  • Santalab Slays "Invincibles"

    mack

A herculean effort from the entire Western Sydney Wanderers team has finally broken the three year Sydney derby drought, claiming Sydney FC's "invincible" tag along with it.

Both sides traded blows in the early stages. After just 4 minutes Jaushua Sotirio was put through on goal by Mitch Nichols, the winger took too many wide touches, giving him a bad angle for his resultant shot. His Sydney FC counter-part Alex Brosque produced a stinging shot that brought out a great save from Vedran Janjetovic. Bobo followed up by blazing over the bar.

25 minutes into the contest the deadlock was broken by Wanderers legend Santalab. Nichols picked up the scraps from a over hit corner, lobbing the ball into the box for Santalab. The gun striker froze the sliding Bobo with a neat pause & turn, before firing through the legs of Danny Vukovic.

As the Wanderers fans were preparing for the customary Poznan, Sotiro had a shot deflect off a defender, Vukovic make a miracle save, knocked the ball onto the post and it just beat the outstretched feet of Nichols. Sydney FC had not lost an A-League match all season and they came on and on in search of an equaliser. In the 82nd minute Bobo ran into a defensive Red & Black wall with Vedran Janjetovic as the last line of defense. The striker took a ball down off his chest, fired at goal only for Janjetovic to get down low and block the ball at his left, with the rebound inching towards goal, the keeper made sure and palmed the ball clear. The save drew comparisons to Ante Covic's miracle save in the Asian Champions League final.

There was some last minute drama with Alex Brosque claiming a penalty, thankfully the refere didn't add to the litany of mistakes going in Sydney FC's favour. My only complaint is that Brosque wasn't punished for yet another example of shameless dissent.

Joyfully after the seemingly endless 6 minute stoppage time period, the referee drew a close to a thunderous Sydney Derby, one that will live forever as one of the best matches in the annals of this fixture.

At the time (and of course I'm very biased) I thought he was giving them the majority of decisions. He handed out yellow cards all of the place to us, while Simon got a way with a pushing somebody over right next to him, and the sly stamp from the dutch guy, also the bit where two smurfs smashed antonis and then he wave play on...

I thought, penalty shouts aside (haven't watched them yet either), we got some good calls too. We blatantly pulled down their players a couple of times when they were past us and/or looking to break and he gave nothing, then in the second half one of them did it and got a yellow. But how Simon escaped yellow is beyond me. Yeah we were holding the ball to slow play, but it's up to the ref to sort that, and he shoved him over TWICE, the second time more violently than the first.

    Anyway, **** em.

Dale for last 5 minutes was epic.

Having watched it on tv with all the replays etc, I think Beath was equally poor for both sides. Both sides definitely got away with a lot of fouls. In the first half I felt they were getting away with more, but then we had some luck in the 2nd. But then the 2nd also contained things like Simon's handball and his pushing etc.

    Tldr; Simon is a ****.

That's nice of Beath to agologise to the Smurfs. I hope he also apologised to Victory for the handball and the Marines for the offside (both by Carney) .... Somehow I doubt he did.

I haven't seen how bad the fouls were, but in general I'd prefer this over a dude who can't get the pea out of his mouth. Sometimes now it's like you can't even touch the opposition.

Top story on the SMH website is the Bossi's article claiming Chris Beath apologised to the smurfs.

The story has knocked every other sport.

The refs should be apologising to 8 other teams for the entire season...

If you read what he is supposed to have said it might have been "I'm sorry - I didn't see it and neither did the assistant".... for bossi and his pre pubescent covite understanding this means something else clearly.

Yeah it meant the game flowed well, I can't remember too many shocking challenges being let go.

What a difference a week makes. From the disappointment of a 2-loss to the CCM,to beating the Invincibles. Are they now just the "vincibles"

"You're probably more familiar with the antonym of vincible, the adjectiveinvincible, which means "unbeatable." Its opposite is much more rarely used, but it can be useful for talking about something — or someone — that can be defeated. The Latin root word of vinciblevincere, means "to conquer," and it's also the origin of the words victor and victorious."

I remember this feeling of waking up after winning a derby!

Quality effort from all. A bit lacking in the final third from Sotirio, and Antonis has not quite gelled with the rest of the team yet but Santa, Nichols, Clisby, Vedran all had amazing games!

