  • Roar Loss Extends Winless Streak To 7

    mack

Josep Gombau's first home game as official Wanderers manager resulted in a dismal 2-0 loss to a clinical Brisbane Roar at a dreary, rain soaked Olympic stadium at Homebush tonight.

After a day of pouring rain & storms and with their side unable to win in the last 6 game it was only the diehards who showed up in Homebush. They should have been rewarded with a goal from marquee Oriol Riera after just 5 minutes. Raul Llorente attacked down the left flank and crossed a wonderful ball to the 6 yard box at the near post. Riera met it strongly with a bullet header that flew well wide. 10 minutes later he blasted a 20 yard effort wide, and it was to be the last action for the striker and may have been the causal factor for his substitution not long after with a hamstring strain. The injury toll doubled in the 35th minute with winger Jaushua Sotirio limping off the field with another probable hamstring injury.

The Wanderers attack was another in a long line of games of shuffling sideways & backwards with no penetration, and with their first shot on target Brisbane Roar punished the home side to take the lead. With the Wanderers unable to clear their lines, Eric Bautheac nodded the ball down to the advantage of Massimo Maccarone who swivelled and laced a left foot half-volley past Janjetovic.

Ivan Franjic took advantage of static defending to score a goal with his first touch of the evening. The substitute defender cut back on his left foot & shot a curling strike back across goal, arcing over the outstretched hand of Janjetovic and dropping into the side netting. Defenders Llorente & Jack Clisby were caught cold, static & did little but watch him aim up on goal.

Western Sydney were toothless in attack, sitting back with no urgency, passing sideways & backwards over and over again. The 56% to 44% possession advantage meant little when the home side only managed 3 shots on target and conceded two goals with the only two shots their opposition put on target. Josep Gombau has a lot of work to do to salvage the season, and with the 2nd Sydney Derby coming up the Wanderers could be inching close to a double digit number of games without a win and losing touch with the top 6.

Did his hammy, fair enough, prob have been guilty of being too critical, but looked a bit strange and can still tell all not great between him and the gaffer.

He came back out all suited up and sat in the stands with other players a while after coming off. Is that what would have happened if he did his hammy?

He walked up some stairs - and didn't seem to be limping or in pain.

I'm not disputing it - just asking.

Must have been a very slight injury as when I did my hammy I was avoiding stairs at all costs.

Given good service he can score

Agree, but signing Gombau was a pretty obvious statement to stick with the project unfortunately. re-Sotirio, Gombau obviously loves an outlet player, esspecially one that ens in "irio". He had it with Cirio and now hes trying it out with Sotirio!! Problem is Sotirio is worse then a headless chook.

IMO the best way forward is to start bringing through some hungry youth and get the older guys more hungry. I look at the Jets, Perth and CCM and theres some exciting talent coming through.

With all the injuries on the weekend the opportunity (necessity?) is there to give some youngsters a go next match - but it is against the smurfs.

Well he missed a sitter, so the jury is still out whether he can score given good service. He also hasn't scored in a few games. If he misses an early chance, he seems to fade away.

Also not wasting energy because he thinks he's too good for the other players? I really hope that is not the case.

All speculation, but if was going off as some sort of protest against management then I doubt he would then put a suit on and go sit down, I think he tweaked something knew it wasn’t right and went off.

hopefully he is back for weekend we really need him

    any word on the king?

Maybe he picked something up earlier in warm up and was told to walk off if he even felt a niggle.

That slowmo on rolys knee getting hyper extended looked bad.

Apparently........Under-fire Wanderers 'are close' to first win under Gombau's reign.......

Funny how the headline had very little to do with article (& generally the journos don’t get much/any input over them)

Last year that worst game of the season was followed by the best game of the season, resulting in a win against the Smurfs.

There has to be a reaction by players and coaching group on Saturday.

I think we're gonna win on Saturday and go on a S1 esque run.

    You heard it here first.

Can we scan Sotirio for a brain?

They can't do a scan due to the fact that he has loaned his brain out to to some medical gurus who are trying to prototype an idiot.

My frustration at the inclusion of Sotirio is always directed at the coaching staff. He does his best however he is not at A League standard and it frustrates me that the club do not have anyone else to put in his place. It comes down again to bad recruitment. I look at Newcastle's and the Mariners' recruitment for this season in envy. Why didn't we sign a Da Silva or Petratos - ie good local players we know have talent. Instead we are persisting we players that have been given ample opportunity to prove themselves but don't.

He's a proven underperformer at this level but let's not take the personal attacks too far.

If the moderator ( mack ) thinks the post it is too personal or insensitive to the player , I am quite happy to have the post deleted and would except such moderation with no qualms or anger.

I think it’s time for a match day threads for next weekends games.

smurfs women beat Melb Victory women 2-0 last weekend with an American Keeper signed last week. Home Derby at ANZ before the A-League game

smurfs beat Adelaide 1-0 away without Ninkovic.

Smurf youth lost 1-3 to our NYL team. Our NYL play Newcastle at Marconi on Friday night at 7pm. I’m considering going just so I might be able cheer on the first win of the weekend for our club.
