  • Phoenix Punished In Penrith

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers epic A-League drought was quenched on a stifling hot day as the Wanderers played and won their first ever competitive A-League match in Penrith.

On a day of firsts Nikita Rukaytsya scored his first ever goal for the club with a neat turn and powerful strike in the 18th minute, before Brendon Santalab sealed the game in stoppage time following neat work from Nick Kalmar.

The Wanderers bought double Asian Champions Matthew Spiranovic & Tomi Juric back into the first team squad, Juric playing his normal role up front and Spiranovic stepping into the holding midfield role.

Barely a quarter hour into the game and having dominated the early stages, the Wanderers turned their advantage on the pitch into a lead on the scoreboard. Labinot Haliti lobbed in a cross that Mateo Poljak smartly knocked down for Rukaytsya, his first touch put the ball in a perfect position, and on the turn the flying winger blasted a firebolt that was through Wellington keeper Glenn Moss before he get his hands up. Just minutes later it was Rukaytsya again in the action, Wellington failing to clear their lines, it fell inviting but he put a weak shot into the arms of Moss.

Wellington had few chances of their own, their best coming on the half-hour, a counter attack launched by Roy Krishna, Michael McGlinchey launching Nathan Burns on a mission to the edge of the Wanderers penalty area before receiving a backheel return ball. The tricky midfielder then ran past Brendan Hamill and beat Hamill's central defensive counterpart Topor-Stanley. Red & Black reinforcements arrived in the nick of time and between Poljak & Ante Covic they kept their clean sheet alive.

Sandwiched between that McGlinchey effort were long range strikes for Antony Golec, who had a superb game with Wellington's tactical setup giving him the freedom of the pitch, and Mark Bridge, who had the crowd gasping with his curling drive. Matthew Spiranovic joined in on the fun with his long drive that had Moss scrambling. Just before half-time Rukaytsya went off with an ankle injury.

Wellington came out in the second half looking to pressure the Wanderers, but their long balls produced little in the way of clean chances, their best hope being a denied penalty when Nathan Burns went to ground somewhat theatrically with 5 minutes of regulation time remaining.

As might be expected, with Wellington pressing for an equaliser, they opened themselves up at the back. In the first minute of stoppage time the Wanderers received a throw in, Kalmar driving down the line before he turned Andrew Durante inside out, he squared the ball along the edge of the 6 yard box, Santalab gratefully knocking it past Moss to seal the game.

With the pressure valve of their long streak without winning over, focus will turn to how well can Tony Popovic build up his current charges for an unlikely tilt at the top 6, and certainly for the upcoming defence of the Asian Champions League.

The Wanderers next game is against Newcastle Jets, in Newcastle, on Saturday the 14th of February, kick-off at 5:00PM.

The differences in the venues approach to hosting NRL games and football games is outrageous. No access to the the ground from normal access points was ridiculous especially in that heat, I saw people in wheelchairs being directed to the opposite end of where they needed to sit.

Once in the gates I purchased 2 bottles of water and nearly fell over when i was asked to pay $11.50..My question is why this treatment for us, because this is not the norm for panthers home games. It just makes me so mad when I see double standards and football fans being treated unfairly.

We should never do the Panfers thing again IMO and I live in the greater Penrith district,

I have given up with getting tickets in the ACTIVE bays for away games, simply because of the problems some of you have mentioned. This is an issue I feel could be correct simply between the clubs, FFA and ticketing authorities..Just make all ACTIVE areas GA, simple..The trouble and fights could all be avoided.

Game wise, great to see Ruka find the back of the DEEEEP nets, and Santas goal was some sweet icing..Now to put the Jets at the bottom of the table next week as week make our move on the table..

Just looking forward to the oportunity  to dish out some punishment for GA and ESFC..bring on that derby

Valentines day game..haha I can see some romantic plans involving a trip to Newcastle haha

I must have been watching a different game to some of you guys because I thought spira was ace. Won the ball repeatedly and controlled the tempo in midfield. With him there we actually retained possession - was like watching football and stuff.

Golec finds space out wide doesn't get dragged into the middle and gives covic and nts a comfortable ball to relieve pressure. He made a big difference

I'm with you on this one.

Correct me if im wrong but finals are virtually out of reach.

Going off last years table we need to win at least 11 of our last 13 or 14 games.

we need to win all 7 home games and at least 3 of the 6 away to have a chance. So really we are done but it is possible mathematically.

$5.50 for water, and ppl still wanting to sit in their ticketed seats in the RBB :smurfnono:

Had a dad and his 7 or so year old son pretty much arrive on kick-off and insist on sitting in their ticketed seats on the edge of 35. About 2 minutes in to the game they were nowhere to be seen... surely by now people realise what active support at a wanderers game involves

So on Extra Time tonight, Seb Hassett said that the turnstiles at Penrith stopped working when the lines to get in were still miles long, so the crowd is likely to have been much more than 12600.l

we were stuck in the line at the south end, after walking to the north gate which was on our tickets, to find it closed. The line was almost at Jamison rd, it was that long. Once we got to the front they stopped scanning tickets. Missed the start. :sorry:

I can confirm that our group of 7 tickets were just torn, not scanned.

