  • Roar Gifted Three Points In Brisbane

    mack

Despite a chance to go 5 points clear on top of the A-League, the Wanderers elected instead to hand one of their title rivals all three points with a display of utter incompetence.

Brisbane opened the scoring 4 minutes in after absorbing pressure for the opening exchanges. Jamie McClaren continued his scoring run, Hingert broke down the right flank with Sotirio failing to track back, his cut back found Maclaren and his attempt squeezed underneath Liam Reddy as Brendan Hamill got caught ball watching. Thankfully for the visitor's, even with the Roar dominating the play, they went into the break just a goal down.

It took all the way until the 74th minute before the Wanderers even looked like scoring, as Tony Popovic elected not to make early subs, his first one, Santalab was put through on goal by Mitch Nichols, the striker being cut down by Michael Theo the Roar keeper, and despite the clear goal scoring opportunity only being punished with a yellow card. Andreu stepped up for the penalty shot and managed to beat Theo down the middle.

4 minutes later it looked like the Wanderers were going to storm clear at the top as Romeo Castelen waltzed through a sea of Roar defenders, a heavy touch was beneficial in that it kept the ball out of a desperate lunge by Bowles, before his shot fired under Theo.

In the 81st minute the Wanderers lead, and their grip on the Premiership had evaporated. Another awful attempt at defending by Hamill saw Maclaren ghost in unmarked at the near post to slice it past Reddy. Petratos rubbed salt into the wounds as Henrique took advantage of an abysmal sideways attempted pass from Dimas, playing in Petratos who slotted it home for 3-2.

A score of 4-2 looked more likely that 3-3, and the introduction of Matt Sim & Kearyn Baccus far too late did nothing to change the situation. Substitutions coming far too late has become something of a trend for Tony Popovic, and the ongoing selection of the useless Jaushua Sotirio is more and more baffling after every week where he fails to perform. A game that could have cemented a spot at the top of the table was not the time to experiment with Mebrahtu playing upfront in his first start ever, nor was it the time to throw Matt Sim into the squad. A massive improvement is needed for the club to have any hope of winning either of the trophies on offer at the end of the season.

Did Santa get his 5th yellow and is missing in Newcastle? If so I really hope that Bridgey and Dario will be back.

It's gone up to 8 yellows to be suspended.

Newcastle away, humid conditions and 5pm kick off...

    Perfect conditions for another upset

Bro.. do you have any spot of positivity or is every post negatively geared?

Yeah you're right, those last minute derby defeats and plethora of missed chances have left me sour as ****.

    I'll get over it but.

I'm just so glad our team doesn't have the positivity which you continue to dribble out every week...   :smurfnono:

Tell us all about Lachlan Scott Taurus and can we promote him into the squad

Well he's scored 11 goals in the last 5 games. 4 of them those games were pre-season matches but still It's quite impressive. The question is would I give him a run in the A-League? Sure...but not this season. When when I give him a shot? If we secure our ACL spot then I would give him a shot because we can have more reserves.

Also. You have to admit, We as a club have a massive bright future ahead of us. Especially when they announced the other scores from the other grades this week:

    NPL WSW 6-0 Spirit FC

    20s WSW 6-1 Spirit

    18s WSW 3-2 Spirit

    16s WSW 5-1 Parramatta FC

    15s WSW 8-1 Parra

    14s WSW 2-0 Parra

    13s WSW 8-2 Parra

But we're playing Sotirio and mehbratu who between them have the goal threat of a sack of potatoes. Chuck the kid on ffs. We don't find a strike threat and we simply won't win anything.

Popa just isn't the type of coach to throw a youngster in though.

He'll probably be formulating plans for the kid next season though, bring him through like an Aspro

We have had several juniors that just aren't up to it though.

Fofanah, Alessi - the list does go on.

I think Scott could be something really rare and special though.

My take on the game , is that we didn't have a leader on the pitch ( difficult to make an accurate comment from the armchair , but have been to plenty of games this season) no one barking out the orders .

The mid field seem reluctant to track back & chase  when possession is lost or given up cheaply.

    Cheers Howie.

I personally will be livid if we can't knock over Newcastle.  :xmad:

    But we will though.  ;)

Haven't read entire thread but saw these in the first 2 pages..

    GTFO Sim.

Can't blame him. Bought on with 5 minutes left after the other players have thrown the game away.

Blame Hamill, Neville, Dimas, Sotirio & Popa for not using all three subs at half time or earlier.

Blame Jamo over some of those above. He's been shocking the past month. All goals v Bris were him getting beaten.

Anyone tell me WTF was with Dimas' wayward pass that led to the winner ? Dumb move or match fixing ?

Seems completely out of character for someone with his pedigree and at the worst of times.

He was getting kicked and harried before he passed it. He put up his arms as soon as he released his pass indicating he thought he was getting fouled the entire time. Probably should have went down.

First goal was Hamill forgetting to track/mark his man Jamo getting beaten before the cross was even given. Second goal was Hamill forgetting to track/mark his man Jamo giving Carona acres of space to put the ball into the box with a half hearted attempt to block. Third goal was Jamo getting beaten by Petratos to slot it home. So, if Popa had listened to me and played Aspro like I told him to we would have won 2-1

Fixed. Jamo was in the vicinity for all 3 goals. Beaten on all occasions. I wouldn't blame Hamill solely for them all. Everything came down the left side. They're both at fault.

Yeah agree with above about Jamo, except maybe the last goal. Should he have been that far upfield? Hard to say without knowing his instructions.

Jamo has definitely been average for the last month or so. Even before that I'd say that he spent too much time racing back to get into position. Only his pace kept him from having the "Wellington performance" earlier.

Hamill showed no desire to cut out the crosses though.

Still, we were down 3 experienced players at a ground not many people win at. Shouldn't have lost but it's not the end of the world as some are suggesting. Fate still in our own hands.

We played 2nd place away from home and did well with no Marques on the pitch and 2 more starting 11 out as well ! We have a decent run home with fixtures and roar and Adelaide both have very hard games coming up ! We can finish first still it's not the end of the world . My prediction is We will lift the trophy over in Wellington on round 27 in front of the traveling rbb tour ;)

Wasn't the first time Dimas has made a wayward pass across goal. I distinctly remember him doing it at Parra against the Smurfs. Still a great player, but I guess that shows the difference between a Barca academy player who didn't quite make it & Xavi.

    • Best shown by a chance Toure had when an Indonesian player had fallen over, he had a simple ball about 10 meters that would have put one of our attackers clean through for a one on one. He over-hit it and ruined the chance. Also falling for the same old Asian team diving & time wasting, by giving away stupid fouls to let them fall over and sit on the ground for minutes. 11 minutes stoppage time is probably half what it deserved.
    • Yet again, a failure of pace and power football over technically skilled football in on display in the Olyroos vs Indonesia.  We need to develop skills over pace at all levels
    • Milanovic & Brook should have been on the next flight home at half-time.
