  • Juric Packs Goal For Saudi Second Leg

    mack

A second half strike from Tomi Juric gave the Western Sydney Wanderers a 1-0 win in the first leg of the Asian Champions League final against Al-Hilal.

A record Parramatta Stadium crows of 20,053 packed into the Wanderers fortress for the first leg of the 2014 AFC Champions League. Facing the Red & Black were the "Blue Wave" of Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia. With billionaires looking on from the corporate boxes the first leg the Wanderers took a giant leap towards lifting the crown of Champions of Asia.

The game started in a manner that did not reflect the eventual result. Moments after kick off Alfaraj broke into the area on the left flank but couldn't find a team-mate and Western Sydney cleared the ball behind for a corner. Al-Hilal dominated possession and the chances but couldn't find any cracks in the Wanderers defensive armour. Moments before half-time Al Hilal had their best chance of the night after a defensive clearance smashed into Mateo Poljak's face and rebounded for the benefit of Al-Hilal, with Alshamrani being played through on goal but skying his shot.

Supersub Tomi Juric came on in the 58th minute and it took him all of 6 minutes to make his mark on the final, a peach of a cross from Anthony Golec found the tall timber up front, the big number 9 connecting with a boot that saw the ball slide under Abdullah Mohammed Al Sudairy to give the Wanderers a priceless goal to take on the long trip to the Middle East for the second leg.

As the clock ticked past the 70 minute mark Juric nearly had a brace, he picked up the ball after Digao over-ran it, and Juric went on a mazy run at the defence. Juric opened up enough space for a placed shot from the edge of the penalty area, which beat the keeper but not the woodwork, the ball bouncing away from the path of Mark Bridge who would have been faced with a tap-in.

Al-Hilal had the better of the match but lacked a truly cutting edge and it proved to be their downfall. Without an away goal to show for their trip, the Wanderers will win the Champions League trophy with a win or draw at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh. If the Wanderers can continue their streak of scoring in away ACL matches their opponents will need at least three goals to win the tie.

The Wanderers next match is the second leg of the AFC Champions League final, against Al-Hilal at the King Fahd International Stadium, Riyadh. Kick-off is at 4:30am on Sunday the 2nd of November.

We are happy with a win tonight in our home with our fans and wish to discuss this moment which is one of its kind for a new club that was put together 2 seasons ago..so either contribute with discussion of tonight's game or go away.

Holy **** what a night. Didn't know what to expect. This club just keeps raising the bar

Had a chat to a few Al Hilial fans on the way out of the stadium, they seemed nice enough.

But all you Al Hilial keyboard warriors - if you want to keep thinking we're the underdogs, that suits WSW just fine - we've beaten every team yet who didn't take us seriously! I'd take an RBB over 70,000 "fans" given free tickets to wave plastic flags any day of the week too

Alhilal played well tonight with a fierce attack force but they failed to score. 18 shots and 65% possession. However, the thing that counts is the score. You might have won the battle but we will win the war.

If any WSW fans are coming to the 2nd leg please let me know if you have any questions or request. I will be more than happy to help.

Al Hillal keyboard warriors are the best.

Telling us to worry about 70,000, your boys bricked it in front of 20k.

Join up with Lippi and you can wipe away the tears together. You just don't come to Parra and expect to get a result.

    Come on you Wanderers!

a few centimetres the other way and we would've got a second when Juric hit the post.

this is what annoys me the most about football, people think just because you try to play this fancy, nice clean passing Barcelona style of play, you expect to win games.

The game has been around for many years beforehand and it will be around for many years to come.

Football is a very simply game.

Defend well, don't make stupid mistakes, beat your opponent with pace and skill, and take your chances in front of goal

I am surprised by the number of people who uncovered their true identity after the game. Our fans have been nothing but respectful to the opponents, We are expecting the same from WSW fans. So far your fans look like GE more than we do. On the pitch its ok to do what you like (That turn your back to the pitch). However, we expect respect outside the pitch like we respected you.

Sure would be nice if we could play games against teams from other countries without the whole thing descending into a vilification slanging match every time. I expect better tolerance from my 8 year old then some of you lot are displaying right now (and I don't care who said the other prefers the company of livestock first - it's just not necessary).

iCaaqe - For the past week or two on this forum we have had quite civilised discussions with other Al-Hilal supporters with some good banter thrown in occasionally.

So why are you acting like a d1ckhead and making a bad name for your fellow fans?

Accept your defeat graciously, be happy that you're still well in this tie and look forward to the second leg in your home.

And if you're going to resort to the same dirty tactics off the field that the Guangzhou fans tried on us and failed at it, then you will not be a worthy winner of this competition even if you do beat us next week.

Now either grow up or shut up!
