  • Santalab Strike Keeps Wanderers Top

    mack

A goal of the season contender late on from Brendon Santalab rubbed out Besart Berisha's first half opener in a 1-1 draw in Melbourne tonight.

Berisha scored the opener in the 16th minute. From a Victory corner, he broke away from his marker, beating the cover defence to the ball, heading into the ground, with the b all bouncing past Andrew Redmayne.

Ben Williams once again decided that it wasn't enough for the two teams to be the centre of attention, and he stole the spotlight with a baffling decision in the 29th minute. As Scott Jamieson was preparing for an attacking free kick, Williams repeatedly to get his line marking spray all over the ball, moving it off the mark, and after Jamieson went to clear it away, Williams pulled out a yellow card.

It was yet another massively inept and egotistical display by the man in the middle, as he gave out cards like candy before finally getting to pull out his favoured red card against Alberto Aguilar late in the game. With Dimas Delgado suspended for picking up his 5th yellow card, and Andreu going off with an injury, the three Spanish imports may all be missing for the next match against Wellington.

The second half was all Wanderers. Camped in the Victory half, they laid siege to the goal of Danny Vukovic, and the goalkeeper was the only thing keeping the score level, with the lead up to the Alberto red card being a wonderful save from a powerful Topor-Stanley header.

Brendon Santalab however came on and took away what would have been a well deserved clean sheet. With the 89th minute taking on, Santalab went strong into a 50/50 with Bouzanis, who shied away from possible contact. Santalab cut back towards goal then unleashed a right footed strike from the top of the penalty arc, it flew like a rocket off the boot, swerving away from the keeper who had no chance at all.

It was a deserved equaliser for the Wanderers, and they were unlucky not to take a late lead through Topor-Stanley's header. As it stood in the end, Western Sydney are back in the first place, equal on 34 points with Brisbane who smashed the Mariners 4-0 earlier in the day, and 6 clear of both Melbourne teams and Sydney FC who make up 3rd to 5th.

These games are just getting betterOur domination on the field is just unbelievable. It's just that final third where we lose composure. More than that we lack the ability to penetrate compact defence lines.

Having a marquee striker sat at home scratching his arse is the diff between being top on goal diff and being 7 or 8 points clear.

Until Santa came on we didn't look likely.

    Never a truer sentence said...

Super frustrating considering the effort - as usual opposition goalkeepers keep their best games for us...Dimas the boss...Jamo the engine that could

Really thought it would end up being one of those nights where we worked hard and came away with nothing. Vuko really should have been man of the match. He kept them in with some outstanding saves. We took chances when they came (not all by any means, at we could have done better) but were denied by some outstanding defending.

Muscat suggesting some cynical fouling in the second half when they broke away? Maybe 1 or 2, but not consistantly by any means.

    Berisha, **** wit. Enough said.

Santa, legend. You could have the pick of western Sydney, male or female, I don't think any would knock you back.

Key to Redders to put his head on the line early in the match.

Home or away, we will dominate any team

Away fans did us all proud from back home

Santa what a strike- how about Sotirio at the end there

Jamo had Kosta B in his pocket all game

There are people who talk about wanting berisha at our club.

I hope that you now realise the error in your ways.

i don't want this bitch anywhere near us.

if there was a 'all time most hated' a-league 11 he would be captain, and muscat would be the vice.

    fück them both.

Dominated the game in many many ways, however the lack of a consistent striker as per that Albanian salesman or Fornarolli or even Mclaren hurts us. Also, both offensively and defensively our set piece/dead ball work is not as good as it should be.

On the balance of it there was a fairly even standard of play from most of our lads, with Jamo and Dimas my personal picks for men of the match. Yes Santa scored and he is a bona fide fooking A-Grade Top of the Table No Arguments dead set bloody Legend, however his impact off the bench is almost second nature, to be expected.

Regarding Los Trios Espanol and their absence from next week, it's a blow however I am sure we can cope. Aspro back into the CB pairing, Pepper and Baccus in the mids and we still look reasonably sound defensive. Going forward may be an issue however KB was better than half decent with his stint tonight.

Gotta admit props to Victory with Vukovic and Delpierre. Those two saved them the game tonight. For all the yammering from Musckunt post match re the stop-start nature of the game due to Williams going whistle happy, and how that hurt his mob...well it was their fooking fault.

Bottom line, to come away from a match that at the beginning of this season would've been viewed as an Everest to climb, what with all the squad changes, a very capable oppo and Williams as ref/fucqknuckle, and get a point to stay top of the table is a pretty good result. Life for Victory won't get much easier, what with no Valeri, questions over the fitness of many of their players and ACL commitments. We have some big challenges too...however we should be far happier to be where we are then where we could be.

Haven't had chance to read stuff. From where I stood we battered them second half. What was the Alberto thing for?

Handbags between him and the Albanian Salesman.

If Alberto deserved some cherry pie so did BB

Imagine if Taurus told us his secret ment for Tuesday about signing a striker

Dude relax. Taurus said when he knows the name, he'll tell us.

Alberto slapped Berisha after Berisha allegedly bit him. Even if he Berisha didn't bite him, he definitely did something. Alberto went from calm to seeing red in a split second