This is the A-League - look at the results over the weekend - anything is possible.

it all depends on how the teams on the edge go... if melbourne heart and brisbane keep losing to the clubs up the top and we steal a win or 2 off them and a few of the other clubs then there is no reason why we aren't in with a shot.

win our 2 games in hand and we are only 6 points off. no use looking at previous years tables when the cut-off point is a mid-table finish, that could mean anything depending on how tight the league gets

    Pew pew pew pew

    You end up going Bradford*?
No, i went down to wollongong and sold my car for the price i wanted. Then with track work i got massively sunburnt in the ensuing hours before home.

i followed to game while lying paralysed under a fan.

Im so glad we won and by all accounts (and stats) we played well. I was worried when it was 1-0 and late in the game, figuring a draw was a big possibility. Happy for ruka, but why was he subbed so early?

Play like we did yesterday, and hope for some favors...

Beating ESFC at home will be our priority

Yesterday wasn't a season turning performance in my opinion, but it is a start and I am not going to be too critical after the shift that was put in and the heat and the fact we just needed a win via any means.

Need to kick on up in Newcastle.

Referring to the midfield (gaping creativity hole in there) and some of the general positioning in the second half, but I am not going to be critical as under the circumstances the 3 points were all that mattered this time.

Wasn't the best performance but I hope those 3 points will give a confidence boost to all involved.

I just hope the injuries aren't major and they recover well from playing in that heat.

Another win next week and it will put us in a state for the derby and the ACL

I haven't felt like this since the ACL win.

I'm currently at work in the office, my arms are feeling heavy (possible strained arm from celebrating Ruka's goal), voice is 50/50 (I'm sorry if I yelled at you to chant loud, it was the alco and the heat) and my head is thumping.

That's the feeling of a good Sunday out.

I'm also damn proud of the RBB, yesterday was horrific, that temperature took it right out of me so much that I threw up this morning.

We were in the stand directly behind the RBB, and I was amazed and proud of that performance. I was at a Crystal Palace game last  week sitting next the the HF, and I was blown away with how good we are in comparison.

What shits me is that if you go to the Big Day out, you get free water (to wash down your eckies)..WSW pay over $5 for water for putting that stunning performance that lets face it is the pride of the FFA, despite how they repackage the truth

I wandered around the south gate on arrival about 30 mins prior to kick off - queue was at least 200 metres long a 3 or 4 people wide and moving slow as buggery. So I went around the West side and the queue there was even longer and moving even slower! Plus it split both ways with one massive line winding across the field and another going right down the road all the way to the north entry.

I was just about to stop by the northern ticket box to congratulate them on their spectacular **** up of an event, when they apparently realised the error of their ways and opened the north gate.

Walked straight in with my boy, no ticket check at all! Had to laugh when they put up the crowd figure - they had no idea how many people where there. Stadium management at that ground couldn't find their own arse with both hands.

    Inaccurate crowd figure for sure.

I remembered in  last season's pre-season game at Penrith, they were also ripping up tickets.. Don't ticket scanners exist there!?

Spira was immense in midfield. Hammil is too good to be played out of position on the right, so he should continue to partner Topor in central defence. This was proved in our ACL run, so there is no worry there.

But Spira, just had so much time in the middle & that has been missing. It seemed to allow Poljak to have a more mobile role, while Spira just policed the middle of the pitch.

In regards to the match in full, i felt we started quite poorly, but from the goal onwards we dominated the half & were probably unlucky not to lead by more than 1-0 at the break. In the second half we were obviously under more pressure, but the way we dug deep & fought for the win was impressive.

    Onwards & upwards!!

I am yet to watch the replay, and possibly blinded by happiness from the win, but I didn't think we played that poorly. We actually played the ball on the ground instead of ridiculous long balls. It wasn't a clinical performance but we did not look hopeless like we have in other games this season.

I thought Spira and Poljak were both stand out performers. Also special commendations to Golec.

All in all, I'm v happy and can't wait for Saturday !

    • The guy is a professional footballer, even playing on a different side to his preferred, the concept of defending doesn’t change. He hardly looked like he was giving it a go. I think all too often we can be so lenient on mistakes made by players across the league. Let’s not forget that they are professionals, they get paid (a bloody decent amount) and should have the skillset required to atleast be able to do a job in a different to preferred position. It’s not like all age, where one week they are banging then in as a striker and then next they’ve got the gloves on as the regular keeper is away with the missus.
