Refs & VAR Overshadow Exciting Draw

    mack

Once again the use of the Video Assistant Referee system has claimed the bulk of attention as it intervened multiple times in the 2-2 draw between the Wanderers & Newcastle Jets tonight.

The Wanderers stuck to the same starting lineup as their big win over Wellington while Alvaro Cejudo returned from his long injury layoff to take the place of Jack Clisby on the bench. The home side had the better of the opening stages and if not for the VAR they would have opened the scoring after 3 minutes. Marcelo Carrusca played through Chris Ikonimidis and the cultured winger took a touch then beat Jack Duncan to slide the ball home. Until VAR spent 3 minutes reviewing inconclusive slow motion replays and ruled it out for a non called "offside".

Former Wanderers captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley gifted Oriol Riera the chance to open the scoring (again) from the penalty spot. Carrusca combined with the marquee striker to attempt a neat one-two passing movement but as Carrusca made his run into the penalty box he was clearly blocked by the big central defender, drawing the penalty & a yellow card. Riera rolled the ball along the turf into the side netting with Jack Duncan going the wrong way.

The lead lasted just 2 minutes into the second half as the Wanderers defence stood off from Dimi Petratos well inside the penalty area and he fired into the top corner with his left foot.

The VAR got involved again on shortly after an hour. As the Wanderers streamed into the Jets penalty area an underhit pass from Steven Lustica was intercepted by Topor-Stanley and his attempted clearance slammed into Carrusca from a meter away, and it ricocheted straight back into the hands of Topor-Stanley. Once again the VAR intervened to suggest a review from the referee, and with several minutes of slow motion replays from the man in the middle Riera headed to the spot again. Unlike the incident with Robbie Cornthwaite earlier in the season there was no second yellow for Topor-Stanley.

I personally don't believe that a deflection from that close of a distance at the speed the ball was travelling could ever be called a "deliberate" action as the rules require, but we've seen time and again that A-League referees seem to view that rule differently to most of the people watching. In his post-game interview, perhaps in a touch of facetiousness Ernie Merrick suggested he would now train his players to aim at the hands of defenders in the box.

Riera sent Duncan the wrong way again with another sublime penalty and it was 2-1. For less than a minute. Straight from the kickoff the Jets rolled down the field, Nabbout avoided an awful attempted tackle from Steven Lustica, he attempted an audacious outside of the right foot strike from the edge of the penalty area and despite being a shot that 99 times out of 100 would fly into the stands behind the goals this time it tore past Janjetovic into the far top corner for a goal that will end up as one of, if not, the goal of the season.

The VAR came to the rescue of the Wanderers after another inept decision from Peter Green as Jason Hoffman slammed into Janjetovic after the keeper had already put his hands on the ball. Hoffman missed the ball completely and his late shoulder barge forced the ball out into the back of the net. It was overturned not long after.

Both sides had chances to win the game, for the Wanderers it was unfortunate the best of them fell to fullback Josh Risdon, in particular one strong shot on target was palmed away by Duncan for a corner. Neither side would feel happy about the result, and Merrick went ballistic in his post-game interview against both Green and the VAR.

The Wanderers face Sydney FC in the last derby of the regular season on Sunday (good job Foxtel Federation Australia) February 25 at 6:30PM at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Had three HUGE chances to put them away in the end

    - Riera header miss

    - Risdon strike with Newcastle keeper fluke save being in the right place

    - cejudo open miss sitter

If only one had gone in..

I hope the boys carry this over to the  derby.

I taped and just watched the replay they have shown on the post game show on Fox shows the first goal disallowed for us was correct call - the angle shows him slight ahead

anyway yes we have some great chances to win it, but all in end a draw fair result

just a fantastic contest and the drama of the var contributed to it

nabbout goal absolutely outstanding you will be hard pressed to find a better goal scored across rhe world this weekend

good game bring on the smurfs I think I might actually pay those ****s the 50 bucks to go because on that performance we can give them a game

i dont know if this belongs here but if the wanderers want to get into e sports, forget fifa, no one cares about fifa but everyone loves overwatch and i happen to know the owners read everything i say and base their decisions on what i say so bring it on

The NTS penalty was a rough call, but we have seen A-League refs give penalties for less (the handball penalty that Carney won against a player raising their hands to say "I didn't touch the bastard" springs to mind) so I'm not going to lose much sleep over one going in our favour.

Entertaining game. Two fantastic goals from Newcastle, and our standard of play wasn't too shabby, too. I will need to watch a couple of games in a row to get a proper feel (you can only glean so much when listening to Paul Wade on the ABC), but I'm happy with where the team is headed. Hopefully Newcastle can keep it up, too, because the league needs another team with a strong but dormant fan base to play well and bring back the crowds.

Risdon picked up his 8th yellow and misses the derby.

    Loved the game excepting VAR.

None of the highlights show Brown's tackle on Roly. At first glance and from my distant view, I thought it was a red with a studs-up tackle to the calf. Can anyone review and let me know what you think?

