  • Lightning Strikes Thrice

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers finally have their first win at Parramatta Stadium this A-League season with a come from behind 3-2 victory against a 10 man Melbourne City.

A massive storm hit Sydney prior to the game, drenching the stadium and bracketing the Parramatta area with constant lightning and thunder. The game was delayed by an hour until the storm cleared. A surprise inclusion in the Wanderers squad was the debut of central defender Jonathan Aspropotamitis as a result of the heavy schedule and injuries to several players.

City were unlucky not to open the score after a bakers dozen of minutes, an wide Aaron Mooy free kick found Patrick Kisnorbo but somehow his touch sliced onto the underside of the crossbar. City did get themselves in front eventually on the half-hour. Mooy received a second chance after a cleared corner and he stood up Labinot Haliti to deliver a teasing cross to the back post that found Kisnorbo, who had his header cleared off the line by Yojiro Takahagi, only to see Safuwan Baharudin react faster than Mateo Poljak to pounce on the rebound to fire it past Dean Bouzanis from point blank range.

Despite going behind the Wanderers arguably had the better of the play, without much result in terms of shots. Eventually the pressure told, Tomi Juric combined with Haliti to cross into the middle, Juric getting onto the end of the teasing effort, having his first time shot blocked by Connor Chapman, this time around Poljak was able to react and his sidefoot shot was perfectly placed and the Wanderers were level at the break.

Both sides went looking for another goal to take the lead, and Tomi Juric should have put his side in front. Nikita Rukavytsya was hammered in a tackle but still managed to release Takahagi, an intelligent run from Juric saw him get in behind the City defence. With the crowd expecting him to bulge the back of the net he was denied by a superb reflex save from City keeper Tando Velaphi.

The game swung again a minute after the Juric miss. Substitute Jason Trifiro gave away a foul nearly on half-way and deep on the left flank, Mooy launched his cross into the penalty are and it evaded everyone including Dean Bouzanis to nestle into the far corner.

While the Wanderers could have been forgiven if they went into their shell with heads dropped, the Mooy goal saw gave the Wanderers players double their effort to get something out of the game. And get something they did. Connor Chapman turned the game on it's head with two baffling brain explosions. The first was giving away a clear penalty on Tomi Juric, after he got nutmegged by Juric, Chapman dragged his arm across the striker and shoved him to ground, spotted by Strebre Delovski. Juric having won the penalty took it as well, burying a powerful strike past the dive of Velaphi.

Chapman's second brain explosion gave the Wanderers a one man advantage. After Takahagi dispossessed the defender with a sliding challenge that left Chapman incensed. As Delovski waved play on Chapman confronted & manhandled the referee, earning him an instant straight red card.

Western Sydney poured forward to take advantage of their greater number, and it was Rukavytsya who should have put the home team in front 5 minutes before regulation time expired. Takahagi was cut down outside the area, Juric stood over the ball, City's marking fell to pieces leaving Rukavytsya in open space. He was spotted by Juric who calmly slotted the ball behind the City defensive wall, Rukavytsya's first touch wasn't optimal and his shot was smothered by the onrushing Velaphi.

In the end the flying winger had the last laugh. 2 minutes into injury time Tanaka's cross could only be flicked on by Kisnorbo, and it fell to the benefit of Rukavytsya, who fired a side volley back across goal, giving Velaphi no chance to repeat his heroics and giving the Wanderers their first win at Parramatta Stadium in the A-League this season.

The win lifts the club off the bottom of the A-League ladder as a result of their superior goal difference over Newcastle, and keeping just the faintest glimmer of hope that should Brisbane, City & the Mariners all collapse in a heap, the Wanderers could finish 6th by winning most if not all of their remaining matches.

The Wanderers next match is against Melbourne Victory at Parramatta Stadium on Friday the 13th of March.

