    Opening Day Draw In Perth

    mack

The long awaited opening day fixture saw Perth Glory under new coach Tony Popovic meet his old side the Western Sydney Wanderers in a Sunday afternoon game in Perth, with an entertaining 1-1 draw played out.

Perth took the lead as a result of an awful defensive pass from Vedran Janjetovic. The goalkeeper fired a pass out of the penalty area to Ruon Tongyik, with his back turned on the rest of the pitch he was robbed by Neil Kilkenny, and from there the ball was sent to Andy Keogh. The striker had his shot saved at the first attempt by Janjetovic, he pounced on the rebound and blasted it into an empty net.

Alex Grant nearly doubled the Perth lead on the hour mark, from a corner he rose high above the rest of the pack and thumped the ball onto the crossbar.

Instead the visiting side turned the game level. Tarek Elrich played a wonderful through ball for the run of Bonevacia, despite a hint of offside, he continued into the area and hammered his shot through the hands of Liam Reddy.

Wanderers should have been in front in the 73rd minute, tight combination play between Roly & Baumjohann ended with the attacking mid sending a perfect ball into the path of Riera, and from barely 6 yards out the marquee striker sent it into the Swan river.

With minutes remaining, Ivan Franjic turned around Elrich to knock a cross into the middle of the 6 yard box, Perth débutante and ex-Wanderers Chris Ikonomidis rose to meet with the head but got his angles all wrong and knocked it out behind the far post.

The final action was Scott Neville with a long range header from a corner in the 94th minute. The teams taking a point each from a back and forth game that Perth dominated the majority, but failed to keep the Wanderers at bay for the full 90 minutes.

The Wanderers face Sydney FC next Saturday at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Definitely much better in the second half, much more opportunities created. That reira miss. There was the 3 points right there.

Have to forgive him that one on the basis he's bailed us out many times.

Without a classy DM and they fought back in the second half, I'm not as despondent

On a more positive note...we have a lot of room for improvement still...To play as crap as we did in the first half and come away with a point is a good sign.

Riera, as good as he is, being the marquee man, he HAS to put the ball in the net, he is getting paid the $$$ to do just that.Every goal will be vital this year.Near misses aren't good enough.

Why would you sub off your most dangerous player? The attack died when Baumjohann came off.

He looked out on his feet. There were Perth players right near him and he wasn’t even trying to close them down. Maybe he’s also not the man for holding on for a draw away from home.

Fair call. However, a bit of a concern that hanging on for a draw was the tactic.

To be fair we could of won it late.Had the chances, didn't finish. A point is way better than what is was looking like at halftime.

From the ground first half was decent ball retention but not much else to talk about and yes we were lucky not to be a few down we just didn’t have the impetus it seemed to really go at them

second half much better great goal by roly hopefully it lifts him and yeah Reira wow how did you miss

hamill was excellent tonight and Baum quality on the ball all night but a few Times he could have pulled the trigger but didn’t

sotorio the 10 mins before he came off was as good as I’ve seen him play in central midfield we were okay I fear it might not be good enough next week

post game the players all came over and the general feeling seemed they were down which I guess is good it means there is level of expectation.

Should var given us first half? Perhaps but probably wasn’t deserved

in all a nice away experience and hopefully we build from here still feeling more worried than optimistic

glory active are quiet poor I think we all know that but the only real noise they made was right at end

The handball? If it were the usual Fox Sports crowd (Kossie/Harper/Bozza etc) they'd all want it given. But because it was some random and Jamie Harnwell they didn't think so.

We need a big, strong CDM who will boss the midfield and control the play. We lost the ball so frequently through the middle in the first half yet persisted on playing it up the guts.

I'm going out on a limb here and calling 12 goals for Roly this season.

He's been pretty regular in the preseason.

Not many positives to take out from this game.

I think Baccus did very well and held his in the midfield.

Elrichs pass to Roly that led to the goal was class.

I'd say that trying to press Perth high up the pitch gave glory so much space at the back. We were lucky that we didn't get punished for it. We just can't do that against esfc

Love how blunt Babbel is. "Experts have said Perth are title favourites and we're the worst team, so 1pt is great"

Plenty of positives to take from game especially second half

    - A point away at Perth will be a good result this year

    - We were the stronger team second half and could have got a win, let’s face it we would have fell in a heap second half last year

    - Roly played well especially second half, took his goal well

    Sotirio did well second half

Hate to be the party pooper, but Roly has played well for half a game and scored good goals before. His challenge is doing it for a whole game each week.

Looks like he’s got a manager that will ride him till he does though (or get rid of him), so that’s good.

If Hamill and Tongyik can form a decent partnership over the next few weeks, perhaps Ziggy can move to CDM?

Very much a game of two halves. Was dire in the first. Good to come back, but lots of work to do.

for me gin & Tonyik was immense .. apart from the hospital pass which shouldn’t have gone to him . Best on ground for me !

Babbel is talking up the fact that the experts have written us off completely. He'll use that now to take all pressure of him and the team. He said in the presser that now he's told the boys that we're the worst team so we have nothing to lose now. All pressure externally is off (except from the WSW fans). He'll say the same thing leading up the derby too.

I feel we'll grind out a few results and keep ticking away under the radar until we have a full compliment of players. Our squad is definitely lacking depth and quality. The young boys will get their chance once they're back form international duty.

Ok first half was shite at one point Reira was LB but the goal Perth scored was one Vedran gifted when he passed to Tongyik, Kilkenny did a lung buster for halfway to win that ball and no one told Tongyik.

2nd half improved, but what impressed me was Sotirio. Ok just bare with me here, the moment Sotirio positioned himself properly to stop Davidson and started running up that wing and getting the ball Perth defence started to drop and we started to get our chances he also made good runs in behind and Tracked back to help Risdon after he did nothing in the first half. Most importantly he made smart decisions in the front third for once. He made great crosses for Reira and also passed to Baumjohann when possible, Babbel must have had a chat to him after the first half because its the first time I have ever seen play so well. Tongyik is another positive he reminds me of Topor Stanley, a no nonsense defender.

Still work to do but Babbel earned his money in that 2nd half, even a triple substitution was about to happen before Roly scored, I mean how many times have we seen that before? (the subs not Roly scoring :cheeky:)

it was actually refreshing that we made a comeback in the second half after a very poor opening, Babbel has instilled that never give up mentality back into the team and we got a fair point IMO, we had our chances with Riera but it swung the same way with Ikonomidis header late in the game.

hopefully we get that mentality for the full 90 in the Derby this week. small steps but lets head in the right direction :) COYW!!!!
