  • Refs Take Centre Stage In Newy Draw

    mack

Two disallowed goals for the Wanderers and two handball calls saw the Wanderers robbed of all three points a cellar dweller battle in the Hunter.

The Wanderers were coming into this bottom of the table clash on the back of their first win, while their opponents Newcastle had lost to Brisbane 2-1. Tony Popovic elected for Yojiro Takahagi as his creative midfielder, while Matthew Spiranovic once again took position at holding midfield. Ex-Wanderers Daniel Mullen turned out for the Jets while the man who left Newcastle to come to Western Sydney, Sam Gallaway, did not make the match day squad.

The first big call of the afternoon came just after the half-hour. Nikita Rukavytsya cut inside onto his favoured left boot, launched a cross for Tomi Juric to flick on for Haliti who had made his run far too early and was a mile offside, his smart finish correctly ruled out for offside.

Right before the break Nikolai Topor-Stanley put Tomi Juric through on goal, the central defending striding into the attacking half before slotting a ball to the Asian Cup hero, who turned his marker and strode in on goal. After taking perhaps one touch too many his powerful blast from a narrow angle couldn't beat Jets custodian Ben Kennedy.

Nikita Rukavytsya scored his first goal for the club in Penrith and had a glorious chance to double his account on the hour. Takahagi played an impressive outside of the foot through ball that enticed Kennedy out of his goal, only for the pace of Rukavytsya to beat him all ends up. On the run and from a very tight angle his shot on the open goal was poor and didn't even hit the side netting.

The Wanderers were robbed of the opener by referee Lucien Lavadure with only 8 minutes of regulation time to play. After winning a corner, Shannon Cole swung in a superb corner and one that Kennedy completely misjudged, being put off balance by two of his own defenders, the ball deflected off the flapping hand of Kennedy, into Daniel Mullen (one of the Jets defenders who had blocked his keeper), and fell to the feet of Topor-Stanley who couldn't miss. Yet somehow Lavadure decided that Nick Kalmar had impeded someone in the Jets defence and chalked out the legitimate goal.

Moments the Wanderers finally took a deserved lead. Daniel Mullen getting his body tangled in the penalty area and handling the ball. Brendon Santalab made no mistake with his paneka penalty. His inventive goal celebration saw him borrow a camera from the assembled media throng before taking a few pictures of the travelling support.

Unfortunately for his side they were once again left ruing a defence lapse, this time as Lavadure decided that Antony Golec had deliberately handled the ball as a result of a shot which was smashed into his arms from a meter away. The atrocious call was yet another awful decision from an A-League referee, the quality of the referees in this league is a sorry state of affairs which shows no indication of improving with the likes of Lavadure, Ben Williams and co being allowed to make mistake after mistake with no punishment from the FFA. There are calls for full time referees, but handing these jokers in the middle highly paid full time contracts for such disastrous performances is throwing good money after bad.

Ki-Je Lee stepped up to take the ill-awarded penalty and made no mistake, sending the Jets fans home happy with their 1-1 draw, and the Wanderers supporters a long drive back to Sydney lamenting another brace of dropped points. Western Sydney dominated the match with more possession and shots but their poor finishing and naive decision to attack in the final minutes instead of going to the corner to close out the game cost them dearly.

The Wanderers next match is against Adelaide United, in Adelaide, on Saturday the 21st of February, kick-off 7:30PM Sydney time.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We need a new coach with new ideas. Hope they are attacking ideas. We have a team to compete. But using a defensive structure every single game is just outdated. Popa just dosent know how to read the game any more and his support staff are not helping him either. Love popa for what he has done but he is past his due date.

I honestly don't believe we need a new Manager. What we need is a technical coach to fix our ball skills because frankly, at the moment ,we aren't passing well, we aren't controlling well and as a consequence we can't keep possession. I don't understand to any real degree formation and tactics like many here, so I am happy to take advice on that. But from my very (admittedly amateur) assessment, our basic ball skills suck.

I'm no professional coach by any means and I agree our basic skill is not to standard. I think our confidence is rock bottom and only from my own experience playing, that when you aren't confident, your touch can go to ****. Having said that, I hold Popa somewhat responsible for that. If he can't motivate his players, than he has a hard task of getting a decent showing let alone a win. He is paid to be a motivator and direct his players, much like any manager. I don't see any motivation on the players faces or direction as to which way to play. We're bottom of the league and deserve to be after that performance.

We are supposed to be the fittest side in the league, why not apply pressure from the front? Why not play one holding midfielder and attack? Put the opposition on the back foot straight away. If we lose the ball, surely we can scramble and defend with the fit players we have.

