  • Normal Service Resumes After A-League Break

    mack

The Wanderers maintained their consistent performances in the A-League with a come from in front 2-1 loss against Melbourne City this afternoon.

Despite taking an early lead through debutante Yojiro Takahagi who curled a free kick through a sea of bodies to leave City keeper Andrew Redmayne clutching at thin air, a defensive error from Nick Kalmar allowed City to break away for the equaliser and it was ex-Wanderer Aaron Mooy who slotted home a long range winner in the 73rd minute.

In addition to Takahagi, Sam Gallaway & Yusuke Tanaka made their debuts for the Wanderers. Tanaka is an injury replacement for Iacopo La Rocca while Nick Kalmar was bought back to the squad on another injury replacement contract for Romeo Castelen.

Just 5 minutes into his debut Tanaka had his debut A-League goal. A free kick on the Wanderers left flank was swung in by the twice capped Japanese midfielder, it beat both defender and attacker and bounced on the penalty spot. Redmayne was caught on his heels expecting a touch from a Wanderer that never came and his despairing dive couldn't prevent the ball nestling into the side netting. The twin Japanese imports celebrated the goal in the corner with a sumo goal celebration.

That was as good as it got for the visitors, as they succumbed to yet another display of inept passing, pointless long balls to a striker ill suited for the task, and complete domination at the hands of the opposition.

It took just 20 minutes for City to equalise, the move started and finished by Jacob Melling. Nick Kalmar strode out of the Wanderers defensive area, only to take an eternity to release the ball. After being closed down by Melling the ex-Heart player spun on his heels before attempting a long switch that was blocked by Melling. It fell to makeshift striker Robert Koren who fed it through the line to Mooy. On the byline his chipped cross found Melling steaming onto the ball and he beat a statuesque Topor-Stanley to thump the ball home to the delight of the crowd.

Western Sydney were on the complete backfoot from this moment on and were lucky to head into the break level, Iain Ramsay butchering a golden chance on the 43rd minute after Kalmar's tackle only managed to result in a near perfect pass to Damien Duff.

If the half-time team talk was the hope for Western Sydney it proved a futile one. Despite the introductions of Labinot Haliti, Jaushua Sotirio & Yianni Perkatis, in the second half the Wanderers only managed two shots on target, neither of which gave Redmayne any trouble at all.

City should have taken the lead in the 67th minute as Ramsay perpetrated the miss of the season thus far. Redmayne blasted a long ball past Gallaway, into the path of David Williams who turned inside and out before crossing along the face of goal. Hamill's missed interception gave Ramsay the simplest of tap-ins on the 6 yard line but he stabbed at the chance and he fell to his knees in shame.

Despite the miss City never looked like losing the game, and when ex-Wanderers Aaron Mooy was given the freedom of AAMI Park he made his former employers pay by taking all three points. Mateo Poljak was caught ballwatching, leaving his direct marker open for a cutback by Jason Hoffman. From the middle of the penalty arc Mooy's first touch put him in a perfect shooting position and he curled the ball past Hamill & Poljak and through Perkatis and finally a full length dive by Covic.

It was a disgraceful exclamation point to cap a performance that shows that the ACL hangover is far from complete, and that the problems on and off the pitch may not be resolved following the tense Club World Cup boycott threat.

While the new Japanese players in general looked like improvements over Adeleke & Saba, Tony Popovic made three subs that took off two poorly performing players, yet still had on the pitch the likes of Hamill with his 48% passing accuracy with 40% being punted long, Rukavytsya losing 75% of his one one one duels, Poljak being completely invisible throughout the match and Santalab getting absolutely no traction on his return.

If the solution is a formation change, changing the players in the squad or even releasing yet more of the existing squad so Bulut & Baccus can come into the squad full time is something that any manager could be kept up late at night thinking about and one that Tony Popovic has little time to ponder over before the next match and a fast approaching Asian Champions League campaign.

The Wanderers next match is against Wellington Phoenix at Penrith Stadium on Sunday the 8th of February at 5:00PM.

Everyone bar our new Japanese lads and Ante need to go away and take a really long hard look at themselves. And NO ONE should be above criticism, just as no one should be excluded from praise when deserved. Owners, coaching staff and players are all responsible both sides of the coin

To be fair and honest, its hard to really criticise the forward pack, i know they fluffed any opportunities they got, but they ahrdly got any opportunities,

Yusuke Tanaka did great, very smart defending, especially that off the line headed clearance, knew straight away where to be and ran and made sure he was there!

Cant say much about Yojiro, didnt see much from him, hopefully we get to see more in the upcoming games :)

Season 1 hiccups in season 3.

