  • King Mitch Rocket Lifts Wanderers To Top

    mack

One of the best goals in the history of the Wanderers from Mitch Nichols has put the club on top of the A-League after an outstanding 2-1 win over the Brisbane Roar in Parramatta tonight.

A match that lived up to the billing where the winner would go top of the league, the Wanderers came out and dominated the first half. Mark Bridge opened the scoring in the 29th minute after taking advantage of some wonderful lead up play from Andreu. The Spanish midfielder wriggled clear of several defenders before launching an attack through Romeo Castelen. Castelen jinked and weaved through the Roar defence, his cutback for Vidosic took a deflection that put the ball into the path of Bridge who couldn't miss from a few meters out.

Jamie Maclaren equalised luckily for the Roar 5 minutes later. Alberto was shoved by his opponent, being put off balance and not being able to collect the ball cleanly, Broich put a ball through to a potentially offside Maclaren, and despite Topor-Stanley getting back in cover, his shot took a fluke deflection off Topor-Stanley's toe that put the ball over Andrew Redmayne.

With the Wanderers standing solid in defence while the Roar took advantage of some biased officiating to maintain loads of pressure on the home side, Mitch Nichols produced a moment of magic to break the deadlock. Nichols took a short pass from Jamieson, rode one challenge to create room, then launched a dipping, curling strike from well outside the edge of the box that gave Jamie Young no chance at all.

The win put the Wanderers clear on top of the A-League, with a chance to go even further clear if they can beat Melbourne Victory in what should be a blockbuster match next week in Parramatta.

Anyone else impressed with Neville lately? He seems to be getting better though he still can't cross for ****.

Exactly this. He is getting better each week, has great energy gets into great positions. But his crossing lets him down, and his passing isn't good either. But I still like him.

Alberto seems to get frustrated with his positioning too

Aloisi fast becoming the next Arnie.. having a whinge saying they shouldve had 2 penalties blah blah.

    Whinges every ******* week.

Oh and Popa said Mitch had a bad game... so expect a good game next week.

The referee let them get away with a lot. Lots of little fouls to break up play

Two penalties? What was the second one?

In regards to the consistency of the referee. Stefanutto should feel hard done for getting a yellow for his hand ball. But the guys haircut is that bad I don't particularly care.

Look there was a genuine call for one penalty. I've seen referees give them, because the arm was used in control of the ball.

But I've also seen it given the other way. Neville's arm was tucked in so I think it's neither correct/incorrect to play on. We're lucky.

But the referee let Cavano (Nicholas Cage) run a butchers business in the midfield so I'm not exactly sighing with relief either.

Roar were absolutely faultless aloisi is a whinging bitch I'm so glade we beat a inform team

I'd take clut and Brendon and Jamie mc in my squad in a heart beat

Clit (lel) is from Western Sydney anyway.

Burst onto the scene mid last season but nothing since.

clut is a ******* awesome player I don't know why brissie play corona or broich instead of him

Brisbane throw everything at us even brought that slippery fish guy as a starter

But what i noticed is everyone's really reluctant to give the ball to neville

    that's cause he's technically challenged

First of all without the RBB it really didn't feel the same to state the obvious For the record the maximum count in the RBB was 13 people all night. Tremendous effort to get buy in from 99% of people - the ones there were completely non active except the young kid swinging his shirt... haha what a little champion.

The game itself, we weren't convincing but once again just don't look like losing. Confidence is oozing now. Some sound performances again the front 4 were a little off but worked hard go lucky for first goal and 2nd was absolute class. Best individual strike we have seen at Wanderland for a long time - probably since Ibini's strike perhaps?

Mclarren really gives us trouble though, Popa needs to figure him out if we play finals against them. I said in pre game the thread of him in behind needed to be stopped and maybe cursed us as that's how he scored.

Outside of Mitch highlight for many in the crowd who may have caught it was GunnerWanderer supervising the kick tennis game for Gunner Jnr. Chased a ball on the surface with my poor shoe choice and landed on my arse. Highlight of my footballing career invisible slide tackle an Wanderland  :woah:

Credit to the post corner crew in Bay 60 for giving me some lip too

Next week is massive please Gallop you **** allow the stadium to be packed. It's going to be a hell of a game

Took an absolute cracker from Mitch to win the game, don't think we had any other real "shots"  on goal most of second half. They definitely shut down our midfield with high press tactics second half.  I  have  heart palpitations  every time Redders gets ball and  throws out. IMO other than the assist (via a deflection) for the first goal thought Castelan poor to be honest  too many touches, losing ball easily,  he is starting to give me heart palpitations too.....

Good to see the results  going our way,  can see the confidence and self belief in the team ,  sign of a good team is  the ability to grind out  wins.  Honestly  though think we were lucky to get a win last night  took the moment of  brilliance to do it . Sure hope boycott over for next week ,really hope negotiations with the FFA and supporters groups this week achieve at least a way forward .

I like Neville too. He is the typical Australian footballer though - good athlete, physical, fast, fit strong work ethic, tough but technique lets him down pretty often.

