  • King Mitch Blasts Wanderers Into Top 6

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers overcame a bizarre refereering decision to take all three points in their away match in Newcastle tonight.

Newcastle opened the scoring through a blatantly offside goal that was initially ruled out, only for the referee to over-rule his linesman and give the Jets a 1-0 lead, a clear square up penalty to Western Sydney was won by Brendon Santalab then converted by Andreu, before Mitch Nichols' long range rocket gave the visitors a 2-1 lead they weren't going to give up.

The first half was a give and take affair, with neither side overly dominant, although it was clear the Wanderers had the better of the half, they were not able to take advantage to go ahead before the break. Mitch Nichols struck a long range effort that Mark Birighitti had to stretch at full arms length to turn behind, and moments before the half-time whistle Dario Vidosic brought down a chip on the edge of the 6 yard box before lashing a volley that was unfortunately aimed straight at Mark Birighitti.

Second half saw a resurgence in chances, with Newcastle taking the lead in the 73rd minute in extraordinary fashion. Andreu cut down Leonardo on the edge of the box, receiving a yellow card and giving away a free kick. Ki-Je Lee stepped up and curled the ball over the wall, it rebounded off the crossbar with Redmayne beaten, into the bath of Enver Alivodic, who ran off to celebrate, only for the linesman's flag to cut it short. Despite Alivodic being clearly offside, the officials conversed, and decided to overturn the decision. Another atrocious display of incompetence from A-League officials and gave the Jets the lead.

Despite the setback the Wanderers kept their heads up, and took control of the match in search of an equaliser. Hope came in the form of Brendon Santalab. With the ball high in the sky following a shanked clearance, Santalab positioned himself below the ball, Newcastle's #9 Milos Trifunovic combined a trip with a shove in the back and was rightly punished with a penalty awarded against him. With the Wanderers shady record from the spot, it was Andreu who sealed a magnificent match by sending Birighitti the wrong way to level the game.

Mitch Nichols was the man of the match and arguably the signing of the season for the Red & Black, he sealed his performance by sending the strong away support into raptures with the winner. 4 minutes from full time Scott Jamieson forced Jason Hoffman into an error, Romeo Castelen played it onto Bridge, who shifted to the blonde attacking midfielder. His first touch laid the ball in front, and his second was a dipping and swerving strike that fizzed under Birighitti and nestled into the back of the net.

The Wanderers held firm in the dying moments and took all three points back down the motorway to Parramatta. The win puts them back in the Premiership hunt and is a reward for the effort and quality football being played by the still reigning Asian Champions. With 55% possession and a 82% passing accuracy, not to mention for the first game in a long time, actually looking a threat from set pieces, it bodes well for the next game, against Melbourne City.

November 08, 2015: Mobile phone footage has captured a scuffle between Western Sydney Wanderers fans and security at last night’s A-League match in Newcastle.

    FTBA

Security guards have clashed with fans during the Western Sydney Wanderers win in Newcastle yesterday.

Mobile phone footage showed a man being refused access to an area designated for Wanderers fans at Hunter Stadium, before tensions quickly escalated.

In the footage obtained by 9NEWS, a security officer appeared to throw the first punch at the fan, prompting a second man to jump in and drag the guard to the ground.

A larger group of supporters joined the fray, with the fan initially involved restrained by two security guards before being led away.

    Police are investigating the incident.

Do you know more? Email contact@9news.com.au

The Wanderers prevailed over the jets 2-1, courtesy of a late winner by forward Mitch Nicholls.

The match was riddled with controversy, with Newcastle’s first goal coming after scorer Envir Alovodic appeared to be offside in the build-up.

The Wanderers then levelled with a dubious penalty, awarded following an apparent Brenton Santalab dive.

Nein news got the report wrong..

I reckon people should ignore this stuff. Don't even post it on here. It's just obvious targeting and discrimination of Wanderers supporters and people from Western Sydney. Just don't watch nine news. I don't.
If people could have a bit of self control then this wouldn't happen. I don't care if someone videos WSW fans curing the deaf and blind, keep it to yourself unless it's needed to be shared. There's some people who capture a video and cannot wait to get on social media and post it everywhere they possibly can and then wonder why it ends up in the hands of the media. I'm not saying this as in we should cover up incidents, if they happen, they happen, you can't dispute that but we know that regardless of whether WSW fans are at all fault or not, the media will twist the tale. That video I noticed got posted to one of the biggest public WSW groups on Facebook last night and sure enough I wake up this morning and look where it is... You've gotta be smart about all of this.