We've been spoilt by our early success.

Let's not give up on our boys.

Criticise, it's good to have open communication but let's give the boys the support they expect at Pirtek.

Poisonous critics are shite when criticizing Popa, funny he was the brains of our success thus far but now we see some calling for his head. That's a rude.

Forever a Wanderer, win, LOSE or draw.

Just utter rubbish, worse than the loss to Adelaide away. Avoiding the spoon would be a great effort from here. Sotirio the only positive to come out of today, would like to see him get more game time.

To be honest, we've been found out. Opposition players know what's coming from our defenders and our holding midfielders before our own players do.

I can't blame Popa just yet though, for two seasons it worked; and if it ain't broke, you don't need to fix it.

But now it is broke, and we're sitting dead last without a win.

I won't blame Popa if we change formation and have a crack for the rest of the year. But if we continue with the same bullsh*t 4-2-3-1 and the same results keep coming through, then something has to give.

    this was extremely poor.

there was a 2 on 1 counter attack which was diabolical in its execution.

could have won us the game.

something is definitely wrong with the team.

we were dead and now we are buried.

worst of all, it was one of our former guys who threw the final handful of dirt to end our season.

I have to agree with Bosnich,

the formation and system that is being employed has to change, Popa has to adapt.

teams have worked out what we do

    Agree 100% on this.

And what makes it worse is I don't think the team has worked out what to do, or perhaps Popa hasn't changed with the squad he's either recruited himself or been forced to take due to salary cap etc etc. Season one you could see as clear as day how things were done. The old KISS principle worked well, i.e. kept it simple, stupid. Ono distributed, Hersi & polenz overlapped each other in both defence and attack, Dino acting as the hard running target for long clearances and passes, a solid back four of Polenz, NTS, Beauchamp and mostly Dap. Last season was a bit more possession based, relying more on Spira to build out from the back with La Rocca and Poljak helping shield the centre mid, and Tomi and Santa there to thump home goals.

This season it's been who the **** knows. Okay, there's been disruption to the squad and the ACL campaign obviously drained everyone's physical and mental batteries. But time and time again this a-League season its been all over the place like a mad bastard's poop. Seriously...can anyone explain what was the tactical set up today? How was the team supposedly playing to win today?

I'll always have pride in being a Wanderer, but when things are as crook as this and we can't use the excuses of say a Jets or a CCM it's only fair to ask some questions that some myopic folk won't like.

I have been loathed to be critical of Popa until now, but the nail has been hit on the head here. Something has to change.

I still have faith he is the man to bring us out of this, but it looks like that may be next season rather than this one.

How about that re-tweet by Saba just after Mooy scored the match winner? What a low act, can we now all agree Saba is a dog? Digging up a tweet from 2013 FFS

Oh yeah, I'm with you on that one. ******* prick.

I thought our two Jspanese players were great. There first game. The 10 was working hard in defence. Tanaka had a decent first game, more than one good save.

Galloway was poor not unlike most of the team.

With the new blokes in the squad I expected to be a little rusty but that was just a poorly played game. Victory weren't that good, we just made them look better.

It pains me to say that I'll be watching just to look for improvements leading into next season.

It looked like some of the players have given up. If true then it is going to be a long funeral march to Round 27.

Saba is nowhere near Sol Campbell territory,  but that's where I place him in players that I have a over passionate and unhealthy hatred for.

Sure, be bitter than the club let you go and in your own opinion you never got a fair chance,
but that's no reason to be a farkwit

    • In the ACL, Kewell's Marino's is at home tp Ulsan in the 2nd leg, with Faghani as referee. Starting down 0-1 they get to 3-1 after 30 minutes. Ulsan score after 35 minutes. Marino's have a player sent off after 39 minutes. Ulsan score a penalty near half time.  Both sides have a goal disallowed before full-time.  Now into the 2nd half of extra time and still 3-3 aggregate.
    • That's sorta been the story of their season apart from the first few matches. More (as) often than not they looked likely to lose but have won "convincingly" instead.  Phoenix, in their own way, have done the same. The most extreme example is winning 1-0 without a shot on target.  So, rather than getting away with it, their tactics/strategy has worked.  You know as well as I do, Football has many facets including creating chances, taking chances or alternatively nullifying chances or saving them. Which team wins is not just which team looked most likely but which team made the most (or worst) of the chances or denying them. Surviving is not just luck. A goalkeeper saving numerous times is not luck it's the keeper being better than his opponents efforts. As they say,  it's a team game.
    • They were clearly second best in both games but Abdysh couldn't do enough, then ran out of gas in the 2nd leg and made serious mistakes to give up the game. Mariners got away with it for sure.
