  • Muller Knocked Out During Wanderers Win

    mack

The Wanderers came into their match with Wellington Phoenix practically requiring a win to keep their hopes of finals football alive as the restarted A-League comes to the clutch period before the play-offs, and Kwame Yeboah earned all 3 points with a second half goal.

The only change to the lineup for the home side was putting Irish striker Simon Cox in the place of Mo Adam. Second placed Wellington were in hot form and looking to secure their 2nd place against Melbourne City. The game opened with a nasty challenge from Loius Fenton on the new man Cox, he missed a clearance and followed through collecting Cox in the shin. No card, and no foul as is typical for A-League refs. Wellington came within inches of opening the scoring in just the 3rd minute as David Ball curled a strike from outside the area onto the far post, it bounced on the goal line then into the other post without being clearly wholly over the goal-line and the linesman & referee decided to play on.

Tate Russel bought the crowd to life with an attempted lob from half-way. The match stopped cold in the 20th minute when Loius Fenton continued his assaults on the Wanderers by taking out Nicolai Muller in a mid-pitch attack, as Muller nodded the ball forward to continue an attack, Fenton came in wild and late and collected the Wanderers attacker with a head-on collision that should have been immediately punished with a red card. Instead the referee waved play-on, and then handed a yellow to Fenton who should have already been sent off. Medical staff ran onto the pitch and tended to the knocked-out & concussed Wanderer as he laid on the turf for nearly 10 minutes before being taken off the field on a stretcher. Kwame Yeboah took to the field to take his place.

Kurt Ams continued his poor officiating performance as he found a non-existent foul on the edge of the area, thankfully the shot from Callum McCowatt was weak and landed safely in the arms of Tristan Prendergast. Baccus then failed to get the benefit of the doubt as Ams waved play-on after the midfielder was clipped in the ankles in a similar positon on the other side of the field.

In the first of the 6 minutes injury time the Wanderers attack nearly found the opener. Duke broke down the left flank and outpaced the Wellington defence, passed through to Cox and made a run back into the box. Duke found the return cut-back and fired on goal, it bobbled on the turf and couldn't beat the keeper. Not long after he launched a long range drive on goal that flew into the limited crow and was the last major attack of the goal-less but action packed first half.

Pirmin Schwegler made his way onto the pitch as a substitute for Jordan O'Doherty. The opening stages of the half had little in the way of strong attacks, but a lot of ructions on and off the field. Cam Devlin won himself a well earned yellow after delaying a restart after a Wellington foul and he was followed into the book by Ufuk Talay the Wellington coach.

Western Sydney finally had a deserved one man advantage in the 66th minute. Schwegler played a neat through ball for the run of Yeboah and he torched Luke Devere for pace and his only response was to take out the Wanderer before he made his way into the penalty area. Devere earned his 2nd yellow card in the space of 10 minutes and was off down the tunnel. Schwegler took the free kick but blasted it into the wall.

Kwame Yeboah finally made the pressure pay for the Wanderers in the 73rd minute. Tate Russell, who was one of the best for the Wanderers on the night launched a cross that took enough of a deflection off the attempted block to loop the ball in a fashion that gave the unmarked Yeboah a free header on the 6 yard box and he flashed a glancing header well down to the bottom corner of the far post to give his team a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes to play. Simon Cox should have doubled the lead not long after when Duke fired a ball along the face of goal but with the goal open wide Cox got his feet tangled up and let it fly away for a thrown in. Reno Piscopo has a pair of free kick chances for the Nix and he couldn't get either of them to threaten Prendergast in goal.

Wellington kept their hopes alive with wave after wave of attack, with time running out they threw everyone including the keeper forward, earning multiple corners in a row, with one that David Ball flashed to the near post only to see it turned away by Mo Adam standing on the far post. The Wanderers finally cleared their lines and Kurt Ams blew full time on the tough 1-0 win.

It leaves the Western Sydney Wanderers 4 points away from the top 6, with Adelaide and Perth on 34 points with Western United and the Wanderers chasing them on 30. It was a hard fought win, with Wellington still looking good in attack even with a man down, the Wanderers have clear opportunities for improvement leading to a hopeful finals run. Muller with a severe concussion and possible head fracture might be out for a long time though, and the rest of the team will need to step up.

The next match for the Wanderers is against Perth Glory on Tuesday August 4th, kick off at 7:30PM.

Anyone else attend tonight and was sitting around aisle 215? I never thought it could get worse than the Facebook hero’s, but unfortunately these couple of clowns who also happen to sit right behind us in our usual member seats were again behind us tonight. Learn the ******* rules!
The absolute garbage that comes out of what I assume is father and son is ridiculous. I actually hope either of them or someone who knows them is on here and reads this. You are ******* embarrassing yourselves.
I’m all for a bit of banter and crowd involvement don’t get me wrong. But I don’t got to the game to constantly hear how every challenge against us should be a “yellow ticket you malaka” etc

Thought we did ok in the second half after an abysmal first half showing. Hard to play though when all Wellington wanted to do was foul. Referee was a disgrace tonight. Allowing play to continue after that head clash was unacceptable, even if we were on the attack. All the players around from both sides stopped playing and rushed over to check Muller was ok.

