Refs & VAR Overshadow Exciting Draw

    mack

Once again the use of the Video Assistant Referee system has claimed the bulk of attention as it intervened multiple times in the 2-2 draw between the Wanderers & Newcastle Jets tonight.

The Wanderers stuck to the same starting lineup as their big win over Wellington while Alvaro Cejudo returned from his long injury layoff to take the place of Jack Clisby on the bench. The home side had the better of the opening stages and if not for the VAR they would have opened the scoring after 3 minutes. Marcelo Carrusca played through Chris Ikonimidis and the cultured winger took a touch then beat Jack Duncan to slide the ball home. Until VAR spent 3 minutes reviewing inconclusive slow motion replays and ruled it out for a non called "offside".

Former Wanderers captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley gifted Oriol Riera the chance to open the scoring (again) from the penalty spot. Carrusca combined with the marquee striker to attempt a neat one-two passing movement but as Carrusca made his run into the penalty box he was clearly blocked by the big central defender, drawing the penalty & a yellow card. Riera rolled the ball along the turf into the side netting with Jack Duncan going the wrong way.

The lead lasted just 2 minutes into the second half as the Wanderers defence stood off from Dimi Petratos well inside the penalty area and he fired into the top corner with his left foot.

The VAR got involved again on shortly after an hour. As the Wanderers streamed into the Jets penalty area an underhit pass from Steven Lustica was intercepted by Topor-Stanley and his attempted clearance slammed into Carrusca from a meter away, and it ricocheted straight back into the hands of Topor-Stanley. Once again the VAR intervened to suggest a review from the referee, and with several minutes of slow motion replays from the man in the middle Riera headed to the spot again. Unlike the incident with Robbie Cornthwaite earlier in the season there was no second yellow for Topor-Stanley.

I personally don't believe that a deflection from that close of a distance at the speed the ball was travelling could ever be called a "deliberate" action as the rules require, but we've seen time and again that A-League referees seem to view that rule differently to most of the people watching. In his post-game interview, perhaps in a touch of facetiousness Ernie Merrick suggested he would now train his players to aim at the hands of defenders in the box.

Riera sent Duncan the wrong way again with another sublime penalty and it was 2-1. For less than a minute. Straight from the kickoff the Jets rolled down the field, Nabbout avoided an awful attempted tackle from Steven Lustica, he attempted an audacious outside of the right foot strike from the edge of the penalty area and despite being a shot that 99 times out of 100 would fly into the stands behind the goals this time it tore past Janjetovic into the far top corner for a goal that will end up as one of, if not, the goal of the season.

The VAR came to the rescue of the Wanderers after another inept decision from Peter Green as Jason Hoffman slammed into Janjetovic after the keeper had already put his hands on the ball. Hoffman missed the ball completely and his late shoulder barge forced the ball out into the back of the net. It was overturned not long after.

Both sides had chances to win the game, for the Wanderers it was unfortunate the best of them fell to fullback Josh Risdon, in particular one strong shot on target was palmed away by Duncan for a corner. Neither side would feel happy about the result, and Merrick went ballistic in his post-game interview against both Green and the VAR.

The Wanderers face Sydney FC in the last derby of the regular season on Sunday (good job Foxtel Federation Australia) February 25 at 6:30PM at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Now that I reflect on it Football eclipses VAR. Newcastle finally traveled with numbers. WST made their presence felt as did the RBB. The call and response veto was nearly accidentally lifted. The on field biff was on. They had two wonderstrikes whilst our best ever striker cooly slotted two pens. The missing link were those supporters at home nursing grudges eating pizza paying Foxtel with paid up membership cards in their bedside drawers.

Risdon picked up his 8th yellow and misses the derby.

    Loved the game excepting VAR.

None of the highlights show Brown's tackle on Roly. At first glance and from my distant view, I thought it was a red with a studs-up tackle to the calf. Can anyone review and let me know what you think?

That's a big loss, he hasn't been at his best but he's been getting better, and he's been getting into great positions. Who's gonna play there, baby Baccus? I wouldn't wanna move Hamill out of CB.

Haven't seen that incident again but at the ground it looked like a horrible challenge.

Anyway, this is the first time this season where we can genuinely say that we can beat any team on their day. A draw was probably a fair result but we created a ton of chances against a team way ahead of us on the table. Promising signs.

Chris Herd played RB for the Socceroos.

Expect Baccus Jnr at RB tho with Herd on the Bench. Baccus Jnr played RB for the Olyroos

The VAR is the worst thing to happen to football in my lifetime. That includes having to watch Graham Arnold as a player and listen to Robbie Slater as an "expert".