Sydney morning Herald has 2 articles on the derby this morning.

First one is the match report claiming the smurfs played like a Maserati and we played like a fiat... Lol. Also claiming the ref saved away 4 (yes 4) penalty claims.

The other article is the smurfs claiming Chris Beath later apologised for not giving brosque a penalty at 93 mins.

    Love it. So salty!

Haha mate you should have heard andy harper commentate on this match last night..... he doesn't hide any biased comments. He was hurting at fulltime. Hope he is ok. The smurf media propaganda machine is in over drive this morning back peddaling.

There is a lot of people who follow Sydney FC based on the fact that they don't like Western Sydney (the region and people that live there). Whether it be journalists or kids born with silver spoons in their mouths. It's one of the great reasons to follow Wanderers. They truly are a smug, self entitled lot.

It is like Middlesbrough in England with the southern based London media, they look down on the people and the town. If we get anywhere near the FA cup final there will be stories about how **** the town and its people are.

    Invincibles? - My ARS E !!!

Fantastic performance by our whole team!

RBB were excellent and loved it when the side stands joined in too later on.

Wonder if the FFA will dish out a fine to ESFC for the Cove breaking seats and throwing them on the field after the game? Don't hold your breath...

I did see a young lad in a Boro shirt at the rbb gate last weekend and thought 'poor kid'. Mind you, I'm from Gloucester so all we have is cider and inbreeding....

Really.... my son has a Boro top of course but wouldn't have been him.... seen a guy in  boro top at a WSW game at Parra one. He was from Canberra and just followed the Boro from the Schwartzer and Viduka days.

Compulsory word for most of Sydney and Australia today is SHADENFREUDE.

FCB: How come the Germans don't have a word for SCHADENFREUDE?

Why would I care about the Germans? I am Bavarian.

R19 worst game of the season. R20 best game of the season. WSW 2016/17. Go figure.

Three players left from the starting 11 of Rd1. Back then we started with Borda, Jumpei, Dimas, Bruno. This time with Aspro, Sotirio, Antonis, Baccus.

Our homegrown guys and Cornflakes are twice the players they were in October. Less can be said of most of our imports.

Sotirio flooring grant, Baccus using his full body against O'Neill. That's how you play the Smurfs. Turning their own attitude against them.

Yes I have mentioned before, we had 1 foreigner in the starting line up, the rest were homegrown players, what does that tell you when the smurfs have 4 of them starting, and we managed to beat them? Take 3 of their foreign players out starting lineup, leave Ninkovic starting and their starting 11 would at least look dead set avg.

And it took us 20min to get going, the first 20 felt like it was dragging on, there was no tempo to the game and the smurfs were dominating, we lifted after the goal, it woke us up and i start seeing players get stuck in for once and not holding back. Seeing Sotirio trolling Grant all night then throw into the signage was great to see... So finally, our team started to know how derby

Looking at the smurf lineup last night I thought a thought that I often think when I watch them...how the **** is this team under the salary cap???

All 4 foreigners came from pretty reputable clubs. Then you have players like Vukovic, Brilliante, Wilkinson, Zullo...all fairly big name Aussie players who would've been on good coin.

And then on the bench you've got guys like Ibini who was at Brugge!

But as others have mentioned, it's ******* great to see so many locals in our team. A team like that just means so much more than one thrown together by creative accounting.

Watching the replay on tv and how come the cove sounds so much louder than the RBB?? It wasn't anything like that at the game and I was halfway between the two groups? Foxtel up to some tricks??

We were seated at the halfway line about 5 or 6 rows from the fence and the RBB were consideribly louder than the cove.

There were mics suspended from the rafters over the centre of both groups, methinks they had to turn the coves mic on .

Just watching the replay of the pen and when you watch it in slow motion, Cornflakes definitely gets the ball first. I mean you cannot argue against that if you watch it.

After that he does trip Brosque and you could argue that that is still a foul because the ball was still up for grabs, but no-one seems to be mentioning that he did touch the ball first.

Ha ha ha The pro esfc media is in full meltdown mode. Just wait til they dont win the grand final and only claim the premiers plate. Remember the Roar a few years back undefeated at home for ages then lost one and many more after that. About time we had some luck go our way in the derby. If they were so good they should have beaten us anyway. EAD arnold....
