  • Mierzejewski Brace KO's Wanderers

    mack

An early gift to the Wanderers from Andrew Redmayne was cancelled out as Sydney FC ran out 3-1 winners in the last derby of the regular season.

With both teams suffering from suspensions and Sydney FC having flown home from China it looked to be the Wanderers best hope of taking all three points against their city rivals in a game marked by teeming rain.

10 minutes in and the away side capitalised on some poor defence and awful goalkeeping to open the scoring through Oriol Riera. Marcelo Carrusca found fullback Raul LLorente with a lofted ball over the top, his cross bobbled into the path of Andrew Redmayne and the ex-Wanderers keeper spilled it to the advantage of Riera who couldn't miss from 6 yards out. That was the highlight of the evening for the Wanderers as they were unable to put together any major attacks, the closest being Ikonomidis flashing a header wide in the 25th minute.

As it looked like the Wanderers might have something to protect in the second half, Michael Thwaite was judged to pull down Ninkovic outside the box as Matt Simon tried to play back a one-two pass. Adrian Mierzejewski stepped up and fired in a curling free kick from 24 yards out, over the wall, past Vedran Janjetovic. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced over the roof of the net for the equaliser.

Sydney FC had the lead in the 55th and Mierzejewski had a brace. Ninkovic hit a cross onto the penalty area that neither central defender headed away, and instead of clearing the ball, Carrusca chested it down inexplicably, Thwaite had been knocked down by Matt Simon, and with Roly Bonevacia & Carrusca pulling out of a challenge on Simon, the ball fell to the feet of Mierzejewski and he shot unerringly into the bottom corner. It was dreadful, inept defence, players falling over themselves and failures to clear the ball as good as throwing it into the net.

The match was practically over by that point and the third sealed it. Bonevacia capped off his season worst night by losing the ball with an aimless pass to Ninkovic, he ran into the box, released Bobo with a backheel and with the defence beaten the striker slipped the ball past Vedran.

The mild positives for the Wanderers that they showed some fight in the contest, that they had glimpses of quality in attack, but once again they were let down by flops like Roly & Alvaro Cejudo who came on in the second half to no effect whatsoever,  with one major contrast being Mierzejewski smashing home his free kick and Cejudo smashing a free kick into the Sydney FC wall. Mark Bridge was a passenger, Riera once again was forced to run back into the midfield to try and hold the ball, which of course left the Wanderers missing his quality on the end of moves and Hamill & Thwaite were comprehensively outplayed by Matt Simon, a striker who hasn't scored in two years.

With the majority of the team coming off contract at the end of this season there are few people on that list who look like they deserve another year as a professional footballer. It might even be for the best of the Wanderers drop out of the 6, as there will be no consolation finals series loss and Gombau can immediately get to work clearing out the deadwood from the Popovic era.

Comical that people are still trying to blame popa. Did he tell gombau to play tiki taka during a monsoon?

For the record, I’m not blaming him. I just think the type of players he likes are different to Gombau types.

Yeah louisenrique and I were standing there saying “it’s wet, we’re up 1-0, smash it up to the best header in the league or if we do get around them then smash some crosses along the ground and wait for another Redmayne mistake”. We had a free kick wide on the left (just after they scored?) and took it short. Crazy.

But it seems it’s gotta be one or the other - either Popa or Gombau’s fault. I just think its the inevitable bumps you’re gonna get when you’re recruiting a coach mid season. I was never #popaout but I also think that any coach deserves a full season. Halfway through next year is the first time we should be thinking about sacking Josep, otherwise we’re just another club falling for the internet-era, short attention span, win-now football culture.

I think people overreact no matter what. We’re not as good as we think we are when we win, or as bad when we lose. I’m tired of hearing people piss and moan (facebook mainly, at least here it’s usually down with some black humour and intelligence) when things don’t go perfectly for them.

1 win in the last 13 derbies.

    Absolute joke.

Massive changes needed in the next few years.

With all due respect because I agree one win in 13 isn’t good enough, but what do you want? We JUST had the massive change (coach).

I was going to say well done to the Wanderers fans who did part with thier money and turned out but after one/a few idiots lit flares, we are going to lose points. Thanks for nothing

The people who actually turned up and have been the ones creating the atmosphere for 5 years did something I don’t agree with!! How dare they!

    Fair dinkum.

I personally thought the second one was pushing our luck (note use of the collective even though I wasn’t part of the group that did it) but that’s what you get when you’re in an active area - someone’s probably gonna do something that you don’t like/agree with etc. Get over it.

Remember this guy used to work for the FFA and you'll understand why he is completely blinkered and out of touch.

This Brian guy, it’s like years of FFA mismanagement mean nothing & he has been living in a cave whilst all the furore that has culminated in the current congress disaster has passed him by. Astonishing and this is most disrespectful act that he decides to speak up on!