The VAR is turning from the intention of getting howlers, like a ball crossing the line, correct into  the joke that NRL is where videos account for micrometres. To call our first goal off side is laughable. But it evened out with Newcastle getting ripped off. VAR should be played at full speed, at different angles once and if a decision can't be made within two seconds then refs call stands and get on with the game. But Grhama Arnold? I liked him as a player :)

Imagine if football didn't have this. The rich, wonderful patchwork that is football history would be so much poorer.

Sure, a few Poms might disagree, but English near misses are just one magical part of football culture.

Anyway,  deep down inside they love to hate Diego.

What is this veto you speak of?

As for the stay at home pizza eaters, stuff em the important people are there. I’m past caring if fair weather fans show, I’ll be at every home game as will the fellow diehards

Why would you say the call was ridiculous?

    It was the correct call.

I wonder if you would feel that way had the decision been against Hamill rather than NTS

Have to agree, I have played and loved this game for years.....the VAR has been the worst thing to happen to the game.

It takes a lot of the enjoyment out, a big part of the game is goal celebration....you score a goal you want to celebrate, not wait 5min to see if it is going to stand and if you do celebrate your goal might be dissallowed.

Couldn't agree more!  Take the VAR out of this game, and what are we left with?  The Ikonomidis goal would have stood, as would the Janjetovic "own goal", while the second NTS penalty would not have been awarded.  Overall result, a 3 - 2 win to Newcastle.  Posts on this Forum would then be about a highly entertaining game,  Wanderers improving performance (not a single "Gombau out" comment to be seen), the number of chances we created but missed, Janjetovic's great saves, particularly in the first half, the Nabbout screamer, perhaps Duncan's sore neck from watching our shots soar over the bar, and our outrage that Janjetovic;s "own goal" should have been allowed.  Instead the majority  of posts are all about the VAR.  Use it for goal line decisions only, let the game flow, and leave the controversial decisions for discussion at the bar and in the forums after the game.

    Newcastle saying they were unlucky.

They were lucky to get the draw, they weren't the best team out there last night.

We were sat three rows up from those dickwads. One got up and made the shhh motion to us when Nabbout scored his goal. I thought he might get thumped the and then. They were deliberately winding us up. I yelled, 'get a haircut' at him. That told him :D

Would take away fans **** stirring over a bunch of our own knuckle head fans who have no clue about the game, whinge, carry on and bag our own players all game. Not even Messi could satisfy their expectations.

on the game though, loved it. Good game on the park, in stands we were getting fored up for it stadium wide, var sucked but it was fun cheering them on when they went our way haha.

draw against the team that on there day is on par with Sydney is a great result.

Felt both newy’s goals came after heated moments against them.

Vedran v Roy resulted in a goal as did our second pen.

Lustica and Bridge didnt offer enough to last that long on the pitch.

I thought Gombau was going to sub Cejudo for Lustica, not Carrusca.

For everyone having a tiddle about the handball not being deliberate, roll the tape on nearly every time the ball contacts an arm this season. If you want consistency, then it was a penalty - they have been blowing them for fingernails all year.

Agree, the handball interpretation has been consistently **** all season.

If we’re talking consistency then NTS would have got booked for the handball like Cornthwaite against Adelaide and he would have been sent off.

Interesting game last night - I came in expecting not much and was pleasantly surprised. Good result for us, shame about the two goals we shipped but 99 times out of 100, at least one of those shots miss

VAR ruined it though - and the "No Goal" graphic when Hoffman's barge into Janjetovic ended up in the back of the net? I felt like I was watching Big Bash League

    Get rid of it.

Coulda been worse... Would have been nicer if we scored a "proper" goal.. :-)

We had an obnoxiously loud Jets supporter next to us in a members only area.. How the F$%k does that happen..??

and what is the go with the big screen and the 1970's score font and no game time.???

The thing with hand ball penalties is yes it may be un-intentional, but most fouls in football are accidents that disadvantaged the other side, and thats why a foul is blown but no card issued.

so if a ball is headed in a dangerous area in the penalty area but obstructed by a accidental hand ball then yes its a penalty. Thats my take on it all and the most obvious definition.

Harsh i know, but when we also recieve penalties for players getting tripped whilst running the ball over the sideline or running away from goal its hardly the craziest rule in football, perhaps it could be an indirect free kick in the box?

Not at all, I'd accept it.

What's the justification for it to not be a handball?

That a player kicking a ball to make a clearance, hitting an opposition player 1m away and it instantly rebounding straight into his hand should not be considered a "deliberate" handball.

For justification  for it not to be a handball, I'd refer you to the Australian Four Four Two website and the article written by Adrian Deans, "When Will Refs and Commentators Learn the Rules?"  He also has an interesting take on the Hoffman challenge on Janjetovic and the resulting disallowed goal.

Rgeardless if it is deliberate or not deliberate, would you say it was the correct call? The position of NTS' hand was unnatural.