Love those overlapping runs him and jamo make - one of our most important improvements over last year's team.

Don't think it's been answered yet - what was the whistle for near the end when Row-Mayo had open pasture between him and the goal?

I watched it on tape last night and there's a possibility of a minor shove by Santa on his marker as the ball was played to Romeo. I'll have to watch it again but there's no guarantee that Romeo would have scored anyway !!

Neville has improved enormously and also hasn't had a yellow since that early rash. Still some positioning issues but with work I can see further improvement. Jammo had an 'off' game last night IMO but still always a threat.

Strange game I thought. Not our best game, but it would have been tough to take a loss I think. Mitch's yellow in the 3rd min was a joke and if KGJ was consistent, both teams probably could have finished with 9 players. Dimas gets hacked how many times and nothing? Stefanuttos yellow was hash, but he should consider himself lucky to have stayed on the field. He gave KGJ plenty of opportunity to give him a second yellow.

Taking 3 points when you're not at your best, certainly won't complain with that. Onward and up upward.

Could have easily been given but they were also lucky to end the game with 11 players with stefanuto kicking the ball away after already having a yellow.

Stefanuto should be sent off every time he walks out onto the pitch with a head a peeled onion would be proud of.  :smurfpoint:

Boycotting grubs: a view from the Bavarian Beer Cafe

    • Arrived around 6:30pm. Red and Black left right and centre.
    • Watched the game in the rear bar with a few trusted friends and the new face NSWanderer15.
    • At half time we literally were the only ones in WSW jerseys left in a packed BBC.
    • We had 14k plus against Roar on a Thursday and against the crowd magnets from Perth and Wellington. We had sub 10k in a top of the table game on a Saturday night. There were 5-7k boycotting. That's quite a statement.
    • I am counting seven seccos to ensure the safety of a lone guy in a wheelchair. https://twitter.com/TheWorldGame/status/673058946303713281/photo/1
    • The meals arrived just as Nichols scored. The waitress looked at us puzzled, and said "Aren't you supposed to be at the game"? EmMac told her that we are boycotting, and that it's complicated. She didn't tell her that it's also gut wrenching.
    • If we felt unlucky to lose the derby we can consider ourselves lucky to win this one. The Roar was excellent, their pressing very effective. Very impressive.
    • But the Roar had no chance, as I was wearing my pair of lucky trousers. Another win. Top of the table.
    • Castelen needs a goal. Desperately.
    • Walked through Parramatta post match. Was great to see the place pumping and in red and black.
    • I expect to boycott again next week. It'll suck, but I'll do it. The meeting of the active group reps is on Wednesday, and I doubt anything meaningful can be sorted by next weekend. We all live in hope, but I am not coming down the barricades as yet.

Yeah looked like Santa was holding back one of their cb's (Bowles I think) while the ball was going over. Dumb foul as he was never going to stop the pass and Romeo could have done some damage with so much open space to run into.

I think we are starting to play some of the best and most pleasing football of our existence.

Plenty of movement off the ball, turning, switching of direction, overlapping and, generally, speed. Castelen still has quite a way to go to reach the pace and dynamism he showed in the Derby (before his injury) and I still feel we could play the ball back a little less, but it is hard to be too picky when your team is playing some lovely football and is on top of the table.

I do have concerns about Pio. There have been far too many moments when his control and touch have been less than average - even for a park footballer! I just hope that he can justify our investment, but with Santa, Bridgey, Sotirio, and even a struggling Vidosic out there (and a wonderful Mitch in support role) and Golgol near fit, we may not need Pio's strength and ball-shielding ability.

Alberto has added significantly to our aerial prowess - remember how we were often vulnerable defensively facing free-kicks and corners, and virtually unable to score when we had one of our own! There has been significant improvement from last season - viva la revolution!

My pork knuckle was well and truly done and dusted by the time St Butters of the Soaring Curler scored...should've gone in harder and faster digger.

One thought re the tactical/stylistic game; we still have some definite issues with both crosses and dead ball situations. I just don't see the quality needed when Neville particularly whips in the box cross, and Dimas, St Butters, Jamo are not exactly setting the world on fire when it comes to frees, corners etc. That needs to be sorted to take us to another level.

The Brizvegas goal was soft...Topor didn't handle the challenge well enough and Redders messed up. However on balance defensively we have a bloody tight unit.

    • McClaren always looks dangerous. I wanted to sign him in the off season but we were chasing Pio obviously. We could have saved some money and had a better, younger Aussie player I reckon. Hope Fed proves me wrong but....

    • Brisbane were very good and should have had a penalty. A wonder goal won it for us let's be honest. A draw would have been fair but then we got nothing from the derby so.. swings and roundabouts.

    • In a way it's a good job the ref blew towards the end when Romeo was away. Let's face it the finishing form Casta is in, he would have blazed it into the empty RBB and his confidence would have taken another knock.

    • Chance to put down a massive marker next week and go well clear. Just hope I am there!

    • Anyone have any idea if the RBB plan to boycott next week or when it will be decided/announced?
