  • Ref helps Sydney United to 2-1 victory over Wanderers.

    mack

An atrocious penalty decision followed by a retake call has gifted Sydney United a 2-1 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Controversy both on and off the field are the main stories to come out of the scrappy 2-1 loss.

Those who attended on a perfect night for football paid witness to an end to end struggle on the bumpy Edensor Park surface.

The off the pitch controversy reared in the early stages of the match when a single firecracker was let off in the Sydney United supporters corner. A massive police over-reaction followed. Police charged the group with batons, capsicum/pepper spray and police dogs and cleared the entire bay. Pictures from the match showed groups of police signing out members of the public, strangling them in chokeholds and blasting them with pepper spray. There was no reason at all for police to even be in the bay following that single firecracker and attacking the entire group with batons does not come close to 'necessary force'.

Looking from the viewpoint of a member of our active support, this is another reminder about the brutality, disdain and lack of respect the police and security have for active support. It also should be another example that any one person can create a situation where an entire platoon of police will charge and attack our supporter group. As a group we must remain vigilant to avoid giving the hired goons a reason to charge us with their batons and pepper spray and police dogs.

On the pitch the Wanderers conceded their first ever goal just before half-time. A United corner was not cleared by the Wanderers defenders, the ball bounced around the goal square and was turned in by Sydney United to give them the lead.

Kubi came on in the second half and again was explosive. His pace and direct running caused a lot of problems for the United defenders. Mark Bridge equalised for Western Sydney when the United keeper, who had been performing admirably all night, spilled a shot into his path. Bridge made no mistake with the simple tap-in.

The on-field controversy was a major blunder from the referee in awarding Sydney United a penalty when the game was evenly poised at 1-1. Tyson saved the penalty only to see the referee order a re-take. Tyson was unlucky on the second attempt as the ball squeezed past him to give United a 2-1 lead.

Wanderers pushed for a goal to draw the match but came up short. The referee again making a blunder as he failed to allocate any time added on despite multiple goals, the penalty decision and constant substitutions.

The Wanderers will feel both hard done by and disappointed at their effort on the night. Mooy again did a great job in midfield but on the whole the midfield lost the ball too many times when playing against a team at the level of Sydney United. The cohesion on the flanks was not quite together. Overlapping runs were either ignored or passes were made too late or too slowly. It is still quite early on in the pre-season but work will need to be done in addition to more signings.

I am quite impressed at the defensive work. Tactically the group appear nicely compact and keep their shape well. Topor-Stanley is dominant across the back 4, with Covic at the back the Wanderers look like they will be a resilient outfit when defending.

The RBB had a great night, the sound and numbers are really coming together. Several adhoc chants completed the evening for the supporters even if we went home disappointed with the referee ruining the match itself. It was also good to see the RBB sticking together at the end of the match.

The Wanderers next scheduled match is Friday the 31st of August against Melbourne Heart. The match will be at Oakes Oval, Lismore, in the far north of New South Wales.

Mooy and Kubi were too good. Who was the left back in the 1st half? bloke had no clue.

Number.12, white abed, the new German, can be forgiven for now due to jet lag etc. certainly got the feel for it as the half wore on

Number 12 the lb in the first half was the Brazilian left back who's been trailing with us. 11 was Zac Erich and number 9 was Williams on the team sheet but not sure who he was

I must say that was an impressive bunger. I was just thinking flares would be good, but that made everyone I was sitting with, jump up and pay attention! Do you reckon we can get some made up with WSW logos?

Boban - either your comments are a poor attempt at sarcasm or a failure to understand the simple principles of cause and effect. If you take flares, bungers or anything like that into a game it will bring the police or security down on the RBB. It will tarnish the reputations of the club, it's supporters and the league. I can't understand why people with your ideals are tolerated on this site. Do you want a club or not? Support actively, sing, chant, cheer, dance, bang drums - blow a bloody Vuvuzela if you really have to, but for god's sake take a mature look your approach otherwise you will hurt all of us.

No 11 and 9 were shocking. Better not sign them. Haliti abit selfish, Bridge as always useless. I have to say Mooy and No 8, i think it was Trifiro were good, they keep improving every game.

