The Gombau Era began tonight for the Western Sydney Wanderers against Melbourne City with a 1-1 draw in Melbourne.

Melbourne City has the best of the opening opportunities, as the Wanderers were clearly struggling to adjust to the Gombau tactical regime. Western Sydney lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation with Kearyn Baccus as the lone defensive midfielder, and Roly Bonevacia & Mark Bridge playing together in central midfield. With Alvaro Cejudo on the bench due to injury, Gombau promoted Jaushua Sotirio to the starting lineup.

The best chance in the first half for the home side came from a horrid backpass by Raul Llorente, as his attempt at finding Vedran Janjetovic instead found Ross McCormack. The striker was in the penalty area unattended with only the keeper to beat. With all the time in the world McCormack could only find the boot of Janjetovic. Late in the half  McCormack was given a shot from a free kick right outside the area, he curled the ball over the wall but it was met with another wonderful save from a flying Janjetovic.

The inclusion of Sotirio into the squad turned into a move of genius. With Osama Malik caught on the ball by Oriol Riera his defensive team-mate Llorente pounced on the loose ball, sending it along the ground for the run of Sotirio, who made the best of the ball being slightly behind him to send it through the legs of Eugene Galekovic, onto the woodwork, before the winger turned it home into the open net to open the scoring.

Melbourne City looked slightly the better side in the second half, and with the help of the VAR they were given a spot kick in the 55th minute. After Osama Malik booted the ball into Row Z, the ref awarded a goal kick, only to have the VAR overturn the referees decision & award a penalty for a foul from Llorente. After wasting a bunch of chances in open play, McCormack stepped up to the spot & sent Janjetovic the wrong way to equalise.

The last half hour was a see-sawing affair that Melbourne City given the benefit of the officials whistle on numerous occasions. The Wanderers pressed & probed for a winner but weren't able to find one, while City were unable to get past a stellar Janjetovic for a second time. The Gombau Era starting for the Wanderers with a draw, just like the Wanderers first ever game under Popovic against the Central Coast Mariners. The biggest tactical change came with the use of Baccus as a sole defensive midfield distributor, Alvaro Cejudo was deployed in the midfield and made a lot of good touches but it will remain to be see if that will be a permanent switch. All in all, a decent if not wonderful start for Josep Gombau as the Wanderers manager, but one that looks promising.

He's better than Pio. He'll score more goals this season. I think Josep thinks he needs to put in more. He might be right. But we'll wait and see.

I'd be quite happy to start both Santalab and Riera. It may be crazy but Riera is quite prepared to lay off or set up others and Santa is a mongrel when looking to score.

Yeah he needs to get Santa more game time somehow without reducing Riera’s.

Lol I wouldn't mind you being the coach. You would put a rocket up the arses of a few players with your brutal honesty

Rofl that substitution says otherwise I admire your loyalty as I do lots of others but no...

You've been crapping on the guy ever since he's been signed. That he is scoring goals for us is not good enough in your books, apparently. And you use his substitution to proof your point, whatever that point may be. Yay right.

C'mon Riera is looking good and has an asterix against his name for effort and vision.

Disappointing that tiff with the coach though.

Zappone reckons he was angry at the lack of service, not Gombau.

Riera is on track to be our 3rd highest goalscorer in one season lol.

Pfft, he scored against Real Madrid last season, he can't be any good.

I agree, even Santa looks looks lost at sea this year when he gets on. There’s something not quite right in the delivery forward. Would love Antonis back.

Antonis is sorely missed, but as the team stands we are not as direct if Herd isn't on the field. If we get a fit Herd and Risdon back we can only be stronger.

The Fathead experiment has failed, though.

Yep, Herd coming back means Baccus and Roly can play further forward, dropping Fathead to the bench where he belongs. And Risdon gives us so much more impetus going forward.

If you can't see reira's quality you should give Football viewing away, anyway I have no interest to feed trolls on this issue

as many said during the match lucky to get a draw some terrible mistakes in the game llorente again with another moment of madness and yeah baccus sometimes trying to drive forward as the lone sitter losing the ball. Not sure he has the maturity to play a lone holder role.

Vedran outstanding - that's the keeper we need to see every week.

Gombau lots of work to do. 6 of 7 next games in NSW - wonderful platforms to start winning. To steal arnies line surely we are only at 50%!!!!

Llorente is diamond or stone - no in between. But when he's on, he's great.

We are great when teams hold off us and let us play around, but under pressure we turn to mush. $$City got in our faces and we played panic passes. Then in transition there are too many eyes for the ball and not their free runners - very patchy stuff.

I still think Herd in DM is the key. We're bleeding through there.

Look it will take a little while for the players to figure out Gombau’s system, and for Gombau to get them fit.

Don’t worry guys. We are only at 30%, yet we are drawing away to the best teams.

Great game last night except for the VAR farce

Saw a couple of forumites with familiar looking scarves as well - would've said hi but I was struck down with a cold :(

Kudos to the people who started chants here and there throughout the game - the City active support are a hell of a lot better now than the last time we were here

Also good to see us chant even after they drew level and not sit there sulking quietly

Riera lost possession on quite a few occasions - it was not his best game. It is good to see players passionate about remaining on the field, but his reaction to Gombau's move was rude and unnecessary. Simply, he was not up to his usual standard.

Santa has been a regular scorer for this club in the past, but has had precious little field time. It was reasonable to give him what only ended up being a paltry 15min (though much better than the Aloisi brothers [and others]) who put players on with a minute to go at best!

If anything, it was a message from Gombau that he was not going to have an unnecessary pro-Spanish bias.

Evolution takes time. We were a bit lucky to escape with a point, but let's not judge too early.

The stars are aligned for us to go on a good run now. Hard 4 consecutive away games done. However as we all know we don't do easy. Expecting to just show up and beat the Nix will end in tears. This next half dozen or so games will be a strong indicator of where we will finish this season. The squad is what it is. Josep will start tweaking. If we aren't top 3 by Xmas then we aren't a real contender. Soulless just will never be a fortress.

Having said all that. Result against the Nix?  Drawski... !

Baccus had probably one of the worst games since he hit form mid way through last season.

Roly is way more effective for us at 10 and has been average ever since moving to the number 8 and Bridge the less said the better.

There's your central midfield right there.

Then an away draw against the team running 2nd, you would take it in a heartbeat.

But that Central midfield needs to be fixed asap.

Please no ! 5 is enough already....there's no way I want to sit through another eight to see us break our record  amount of draws..........lol

Agree abot SOP.......Parra can't come quick enough.

    We will beat the Nix...!!!
