  • McBreen Double Punishes 10-Man Wanderers

    mack

Jason Trifiro was given his marching orders 10 minutes after half-time, with McBreen scoring in either half for a 2-0 win by Central Coast that lifts them 4 points clear at the top of the A-League ladder.

Note: Condensed report from FootballAustralia.Com as Fox Sports has no video, or match-centre video available to write it.

The Wanderers fought and scrapped with the experienced Mariners outfit and had every close decision go against them. When reduced to ten men early in the second half, they pushed the A-League leaders to their limit, pressed to the very end and were unlucky not to get a result

    .

The match was marred by several contentious decisions and the referee Chris Beath’s obsession with handing out yellow cards to Wanderers players. The Wanderers felt they had two strong shouts for penalties and were denied those and anything else they asked for. The most telling blow to the home team was the two yellow cards to midfielder Jason Trifiro who left his team a man down in the 54th minute. Both challenges were clear yellow cards. The Mariners' robust striker McBreen, who scored both goals, appeared to play with immunity throughout and crashed around at will.

As expected, both teams started strongly, tousling for possession early on in the match with the Wanderers pushing high. Trifiro and Mile Sterjovski had some early chances on goal but were easily dealt with by both goalkeepers. Kwabena Appiah-Kubi, who replaced suspended Youssouf Hersi on the flank, looked dangerous in attack and provided some great runs and opportunities for the red and black.

In the 24th minute, Joey Gibbs was storming towards goal and was taken down in a late tackle by Trent Sainsbury, who was the last line of defence. Amazingly, Sainsbury only received a yellow card from Beath despite Gibbs having only 25m of clear space and the keeper to beat when he was taken down.

Strong midfield work from the Wanderers courtesy of Jerome Polenz and Shinji Ono was unlucky not to go rewarded in the first half, when a few late chances for Gibbs and Mark Bridge went begging. The Mariners were able to make the first impact on the scoreboard in the 41st minute, when Daniel McBreen was able to beat two Wanderer defenders with some fancy footwork, before slotting the ball past Ante Covic at close range.

The Wanderers started the second half with some fierce attack and looked to be the more dominant team early-on. This was evident in the 50th minute when an unbelievable goal line foot block from Pedj Bojic denied a certain goal as he blocked Ono’s bullet shot inches from the line. The Wanderers went a man down in the 54th minute when Trifiro was sent off after receiving his second yellow. This didn’t dampen the Wanderers attack with both Bridge and Polenz threatening the Mariners’ defence with some close chances.

Substitute Labinot Haliti had the desired effect immediately after coming on in the 66th minute, when two of his headers narrowly missed their target, both going over the top of the cross-bar. The physical contest continued in the late stages of the second half with both sides exchanging chances but neither team seemed to be able to make a dominant stand. McBreen was able to put the icing on the cake for the Mariners in the late stages of extra time after a defensive mix-up gave him the opportunity to put a shot from outside the 18 yard box in the back of an empty Wanderers goal.

The Wanderers next match is against the Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium, Wellington on Sunday the 13th of January at 2:30pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time.

The RBB will be attending the Western Sydney vs Sydney FC W-League Derby at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday the 12th of January at 3:00pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time. We hope many of you can make the effort to the support the team in their final fixture of the W-League season.

The referee got more than a few decisions wrong.

I'm loving the Wanderers and singing with the RBB.

BUT we can't be throwing bottles onto the pitch guys!

For me, Trifiro was poor the entire match, then got sent off.. Didnt make anything out of his chance..

He's been one the one player who I would said doesn't deserve another another contract. I just don't think he's shown enough to warrant it. I think the league is a bit above him

IMO Caira tried to play the ballback after he lost control. So Mcbreen was not offside.

With the changes we had Im very happy with our performance.

Their 1st goal was quality. But again IMO if Beachamp was playing that flick on from Kwasnik would not have been allowed. La Rocca is good but Beachamp is a beast and would have been to strong for Kwasnik. So the changes cost us a goal that would not have happened.

Kubi is simply a reactive player. In the trade we call them dumb players but can sometine do the unexpected. What he di was continually block the overlaps of Polenze. He keeps running away from the ball. Looking for it over the top in the most basic of ways. When he was replaced we saw the overlapping danger that Polenze gave. We looked very dangerous.

Gibbs isnt a starting #9 and this is a big issue for us.

I thought Triforo did ok but is a play the ball back player and that is frustrating. But he is ok. The 2nd yellow was poor discipline. popa will bench him post the 2 game ban just to teach him a lesson.

Cole is ok but D'apuzzo is better.

