  • Perth Cheats 2-1 Win Overshadowed By Police Brutality

    mack

A match that meant next to nothing was overshadowed by a vicious and indiscriminate pepper spray attack by the NSW Police that caused a young teenage boy to be hospitalised.

With the disgraced Perth side expelled from the final series for salary cap breaches taking on a Western Sydney Wanderers team who would finish in 9th place regardless of the result, neither team had anything but pride on the line. Jamie Maclaren opened the scoring in the 16th minute, latching onto a through ball and firing at goal, Dean Bouzanis not getting down fast enough to the shot to keep it out.

Youngster Liam Youlley made his debut for the Wanderers, and he celebrated it with an equalising goal in the 52nd minute. A free kick on the right wing just outside the area was played short to the diminutive midfielder, his effort was relatively tame but it bounced like a pinball through a sea of legs to wrongfoot Danny Vukovic.

Perth were back in front 10 minutes later through the man at the centre of the salary cap breach. Andy Keogh, who was paid outside the salary cap through payments to his wife, drifted between Topor-Stanley & Antony Golec, received a pass and smartly curled a shot with his ill-gotten left foot past Bouzanis.

Off the pitch saw several disgraceful incidents from a handful of members of the New South Wales Police. During the first half a smoke flare was lit in the central RBB of bay 56. Witnessing this, a handful of officers standing on the far edge of bay 55 remarked to the effect that they should "go in and get everyone", made their way into bay 56 and began an 'investigation' that resulted in several members of the public being harassed, interrogated, shoved and ultimately, resulted in the police using an indiscriminate wave of pepper spray in a space containing dozens of law abiding citizens, many of whom were minors. In one case, spraying a young boy and causing him to be admitted to hospital.

With an toxic atmosphere building around the RBB, the leaders of the group decided to leave at half-time. Almost the entire north end was vacated, followed in hot pursuit by the Police. With the crowd outside still chanting, the police formed a riot line. Once again pepper spray was fired into the crowd at random, injuring dozens.

It is simply not good enough for police to respond to a single flare that hurt no-one by charging into the bay, creating disturbances and then targeting people at random with pepper spray. The 'response' from the Police that no-one was hurt is a pure lie.

This was the second occasion this season I wasn't able to watch the second half of a match because of police action. The first was on a much smaller scale, but weeks later this incident was on a scale not seen since August 2012 when the Sydney United supporters were attacked by riot police and dogs asa result of a single firecracker being let off.

All the people involved in the security at Wanderers matches need to go back to the drawing board, because the way things are going there will be at some stage a major injury created by their indiscriminate brutality. A flare is not reason to randomly attack people and pepper spray them at a football game. Nor is chanting outside the stadium any grounds for dousing an entire line of people with pepper spray.

    @Wendy.

Given the amount of police present for a low profile match (again) and the lack of any incidents recently I can't help but feel there was going to be a confrontation at some stage yesterday regardless of what instigated it. Yep, the flare was the switch the police needed but the way in which they went about 'finding' the perpetrator wreaked of a premeditated response to whatever incident could've happened yesterday.

I'm not an RBB regular, I happily sit in the West stand with my family normally and like I mentioned earlier had I not witnessed it I may have been skeptical but what happened felt like it was going to happen regardless of whether it was a flare or something else.

The pepper spraying was nowhere near the flare, nowhere near it.

A trusted person who has zero reason to lie who was right near the 4 onsie wearing cops between 54/55 before they went in heard their conversation on radio and quoted it to me verbatim after it happened. They hadn't found the flare ripper on CCTV, they just needed to get in and make a statement. There was zero reason for the capsicum spray. Seeing terrified kids being knocked over and dragged out by parents and random adults was disturbing. Seeing lloydys boy distressed well afterward was upsetting.

There is zero reason for the over the top police response. Unfortunately as football fans, and those of a club that gets targeted for anti social behaviour commentary all the time, the mud will land on us as a collective. The disgraceful overpolicing will not rate a mention.

The more I think about last night, the angrier I get and I'm the cruisiest Lebanese guy I know. Still shaking my head.

I'm not really into flares - but I did cheer when it went off last night, a weird involuntary reaction that surprised me in the moment. My 6yr nephew thought it was a fire and we had to reassure him it was 'fireworks', so there's that element to the whole drama of flares at matches. It can be scary for the younguns.

Anyway I digress, I wanted to comment on the overwhelming police presence at last nights match. I was confused/bemused by the amount of police there. I was trying to figure out what the concern was from their perspective - was it the presence of 10 glory fans? And I had to come to the conclusion that there wasn't a concern, it was about an agenda. The agenda of showing who's boss, the agenda of putting the fans in their place and the agenda of might is right. I'm a law abiding citizen (a bit boring I know), I don't really have an agenda myself to 'screw the pigs' etc...They've got a tough job sometimes, but really, is policing a Wanderers match up there manning a riot? Its never resembled in deed or intention say a G20 riot, so why behave like its one.

So if what I'm reading here from RBB members are true, and it certainly looks like (I am way down the other end of West Stand, so had no idea what was going on last night) the misplaced zeal and accompanying random violence from the police needs to be addressed by the Club. I hope they do something in the off season to get this autocratic approach from the police appropriately aligned to the spirit of the event. Its damn football match FFS.

Hopefully all the 'police' apologists enjoy watching average football in a silent near-empty stadium next season. Maybe the the riot squad can sing a song or 2 to fill the void. Not like they will have anything else to do. Anyone dropping litter next season, expect some pepper spray and a kicking. Cos that's ok.

It was proven last night when the core RBB troublemakers and their sheep spat the dummy after being caught out and walked out on their team, that there will always be true supporters who will fill the void. It was also proven last night from the side stands by the support they received, that these are the Wanderers supporters that the majority of fans would like to have representing them as active support. No one is indispensable and with a waiting list of supporters wanting to become members in RBB and other bays across Wanderland, this won't ever happen.

