  • Roar Loss Extends Winless Streak To 7

    mack

Josep Gombau's first home game as official Wanderers manager resulted in a dismal 2-0 loss to a clinical Brisbane Roar at a dreary, rain soaked Olympic stadium at Homebush tonight.

After a day of pouring rain & storms and with their side unable to win in the last 6 game it was only the diehards who showed up in Homebush. They should have been rewarded with a goal from marquee Oriol Riera after just 5 minutes. Raul Llorente attacked down the left flank and crossed a wonderful ball to the 6 yard box at the near post. Riera met it strongly with a bullet header that flew well wide. 10 minutes later he blasted a 20 yard effort wide, and it was to be the last action for the striker and may have been the causal factor for his substitution not long after with a hamstring strain. The injury toll doubled in the 35th minute with winger Jaushua Sotirio limping off the field with another probable hamstring injury.

The Wanderers attack was another in a long line of games of shuffling sideways & backwards with no penetration, and with their first shot on target Brisbane Roar punished the home side to take the lead. With the Wanderers unable to clear their lines, Eric Bautheac nodded the ball down to the advantage of Massimo Maccarone who swivelled and laced a left foot half-volley past Janjetovic.

Ivan Franjic took advantage of static defending to score a goal with his first touch of the evening. The substitute defender cut back on his left foot & shot a curling strike back across goal, arcing over the outstretched hand of Janjetovic and dropping into the side netting. Defenders Llorente & Jack Clisby were caught cold, static & did little but watch him aim up on goal.

Western Sydney were toothless in attack, sitting back with no urgency, passing sideways & backwards over and over again. The 56% to 44% possession advantage meant little when the home side only managed 3 shots on target and conceded two goals with the only two shots their opposition put on target. Josep Gombau has a lot of work to do to salvage the season, and with the 2nd Sydney Derby coming up the Wanderers could be inching close to a double digit number of games without a win and losing touch with the top 6.

Riera will go back to Europe in January transfer , bad blood between Gombau and Riera , highly likely not to play another game, nothing wrong with him !!!!

Will be huge if true but wasn’t it spotty who was Nico’s cousin from Argentina or was that another bloke?

I’m sorry but as a professional you don’t just walk off the field. If he has tweaked his hamstring, what’s the point in playing on & making it worse?

Geez I'd love to confirm who's looking after the wsw account at the moment (think it might be McCann from those comp survey's). Seeing our guys on Instagram today on a boat on the  harbour lapping up the sunshine, care free and not lame in an ice bath. Talk about about poor timing for supporters.

That is one thing that has nagged at me a little with our imports in recent years. Seem too interested in seeing the sights around Sydney, then representing the club and region. Sometimes I wish we would just put in a whole bunch of local players. They get how we want them to play.

Going out on a limb here mate, but I reckon Josep has sussed out and  leaned on some holiday makers, hence some discord.

So dumb. Could have been in the World Cup playoffs team if he’d been bossing the midfield in the A-League.

I don’t get some of these players, it’s like they don’t care about playing for their country.

That’s exactly it, they don’t care. Quick pay day is what it’s all about.

I think I spent more time on trains to/from the game than at the actual game.

I still think we have a good enough core...Risdon Cornflakes and Thwaite is as good a defence as any in the league, Herd makes a big difference to the midfield, and Cejudo showed his skill getting around people, he should probably play on the wing. Unfortunately our depth isn't looking so great, so when one of those big players is missing the difference is huge. Riera gets into great positions, also excellent setting others up with his feet, he's missed a few chances of late but just needs one to go in and I think he'll go on a roll again.

I'm not all doom & gloom yet, we dominated the first 30 mins and should really have been at least 1-0 up, but in classic Wanderers fashion we let in a goal on half-time and I think we all knew how it was going to end then.

The bigger problem for me is that we have no home ground, really. It's a huge disadvantage and tbh I wouldn't mind if sat out the a-league until our new stadium was built. The atmosphere at Parra gave the boys an extra gear all the time and it's just not gonna happen at Homebush.

there was a recording around the stadium which said if you see anything suspicious then contact the police, i saw santalab trying to hide most of the match so i reported him to the police

I thought he tried to attract attention on a couple of occasions,  But then again, he may just have been appealing for a penalty

Sad that you felt compelled to find your voice here under these circumstances Matto.

Like everyone else, I don't know what can be done to turn things around this season. It's a combination of contributing factors, no doubt that's got us here...and it will take a combination of factors to pick things up and reverse out fortunes...whenever that might occur.

We all knew losing Parra was going to hit us hard...I didn't realize how hard.

About the only comfort I can find atm is that this little community is still here and we share the same feelings.

    :(:(

Too many supporters giving up too soon.  Yes, Saturday was woeful.  For the first time since Year 1, my two grandsons wanted to leave before full time.  But take heart.  It took Gombau a lot more than three games to turn Adelaide around.

Funny thing is, if our game went ahead against Wellington, (I’d say we would’ve won it) we’d be sitting 5/6th regardless of the weekends result. Again, says more about the A-League really.

That was the worst part of Saturday, just when you thought the worst part was over when the final whistle went, Sydney Trains happened.

A signal failure at Ashfield several hours before kickoff plus additional signal problems / drivers cautiously slowing down for the showers after the game

Herd will steady the ship. Roly needs to start putting in. Sotirio out is a blessing, his popularity amongst the management amazes. His final ball is awful. even the goals he has scored have been mishit. Jumpei is just as bad, no final product. He is not a 50% Romeo.

If Smurfs control the midfield then we are gone because Bobo, Bosque etc will take the chances they create. Our lack of a No.10 playmaker is a massive problem. We just go back and across and back again and eventually lump it in the mixer hoping for the best. Carusca would have done a job. Maybe we have to cease the tikka-takka and revert to ACL type, hard to beat, get a foot in, fight for every ball and hope to nick one. Be obdurate. We don't have the players for fancy-pants football and if Oreo is out we hardly have a striker anyway.

Whats with the Riera shite?? He did his hammy, get over it.

On a positive note!!! Sotirio is also out! why are we all not celebrating!!??

Did his hammy, fair enough, prob have been guilty of being too critical, but looked a bit strange and can still tell all not great between him and the gaffer.

Agree, but signing Gombau was a pretty obvious statement to stick with the project unfortunately. re-Sotirio, Gombau obviously loves an outlet player, esspecially one that ens in "irio". He had it with Cirio and now hes trying it out with Sotirio!! Problem is Sotirio is worse then a headless chook.

IMO the best way forward is to start bringing through some hungry youth and get the older guys more hungry. I look at the Jets, Perth and CCM and theres some exciting talent coming through.

I'd like to think our defence is decent but we haven't kept one clean sheet this season and that includes a 10 man Victory and Blacktown. Meaning we have to always at least score 2 to win any game and that is a step too far it seems
