  • Mariners Prove Too Hard To Break Down

    mack

The Central Coast Mariners set out to claim a draw against the Western Sydney Wanderers and they did just that, as the match at Parramatta finished without a goal.

The Mariners had precious few chances, having set out to stall and time waste from the opening half, their play condensed into a rinse repeat of long ball after long ball to the head of Matt Simon. The Wanderers should have taken the lead through Nikita Rukavytsya, only for the winger to appear to pull out of what would have been a tap-in had he not been spooked by the oncoming goalkeeper. Western Sydney's attack couldn't break down a team insistent on playing with everyone behind the ball, although questions will be asked of the Mariners after their decision to play for a draw against the last placed Wanderers.

The game was dull and quite forgettable, two bright moments for the Wanderers being the first match for new signing Nick Kalmar, and the senior debut of Michael Trajkovski. The match as a whole was massively overshadowed by a post-game tirade from a handful of members of the crowd, pointed mostly in the direction of fullback Shannon Cole. Cole, who was a leading public figure in the players union fight to claim more money from their ultimately failed Club World Cup bid, eventually made his way up towards the home end after a tirade of abuse was hurled at him by that small section of the crowd. Security eventually managed to send Cole on his way and the tensions simmered down after the players made their way over to clap the supporters and vice versa.

When Western Sydney first began the majority opinion, expert and punter alike was a last placed finish while being competitive. Perhaps they will judge themselves right in the end, even though they had to sit through a Wanderers Premiership & Asian Champions League success to see it.

The next match against Melbourne Victory looks like being the final chance for numerous players, with the likes of Adeleke, Saba, Appiah & Mullen all set to exit in the January transfer window. Changes can't come soon enough for the wooden spoon favourites, having failed to win a single game so far this A-League campaign, leaving them already 12 points behind 6th place.

The Wanderers next match is against Melbourne Victory on Tuesday the 6th of January.

I liked Kalmar, and I thought Haliti played out of his shoes (was surprised)

Fatigue, tiredness and irritability seems to be plaguing our squad. I sense the pay dispute and the higher entitlement of the players might be strangling our winning efforts.

    Interesting times ahead. Stand united.

    Table never lies.

Was quite happy with Haliti out right.  Put in a better stint than when up top.  Ruka going through the middle for much of the game playing as a striker?  Totally wasted.

Haliti seems to have really stepped up since he was given the captaincy in the second CWC game, he played his heart out tonight.

It felt like I was watching a reply of the previous CCM match. We need someone to take control of the match. Grab it by the scruff. We are also very low on confidence. Disappointing, but we can still beat Victory on Tuesday. Seems strange to say but it's not impossible.

For the first time since signing up as a member before our very first game against CCM in October 2012, I am seriously starting to question Popovic. I'm not saying Popovic out or any of that bullcrap - hell, he won us the ACL only 2 months ago - but what is he thinking? Seriously? Many times over the past few years we've questioned his selections and apparent 'rotation policy', but he's always proved to have some method behind the madness and pulled out important results when they've been needed.

At the moment, it looks like he's got nothing. The players are flat, we are so predictable in our play, we haven't made adequate signings - from looking to replace Mooy/Ono at the end of May to finding an injury replacement for Santa - and the rhetoric coming out of post-match press conferences every week is killing me. "Promising signs" "Improvements on last week" "Looked dangerous in attack, just couldn't take our chances" and so on and so forth. There was nothing promising about tonight. I love this club through thick and thin and will be there at every home game no matter what our form or results, but tonight was a horrible game all round from both sides and very painful to watch. And even when there are promising signs, even when we do look dangerous, that counts for nothing if we aren't getting results and scoring goals, the very essence of football. We're almost halfway through the domestic season now and the coaching staff is still rolling out the same lines about promising signs - the time for promising signs is gone! The so called improvement and 'level' we should be performing at should be here now. The time to deliver on that is now, not in 5 weeks' time.

We're gonna need a major miracle to make the finals at this rate and it seems like Popa and the staff have got nothing. The Asian Cup break is coming and such a good time for us. It seems like we really miss Ante Milicic and his hard work behind the scenes. Whatever it is, our coaches, our players - hell, the whole club - needs to have a hard look at themselves and think about what's going on because everything is so one dimensional, predictable, you name it at the moment. I love this club and it kills me to see us going through this, and maybe this rambling post is just my post-match depression, but I really think that's the truth right now.

What I REALLY want to know about tonight's game is how the fûck do you get a chance to be in the half time Wanderdog eating comp?

That was bullshit, apart from the stupid idea but that was the slowest eating of a hotdog I have ever seen, I could've downed 3 in the time that it took one of them to eat 1

Thought we did ok tonight. The balls just not going in for us. I thought if we'd scored the 1 we could have gone on and scored 3. The worst part about it all though is its now affecting the players confidence. They just don't know what they have to do. Popas gonna have to be a very strong leader to sort it all out.

News.com.au is reporting the RBB turning on the team, someone needs to end this garbage ASAP.

I bet that they wont report the standing ovation from the crowd after the game when most of the cameras probably went away

I was there for the standing ovation as well .. But watching someone trying to climb the fence to fight cole was intense

    - We were competitive but a below average performance. Can't fault the players, they did all they could on the pitch.

    - I was frustrated at the lack urgency to attack, there were very few times in which we looked at turning the screw. Perhaps the players we had available just aren't good enough, but we move on to bigger challenges.

    - Know it was hot and humid, but I was disappointed not to see the high press on the field. Frustrating to see CCM just being able to pass the ball around, maybe we reverted to a contain policy but didn't think it should have been against a team on the bottom half of the table.

    - I can't see us getting any better against MV especially with no saba (if he wasn't on the bench today which there was no real excuse or reason, he won't play again), no castelen or Juric. At the moment it looks like our front four aren't any closer to scoring than we have been, it's not about creating opportunities, it's about that killer instinct in front of goal.

I like what someone else said, these are the sort of performances that we were expected to put in the first season. How frustrating, but there is no quick fix, we will have to just ride this period out and hope that we get some bodies back plus potential any other transfers that may come in. Top 6 getting harder and harder every game we fail to come good or just eventually scoring by not converting our opportunities.

Let's not forget the disgraceful banner before game, 'fight like your fans'. We must get rid of this bad supporter culture, a bit more democracy perhaps ...

    Jog on. Lol
