  • Santalab Strike Keeps Wanderers Top

    mack

A goal of the season contender late on from Brendon Santalab rubbed out Besart Berisha's first half opener in a 1-1 draw in Melbourne tonight.

Berisha scored the opener in the 16th minute. From a Victory corner, he broke away from his marker, beating the cover defence to the ball, heading into the ground, with the b all bouncing past Andrew Redmayne.

Ben Williams once again decided that it wasn't enough for the two teams to be the centre of attention, and he stole the spotlight with a baffling decision in the 29th minute. As Scott Jamieson was preparing for an attacking free kick, Williams repeatedly to get his line marking spray all over the ball, moving it off the mark, and after Jamieson went to clear it away, Williams pulled out a yellow card.

It was yet another massively inept and egotistical display by the man in the middle, as he gave out cards like candy before finally getting to pull out his favoured red card against Alberto Aguilar late in the game. With Dimas Delgado suspended for picking up his 5th yellow card, and Andreu going off with an injury, the three Spanish imports may all be missing for the next match against Wellington.

The second half was all Wanderers. Camped in the Victory half, they laid siege to the goal of Danny Vukovic, and the goalkeeper was the only thing keeping the score level, with the lead up to the Alberto red card being a wonderful save from a powerful Topor-Stanley header.

Brendon Santalab however came on and took away what would have been a well deserved clean sheet. With the 89th minute taking on, Santalab went strong into a 50/50 with Bouzanis, who shied away from possible contact. Santalab cut back towards goal then unleashed a right footed strike from the top of the penalty arc, it flew like a rocket off the boot, swerving away from the keeper who had no chance at all.

It was a deserved equaliser for the Wanderers, and they were unlucky not to take a late lead through Topor-Stanley's header. As it stood in the end, Western Sydney are back in the first place, equal on 34 points with Brisbane who smashed the Mariners 4-0 earlier in the day, and 6 clear of both Melbourne teams and Sydney FC who make up 3rd to 5th.

Game was amazing, had it all.

Flares/detonators sounded sick on TV !

Now compare this to the so called "Big Blue" snooze fest, you gotta laugh.

We have the best team, supporters and club mentality, the rest of the league knows this too and hates us for it

    Proud to be hated !

    Onward to the nix !

Any news on andreu ? Glad this **** happened tonight and not next week heading into the derby

Difficulty we have is that what was meant to be our no 9 is in the stands and our no 10 while fantastic is a runner not a creator so when faced with deep defences we are struggling to break them down and just end up throwing ourselves into a brick wall over and over again.

Poor lady in front of us accidentally bought tix in away bay but goes for victory... had little 3/4 year old girls with her. Told her she should consider moving coz she wont get to see the game then gave her kids wanderers stickers... they sticker bombed the seats, sat for a while, then took off as soon as we started singing pre match :)))

Wow what a cracker by santa. Unbelievable finish. I am staying out at dubbo zoo tonight.....pretty sure i woke up a lion.

Jamo owned kosta and i still cannot get over the card happy ben williams. Seriously does he even get how much he impacts on a season by waving cards around willy nilly.

Anyways glad we got something out of the game. Certainly didnt deserve to lose

Too 3 first timers who live in Melbourne. They were a bit shy first 2 minutes then were more active than half our fans! They all said best experience ever!

Totally shattered now! What a great night, losing my voice now. Great to meet up again with forumites.

We dominated especially second half we pushed and pushed for the equaliser and after that they were just hanging on.

I can't think of Redmayne having to make a save.

    Mvc played anti football haha

For once you're on to something can't remember them even being so scared

Vukovic and del Pierre were immense for them as good as I've seen two players perform

We are looking really good at moment just need to keep this form up.

Epic game and I'll never ever forget that moment when Santa riffled that in like a head seeking missle!

Castelen **** me how frustrating can this guy get if!

Anyway top of table and awesome trip

Haven't had chance to read stuff. From where I stood we battered them second half. What was the Alberto thing for?

Alberto slapped Berisha after Berisha allegedly bit him. Even if he Berisha didn't bite him, he definitely did something. Alberto went from calm to seeing red in a split second
I couldn't really see the slap on the replay, you could see a hand connect with Berisha's face but seemed more handbags than anything else. I couldn't figure out how georgeski got a yellow, thought Berisha was more deserving?

Reminded me when Og slapped Saba in the first derby last season but must have been much more than to get red. Fair enough though, you raise your arms/hand to an opponents face you've got to cop the consequences.

    That's what Popa said post-match.

Was a silly red card and at first it looked like Neville so don't know how he could make out whos hands offending, just hope he didn't give it to the wrong player.

Muscat accidentally slapped Jamieson in the face too lulz made me giggle but it wasn't as serious or card happy worthy.

So much butt hurt from victory fans complaining about our travelling support on social media. How uneducated are these people? Labeling all of our support base as housos and calling for games to be played behind closed doors....yet i am sure all the victory fans come from toorak and st kilda... Get a ***** life! Besides the flares and bangers our travelling support was awesome nothing comes close to matching it. The noise was booming through etihad... Couldnt stop laughing up on level 3 when the pisstake chant was being sung and all those in navy blue sat there with glum shocked looks on their faces. Typical hard fought away game and the rivalry will only grow from here

They're salty because all you can hear was the RBB. You have to be a pretty useless group of stooges to get outsung in your own ******* stadium! So much for Melbourne "Victory" since they can't seem to win on or off the pitch.

Also lol at wanting to play behind closed doors. I'd like to see them go to any football game outside this country, they'd probably have a fit.

That was 1000-1200 fans making that sort of noise can you imagine double that??? That ground wasnt too bad to watch the game at from level 3.

It appeared on tv that victory fans let off an orange flare after they scored.

Can anyone who attended the game confirm? The coverage made a massive deal over those let off in rbb. Showed a sh*t load of stadium angles and constant criticism. Yet when they appeared to do it - no comment.

I noticed a few on twitter saw it too, just want to confirm though.

Glad you won the 3rd one to be fair as it would have been a nightmare to hear the esfc fans crow on about it had they have won. Lol

The anti football msm has created this narrative of flares = crime against humanity.

This is not unexpected as most are beholden to competing codes.

What is disappointing is when football people both media and fans jump on the same bandwagon and do the work of the anti football lot for them.

Stop letting those who want to see the game fail set the agenda and tell us what is acceptable and what is not within our game.

    • Pep Guardiola: "I'm going to defend you until the last day of our lives in the press". Rudan: Runs onto the field at full-time to berate an attacker for a goal coughed up by the two fullbacks being lazy, then slates him in a post-game interview and the press conference.  Sure, he apologised for "singling him out", did he apologise for singling out the wrong player to start with? The Mariners & Nix finished 5th & 6th in 21/22 when Rudan took over. Rudan's second year we finished 4th then lost to the smurfs in Round 1 while the Mariners won the Grand Final. 3rd year, CCM are the favourites for the Premiership, the Nix have a chance if CCM drop points, and we're back in 6th with a game tomorrow against a team who beat us 7-0 earlier in the season that if we lose we're out of the finals spots, and even if we made it, we're probably just going to lose to Victory in Week 1. I'm so over this ****. Rudan has had three years and done **** all to improve things, he's not done well enough to add all this pointless drama and bullshit.
    • Does he miss the next match?
    • Couldn't they just play their NPL team? it would have been unlikely ADL would have beaten them as well