The game was tough, good quality and typical of a 1st v 3rd battle. The great thing is we saw them play and we know that when we meet them in the GF :) we can be very confident.

We did well. I'm in bay 47. I turned around to see Hersi, Krisinger and Poljak sitting behind me in the outdoor corporate box area. We missed all three of them badly. The skipper was out too but La Rocca did well . No sign of D'Apuzzo either. That meant two young guys upfront and not ideal. However that was most definitely a red card by Sainsbury on young Gibbs. I could not believe that woeful decision. All in all, we lost 0-2 but the last goal you can forget. Sometimes a scoreline does not always tell the whole story. True of football and Life. What I liked is the clear intent shown by the Wanderers. They press, they attack, they want to take it to teams, they entertain. They are a pleasure to watch guys. Lets move on and revenge that stupid 0-1 loss across the ditch when the wind scored for them. Have you ever seen something as unlucky as that?

    Hi all,

My 9 year old son Zach and I joined the Wanderers on the first day the membership went on sale. We were hugely excited by the promise of the Wanderers and that we finally had a local team to support. Up until Sunday's match an absolute highlight for us has been the amazing passion and support shown by the RBB who add so much to the atmosphere of each game.

I'm afraid our views changed on Sunday with the disgraceful interruption of the game with bottle throwing and a flare onto the field when the game was not going our way. This is the kind of behaviour that entrenches stereotypes of Western Sydney as 'yobs' and thugs and did nothing to help the team, in fact taking up valuable time in the closing minutes. The universal response form all the fans around me in general admission was of huge disappointment in letting down the team and the other supporters with this terrible display of bad sportsmanship.

My nine-year-old son summed it up perfectly when on the way back to the car when he said completely unprompted, "The RBB sings 'We will follow you forever', well tonight the team would have been better without their followers". That is not the kind of sporting display I want to take my son to, nor was it one the other fans around me appreciated.

We have a huge opportunity to build a club and an atmosphere that breaks down stereotypes, but this kind of behaviour from a minority of 'fans' quickly demolishes the great work being done by the club and the players.

Let's hope we don't see it again.

Very well said. I understand the the vast majority of supporters and RBB members are well behaved but the number of bottles (including the flare) were thrown but more than just 'a few trouble makers'. There were at least 30-40 bottles.

That said, I am sure that everyone can learn from this and whilst we all love the passion of the fans there is a line and it was crossed on Sunday.

    :)

    :)

Take the time to read through the multiple threads about the game and you will realise this has been discussed to death. Either way if you remember the incident clearly the bottles, were thrown from the back of the bays where a lot of newcomers, bandwagoners etc were situated and at such a big game its hard for a new group like the RBB to have control over the whole terrace. Definitely something we don't want to see again, its the RBB philosophy to support the team, not bag the ref. We are new to this, have patience and remember all the awesome we try to bring to the games, not the short period of stupidity shown by 30-40 people out of a group of over 1000+.

As a massive supporter of the RBB since day 1, I would just like to state the following:

    - The person a few posts above me has a point. A good one. I love animosity at football games, but projectiles onto the field? C'mon... its useless and embarrassing.

    - NOBODY (at least not me nor the person above from what I have read) is blaming the RBB for this. The RBB, in my opinion is not only the most passionate active support in the league, but also one that embodies the right culture, right attitude and the correct family values. It has no control over the "randoms" who I believe are individuals that take it upon themselves to harm the proud reputation the RBB has built over a short period of time.

    - The fact that our own players had to go there and clean up the mess was just atrocious. What great character those players have, but we don't treat our players who have tried so hard in testing conditions like that. Once again, i KNOW the RBB is not like that.

    - Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, the media is waiting for scenes like this to brand Western Sydney in a certain way. I don't care about the media, but the least we can do is help ourselves.

So with that said, please realise, this should not happen again (most of you have understood this already) and hence, now that we all know this, let us not need to bring it up again.

This post is mostly aimed at those who may be reading this website, are not a part of the RBB and perhaps may be involved in acts such as these. It's not at all a big deal, but one we don't need. We are the toast of the league remember? :)

    • Without trying to be an immensly massive knob, and I say this to someone who's opinion I respect a lot on here, thats absolutely not true. Theres a large pile studies on the impact of player performance post ACL injuries. I'm happy to have discussion about it thats evidence based, though the post game may not be the best place. We are here solely to bemoan our current standings aren't we?  That all said, I dont think Tate has any real future with his current output. He's been back at it for a season and is only showing decline
    • Not sure.  Will decide at the last minute but doubtful after todays performance.
    • With all due respect, I can't remember Tate ever putting in a decent 90min.
