happens.

100% - I thought there was no real difference between JP and Markus...apart from Speed spending less time ragging on JP...

Muller was outstanding, and the best part is hopefully in Cox we've got a guy who can do the basic stuff of chucking it in goal when given the opportunity

all jokes aside i think that last line is very important, we might be terrible right now but we shouldnt let that sour the wins we have, in our current situation its too easy to see all the negatives and nothing else

Biggest difference i noticed was that we looked to counter at pace instead of the tedious, glacial-paced recycling of possession that babbel was pushing. We actually have a bit of pace in the side so it makes sense.

I thought duke was useful running channels to stretch out their centrebacks and create space for muller - much better than starting wide and trying to cut in and skying shots like he was under MB.

Baccus broke up play really well, good to have him back.

Cox will be useful - he is clever at finding space, uses his body well and is a bit combative. If he is anywhere near fit enough, start him next week.

Having said all that the coasties play very open and gave us plenty of space to play. We certainly looked better against them than we did in the game at the start of the season.
