  • Last Minute Loss Leaves WSW On Brink

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers defence of the Asian Champions League rests on a knife edge after a late goal from Kashima Antlers saw the J-League side win 2-1.

With FC Seoul & Guangzhou Evergrande playing out a 0-0 draw in the other Group H match, the Wanderers must defeat Guangzhou in China and hope for a draw in the Kashima vs Seoul match played at the same time.

In dreadful conditions following days of torrential rain, just over 5000 supporters showed up for the clash, including a reasonable contingent of away support for Kashima. Nikita Rukavytsya opened the scoring for the reigning champions, taking advantage of a defensive mistake from the central defence of Kashima to pounce on the loose ball and fire it past the keeper.

The second half was yet another capitulation that has become so typical of the Wanderers this season, and it started with another of the semi-regular Ante Covic mistakes of judgement that have plagued the veteran gloveman in the second half of this season. Covic hesitated instead of coming out strongly to collect a Kashima through ball, stopping halfway to the ball and allowing Shoma Doi kill the ball, stop, turn back on the ball and place it past the stranded keeper.

Kashima had the run of the game from that moment, the home side barely managing a shot on target. That failure to control the game saw one point into zero in the 90th minute, the left side combination for Kashima breaking down that flank and delivering a pinpoint cross along the ground to the near post, where Kanazaki took advantage of stop-start tracking from Matthew Spiranovic to slide the ball past Covic at the near post.

The Wanderers can still qualify for the knock-out round, but they must defeat Guangzhou Evergrande and hope the result goes their way between Seoul & Kashima.

The Wanderers next game is against Perth at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday the 25th of April.

Even if it's away at Newy or CCM it's just like a suburban home game for us anyway..!

Saw the "highlights" on TV this morning. We've used up all our luck when we won the ACL. Last year we would not have conceded these two goals.

I can't help but think that we have players but not a team. No doubt many are aware that their time at the WSW is about to come to an end. We had a major refresh a year ago, and a mini refresh in January. This time we might be witnessing a reboot, so hold on to your hats. I doubt that many of the established players will still be around once the dust has settled.

It's still raining. I feel like going back to bed.

On the Tomi issue: yes, he's been poor but. also, the only passes he seems to get are long balls from the defenders that he's expected to win and control. Defenders are almost always going to win out in that situation. Just cos Tomi's tall doesn't mean you only have to give him long balls ffs. Although that always points to the problems that our midfield has. We are incapable of passing the ball around in the opponent's half. You can't win a game when the only things your midfielder's do is pass backwards. Tagahagi's wasted at DM, most of the time when he gets the ball, the only thing he can do is pass backwards and he's too far away from the attack when we do actually get a good break.

alexander, im not blaming individual players, Im blaming popa's poor selection. he played cole and baccus who have not played since xmas.  popa had a better selection of players to firstly put on the bench and second to put on the park.  you can't tell me that trif, kalmar, perkatis, haliti, fofonah  were better match fit and available than those two players.  popa is struggling or perhaps it his coaches that are advising

Takahagi is passing backwards because the guys up front don't give him many options. When he does pass to the guys like Bulut, Juric, Ruka, Cole, Castelen, Baccus etc they just end up losing it within seconds. Bridge is a bit better as he has a bit more skill and control, and is able to combine better with decent players around him. But even he fades away in the second half. Juric's role in our team is to have his back to goal and find other players around him (the way Dino did with Shinji, Hersi and Bridge). If he has two players on him, that means there is space somewhere for someone else. Why aren't we taking advantage of this?

    Agreed as well.

Was always going to be difficult with no pre-season, and a lot of our players joining (and leaving) us throughout the season!!

They scored one goal and sat back and relaxed and became too casual. Disgusting ffotball from Yuric all he did was fall, push players and offsides. He was too lazy to drop back a meters to stay onside and giving silly fouls at the other end. The defence was shocking giving away too many hospital passes. Cole coming on was a big joke after lengthy time off there was no need for him. Spira should have been marking players instead of grass at the end.

Kashima Antlers fans know what active support is about, they're the first ever opposition fans to bring active support to Pirtek, especially while being a goal down.

    Take a bow.

Pretty sure Kawasaki brought a bunch too when we played them last campaign.

what i find disturbing from their first goal is the way we cleared the ball and our positioning at the back while trying to push out.

we had 6 v 2 as the ball was being cleared and the Kashima player put a ball out to their right wing. How we did not defend this is beyond me.

That right winger was free the whole time, and always had acres of space and time. That's why they kept going there (until they eventually scored). We play a compressed defence which means opposition wingers always have a ball against us. Tanaka should have been instructed to stay right on his bootlaces and not give him any time or space.

Our boys didn't show up in the second half. Simple as that.

Popa fielded a strong team to start the game which meant he really wanted this.

Once again, our defence failed. Tanaka and Gallaway were out run and out muscled in wide areas and they were always going to score from a cut back in to the box.

All this whinging of Popa annoys me.

He's rotated our squad for 3 seasons now, but no one whinged during the first 2, because we were winning.

I agree with much of what you said, I think after the season we have had and the player choices that have been made, there are some legitimate questions to be asked..Dont need to whinge if we are winning, sort of the point..But we have been disgraceful as a team this year..And thats ok to admit, sure there have been some good moments, but really..

Well... Dino won tons of headers and that worked two years ago :P

Takahagi drops back quite deep - to the level of the defence - to pick up the ball, but the problem is that players like Bridge push up to the level of the opposition defence so you have Bridge and Juric looking for that ball in behind. Bridge needs to drop back a bit more so he's another option for that quick flick on.

really Popa your team selection and substitution were f'd. Bulut is the only one who even looks like scoring. Tomi is lacking something. what's with the subs of cole and baccus. they haven't played football since xmas.  leave lorocco on or use trifiro and at least Perkatis on the bench. Baccus f'd up. gave the free kick away with a yellow and then couldnt defend the cross.  Popa get your head out and select players on their merits not reputation. the worst game ever ever

Bulut has an eye for goal, but I hate the number of times he's caught offside, or ball watching. He seems to have the positional sense of that kid from U10s who scores all the goals if he sharks a pass but has no clue about where he should be most of the time. He even ran Castelen off the ball last night when he should have cut in to open space in front of the goal.

I still think we need his ability to finish, but gee he's frustrating.

His hair implants must be plugged too deep and in to his brain these days!

    Sadly, he wasn't wrong.

5221 people braved last nights weather...

Thats awesome for a team thats done so poorly this year and considering the game is at an additional cost not covered in your membership package..

Sharks V Rabbits the night before had 3972 (allegedly), only saw 2 guys in scuba gear, the stadium looked empty..

Another statement that football deserves a larger slice of the pie, and deserves due respect

The Frontale fans were great too, making noise is one thing but these Kashima guys took it to another level despite their low numbers.

This is we're you have to ask the question why Popa played a near full strength team on Friday and expect the same line up to have the legs on Tuesday. Feel for baccus and cole being thrown into this game instead of returning on Friday.

Popa will learn alot from this season and the perth game can't come quick enough then the player cuts can begin.

I barely had a voice last night and still was louder than most in 56.

4 wins in 27 rounds is a piss poor season result and the club needs to be shown that it is unacceptable.

I have always said I will support regardless, but frustrations need to be clearly shown.
