  • Juric Packs Goal For Saudi Second Leg

    mack

A second half strike from Tomi Juric gave the Western Sydney Wanderers a 1-0 win in the first leg of the Asian Champions League final against Al-Hilal.

A record Parramatta Stadium crows of 20,053 packed into the Wanderers fortress for the first leg of the 2014 AFC Champions League. Facing the Red & Black were the "Blue Wave" of Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia. With billionaires looking on from the corporate boxes the first leg the Wanderers took a giant leap towards lifting the crown of Champions of Asia.

The game started in a manner that did not reflect the eventual result. Moments after kick off Alfaraj broke into the area on the left flank but couldn't find a team-mate and Western Sydney cleared the ball behind for a corner. Al-Hilal dominated possession and the chances but couldn't find any cracks in the Wanderers defensive armour. Moments before half-time Al Hilal had their best chance of the night after a defensive clearance smashed into Mateo Poljak's face and rebounded for the benefit of Al-Hilal, with Alshamrani being played through on goal but skying his shot.

Supersub Tomi Juric came on in the 58th minute and it took him all of 6 minutes to make his mark on the final, a peach of a cross from Anthony Golec found the tall timber up front, the big number 9 connecting with a boot that saw the ball slide under Abdullah Mohammed Al Sudairy to give the Wanderers a priceless goal to take on the long trip to the Middle East for the second leg.

As the clock ticked past the 70 minute mark Juric nearly had a brace, he picked up the ball after Digao over-ran it, and Juric went on a mazy run at the defence. Juric opened up enough space for a placed shot from the edge of the penalty area, which beat the keeper but not the woodwork, the ball bouncing away from the path of Mark Bridge who would have been faced with a tap-in.

Al-Hilal had the better of the match but lacked a truly cutting edge and it proved to be their downfall. Without an away goal to show for their trip, the Wanderers will win the Champions League trophy with a win or draw at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh. If the Wanderers can continue their streak of scoring in away ACL matches their opponents will need at least three goals to win the tie.

The Wanderers next match is the second leg of the AFC Champions League final, against Al-Hilal at the King Fahd International Stadium, Riyadh. Kick-off is at 4:30am on Sunday the 2nd of November.

Anyone going to comment on the streaker? Great tackle by security but really, the guy who did it was embarassing.....

seriously that was a farkn top tackle. He was shaping up to get him round the legs from about 2 metres away, committed and it was like a tree fell down in the woods. If only the doggies had him in their squad then maybe the premiership might have become a reality

Haha gold...as much as he was an idiot for doing it....it slowed the game down and killed off their momentum due to security coming on etc.

Al Hilal, this is why we are more than a football club, you can have your big stadium, money, private jets, and private hotels.

But I wouldn't trade for any of it while we have these type of men as players

I agree, real men played today in your side

but I've to tell u something, jets and hotels are not going to score, u'll not see them

next week u'll see blue fighters on the pitch, quality players, and more than 65,000 chanting for them

you got a good team, but that's it believe me, u should be proud of your team reaching the final, coz saturday u have no chance

Great result but not getting too carried away just yet. Wanted to be there tonight but circumstances prevented it. Covic MOM in a performance that can be improved on but did the job. I'm very optimistic for a win next week. Any big plans for the return leg down in Sydney (I'm living on Gold Coast now) for next week. I'll be there if so!

    I don't know mate,

the game will start about 4:30 am I think, and I have no idea about what pubs anywhere that will be open at that time on a Saturday night especially with the lockout laws.

A live site will be a problem, due to the time and also foxtel will charge a fortune for it.

it will be difficult, but hopefully if enough people get behind it then hopefully something can happen

With another game under their belts the team short be approaching match fitness after a preseason interrupted regularly for ACL games.  Tomi will be the better for some match time after 2 months off injured.  Spira looked good for his first run since the World Cup.  I expect rapid improvement from the team now.  Its a pity the final is now instead of a months time.

Looking towards the A-League Tomi and Spira add a lot and Castelen, Saba and Ruka will make a huge difference in attack as they get fit.