Thankfully the claimed police investigation will reveal the truth that it's Newcastle fans from what I've heard but it's too late by then, the media will have had their fun with it.

I agree Hughesy with this but it's always going to get out there. There are people from both sides watching our games. The amount of NRL Knights jerseys I saw last night was ridiculously embarrassing. After a gutful of piss these blokes want to try and make a name for themselves and enter "OUR" Bay .Its' not the first time either, remember VIctory round1 last year?

The perpetrators were AFL fans who couldn't five 3 fux if they are banned from never coming again, just as I'm sure these 2 dumbkunts last night probably couldn't give a toss either.

The peopblem I have is where is the accountability here, where is the backing from the club? HAL? FFA?

This is where they should be suing the **** out of these pathetic C U N T S.

Number of total shot attempts v Newcastle

    Nichols 3

    Sotirio 2

    Vidosic 2

    Bridge 1

    Santalab 1

    Piovaccari 0

That says it all. Not to mention, Piovaccari leads the offsides count in the league. 13 total now. Most of those were naive.

I'm tired of seeing him raise his arms in the air blaming others. His attacking movement has been sub par. His fitness sub par. Why is it that others can fashion chances and he can't? Santalab looks more likely to get a shot on goal in 5 minutes than Pio does in 45.

For those that keep pointing out the one fine cross or two other examples of holding the ball up - he is a professional footballer. Even Sotirio with his usual poor lack of composure is providing better ball retention.

I won't be disappointed if we get rid of him in January.

Serious questions now being asked about Pio. Santa did more than him in his cameo.

Is it a simple reason that Pio is just unfit?

Guy has no service or support, hes isolated upfront by himself, how's he suppose to get the balls he needs and players playing off him?

Ive got faith in him to deliver but that performance yesterday was Saba-like.

He had 3 perfectly good chances to stay onside and attack on the break. All of which he blew.

Other players in this team are fashioning chances but Pio can only manage 2 shot attempts (all attempts) in the last 3 games.

That's garbage from a player on $750k. You could have so many A international players with European continental experience on $250k or less so the criticisms are perfectly justified in my view.

Against Brisbane he had 5 shot attempts. Adelaide 2. Sydney 1. Perth 1. Newcastle 0. Obviously there is more to the game than just stats but whichever way you look at it, this is evidence that his attacking movement has been substandard. It's so obvious when Santalab comes on and gets into scoring positions.

I'll agree with Mr Bayern that when at full potential I see Castelen as our best player.

But he hasn't produced a full 90 mins let along week in week out. Until he does that he can't lay claim to the throne.

Now that Santa and Bridge are back and with Gol Gol around the corner what is apparent is that we go seriously deep in the front 4. We can keep the intensity up for 90 mins. Ultimately we won the game because we were able to play at a higher tempo for longer than the Jets. Teams are going to struggle with our ability to each week bring 3 players on in the front 4 who are just as good as the 3 coming off. The fact Sorotio has 5 games under his belt now is great for the experience. Ultimately i think next week he drops back to bench for Castelen or Bridge.

To come from behind away from home at the venue we held up the Premiers Plate S1-epic. Our new chant and acab response to this week's hearings and media-epic. Jamieson is a mongrel with westie DNA in his veins. Remember Bulut. The Newcastle fans yelling Go back to your Mosques as we were leaving. Lucky for you we were too happy with the three points to reply. Alcohol obviously blinded them to the consequences of who they were taunting. There is no filming inside the RBB even on away games so don't be offended when it's enforced. The number of kids under 10 singing RBB chants reinforces for me that no matter how many bans and media witch hunts they unleash the ranks will be replenished and no one that matters is listening to the vile.

Let Piovaccari have the chances that Santalab had yesterday and he gets two goals - guaranteed.

Put Bridge on the left, Nichols behind and Castelen on the right - or maybe switch any one of them with Vidosic, and I am confident that Piovaccari will get the service he needs to start netting goals.

Dino didn't score until Round 12 in the A-League.