Guess I'm just frustrated because we play the same every week, nothing changes except personnel. We miss Mooy more than people want to admit. Polenz also with his overlapping runs and delivery.

Back to football. We have the quality to play positive football why not use it We have quality that surpasses any other a league team my question is why bridge is amongst the leading all time goal scorers he isn't a left wing Juric is cock blocking everything positive in the final third as is rukavitsya constantly being offside Ffs teach him not to make runs to early and tomi please don't cock block takahagie in a fk again ffs

Everyone knows the spoon is theirs, it's just a matter of when.

RBB sounded great today, turned it into a home match for us.

Wait til you have a bad run they said, well here it is and we're still turning up so that last question has been answered emphatically.

Still, if anyone has a problem with the team then vote with your feet, I have friends waiting for memberships.

Just to clarify, their chant was about our team and the way we played, it was not about our supporters. I agree with you that the WSW supporters and the RBB in particular were top notch today. The on-field performance on the other hand lacked movement, decisiveness and and sharpness. Hence our current position on the table. The good news is that there is no relegation, so the only way is up! :)

that win was ours for the taking after Santa scored, this would have been the game gain more confidence leading to against Adelaide and leap frog those slack jawed yokels on the table with 2 games in hand.

In regards to Popa's formation... He has i the ACL played a 3-5-2 formation if you remembered that 2nd leg away against Guangzhou, he start Appiah in RWB FFS.

The other thing I remembered was when we were chasing the game against Sanfrecce, he changed the formation to 4-4-2 and Santa ended up scoring the winner.

No he didn't. He played his usual 4-2-3-1 with Cole, Topor, Hamill and Antony Golec as the back four. Cole was the right fullback and Kwabena was the right winger. Kwabena came off for Saba.

That 4-4-2 was about 12 minutes worth and it's about the only time we've played another formation for any meaningful period of time.

I thought we played well, we restricted their chances to that one unfortunate penalty.

We're holding the ball a lot better than usual, unfortunately the bad thing with that is that's because of Spiranovic and as a centre-back, he's not there for the incisive, cutting pass - he's there to tackle and keep the ball.

I'd suggest pairing Spiranovic with a ball-playing midfielder such as Kalmar. Also when Ruka was on the right, how many times did the ball go to him? Very few.

Takahagi wasn't dropping back into good positions to receive the ball, I felt - and so he wasn't really involved in the play. I like the idea of the cross-field lobbed ball, but not 95% of the time - because it's risky. We have Spiranovic who can pass, so I reckon tell Takahagi to drop back and play Juric in, or ball to feet and let him do his thing, or pass to the wings to set up for the crosses (which were very few).

Took the train up and down for that, and well... not super happy about it but I guess this is just a phase of supporting a team - anyway ACL next month, plus lots of home games. Should be good!

Someone needs to tell Popa that we need to release the handbrake when we are playing forward.  We give our opponents way too much time to set up to counter our attack.

This ^^^^^^ We are ***** lazy up top....the only player that pressures defenders is Santalab. Tomi just stands around as do some of the mids. Instead of going to meet the ball we sit back and wait for the defence to advance, which gives them the extra yards to go deep into attack. So much is wrong with the team mentality at the moment.

Our passing and transitional play is slow and clunky....there is no sharpness about our touches and that allows the defence to easily contain our play. With so many skillful players in the team it is an embarrasment that we must play long balls to attack. Surely we have good enough players to play on the ground???

Simple one two touches with pass and move football will sort us out....and can tackles in midfield be made ....was frustrating to see the Jets skip past us so easily in that part of the field.

I thought their japanese/korean player no.22 had a great game and caused us some headaches.

Positives were Kalmar being subbed on and Ruka moving into the left side during the 2nd half in which he provided 2 great chances. Spira once again was a class above everyone on both teams.

We created a few chances but was frustrating to see the calibre of players we have in the squad but being used in a shitehouse game plan.

Since popa used to sub Dino off for Gibbs and keep the team running the same way my only concern has been this unwillingness to change things. It was always going to come unstuck at some point. Some things gave me hope - that 10 minutes or so - the fact that we did change the approach play in s2 if not the formation... the wingers swapping sides this season... and i thought, ah, it's happening. .. But it hasn't.

    Just on Popa.

I was speaking to a coach who although not well known is very well respected in football circles.

He said Popas achievements are fantastic. Especially for an inexperienced coach.

You dont win an Asian Cup if ur a sh it coach.

In his opinion though he thinks where Popa struggles is a Plan B. Or an effective plan B.

It is all too predictable and slow. He said the challenge is how do you change things around when it isnt working and getting stale.

Something a young coach has to learn.
