  • Santalab Seals Dominant Win On Coast

    mack

Super sub Brendon Santalab scored a 65th minute goal that put the Wanderers ahead, with Mitch Nichols providing the sealer in the 90th minute.

The Western Sydney Wanderers produced another dominant performance to go joint top of the A-League despite a late Mariners comeback, with the Red & Black proving too good for the hosts in Gosford this afternoon.

After coming on in the 58th minute for Dario Vidosic, Santalab latched onto a superb through ball by Mitch Nichols, streamed in on goal before firing past Paul Izzo from the edge of the penalty area to open the scoring.

Central Coast came on very strong in the last 10 minutes, throwing men forward in search of an equaliser. Their best chance of the game came from Nick Fitzgerald, who had his shot denied by an outstanding reflex save from Andrew Redmayne that arguably saved all 3 points for the Wanderers.

In the dying seconds of the game the Wanderers finally sealed the match, Jaushua Sotirio drew several defenders, Mitch Nichols was in acres of space on the penalty spot, Sotirio knocked through to the attacking midfielder. Nichols' shot was utterly dreadful, but with Izzo diving to his right, the ball dribbled over the line in one of the worst quality goals in the history of the A-League. Even Nichols himself looked embarrassed to have scored, but in the end they all count and the game was won for the Wanderers.

As with the other matches in this round, the RBB and Yellow Army, the respective active support groups staged their own protests due to the FFA's unjust ban process, and their failure to support football and it's supporters after the vehement and disgusting attacks on the sport from the anti-football media in the past week. The RBB left the ground in the 30th minute, with both the RBB & Yellow Army unveiling protest banners against the FFA. With Damien de Bohun refusing to bring in a just and fair, independent appeal process, and once again failing to defend the supporters, it is likely these protests will continue into further matches of the A-League season.

That's probably the first game Mitch was just solid without being awesome.

He's always awesome, even when he doesn't do awesome things! He runs so much, he's constantly making himself available, creating space for his teammates, looking to push forward, and just generally causing havoc by forcing defenders to have to make decisions about whether to follow him or not. King Mitch indeed!

Yeah another pretty comfortable afternoon. We don't look like losing at all.

Having the ability to more or less field a consistient 11 each week is now reaping rewards.

Much has been said already which match my sentiments but just what to call out redmayne as others did - brilliant save and saved us 2 points

Can't wait for next 2 weeks now to see where we are really at and maybe who know 2 bumper home crowds up near 17-18k

Grubs and Louts on tour: travel notes from Gosford

    • When we arrived at the pub, the first thing I noticed were five members of the riot squad inside the pub. Oh well, if they think they have to.
    • How funny was Hektik Hektor?
    • I was delighted that we didn't chant as we were climbing that blasted hill. Thank you!
    • That brass band is actually quite good. Once they stopped playing they starting chanting, all six of them. It was quite sadding to watch, I have to admit.
    • On a warm and sunny day that Gosford away bay is murder.
    • As long as it lasted the RBB was as good as it has ever been. A highlight was again Hektik Hektor standing on the fence.
    • Not sure how I feel about how the terrace moves and swing as the RBB jumps up and down. I do wonder if that stadium is actually Wanderers proof.
    • As we walked out there was a lady (the one with the obvious signs of plastic surgery) showing the way to the Leagues Club. Very different from two years back when a few thousand hungry WSW supporters were roaming the streets of Gosford just to be told by Leagues Club staff that the kitchen had closed.
    • They only accepted cash payments for dinks. Hmm. I walk over to the ATM. One of them is out of action. Hmm. The second one dies just before it is my turn to get money out. Hmmmmm.
    • Watching the second half on TV turned out to be one of these events I will never forget. Someone will have to wipe the beer stains off the ceiling mirror though.
    • Disappointing that so many non-active supporters didn't move to the sides or to the back. Oh well.
    • Whoever started the WDWSF: big fail.
    • You have to have chances first before you can butcher them, and Castelen did both in spectacular fashion. My goodness, if that guy was to translate his skills into goals he'd score twice in every game. Yesterday at times he looked like the second coming of Appiah though.
    • Bit of a worry to know Pio out, Bridgey injuring himself in the warm up, and Vidosic limping off.
    • Mario Shadow, ey? Popa is always good for a surprise.
    • Redmayne is always good for a shocker, but ultimately he saved the three points. Well done.
    • And so it was another win. The more games we win the more it sinks in just how tough and demoralising S3 was.
    • I was wearing the same pair of trousers I wore against Perth and in Newcastle, and it seems to work. I know what I am going to wear against the Roar.
    • We stayed back and watched DDB on TV. He talked a load of rubbish. As Mack put it, as long as the FFA wants to play judge, jury and executioner, nothing will change.
    • I have my doubts that the Settlers Arms was closing the pub because of carpet cleaning activities.

Agree with everything but the WDWSF - Mariners ramped up in the second half and did that pathetic "We sing for Yellow" (which is lame, but also disrespectful, especially as they were supposed to be in solidarity). Someone in a WSW bay outside the RBB area (and most of those who stayed kept right away from it) decided to shut them up with one of our own - I don't think it dissed the RBB or diminished the protest - and certainly wasn't intended to - but it did stick it up the saucebottlers.

