  • King Mitch Blasts Wanderers Into Top 6

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers overcame a bizarre refereering decision to take all three points in their away match in Newcastle tonight.

Newcastle opened the scoring through a blatantly offside goal that was initially ruled out, only for the referee to over-rule his linesman and give the Jets a 1-0 lead, a clear square up penalty to Western Sydney was won by Brendon Santalab then converted by Andreu, before Mitch Nichols' long range rocket gave the visitors a 2-1 lead they weren't going to give up.

The first half was a give and take affair, with neither side overly dominant, although it was clear the Wanderers had the better of the half, they were not able to take advantage to go ahead before the break. Mitch Nichols struck a long range effort that Mark Birighitti had to stretch at full arms length to turn behind, and moments before the half-time whistle Dario Vidosic brought down a chip on the edge of the 6 yard box before lashing a volley that was unfortunately aimed straight at Mark Birighitti.

Second half saw a resurgence in chances, with Newcastle taking the lead in the 73rd minute in extraordinary fashion. Andreu cut down Leonardo on the edge of the box, receiving a yellow card and giving away a free kick. Ki-Je Lee stepped up and curled the ball over the wall, it rebounded off the crossbar with Redmayne beaten, into the bath of Enver Alivodic, who ran off to celebrate, only for the linesman's flag to cut it short. Despite Alivodic being clearly offside, the officials conversed, and decided to overturn the decision. Another atrocious display of incompetence from A-League officials and gave the Jets the lead.

Despite the setback the Wanderers kept their heads up, and took control of the match in search of an equaliser. Hope came in the form of Brendon Santalab. With the ball high in the sky following a shanked clearance, Santalab positioned himself below the ball, Newcastle's #9 Milos Trifunovic combined a trip with a shove in the back and was rightly punished with a penalty awarded against him. With the Wanderers shady record from the spot, it was Andreu who sealed a magnificent match by sending Birighitti the wrong way to level the game.

Mitch Nichols was the man of the match and arguably the signing of the season for the Red & Black, he sealed his performance by sending the strong away support into raptures with the winner. 4 minutes from full time Scott Jamieson forced Jason Hoffman into an error, Romeo Castelen played it onto Bridge, who shifted to the blonde attacking midfielder. His first touch laid the ball in front, and his second was a dipping and swerving strike that fizzed under Birighitti and nestled into the back of the net.

The Wanderers held firm in the dying moments and took all three points back down the motorway to Parramatta. The win puts them back in the Premiership hunt and is a reward for the effort and quality football being played by the still reigning Asian Champions. With 55% possession and a 82% passing accuracy, not to mention for the first game in a long time, actually looking a threat from set pieces, it bodes well for the next game, against Melbourne City.

Santa needs to start from now on. FMD we were a different team with him on the field. Pio and Sotirio should be pushed back with Bridge, Castelen and Gol Gol coming back. That was a brilliant win :) .

Neville was pretty bad tonight with them crosses

Now to a Mooyless Heart next week for three! Though the final ball will have to improve immensely.

Phoenix at Wanderland the week after that. I sense a winning run brewing.

i already posted this but i am proud of it so i am going to re post :P

i dread crosses more than jesus christ does, at least with our team i do

despite the lucky penalty i feel we deserved the win

Doubt we would've got the penalty if they hadn't got their bs offside goal.

I just don't see any use for Pio. Not once have I witnessed him and thought wow, he'll be good for us. The best thing he does is cut off crosses into the box BUT... He's the number 9, he should be on the receiving end of them. He's either lagging behind when he should be up front or he's off side.

I don't know, some people who are better experts at the game than me like him but I just don't see it. Haven't even seen something to give me a glimmer of hope.

Anyway, what a great evening. Been a long time between b2b wins.

Our climb to the top started last week. It continued this week.

    Also,

I keep hearing the name as Leaky-G and the visuals that spring to mind each time I hear it are not pleasant.

So happy right now  :xbop:  :xbop:

Sure there are things to work on, but we played well in the 1st half and didn't give up in the second. We had so many chances, so much more positive than last season. We convert at least half of those chances and we're winning games regularly.

    Onwards lads!

******* love newie trips. The new chant is fantastic. Loved the acab one as well. The refereeing, or more precisely the standard of the refereeing is below acceptable. The league, and the game will not get better. Of the 3 goals tonight 2 shouldn't have stood. We still deserved the win of course and I am ecstatic about it!

My patience ran out when it comes to Pio. Start Santa over him or sub him sooner. He just doesnt offer enough to warrant the marquee status, and salary. Happy with the rest!

Oh, and awesome effort in tbb tonight!

Wow, was that not one of those games you wanna kill someone only to turn around and tell them you LOVE THEM A LOT!!!

I was sooooo frustrated. My emotions under no ****n control and just simply struggling all the way through...

I am glad we've made it finally. Well done team for another marvellous win.

Neville, please take a holiday and don't come back until year 2179. I approve it.

Italian fellow with a long surname, please go and get farked. You have no passion for this club and respect for the thousands who come to watch you. Wake the up mate.

Sotirio, what planet are you on?

Vidosic, the spanish boys, defence and a very solid performance.

Mitch I am your BIGGEST FAN, I am still waiting on your response to my letters. ;0)... Ohh ****, I haven't sent them yet.

Good win and bring on Melbourne Two.

For those who say Pio doesn't get the service, watch how when Santa came on how he gets away from his marker or runs into space or chases up little scraps. As much as I want the Italian to improve, he affects the fluidity of the team. Everything just stops when it gets to him.

Neville is a terrible crosser, but his all round game is getting better. Popa should have him practising crossing the ball after training every day next week. Sotirio should drop back to youth league. Redmayne still a little shaky...

Rest of the team you just cannot fault.