Tough fought scrappy win with poor reffing and no var makes it harder to watch, happy they put in but yeah they could have smashed us by half time if they were switched on. Still concerning is the midfield dm's and trying to go forward always resorting to expect Russell to do to much despite his man of the match performance, swegs made a difference but nows with Muller out time to give Sullivan a crack think he would make a difference. Muller looks like a fractured jaw/cheekbone from the late challenge head clash and was a poor attempt probably with the var would be sent off.

Tate Russel had a bit of a battle with Mcowatt this game but still turned up with the goods. Really taking opportunity with 2 hands with the restart.

Kurt Ams ref what a shocking game he had. If he had done his job when Fenton got Cox... I am just glad Mueller is alright after that. He was so random even Harper and Slater were going off. You know the reffing is bad when they do that

Couldn't attend due to a death in the family. With no Fox, listened to excellent commentary on 2 SWR 999. Beats listening to the double snakes of Speed and Slater

I got annoyed by people in the stadium constantly moaning about the referee. We were **** it’s not the referee that chooses to pass the ball aimlessly back, across, across, back, forward to dm, back again, side.... eventually try and play forward when they are set

We have for quite a few seasons now....In Popa's last season, under Gumby, Babbel and now JPdM......:unknw:. Perhaps it's an indicment of the player roster/quality..?

True i was thinking the same. It's like a blunt attack. The team is full of work horses but no creativity or imagination. We lack a Nico Martinez or Romeo Castelan to open defences

We do, Mueller is about it.

But the “style” we play is terrible I can’t see what we are trying to do.

It doesn’t take great players for a to team to play the ball forwards with some purpose

Yep we have had seasons of this. I don’t know why, players come and go but we still play this slow build up thing drives me mad.

    Stop stuffing about with it!

I really think we make our own luck with referees, simplistically, we aren’t going to get free kicks in a good position while we are passing the ball from Jurman to ziegler to baccus, back to ziegler to Jurman to mcgowan....

Don't know what tantric means but aimless we are. Players from other teams (such as The Jets and the Phoenix) say in post match interviews that their coach provides clear and simple instructions on what they should be doing in given situations. As a result they play with assuredness, their teams have good chemistry and they quickly turn possession anywhere on the field into attacking moves. Our players look clueless on how to play out of some situations. I think this is most apparent when we are trying to play out from the back.

    tantric
    /ˈtantrɪk/

Hmmm I am struggling to hear all the criticisms of the team here,

We played the second best team in the competition , mostly we nullified their very quick transition to attack , I thought we were about 90% of our best and yes we got lucky on the ball from Ball  :) hitting the 2 posts but we got pretty badly beaten up physically last night and had the Referee dealt with things correctly  Wellington would have been missing 2 players.  I also think the referee standard has been pretty awful in every game , even Beath let us out of Jail against CCM.

In simple terms I believe we controlled 90% of that game so lets hope we can step up to another level on Tuesday and clean up The Glory

"Tantric"  I think it got lost in the translation :nea:

Schwegler in the 2nd half helped. He should start against Perth.

I went to the game thought it was an okay match, seemed the Nix were holding back a little... I'm still not sure why Tass isn't starting over Zeigler, first 10 mins he almost cost us twice. Other that that it was just nice to see live football again.

I'm also in the Sullivan in camp, Baccus just hasn't seemed to have kicked on.  Looking forward to getting to Tuesday game also.

“Tantric sex is focused on very slow intercourse with an emphasis on synchronized breathing, touching, eye contact, and intimacy with your partner. Unlike regular sex, orgasm is not the goal, but rather prolonging it and feeling deep connection.”

apparently the musician, actor and total bellend Sting is a proponent

    Describes our football

very slow emphasis on passing for no apparent reason unlike regular football scoring a goal is not the goal, but rather prolonging it and a feeling of deep frustration by the crowd

what I’m saying is that watching our backline move the ball slowly without any end goal or purpose is basically like Sting banging away for hours

Agree, I thought the Nix attack was toothless. Only had 2 shots by half time. A majority of the Nix 8 or 9 shots came from the last 10 minutes.

Yes, we gave the ball away a fair bit but I don't think the performance was as bad as some people are making out, particularly from Facebook.

Tass should 100% start next game. Sullivan and Schwegler in for O'Doherty and Baccus. Schwegler should have enough fitness now, seeing as he came on earlier than the previous game. Sullivan was apparently recovering from an injury of sorts before the season started, surprised he hasn't gotten any minutes at all so far.

When the ground announcer was expecting everyone to roar back the names of the players when he was introducing them, as if it was a full house, I thought "oh man this is going to be horrible".

But it got better from there. As our old mate luisenrique said, on his first trip to the new stadium, "100% more enjoyable than any game at Spotless".

We beat the team coming 2nd/3rd. Not bad.