Marc Janko didn't score until Round 3, and we all remember that was a massive fluke goal. He then scored twice in Round 7, and then the next one was in Round 10. So after a third of the season he was on 4 goals. He won the golden boot.

Don't get me wrong, I think Castelen is good attacking player. He runs with intent, and has deadly footwork. (His defensive efforts are to be worked on however)

I've never rated him as ever having a man of the match performance. On an objective basis his efforts have been no more effective (this season) then those around him.

Castelen just makes it look really fancy while he does it.

If only Fred had the number of chances Sotirio manages to butcher every game, surely that's enough for both of them...fathead & Santa to start

    Link to comment

Sotirio gets in those positions because he runs. His work rate and team ethic more than make up for his poor final ball imo. No way we dominate the possession stats yesterday without him .

Castelen is probably our most technically gifted player but not our best imo for the reasons Micki described.

Our player of the season so far is Nichols by a mile.

Give Santalab some credt. Piovaccari hasn't been getting into the positions Santalab does on a consistent basis. Most of the time Pio is not even on his toes in the box.

I'm happy for Pio to prove everyone wrong but if he is going to bring the careless attitude and lack of sharpness we saw yesterday to the field, he'll be lucky to bag another brace of chances let alone goals. He did virtually nothing Santalab or Gol Gol couldn't do.

Shame that it didn't work out but... oh well

    ---

I don't watch Serie B and La Liga, but I'm going to assume that for someone who played La Liga last season, he's getting used to the style of play and how we go about things here - just like Janko last season for ESFC. He was on 4 after ten rounds and then bagged another 12 or so in the other part of the season

Santalab got into great positions, yes - but he's been here for two or three years now - he knows the system and the players a lot more than Pio who probably didn't even know who we were six months ago.

Piovaccari has to be quality, and I'm sure he'll deliver soon. 100% confident that he will. Eventually.

Castelen made a very positive impact yesterday. When he doesn't overplay with the ball, he's arguably the most potent attacking threat we possess.

By contrast, Nichols who is not quite as technically adept as Romeo, is pleasing to watch even when he coughs up the ball. The work rate, determination, energy and teamwork he possesses is very imprtant to the structure of the team. It is more important to have these kinds of players build a team with 1 or 2 Romeo types sprinkled in.

To be fair i think everyone, with the exception of the guys at ATB, know Castas worth to the team. Just need more full 90mins from him and an injury free fun. Big ask. Edited by WSWBoro

"Best player" as in "best football player". He is not our most effective or most important player - "yet", I hope. His team mates are slow coaches in comparison, which is part of the problem. His at times Appiah-ish decision making are another part.

Without his injury setbacks we wouldn't have this conversation in the first place. Mind you, had he stayed injury free he would never have come to Australia, but cracked the BL instead.

Piovaccari is our weak point at the moment, whilst Neville or Sotirio squander opportunities, they threaten and pressured defenders. No CB has really been troubled by Piovaccari, he is probably a footnote in opposition's defensive plans.

For me, his issue is mental, he can't figure it out. And now he is frustrated and feeling more pressure. Popa will be critical in managing this and preventing it blowing out to a disaster.

It might involve rethinking how he is involved, and resetting all of our expectations. Turning on him, especially when we are winning is not what's needed here. If we pride ourself on influencing the club and the character of play, we need to stay solid and let Popa figure it out.

I loved seeing kids on the hill in newcastle jerseys clapping in tune to the rbb..

There were also a group of about 30 young kids getting ready for the roo ball half-time entertainment also doing the We unite as one, jump in the air... It was awesome to see a and they were loving it but not so good after half-time was done, Shazza and Dazza in Knights jerseys took their kids off home..

Poor Kids have got no chance and will have to get used to a life of Hadley heaven once their parents prevent them from following their dreams.... :nono:

Problem is that Pio lacks pace (even old school central defenders are quicker than him) and lacks height. Therefore that leaves "skill" as a necessary attribute for him to have to have to contribute something. From the few times I saw him with the ball he really doesn't seem to have any ideas. Something tells me he is a poacher, but just seems to be a pace too slow in this league.

My feeling is that Popa will eventually let him go. We saw last season what happens to players who don't perform up to standard and don't look motivated. If your marquee striker isn't scoring or even contributing to goals, then that is a problem. Dino's style of play at least contributed to the team winning. But even he was gone after one season.