And yes - I was in the extreme end bay, and when the RBB were in full voice I thought the whole stand was going to collapse. It certainly has a lot of bounce in it.

good result but should have been more. Unlucky with injuries with 2 big games coming up.

In the top tier i was unsure of what would happen but all good after the walk out. Not sure we should have done the poz at 80 minutes but there you go. This seemed to trigger the sauce bottle band into action and i loved how we responded to their WDWSF.

great day, kids loved it, spent a fortune on ice creams. Is it me or does Gosford just lend itself to the whole wanderers family. I hope our new stadium has 2 tiers.

Yeah, CCM away never feels like an away game. Even the side in the shade had a fair smattering of red and yellow over there.

Absolutely. And I'm not saying he was below par at all. he puts in man of the match performances week in week out, and his influence on the team is nothing but massively positive. It can only be a good thing when others knock it up a notch and can outshine him (in this case it was Andreu)

The whole day was better than I think many anticipated (i.e. with what we saw with police in Melbourne). Apart from the 5 or 6 riot buddies kicking back at the entrance, the police weren't bad at all (surprising to be honest).

Hektor just makes you smile and swoon.. the guy is all smiles and yes, thank **** we didn't start from the bottom of the hill, I was borderline passing out by the time we got to the top.

The RBB's best and hardest 30 minutes I can recall in a long time and I noticed the terrace 'bouncing' as well (looking at the other guys and yelling out "bro, is the ******* terrace shaking?") Awesome.

The WDWSF didn't go down well with lots of people, but at the same time we can see why they did it. I think the point was that if active goes you either follow them out or move to the sides and be 'non-active' .. whether a WDWSF counts or not, I don't know.

I got GoPro footage of the goals and poznan inside the RSL which I'll get to today at some point.

I think another boycott will be likely since DbD is still a useless ****, but we'll wait for the word.

    Oh, and **** DbD.

It's a basically built stadium. They didn't dig down or anything. They simply put the steel frames up and bolted the concrete sections to it. Has some give but won't go anywhere. Cheap and quick to build.

It's certainly no Wörthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt. I was there watching Germany vs Croatia at Euro 2008 and that stadium was shaking like nothing I've experienced before. The massive screen was rocking backwards and forwards as well. Quite a sight to behold.

FCB...me and Lloydy and Lloydy the Second went back to the Hungry Jacks next door to the Settlers...not a single cleaner or supporting vehicles in sight.

We went to the same joint, and made the same observation. Must be the fastest carpet cleaners in nsw.

Got there about 20mins late, and despite not able to be part of the active section (sitting directly across from the rbb amongst mariners fans ) was so proud to be a wanderers supporter. The singing before the walkout was just fantastic and the ensuing silence spoke volumes. It was quite eery. Absolutely fantastic effort from the rbb.

Don't believe there is any genuine intent from the ffa to engage with the fans/supporters group. I note they haven't agreed to an independent process and they are still framing the issue from the 'guilty until proven innocent'. Not good enough.

And despite all of the other things going on at the game yesterday i throughly enjoyed the football on display. We are playing so much better, especially knowing that in the same circumstances, same pressure situation in the second half, last season we would have capitulated and then it would have been game over. Now i just know that the goals will come and our defense is strong.

First away match, wanderers win, witness to a passionate protest and today is my day off. So happy right now

This season is shaping up very similar to S1. The main difference that I see is that in S1 we used to grind a win but hardly dominate, this season we pretty much outplayed the opposition in every game ( including the losses).

And we're still not destroying teams and taking our changes. Imagine a game when we do?

Also, what about Topor's run in the first half? Said out loud that he'll get a nose bleed... then he dang nearly should have scored.

They were right in front of me.

I think it was the Leeds United fan club of 6 guys....

There was one guy who supported the CCM and he had some of the funniest songs/chants. My favourite was the "Magic Spray" song to the tune of "Give it up"....

Weird place for them to sit, but they engaged with the WSW supporters and were in good spirits all game.

Halftime they were singing out to Montgomery, something about Leeds, with their Leeds flag...

Yeah NTS isn't far away from a goal, he's right up there getting in to it - and that cross against Wellington was a layer of paint from going in.

That header that he missed came down to experience, I believe. Maybe panicked or had that goal-post and defender in the front of his mind as he went for the goal.

He needs more, and has been given, opportunity to score - just needs to execute. If he can work more on his passing I think he'll be very dangerous.

Rowmayo..... soooo dangerous.. until he needs to score. It actually became hilarious towards the end. Heart attack hilarious.

    • I think the handball red was the right call. He might have gotten away with playing advantage (although that would have been exceptionally controversial and still might have got called back by VAR anyway) if the player on the ball hadn't shined it to the keeper. But it was a foul under the laws and it prevented the attacker's cut back to have a 1 on 1 with the keeper, and since it wasn't the tackle itself that caused the foul he didn't get the protection of the "attempt at making a football challenge" reduction to a yellow.