Lets not give this guy anymore oxygen, I certainly have much more colorful language to express towards the FFA than just “Fck them”

They're getting massacred - and rightfully so

Speaking of massacres, I for the life of me cannot believe that ESFC who had a midweek game and had to deal with a long flight to China and back still looked fitter and played better than us

    Just can't understand it

We're four points ahead of seventh place with six games to go

We have Perth and Wellington up next at home, let's hope we can bounce back and get 6/6 points and solidify us in the top 6

    FCB is always right :-)

We are never going to win anything with Gombau. He is incapable having this squad play to its strength, but exposes its weaknesses instead. Roly and Bridge are a shadow of themselves. Herd in the stands.

That's not man management. That's stupid. He says that he won't change, so Gombau Plan A all the way it is. But as long as people are enjoying the positive signs...

    Ahhhh... FCB

In terms of not getting the best out of this squad from the beginning & how long it’s taken him to get the point where we started getting results, I agree with you.

He has come a long way from his first game in preseason, he has changed to a system that is half way between where we were & where he wants to be. To honest we are in limbo, the wins we have had are just helping us limp towards the end of the season.

I just hope that the club makes it clear that just competing and winning a few games isn’t good enough.

We won't make the top 6.

    Not that it matters

We will make the top 6 but that’s more down to other teams incompetence rather than deserving a spot.

    On the game:

Is anyone surprised at the result, I certainly thought we’d give them more of a fight than the 0-5 loss last time but there is a reason why they are first & they have showed why they head/shoulders above the rest of the crop. Gombau isn’t willing to sacrifice style or tactically change to win the game with this squad..

So was Herd in the stands or in the UK I’ve read both.

Could have done with him being on the field. Gombau really does like Lustica doesn’t  he

25k crowd think that's smallest for Derby at Allianz ? Weather certainly dampened atmosphere.

Top of the table, making other teams look like school kids, in the ACL....  Any team flying high like they are should attract more than that paltry turn out, rain, hail or snow, especially for a derby. As their home game, it was up to them to bring the crowd last night and they didn't. 25k should be at the lower end of figures in a non-derby match right now for them. I suggest it's more a reflection on the league rather than SFC if that's what to top team in the most populous capital of the country serves up. I can't offer a solution though.

It matters because of the consequences with media, sponsors, governing body. They care. Oh yes, and then there are the bans, of course...

The flares, the club has made the stance very clear & I’m surprised there isn’t more mainstream media fallout. Thought Bossi would be straight on to that...

Stupidity really, those people won’t see a football ground for 10 years.

I guess the dissapointing thing is in the first half for all their possession apart from the Vedran save around the cnr esfc produced next to nothing and we essentially handed them 3 goals but meh that’s going to happen when you can’t keep the ball

It’s been said bridge, roly and lustica not good enough although lustica put in a mountain of effort defensively

big Baccus put into the dog house is hurting the team, he has grown over last few years and it’s a shame whilst I believe he would make us better he’s not going to get a chance - he’s the only one who can really get box to box probably our fittest player

the flare was the highlight of the night long overdue

if it’s cost us 3 points meh who cares we aren’t winning s.hit this year

reira in this season is becoming a wanderers legend, he was back on the freaking corner flag defending in the 80th min last night, Santa has showed him the wsw spirit

I think people should give up on Herd. He signed with Perth and pulled out for family reasons, then went home again when his wife had a kid.

He really should just live in England and take whatever contract he can get, whether that’s League One or whatever.

It was explained to him after the 0:5 derby debacle - use a more pragmatic approach to winning games. It was just talk, by the looks of it, and/or the coach wastn't listening. It is now far too late for these kind of conversations.

We have to ride out the third dismal season in four years, then do a stock take, and hopefully make good decisions.  After all, the chairman has a bold plan for this club, and I do as he told us to do: I am marking his words.

We don't need flares surely we have learned the stupidity of that and lets hope the culprits don't get to see a live A league game for along time.

We don't Need Roly he is suspended next week keep him on the bench , we don't need bridge who you would think liked The smurfs more than his employer , he was cuddling up with Arnie after the game get rid of him NOW and give Cejudo game time he can't do any worse.

Give the baccus brothers more time on the field

Geez I hate Arnie  and still struggle to think The smurfs are under the salary cap

Green the ref was very obviously leaning to The smurfs every time we breathed on a Smurf his whistle was out and they could do what they wanted to us.

    Cant wait for next week

Bossi mentioned it in his game write up and selected a photo. Over this season really, long since over SoP, long since over ESFC being streets ahead of the comp....how the **** is the gulf so massive in a tight salary capped comp! They are either rorting the cap or are just very clever indeed with their 'creative' finances, but you got to admit they have recruited so ******* well...and we haven't for so ******* long. How did it get this bad...sigh.....

It hasn’t rained properly in 12 months. A Sunday night derby rolls around and a monsoon falls upon us. Send WSW over to Cape Town and their water woes will be over in 90 minutes... I don’t think I’ve ever been that soaked through. Couldn’t have given two shits about the result by the end of the game.

Not that it made a difference to the result but that bald Polish bloke and Ninkovic are so protected it’s blatant. Anytime someone goes near them it’s a foul.

Hopefully we never see another Sunday derby again.