Didn't think I could make the game tonight cause I had uni. Started getting bored so I pulled my phone out and saw that the game had been delayed to 8:30. Snuck out of class, walked into bay 57 just after mateo scored and the rest is history! Best decision of my life. COYW!!!

Football will teach everything you need to know son, yes football.

I can't like this post enough

Up until last night everyone though ruka's right foot was only good to balance him

And then he scores a volley - U will never learn that **** in Uni

Very happy, in fact ***** super happy.Only down side was when Trif was subbed, I believe wrong call, a forward should have been subbed, felt a little embarassed as Trif had a decent game, my mates said that Popa didn't acknowledge him and Trif went straight into the tunnel, can anyone advise what happened?

Trifiro was ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. I thought the substitution was to waste some time at the end of the game. I could be wrong. I was watching Trifiro get beaten for speed by Mooy and everyone knows how slow Mooy is. He was second to every ball, getting outmuscled as well. If I was Popa I would have subbed him off earlier. Dont worry he wasnt the only one. Golec should have been hooked from the game as well. Dire performances from both.

No longer content with simply passing the ball directly to opponents in advantage positions, Golec has added a new string to his bow by standing around for an interminable time not knowing where to play the throw-in, and then throwing directly to an opponent who had nobody near him. You can't teach this stuff - you have to be born with it.

Winning with him in the side is a mountainous achievement.

    Tops:

    • It was a victory for the true believers.
    • Overall a good performance after yet another squad reshuffle. How many players have worn red and black for us in this A-League season? Must be around the 35 mark by know.
    • Juric's and Haliti's best performances for quite some time. They played with purpose and determination. I hope Juric will be able to do that over 90 minutes, and score goals in the process. Converting penalties is not enough.
    • Young Jonathan A. Not a bad début. Not bad at all. But: Alessi seems to have disappeared from Popa's radar.
    • Sotirio. Great display, looks very promising.
    • Good atmosphere against the odds.
    • Very happy for Ruka scoring with his non-existent right foot (and missing the 4:2 with his well endowed left foot - oh well).
    • Takahagi and Tanaka are soooo much better than Saba and Adeleke. Especially Tanaka: had he been around for all of the season our performances and results would have been different.

    Flops:

    • Bouzanis. Without wanting to be overly critical: "saved" a ball against the cross bar (dear oh dear), and was a spectator when Mooy's free kick made it into the net. But then again, we've seen similar things from Ante.
    • Golec. He tries, but...
    • Poljac and Golec limping past the RBB with ice packs strapped to calf and ankle. As if we don't enough enough injuries already.
    • Mooy. His goal celebrations show that he was well and truly departed the west of Sydney in more than one way.

The flag war in Bay 54:

    • Those involved in the Bay 54 flag war: you may want to try chill pills. Your team is fighting for victory and you are missing it because you are busy rallying around a flag? You are having a go at three fellow WSW supporters without knowing what actually went down? And then quite a few of you walk out and aren't there to celebrate with the team? I am not quite sure who or what you thought you were supporting in those moments, but it didn't look like you were supporting the team. But I give you good marks for entertainment value. It has been a tough season, and we all can do with a bit of comic relief.

I wouldn't be commenting on things you clearly have no idea about. It makes you sound like an absolute twat.

I haven't been on here in almost a year - a mate scrolling though screenshotted this to me purely on how idiotic that last part of your post was.

Our passing accuracy before Chapmans red card was 51%. You would see better passing at an All Age Div 3 game. Part of that stat is how often the back 4 simply belt it up the park. And part is how many times we have a throw in, with no one to throw to. I can't believe at this level a throw in should go directly to the opposition.

Possession was as low as 33% at times in the first half. That's disgraceful for a home team. But at least a win puts a band-aid over the terrible performance last night that it was for the first 80 mins. They dug in after the red card.

Subbing off a defensive midfielder in the 92nd min while holding onto a 1 goal lead for dear life was unimaginable.

it well known you miss the action when your in the active it is the sacrifice you make to help create atmosphere anyone who does not like it can be a fellow wanderer in another terrace. If anyone sees incidences like this just try and take a minute to observe some of the facts so those in the right can be backed up instead of left up to an agitating security.

