    Riera Roars Against Brisbane

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have kept their A-League finals hopes alive with a 3-0 thumping of a listless Brisbane Roar tonight at the Olympic Stadium, Homebush.

With Brisbane knowing a win would see them all but secure the 6th place in the finals their supporters would have been shocked at how poor their effort was. In just minutes the Wanderers had the opening goal. After some early pressure, Marcelo Carrusca won a foul deep in the corner, he took the resulting free kick and fired into the top of the penalty box. Oriol Riera met the cross with a thumping header that burst the back of the net. Alvaro Cejudo should have doubled the scoring a few minutes later when he was found by a Josh Risdon cut-back, but the marquee winger couldn't get past the keeper.

15 minutes in and Riera had his second and the Wanderers a big advantage. Chris Ikonomidis turned back onto his left foot, delivered a sumptuous cross that Riera met powerfully, Jamie Young pulled off a miracle save to keep the ball out of the net but all he managed was to drop the ball on the line for Riera tracking in on his shot to poke it over the goal line.

The 39th minute saw the Wanderers take a commanding lead with Ikonomidis going from provider to scorer. Riera was unlucky to not secure a hat-trick with Risdon firing across the face of goal with only perhaps a slight touch by a defender taking it off Riera's toes and preventing a tap in. Llorente ran down the ball, he bent in a cross with the outside of his foot that Ikonomidis attacked to knock it home.

With changed in the second half Brisbane were slightly better than in the first half but were completely outplayed by the Wanderers, as they peppered Young's goal again. It looked like the Roar had finally put a goal on the board in the 81st minute with a tap-in at the back post for Massimo Maccarone that was eventually overturned by VAR as Brett Holman was in an offside position then clearly interfered with the play.

The 6th place position is far from settled but the Wanderers will know what needs to be done next Sunday. Unlike most football competitions, the A-League does not have simultaneous kickoffs, with Perth and Brisbane both a point behind the Wanderers the result of their match on Saturday night will be vital, and should either side take all 3 points it will mean the Wanderers must defeat Adelaide.

Roar player(s) knew their season was over before they alighted from the team bus.

Holman was the only positive for them.

Mum: "look at the Roar players in orange. They look like penguins".

    Me: "huh?"

Mum: "You know the Penguin paperbacks in orange".

    Riera. More Popavic deadwood.

How about Roly though. Really lived up to the hype after Popa signed him.

    Riera.

    The Catalonian Cahill.

Will be devastated if he leaves end of season. We need to build a team around this guys head.

So if we scrape in the 6, we would go away to Melbourne City in the first week of the finals.

if we keep gombau i hope any of the gombau out vultures dont celebrate any success we have under him, on the match we just dominated, obviously the atmosphere was dire

lets look at popa's signing rate for every ono there is abut 3 or 4 players who were complete garbage, not a good strike rate

The three grand finals in 5 wasn’t a bad a strike rate (winning them less so)

i do agree with that, popa was a great coach for signing players who were not the best players and getting them at their best but only if their personality type fit his(season 1 we sign a team full of rejects and win the premiership) but apart from a few masterstrokes he has never signed the best players tbh

I’d rather win stuff than “sign best players” admittedly the two are often related.

Anyhow there is enough talent in this year’s squad (including what Gombau added to it) that a top 6 should be minimum achievement. Hopefully we will get there as somebody will one day show how stupid a top 6 system is by winning from it might as well be us

Cejudo was excellent first half and not the dud he’s has been written off as. We have a decent front four but there is lot on the Bacci

Smugly sat there last night and thought "where the bloody hell has this been all season?", we have put three/four good halves together all season and that only only for me, no more.

About time Cejudo starting paying back his contract, been too much of a sicknote and under performer so far, leave Iko on for the full 90 if possible for me, Hamill is playing his best football so far for me, cant fault his commitment.

The Baccus bros and carrusca looked balanced last night, right blend of aggression , guile and attacking nous for a change.

Dare i say feeling quite optimistic now, but beware we have been here before !

big baccus was back to 2017 form. still reckon he is a quality player that can really help us win games despite his stupid dummy spit mid season. if he and gombau have sorted out whatever was the issue I hope he stays on next season. aside from everything else he is a western sydney product and probably our best current shot at having a local player in for the long term to take the torch from bridge in that regard.

no doubt it will be released next week that he has signed with newy :(

Cheer up, it’s a win keeps interest in season another week

The promising thing was the front four clicking

    Feed Oriol he will score!

Well done Popa and Foxe for winning last night

As apparently being the manager for 20 rounds has no impact on results

I think it is absolutely no coincidence that we have looked much better since Roly has been out and big Baccus has been back.

We looked a lot better with Baccus brothers in midfield. But still a few worries in defence. Adelaide will be better, if we win at least we earned that finals spot

Our ability to beat less capable teams than us needs to be acknowledged. That this should make us dizzy with success is drunken stupor. Scraping into the six means just that. We'll look at the ankles of the top four.

I enjoyed watching that on a stream. Riera is god. Cejudo too when he can be arsed.

There's been matches this season where we played like Brisbane, we played well but there were noticeable issues in defence let's be honest.

Anyway Riera's first header was world class, if he can do things like that with an ordinary team around him imagine next season when we have a few less weaknesses.

    I'm excited.

With the likes of Fitzgerald crossing to him? I see more frustration

Issue has been quality of crossing to him  in part due to players we have had playing but also our tatics haven’t suited him.

We now have plenty of people who can deliver a decent ball to him

    - Cejedu carrusca and Ikonwij

    - Risdon and Llorente as full backs

a better late than never run of form from Cejudo could be the key to us causing an upset or two in the finals

The main worry is what we do when we don’t have the ball. A lot will be on Bacci to close down opposition teams