Off field dramas to one side, a sub 9k crowd is a pretty poor show for what is likely the last game at Wanderland for a big chunk of the squad :nono:

Not really considering it was Anzac day and alot of other sport events on and also the storm would have deterred people from coming.

At least it's over now and we can soon start the long off season we're Popa will bounce back next season interruption free.

We had no idea what was going on in the rbb, was thinking there was another hail storm coming but that doesn't seem the case now and media will probably beat it up which is a shame instead of action taken from what sounds like an over zealous police officers wishing they weren't at a wogball match on anzac day.

Thank **** this season is over.

if your in rbb u follow the capo. The ones that stayed are a discrace

If you stayed in the rbb after everyone left, please don't renew your ticket. Your a dog

Good on those that stayed. They showed their passion for the team and received plenty of support from both stands. Poor form turning on your fellow RBB supporters.

They are not my fellow rbb supporters.

My fellow rbb are the ones that walked out with the majority

You obviously don't watch santo Sam & Ed! You must sit close to me Wendy!

Even Santo Sam and Ed weren't original.

Parramatta Eels fans were wearing celery caps to games two years ago.

Wow. That was quite a "different" match day experience.

    • The noise in the Bavarian Beer Cafe when the hail was hammering the roof!

    • The young guys did very well, Golec and Kalmar less so, I am sorry to say. It is to the club's credit that they managed to build up A-League capable young players in as little as three years. Add Sotirio and Fofanah, and the future looks rather bright in this department.

    • I am yet to be convinced that Bouzanis has got what it takes.

    • Golgol looked great. What a comeback it could have been had he scored.

    • Bulut is not a team player. He constantly complains about his team mates not passing the ball to him, and yet he is guilty of the same. There seems to be a bit of a princess right underneath the surface.

    • The result: since losing the last derby I am not getting worked up on such minor technical details any longer. But when Poljak, maybe the most committed player in the team, missed the equalizer in the dying minutes, I thought "yep, that is a fitting end for this season".

    • The game meant a lot to those who played. Players sitting and lying on the grass, hanging heads, as if they'd lost a grand final.

    As for the other events:

    • As soon as I entered the ground I noticed more police than I expected for such a meaningless game.

    • Lloydy might have something to say about a certain book he saw being used by police. I let him elaborate on this if he cares to do so.

    • Two police officers kept patrolling the area between Bays 54 and 55. Once the smoky went off they moved towards Bay 56, and were soon followed by four men in blue. The rest is history.

    On a personal note:

I hope we'll never again witness the family-friendly/CCM-style active support of the second half. It is a matter of debate if the allegiances of those in the NT should primarily have been with the RBB, or the team. Those who stayed behind chose the latter, moved inwards from the terrace fringes to fill the void, and they did the best they could. However, had it not been for the culture the RBB has put in place over the last three years there would have been no chants at all.

Good riddance to S3, and R.I.P. If this was the price to pay for winning the ACL then that's fine with me. I am looking forward to wearing a new jersey with a gold star on it in S4.

Just watched replay. 2nd half atmosphere was like a marinors game dmixtaaa

Then perhaps maybe you and your PYRO mates can go and watch your beloved Syd Utd play Bonnyrigg White Eagles if the atmosphere is lacking and more important than the football, I'm sure there will be plenty of police there as well for you and your mates to intimidate. Atmosphere has lacked all season at Wanderland due to performances on the pitch...

The best atmosphere ever at Wanderland in our Semi Final of ACL vs FC Seoul. There was only about 7,000 die hards there and the roof was ripped off the stadium and it wasn't because some tosser ripped a flare, it was actually from what the team was doing on the pitch believe it or not.

^^ nothing to do with the conversation dmix but the acl semi had more than 17k from memory....

He might be thinking of the group of 16 game against Kawasaki. Those last 5 minutes were the loudest I've ever heard the stadium, and there was definitely fewer than 10k at that one.

Yes you are right I was mixed up with the Hiroshima game which was Shinji's last game, where Santa scored in the dying minutes to put us through to the quarters. Even then there was <11,000 pax

I'm not active, but Its a little dismaying to hear some the commentary about the active members who stayed and those who left. The Wanderers active members are an integral part of what we have at Wanderland, and I do hope they can all move forward and bring it for the first home game of season 4.

Nothing would dismiss those who try to divide than a united RBB standing shoulder to shoulder

One of the guys who was arrested at the start & handcuffed dropped his scarf.

I have it & would like to return it ASAP, does anyone know him - I didn't catch his name, the cops had a knee in the back of him while they were handcuffing him & people were yelling at the cops to ease up if that helps narrow it down.

No matter what is said in here, all the general public will see is what was shown on Nein news and that is the video of people swarming police outside the stadium, chanting in their faces, intimidating then getting sprayed. regardless of whatever else went on to get the situation to that point, that is what the vast majority will see on the news and what the RBB and Wanderers and the A-League will be remembered by in the final round of the 2015 season.

what a **** embarrassing way to end the season.

    What is ACAB?

I wasn't there on Saturday night but I do not blame anyone for returning to the RBB after half time.

After all, they are there to support their TEAM, not the RBB.

    All cops are..

Nothing to be gained by division.

Like I said earlier I hope that those that stayed didn't know what was going on.

The team always deserve our full support. Last time there was another issue - which was nothing on this scale - several of the players backed us. The standard you walk past etc. Sometimes a statement has to be made.

The team will be very different in a few years also but the fans will still be there. I'd much rather the fans are still there loud and proud and making noise than sitting down clapping quietly like the cops would love us to be.