Well well. My sincere apologies for offering an opinion other than yours, or that of your mate. So someone was "right" there yesterday, and someone was "wrong". I see.

The significance of the flag was not obvious to everyone which probably had a lot to do with the escalation. Nevertheless, the whole affair could or should have been dealt with far more respectfully by those involved. If the intention was to make a statement of remembrance for a fellow WSW supporter, then a dog's breakfast was made of it by all participants.

Trifiro has one of, if not the best touches and skill sets in the whole club.

I don't regret letting Mooy go. I don't hate the bloke but he wasn't worth the money he was asking for this time last year. I've never understood why it's such a touchy topic for so many.

I agree with you, but that's not the point.

The whole thing wasn't as black and white as you seem to describe it. There was no right or wrong, far from it. I repeat: it was very poorly handled by everyone involved, flag handler(s) included.

    Link to comment

Did not see it and have asked for the facts. I find it hard to see how the flag handler could be in the wrong given how many times this issue comes up it frustrating to see this happen.

and so it was that the term flag handler was coined.

True believers!Don't hate me mick, we were upstairs :)

I know I was told! To be fair if you hadn't packed a poncho I completely understand.

I tried to get your attention, I saw you after the match! (Will have to ask over that Tyson goalkeeper jersey) Was caught up between a sore throat and needing to cough as you were walling away.

Wonderful thing about football is the variety of opinion. There's all sorts. Wrong ones (see above), and right ones (below).  :P

Aaron owned Trifiro last night. I notice in Hughsey's comment he says "he wasn't worth the money he was asking", which may be true, but if you had the choice of two players on the same $, I can't see anyone sensible selecting Jason.

Don't get me wrong, I like Jason, he's a useful player for squad depth in a salary capped league, but Aaron has an amazing awareness of the game that can't be coached.

NO ONE, I repeat no one, should ever grab, let alone pull on, a flag that someone is waving in the RBB.

    The stupid girl & her mates who grabbed the flag that was being waved;

    1. EASILY could've moved to another section within the RBB if the flags were blocking their oh-so-precious view.
    2. I hope they NEVER take another step in the RBB.
    3. And the nerve of them, to aggressively grab one of Nato's flags, on one of the two nights (this coming Friday's match as well) which was for Nato.

Absolutely disgusting and appalling stuff, by those so-called Wanderers fans.

You would be remiss to suggest that we would better off without the likes of Mooy and Polenz this year...

Mooy was hot and cold when he was with us, however I see him as a more matured and consistent player now..anyway, spilt milk

How many matches in a row now has Popa been forced to make a sub? Tactically, we've had far better sub options, but have been forced into early subs because of injury. I'm sure Kuzi would've been given a run last night if we weren't forced to replace Mateo at half time. It's starting to get concerning.

They are obviously Red and Black members, how is this still an issue in season 3...

When I saw before the game, the lower numbers in the north end I tried to get in to sing in the rain and boost the numbers etc. Do you think I could get in..haha, thats poor when I just want to do more for the team..I guess I am paying the penalty for when flares have been ripped previously and the RBB have pointed the finger at blow ins..members only..

so that spoils it for me I guess..

It's painful to say. ******* painful.

But Mooy was immense last night. His goal probably shouldn't have happened but he was tearing up our right wing.

On another note if it wasn't for Tanaka it could of been a disastrous night. I like the look of him at RB.

Juric was a bit quiet for the first while, but he was finally starting to show that hunger again. In the second half he was really tough for the defence, and even though the penalty was soft it was some really good work by him.

And Ruka!!! Throughout that game I was finally starting to lose patience with him, he should have had three goals. But what a finish, again he scores when he has no time to think about it. Which makes me think that there is someone who can score goals in there, and his problems are more confidence-related.

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
