  • Scoreless Scrap In Seoul

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers can count themselves unlucky to have not come away with all three points in their Asian Champions League group stage match against FC Seoul.

The Wanderers dominated the match and restricted the hosts to a handful of real opportunities. Labinot Haliti & Kerem Bulut had the best chances of the game for the Wanderers but neither could apply the required finish. Haliti hitting the crossbar, while Bulut couldn't manage to round the goalkeeper.

The draw leaves the Wanderers in 2nd place on 4 points, equal with their opponents FC Seoul, both 5 points adrift of powerhouse Guangzhou. The next round is shaping as the key matchday for the group. With the four teams backing up for the return legs from tonight's fixtures, Guangzhou will be expecting to seal progression to the knockout stages by defeating Kashima Antlers. The Antlers could be the first team out of contention should they lose as expected and either the Wanderers or FC Seoul win in Parramatta on the 7th of April.

The Wanderers next match is against the Newcastle Jets at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday the 21st of March, kickoff at 5pm.

Great effort from the boys, created several good chances, just need a bit more composure in front of goal and put them away. Should've won it, but a point is OK. We'll beat them at home again like last time.

I am happy with the draw considering that we hardly have enough players to put on the field.Covic seems to be back and Topo had a blinder. Romeo was a bit off today but improved in the 2nd halve. Hopefully we will have some players back for the return leg.

    - Bulut could have had a two had he just had a bit more composure in front of goal, this could prove cruical in the upcoming match days. Haliti's screamer deserved better

    - last thing we needed was losing Spira & Juric in one game. We are basically losing 1 or 2 bodies per match now. Impossible schedule is impossible. Just hope NTS isn't suffering too much because he didn't look good (was immense tonight)

    - when you consider they had no shots on target, you have to say it was a wonderful defensive performance tonight, offensively it was much like our past ACL campaigns. Not too much play through mid field, look to hit on the counter or win the ball up the field.

    - Has to be our strongest XI on the park tonight & I'd like Popa to try to keep the boys fresh for the ACL matches as much as possible. It's a tight group (GE beating Antlers meaning GE 9, FC Seoul & WSW 4, Antlers 0) so getting a result against Antlers at home will be important but the game against FC Seoul at home will determine who progresses through with our group.

    - All in all, you have to wonder who will be ready to play Saturday. There are plenty of injuries & tired bodies at the moment, just hope we can put in a decent performance with whatever fit bodies we have available. I said it last week & I'll say it again. The FFA really need to make sure they help teams performing in the ACL & not hinder progress or penalise teams for there success.

    - Romeo performance was off tonight, got dominated every time he tried to take on his man & only got some success when he came central. Funny how average players like Haliti, Cole, bridge & Trifiro play well in ACL but struggle to have as much impact domestically. Tonight it was the opposite, a class player in the Aleague & pretty much our best attacking weapon but looked half as imposing or effective tonight.

The counter attacking style we played tonight in the ACL reminds me of our season 1.

I don't think we dominated the game though, we were defending the most of the 2nd half.

hopefully Spira and Juric are okay,

will they fly straight to Germany??

No chance they'll travel now... Big shame for both of them as it was the shop window moment for them :( they'll be gutted

Wish we'd sign a striker who can actually put the ball over that white line... the one with the net behind it. Ruka seems to be getting worse the longer the season goes on. He's starting to make Appiah-Kubi's touch look masterly. What is it with Castelen? One week a firecracker, a class above the rest of the team, the next week a damp squib.

posession is hopeless, long balls hoofed fwd with no real control of the match or the ball, kalmar needs to play more to give us more through ball options instead of the same predictable long ball hit n hope to our fwds. Bulut is hungry and i like how our fwds like in season 1 are pressing again much faster, only prob is good asian teams are able to get out of the hard press and play their way out of it.

Almost the perfect game for the prosecuting case waged by anti-sokkah fans.

Take out maybe 2-3 mins when we had those scoring opportunities we looked unimaginative and tired. However we have all the reasons/excuses for such a grinding, frustrating effort. FC See-owl (as Ned would call them)? Take out Char Du Ri & they were arguably even more impotent.

The more points GE get against Seoul & Kashima the better.

Baring an upset in the return game between Seoul & GE, provided we get at least 4 points against Seoul (3pts) & Kashima (1pt) at home, we should qualify 2nd.

    Current Table GE - 9, WSW - 4, FCSeoul - 4, Kashima - 0.

Taurus is correct, with a strong Evergrade out in the lead another loss to them means little if we can salvage points against the others.

We're positioned "favourably" to take second spot due to the home games in hand.

Anything can happen though, hence use of the word favourably.