Really? I thought number 9 (we're talking about the right back correct?) was very solid. Stopped a number of runs down the flank with strong clean tackles and provided extra support when attacking. Number 11 had skills but needs development with his decision making.

Im personally happy that they lost. Sometimes you need a loss to be a reality check and work harder.

I didnt think there was much difference in the quality between SU and WSW. which is either a compliment to SU or a dig at WSW. thats the first game I've seen of them and it was not of a professional level. I certainly hope the next 5 signings are starting XI material because that side out there last night wont be competitive in the A-League.

Agree with Bejay, SU Fans were chanting Syd Croatia when they are Syd United

Also when the 1 finger flag came out that was what the media & Police were waiting for.

These so called SU Fans would not support them at any regular season games.

RBB Were well behaved & credit to you guys.

WSW Were poor but it was only a trial on a crap pitch.

Agree with Chilugal. No 9 was very solid and did provide a lot of runs into attack.

I tell you what, if WSW continue to play like that, I will be giving away family passes to Parramatta stadium. I know it's early days, but that was pathetic football.

+1, walk out now. If you arent going to support on our poor days, dont support us when we are playing well

If people are expecting instant on-field success and title contention in our first year, they are kidding themselves. A handful of months to put a team together and taking on established clubs...we have our work cut out for us. Its a long term project.

standard australian sport mentality....they show face in the good times only...not in the bad

and thats across every code...league, afl etc etc.

Its because sport in this country is a hobby and entertainment, not a way of life where your entire existence is on the line. So its understandable I guess.

More than I thought that were there tbh. I think the $15 entry fee kept many away. That's pretty steep for a pre-season match.

no way was that 3.5k! that looked lucky to be over 2k in my opinion

disappointing turnout really...seems like the wanderers need to tap into the fairfield/livo market more

remember the stadium holds 14k or something, crowd might have looked smaller in comparison to the larger stadium. I fully understand though BigDukes, I thought the crowd at nepean was about triple what was there last night.

From what I've seen Boban is a reasonable lad, I respect most of his opinions on here... I believe this to be heavy sarcasm

The pitch was horrible, and the 11 was shocking!! (Wasn't Tarek, was it?) I thought Caira did alright in the middle, much better than the Spartans game. Good seeing Kubi come off the bench, bit of excitement!!

No it wasn't Tarek, he was sitting near where I was. But I agree, that number 11 was shocking.

    omg its a girl hi

Not giving up that quickly, but I am also not going to torture myself if it is that ugly week in, week out.

Guess I'm just a sucker for punishment lol. Plan on sticking with them no matter how hard times get, will just give me more of a reason to focus on the chanting. I'll avert my eyes and watch the big screen when we score lol.

Being a supporter means you stick with your team through the good times and bad. If that's how you feel Boban hand it back and we;ll find someone more worthy of your membership.

Don't get your knickers in a knot, I was expressing my disappointment with what I saw on the field. I know enough about the game to know it's not going to happen on Week 4 of the pre season. I can assure you though if we can't pull it together and show some true promise, my membership next year will revert to a supporter membership and I will pick and choose what games I attend.

We are not talking about good times and bad, we are talking about watching good football. I honestly don't care where the club finishes this year as long as we try and play an attractive style of football. What I saw last night was pretty pathetic.

There are a lot of people on this forum, who just look to find the negative in anything written. It's OK, I have developed a pretty thick skin.

As to being worthy of membership mate, they are selling it. It is not some exclusive item I need to feel privileged to have. So far I have put my money where my mouth is.

Love coming on this thread, good for the amusements!

I also enjoy those that come on here and offer their 2 cents as to how they "won't buy a membership with crap football like that aye!" Such ignorance :xbop:

As to the game, I was quite disappointed I didn't get out to watch it. From the sounds of it there was actually no game on. But in all seriousness if you guys are struggling against Sydney United (dodgy pen or not), a team that shipped 4 against A.P.I.A on the weekend, then you have an incredibly long way to go. What formation was being played?
