  • Santa Strikes Late To Send Wanderers Top

    mack

A late winner for substitute Brendan Santalab against the Mariners has put the Wanderers back to the top of the A-League.

The clash of top & bottom looked to be a simple three points for the Wanderers, and the first half seemed to prove the theory. A dominant Wanderers outfit pressed and harried the Mariners defence, and when in possession, where completely untroubled by the youthful Central Coast squad. Just 11 minutes into the game the high press forced a turnover and a goal.

New Zealand international Storm Roux, being harried by Dario Vidosic & Mitch Nichols, seemed to be caught in two minds, producing a pass that was neither a backpass to the keeper nor a lateral pass to a defensive team-mate. Mark Bridge, who was playing up front with Federico Piovaccari dropped from the match squad entirely, gleefully pounced on the poor pass before firing through the legs of Paul Izzo to open the scoring.

Western Sydney should have gone into the half-time break up several goals, but as has been the case in recent weeks, the lack of a killer final pass stifled their attacking thrusts.

Central Coast came back strongly in the second half, gradually building up a momentum that reached a peak with the introduce of their marquee star, bringing Luis Garcia out of retirement off the bench. His ball down the left flank of the Mariners was latched onto by Mitch Austin, who turned a cross into the path of Josh Bingham, Andrew Redmayne had little time to react, and he spilled the ball out in front to the benefit of Fabio Ferreria who bundled the ball home.

Western Sydney regained their composure, reasserting dominance that was only kept at bay by desperate defending and tactical fouling from the home side. Almost inevitably it cost the Mariners their hope of winning the match. Their captain Nick Montgomery will serve his second suspension of the campaign, after his horribly mistimed lunging tackle that could have snapped Golgol Mebrahtu's shin. The straight red set the Mariners on the back foot for the remainder of the match.

All three of the Wanderers substitutes combined with Mitch Nichols to force the winner in the 87th minute. Mebrahtu & Mitch Nichols dogged pressing stole the ball from Michael Neil, Kearyn Baccus fired a cross into the area, Izzo spilled the ball right to the feet of Santalab and he fired the ball into the roof of the net, although for a moment it looked like it might have gone over the bar.

The win was well deserved for a dominant Wanderers, although once again there will be questions about their finishing and passing decisions in the final third. Facing Melbourne City next week will be a very tough test, and despite the win, they might not be at the top of the table pending the Melbourne Victory vs Sydney FC match this coming Tuesday.

This was an important win, similar to breathing Perth at home 1-0 or jets away 2-1 earlier this season. Putting away these lower teams, no matter the score builds confidence and is the thing that leads to long winning streaks.

We still should have put that game to bed in the first half no matter what.

The NSW teams always lift against us so I'm glad we got this one. But then again we always seem to prefer to want to win the hard way. But still a vital 3 points which will lift the team after a draw and two losses in the past few weeks.

I thought he was going to be baggage, but Luis Garcia is one fit 37 y/o that hasn't played for a year.

Happy for the win. Should've been closed out earlier. Two goals from major CCM defensive sloppiness. Dominated possession for most of the match and created heaps of chances. We need a fine striker baaaaad.

    Pio gone as well.

    Good night for you lads.

    seriously **** yeah!!!!!!!
Popa just denied it when asked by Peakcock in the post match interview

That's a politically correct way of saying goodbye.

He looked very sad at Westfield the other day.

Peacock really made my blood boil. Popa mentioned how happy he was that Gol Gol wasn't injured in that dirty tackle by Montgomery, he's just back from a bad injury, so glad he's okay etc..., Peacock literally just brushed aside Popas comment and moves on to the Pio question. I guess if your name's not Ali Abbas, no one's interested in your comeback

Aspro looked good, Gol Gol looked good when he was on, Santa is a legendary impact player.

Redders was unlucky. Saved two one on one chances and only conceded because the Mariners can't afford a grounds keeper and we played on a potato field (he wasn't the only player to slip over).

Romeo was frustrating. They kept showing replays of him ripping players but pretty much all of those runs ended with us losing possession.

Montgomery's red was deserved and Poscoliero should have been given a second yellow card for handling the ball to stop Romeo breaking away.

    Top of the league!

I don't know about that. He said they had already covered it, which they had done not long before the interview. Spent a good bit of time talking about how bad the tackle was and how gol gol had been out previously with injury. They know they'll only have limited time to talk/question popa, and they had been talking about Pio's absence and wanted to know what's going on..

Aspro should be playing every week. Too good to be sitting on the bench.

But Popa wasn't part of that discussion. There was no acknowledgement that yes, good to see that Gol Gol was okay. Sorry, I thought it was brushed aside

Is anyone gonna say anything about how Santa nearly skied that shot over the bar?

Great to get the three points, but we need to be better.

As it came off the boot I thought he'd stuffed it. Pretty much shaved the underside of the bar.

Aspro looked very composed tonight :good:

I thought he had a bit of a mare. Some weak clearances and half @ssed challenges. Can't say he filled me with confidence tonight.

popa leaves it too late to make replacements. The front half of our team do some much running that they are out of puff from the 60 minute mark. Santalab and another forward should come on at 60 minutes every match to reinvigorate our front 4.

Romeo was no better or worse than the majority on the pitch tonight. Got kicked a bit, put in a shift and yes frusrated at times, but not alone.

He wont be doing circuits with Pio any time soon. Will start next Friday.

We fell to bits when Garcia came on both offensively and in defense. Strange. That puts us top of the table and fans still carry on about should have could have when the reality is we had an epic night. The RBB was rocking top and bottom tiers. Sad for Pio if he has gone. Never made it to Dino status but well on his way.