Any means to reach a correct decision is fine by me so I'm content with the use of technology and time to this end. NTS is our former captain for a reason. How often did we concede penalties with his pull downs. The Newcastle goals were screamers and it's a privilege to be forced to a draw by such craft. Is he a "cultured winger " because he's Greek.  Damn he's fearlessly good as is the other Balkanite Vedran. The RBB newbies were pumping. Best fun I've had most season. We are so going to pump FC Seouless next week Derby.

    Lol, what is Ned smoking?

    Clear handball call.

Ned hates us. Those have been given all year, so suck it up Zelic, you dribbler.

Nabbout’s goal is probably one of the best I’ve seen. I and a few of the wanderers crowd ended up clapping it (not excessively-but enough to acknowledge the class). Other than that, whilst the VAR went our way, I hate it, as it has made inept, lazy refs even more so.

On the upside, our veracity in attack when we’re playing well is awesome- but we seem to have a long time curse with players that can’t finish.

The VAR is the worst thing to happen to football in my lifetime. That includes having to watch Graham Arnold as a player and listen to Robbie Slater as an "expert".

Have to agree, I have played and loved this game for years.....the VAR has been the worst thing to happen to the game.

It takes a lot of the enjoyment out, a big part of the game is goal celebration....you score a goal you want to celebrate, not wait 5min to see if it is going to stand and if you do celebrate your goal might be dissallowed.

The handball call against Topor was ridiculous. No idea how they figure that's deliberate

Why would you say the call was ridiculous?

    It was the correct call.

have to say concur with Matty and Merrick on that matter.

If that NTS was a handball players can just start kicking balls at arms and looking for pens.

If you have played football at any level you realise that s.hit happens. It happens im point 0.01 of a sec NTS clears the ball cannons back into him, WTF is he supposed to do?

The call benefiting us so not complaining, but it happens to Hamill or Twaite we are all blowing up guaranteed.

    Cejudo is a fraud.

For a marquee he offers nothing.

    i wouldn’t even say he’s a good foreigner.

The fact that the 2nd pen is being debated by fans of the team who benefited is clear enough proof that it shouldn't have been overturned (I'm 70/30 against).  If the VAR is not removing controversy what is the point of it? You're just holding up the game and ruining the spectacle for nothing.

This game was a great example of why it is not needed. They take one from us that they shouldn't have, give us one they shouldn't have, and then overturn one that the ref should have called.  We'll never know, but I feel like he would have called that foul on Vedran if he didn't have VAR to back him up.

Is the above worth losing the flow and beauty of the game, not to mention the passion when a goal goes in?  I'd have accepted a 2-3 loss rather than have to sit through VAR.

Also, how was there only 5 min time added on?  The 2 VARs took at least 3 min between them, there were 6 subs (4 before the 90 min mark) and Roly himself spent about half an hour rolling around on the ground, never mind other stoppages. That's another thing about VAR - there is no way that we are getting all that time back.  Is the ref supposed to add all the time BETWEEN the Topor incident and whe they finally called it, or does that time just not exist anymore?

The only thing the VAR is good for is spicing up the crowd when calls go against you, but we have always had the refs for that!

    Aaaany-way... the game...

If this is what life is gonna be like under Gombau then sign me up! Such an open game, loved it.

That Cejudo miss would have been such a good goal - slick passing and movement on the top of all the pressure we were applying. Just unlucky that most of our chances in that period fell to the Risdon.  Still, if the RB is getting those chances, that says something. I can't believe Risdon's last one was saved. Ridiculous fluke, on top of their fluke goal.

For that NTS call to be correct he has to have handled the ball deliberately. Assuming that he didn’t have time to move his hand after the deflection then to be deliberate he’d have to put his hand out then kick the ball into an opponent with the intent to bounce it back into his hand.

As much as I still admire him as a footballer I just don’t think he’s got that level of sophistication in him. Belting it into row z on the other hand...

I guess if we had to go down to any team (after starting well the draw feels like a loss) then I would prefer it be Newcastle. Loyal supporters and they have had such a hard run in recent years.

Great evening of entertainment slightly dampened by 2 knucklehead jets  fans sat in amongst wsw  members. Don't get it ...half empty stadium ,allocated away supporter section where they can shoot their  mouths off with thier own. Where I come from they wouldn't have just been told to sit down .they would have been murdered.

Other than that great evening. Spotless actually had a bit of soul....

Disappointed that we didn’t win but jets scored 2 great goals and credit to them they kept coming at us no bus parking in that game

Was a really good game most fun I’ve had for a while, and was good to see so many forumites before the game

Get rid of the var system and just keep goal line tech as its not working, peter green and the var guys in the box don't understand the game and have made it a joke.

Good game by us, we're unluck not to get a win but will settle with the draw up against them.

Nabbouts goal was beautiful, but we gave him to much room to get into a scoring position.

Onto next week with more var crap to come, hopefully we can last the esfc chopfest and get a result.

A couple of games ago we'd be hoping for a draw against the Jets, but it was an odd sensation of disappointment after the draw..

VAR on Chris Ikon was total bs...where was the clear error?

VAR on NTS..prob a rough call but hell after copping the debacle of Cornflakes red card who knows

VAR on Vedran/ Hoff...they got that one right imo

highlights for sure were their goals, and Merrick losing it after the game

....oh that we were also competitive
