  • Nichols Earns A Point In Perth

    mack

An 80th minute strike from Mitch Nichols rescued a point for the Wanderers, who saw their 7 game winning streak broken but remain 3 points clear of Melbourne City in 1st place.

Andrew Redmayne gifted Perth a penalty just a minute into the game. Diego Castro ran onto a ball in the bottom corner of the 18 yard box, Redmayne inexplicably raced out to meet the ball, missed it completed, collecting the winger who went flying towards the advertising hoardings. Having won the penalty Castro stepped up to take it, firing it past Redmayne despite diving the right way.

Another set piece saw the Wanderers draw level in the 20th minute. A training ground move saw a short corner taken to Mitch Nichols on the byline, he played the ball back up the park to Scott Jamieson. The fullback fired a cross into Brendon Santalab, who had pulled out to the edge of the 6 yard box, stretched to get a foot to the ball and turned it past former Wanderer Ante Covic.

The second half was much like the first, with the Wanderers having the bulk of possession and Perth sitting with 11 men behind the ball. The home side took the lead once again through a 30 yard dead ball strike from Mitchell Oxborrow on the hour mark. After earning a foul, the youngster took aim from an audaciously long way out, his rocket of a shot curled around the wall, Redmayne managed to get a hand on the ball but couldn't keep it out. Between that and the penalty, with Liam Reddy having been signed to the Wanderers, it might be that Redmayne's Christmas gift is getting dropped.

With 10 minutes to play Mitch Nichols scored yet again, as Perth left their former player completely unmarked inside the box and was punished for it. Castelen's quick stepping inside the box saw him lay off to Nichols and under no pressure at all, he curled a side footed shot into the top corner giving Ante Covic no chance at all.

Had Perth been capable and/or willing to play with an attacking mindset this result could easily have gone the way of the Glory. Instead, their stubborn refusal to do anything in defence except stack all 11 men behind the ball, and their inability to do anything but launch it long at the first opportunity saw them throw away a golden chance to take points off the league leaders.

For the Wanderers, it was a game to forget, and at times, the bench, coaches and the players on the field looked disinterested and will be happy enough with a point that keeps them 3 clear of the chasing pack. Coming back home to play Newcastle on Christmas Eve, a much better performance will be expected.

Speaking of nyl how the fook did we let a Wsw product like clut go to roar Who aloisi doesn't play

Clut was a WSW product? :shok:

No, he's originally from Western Sydney. Pretty sure he tried out for our youth team before signing for Roar.

Perth has gotta be the least aesthetically pleasing place to watch football on tv in the league. **** pitch, **** crowd, **** football. I feel like our players just couldn't get up for the occasion, which shouldn't be an excuse, obviously. But something about Perth brings out the worst in football games...this one had good goals but was rubbish otherwise. I can't remember seeing a decent Glory home game.

I would say that's good for Perth. In no time they will start to have a pretty decent home record. Wellington have been able to sneak up on teams like this as travelling to their home ground is always a tough task.

Damn sexy, best set piece i've ever seen us execute

I'd call it the best scuffed shot on goal that leads to a goal since that night in 2005 myself, but the end result was just as good

**** purple strip. Maybe that's why their crowds have always been poor. Imagine having to don that garb every game day!

Agree with most of the above, but I like their drums... a recent addition.....

I do think they're missing the cowbell, tho!    :D  :D

I recently had a death in the family on the weekend and finally got around watching the game yesterday to see what the fuss about regarding redmayne.

And I'll admit, he didn't have the best of games on Saturday but at least he didn't do a Bogden.

Redmayne has been solid for us this season. He has come a long way since his unforgettable debut in rd 1.

Wasn't it him who turned his nose up at WSW? Basically didn't want a bar of us.

I think he wrote his own Wikipedia page, there's some serious poetic license going on in it. My favourite part is where he compares one of his goals to Loic Remy's lol.

Not too disappointed with the result given the following:

    • Travel is always a nightmare to Perth
    • Can be hard to play in front of empty seats (maybe that's why ESFC have a good record in Perth?)
    • We are THE team to beat now, everyone puts in 100% to knock us off our perch
    • We rested/rotated a number of players
    • Both goals were errors: 1. was a silly penalty and 2. should have been saved by Redders
    • Both of our goals were great: 1. sexy as f--- set play and 2. was great again from Butters, who once again played very average but still got us the result

Why the **** wasn't GolGol played... jesus man , this kid kills me

Put Sotirio in the NYL squad and promote GolGol. It's about time he stood up and accounted for himself and show what he has to give.

If it is technically possible then yep, 100% this.

Some more pleasing aspects from what was a pretty dour match. Obviously Butters got us the equaliser, and we were looking to score in the last few minutes of the match. However unlike last season the boys never looked to be chasing the game when we went 2-1 down, and the system/style that has been developing was used more or less until the last second. Let's not forget that in 2014/15 we either capitulated or failed to chase down a deficit in the last ten minutes of almost every match, excluding that 3-2 win over City at home. Our squad last season either got themselves into a hole and couldn't climb out of it, or stuffed winning leads with some fook up or bad luck in the last 15 minutes (e.g. away to Newy for the 1-1 draw, first derby where Brosque won it for the smurfs in the 79th minute, Victory 2-1 win over us away thanks to a Finkler 80 min goal).

I'm no stats guru but I recall in season one we went almost the entire season not conceding a goal in the first 15 minutes of every game we played. Season Three we either conceded in the first 15 or last 15 more times than not. Now we are the team that is owning the second half, with 13 goals in the 2nd half, versus 3 oppo goals in the same time period. And 8 of our 2nd half goals has been in the last 15 minutes.

Players sticking to a system and style that works for them, being better rested than they were last season, and going into the half time with minimal damage on the score sheet are all pathways to more success in 2015/16, and perhaps again not too dissimilar to the magic of 2012/13.

Redders has being doing 1-2 pretty big blunders per game and getting away with it for most part of it.

This game he didn't get away it.

He has a bit of mignolet about him. Confidence keeper. Good shot stopper but average in the other departments.

His distribution has been pretty good though and I'd wager a big part of Popa's game plan.

That said. he seems a confidence player and I do tend to fear the worst sometimes.

I thought Reddy wasn't eligible to play for us until the January window ?

Was just about to post this. Reddy can't play for us on Thursday so with Bouzanis on the outer it's pretty much guaranteed to be Redmane. Reddy has been training with the squad so it's possible he'll be able start on New Year's Day although what if Redmane has a blinder on Thursday? Looks like he'll be playing for his spot against the Jets.

Redmayne can play  only in January transfer window and not before

He's played every match for us this season!

Sorry i meant Reddy not Redmayne.

Nope. Next time we play them it will be at Wanderland.

That set piece is beautiful. Even if Santa wasn't there, Alberto was ready to pounce.

I actually think that the set piece was for Alberto but Santa pinched it....regardless it was great to watch

Don't understand the Dario hate. Things could be much worse: we could've signed Ruka for another season. I'll take Dario over Ruka any day of the week.

I'm fairly certain, in the very least before Saturdays game, Dario was leading the 'shots on target' stat. He just needs to start putting them away. Once he gets that monkey off his back, and Castalen stops hitting the crossbar, our attack will be almost unstoppable.