Wow, what a night. Out of every game I've been to since that 0-0 draw with CCM in Round 1, 2012, by far tonight was the best atmosphere I've ever witnessed at a Wanderers game. Having been a member since day one it was brilliant to finally see the crowd number break 20k. RBB was phenomenal tonight and the stands really lifted as well. Unbelievable.

Juric and Spira made such a huge difference when they came on, seriously changed the game. Hopefully they both pull up alright during the week and are fit to start in the return leg. Covic was sublime in the last 10-15 mins and saved our bacon. Haliti and Golec also worked hard all night and they were killing it down the right in the second half.

Unfortunately Mullen was absolutely woeful and I'd like to see him dropped for the second leg, with Spira coming in (if he's fit). Would love to see this line up in Riyadh if Spira and Juric pull through, and Santa with his shoulder, think it's pretty much our full-strength ACL side:

    Covic

    Cole - NTS - Spira - Golec

    Poljak - La Rocca

    Santa/Haliti - Saba - Bridge

    Juric

Conflicted about fitting Santa, Haliti and Bridge into those two wing positions but Juric made such a huge difference I think he's a MUST start if he's fit enough. Don't wanna push him if he's not though and make it a recurring injury so I'll trust Popa's judgement on this one. Al-Hilal couldn't deal with him, his presence and hold-up play were sublime, let alone his finishing.

Would love to see a better performance in the second leg and I feel like we'll need one if we're gonna get over the line. It's hard not to get carried away after tonight but there's a job still to be done and I fully believe we can do it. We've continuously overcome the odds on this campaign and we can do it again. Come on you Wanderers. I love this club.

Oh, and Jerrad Tyson - take a bow, you absolute champion.

The Al Nasr and Ittihad fans were funny, good work taking your yellow flag and team colours to upset the Al Hilal fans !

As expected there were some absolute pole smokers in the RBB, standing there arms folded - congrats on being able to get tickets when you didn't deserve them...clowns,

The roving Capo was awesome, I didn't get your name but glad I had the chance to share my thoughts about the above posers & feel your pain in revving up passengers.

And that's why we wanted to play at Wanderland and not Homebush or SFS!

The RBB rocked and the fans in the stands provided fantastic support.

Great effort by the team with a much improved 2nd half!

Al-Hilal are a very good side and the job is only half done.  They'll be even better at home, so it'll be very tough for us to come out of this tie as the winners next weekend.

Al Hilal had their chance to score an away goal and they didn't. We have ninety minutes to score an away goal. They barely saw Saba and Juric nor the pillar of Spiranovic. For all their tens of thousands of fans only eleven will be on the pitch. There was enough bitterness between the players to guarantee the mongrel of the RBB will be in the heart of our players.

What a game! Great atmosphere, although that's despite the hardcores down the front of Bay 49, screaming at every one to stand up and then acting all pissy when people kept chanting while sitting down. I admire your passion champ, but I buy seats in the stands for a good reason. If I wanted to stand and shout all game and have big blokes screaming orders at me, I'd buy seats in the active bays. Just leave me to support and cheer in my own way FFS. I don't tell others to sit down, shut up and watch the game after all.

Ugh. This is a pet hate of mine, the "stand and chant for 90 minutes or you're just a bandwagon plastic flog" brigade.

What a ***** night!!!!! I am sore and have lost my voice a bit but don't care.

It was a similar game ti the Evergrande 1st leg in many ways and Al Hilal look a similar kind of team to GE. **** I wish that one went in off the post!

Next weekend is going to be ******** torture!!!! I feel we will need that away goal.... but any kind of draw will do now or a 2-1 defeat  :good:  Got to throw it all on the line one last time and we need a hero to step up like Covic with the penna save at GE.

Those Al Hilal fans spouting off about what we will face next week! In China against GE we took on the scum on and off the pitch and had everything thrown at us and still they couldn't get us  :xmad:

    great news for you kangaroos
AlWaleed bin Talal prince bought all the tickets for Alhilal and it will be free !!!

    You lost,

    Accept it.

Nailed it there, they are just like Evergrande on and off the pitch.

WSW are coming to Saudi to get you  :diablo:
