  • Second Half Collapse Costs Cup Semi-Final

    mack

An abysmal second half from the Wanderers gifted Sydney FC a 3-0 win and a place in the FFA Cup final tonight in Penrith.

The Wanderers should have opened the scoring just 7 minutes in, Riera cut through in on goal 1v1, but elected to try a cutback across the 6 yard box for Roly Bonevacia. Perhaps the left winger didn't expect the striker to shoot so he was caught a little on his heels, and it allowed a defender to come back and block the ball. Shortly after there was a shout for a Sydney FC penalty with Keanu Baccus sticking a bit of his leg out, it would have soft and the referee decided to let play continue.

Andrew Redmayne kept the scores level with a strong save in the 20th. The Wanderers piled on the pressure, a corner fell to the feet of Captain Brendan Hamill and he blasted a shot at the near post that Redmayne palmed away. 10 minutes later Riera just couldn't touch a cross by Roly Bonevacia, and just before the break Sotirio had a shot spilled by Redmayne but no-no from the home side could follow up. The two teams went into the half level, with the Wanderers slightly on top in terms of chances but lacking a cutting edge in front of goal.

The second half was a disaster for the Wanderers as they fell behind immediately and totally lost control of the game. Raul Llorente misjudged a defensive header, giving it to Sydney FC in a dangerous position, De Jong found Trent Buhagiar and he blew past Elrich with pace and tapped it around the onrushing Nizic.

The game should have been level in the 63rd minute. Josh Risdon was clear through on goal, with no-one but the keeper to beat and sent his shot straight at Andrew Redmayne. It was a dismal finish from a national team player, a shot that was harder to miss than score. It was the last major action for the Wanderers and not long after they were two down.

As is an A-League referee's want, they favoured Sydney FC all night and a dodgy foul outside the area was the catalyst for Sydney FC's second goal. De Jong stepped up and curled his strike to the opposite corner from Nizic and the keeper's despairingly slow dive was too late to even get a touch. A 74th minute penalty was the sealer, Tarek Elrich, who was deployed in central defence due to a raft of injuries to the club's nominal central defenders tapped Le Fondre on the knee and the striker went down like a sack of potatoes. Having won the penalty he stepped up and fired a rocket into the top of the goal for 3-0.

The match petered to it's inevitable conclusion as the Wanderers could barely manage a shot on target let alone a goal, and in fact Sydney FC had the best chances to extend their lead. For all the pre-match talk from Hamill questioning if Sydney FC had improved, it was the visiting side who took their chances and kept a clean sheet. The Babbel era has kicked off with a succession of injuries and a lack of composure up front, and there is not a lot of time left before two tough away trips to Perth & Sydney to start the A-League season.

Adelaide United were drawn as the hosts, and will want to take revenge for their FFA Cup final defeat in Sydney last year.

Another derby, another loss. It’s like Groundhog Day. Dominate, create a million chances and don’t score. Sydney create just one and score. That’s the difference between us and them. Has been for 4 years now. You could just sense it was coming as we flounded every clear cut chance.

Everybody in the stadium knew that free kick was going in. Name a more iconic duo than free kicks going in against WSW. It’s comical.

Cant wait to do it all again in three weeks, except this time we’ll be watching the ball go in through a pair of binoculars.

No passion, no fight and no balls. Absolutely embarrassed yet again.

Not just us and them. For the last few seasons it seems like us and any other team in the league.

Playing Sortiro and not Kamau is never a good sign for the up coming season, but I'd play one of those little dogs that has a set of wheels for rear legs instead of him....I'm more upset about Ziggy than last nights result if I'm honest

I was trying to decide whether to go in the club for a beer and wait for the traffic to go or just leave immediately. Decided to leave and got stuck.

Saw two blokes walk past and go into the club, walk back out half an hour later, get into their car a little bit in front of me and get let into the queue by the people ahead.

    I had regrets.

The trick is not to park in the carpark. We parked in the street a few hundred yards from the stadium at about 7. Back in the car a few minutes after fulltime and out of Penrith in less than 10 minutes.

A Wanderers burger should have red stripes of tomato sauce across the black bun. Could make for some messy consumption though.

Also, there should be a small football on the table. It would indicate where Sotirio's attempt at eating it ended up.

Yep. I used to park in the streets behind the old Panasonic tv factory....Brown St.......walk through the vacant block on Jamieson Rd and Woodriffe St....2 minute walk.

Yeh. I got there at 5.30 pm. I parked on that main road directly behind the Eastern stand. After walking back to my car, (5 minutes) I was back on the M4 within another 5 minutes. No problems. I was home in Dural within 45 minutes.

I'm sure there's worse out there but

Man City didn't beat Man United for 16 games between February 1990 and April 2001.

Spurs didn't beat Chelsea for 26 matches between 1990 and 2002, or Arsenal for 21 matches between 2000 and 2008.

Hibs didn't beat Hears in 22 in the early 90s.

Boro haven't beaten Newcastle since 2006 and only won 3 of 22 derby games this century :nono:

‘The result is a disaster’: Western Sydney Wanderers squander chance to reach FFA Cup final

MARKUS Babbel has described the Western Sydney Wanderers’ semi-final defeat to fierce rivals Sydney FC as a “disaster”.

The Wanderers dominated the first half at Panthers Stadium, but squandered several opportunities to take the lead.

The ended up losing 3-0 to a Sydney side that were clinical with their chances and Babbel says the result is a hard one to stomach.

“The result is a disaster for us because the performance was good, even in the second half,” he said.

“If you watched the three goals, the first goal was a mistake from us, an easy mistake that cannot happen at this level. The second goal you have to accept this, a top free kick, the penalty, to be fair for me wasn’t a penalty.

“It’s hard for the team — they worked hard and did many things right. But this is the point, if you can’t score ... it’s not a good day for us.”

Trent Buhagiar opened the scoring, before Siem De Jong scored a superb free kick to double Sydney’s lead.

And the result was sealed when Adam Le Fondre converted from the spot after he was clipped in the area by Tarek Elrich.

The Wanderers have had mixed results during their pre-season, and with the A-League just two weeks away, Babbel says his players need to work harder.

“A massive chance to get in the final and we couldn’t take it,” Babbel said.

“ There has to be a mentality that you win games like this, you keep going, the goal is coming, don’t give up.

“We will work harder to get success.”

Despite the scoreline, I'm more worried about our attack than our defence. In the first half we restricted them to virtually nothing. We then had a brain fade at the start of the 2nd half, but the other two goals were yet another perfect free kick and a dodgy penalty. Considering we had our best defender out and Nizic in goal it wasn't that bad. Obviously depth at the back is an issue.

But I just don't see where our goals are gonna come from. Baumjohann and Riera had some nice 1-2s, but we're not gonna score a lot of goals that way. We had excellent chances at 0-0 and even 1-0 down, but there's not point continuing to moan about our poor finishing. It's not going to change, the players aren't going to suddenly become much better at finishing than they are already. So what we need instead is a variety of options to score, to allow for all the inevitable misses. But at the moment all we basically have is balls across the box looking for Riera, or through balls which are great if they come off, but are pretty low percentage.

If Ziggy gets his Aussie citizenship I would take a gamble and use the visa spot on an attacking player instead. Our wingers atm are Roly, Sotirio, Majok, Fitzgerald, Kamau. We're not going to win anything with those.

Oh yeah, and Santa would have been useful last night...

Riera gets shitty at the service from the attacking mid and the wingers particularly, so he starts coming deep or wide to get the ball. The problem is that he's usually too slow to get back into a good position before the other attacking players really should play the ball, so it completely ruins most attacks because there's no-one on the end of things and then we have to recycle it backwards to the central midfielders. I bet this is what his blowup with Gombau was about.

Yeah there were a few yesterday where his age showed in that he couldn't reach the ball into the box for a tap in. He's probably our second most technically gifted player, so he looks good when he comes back, but as you say there's not much point to it. If we had decent wingers he could just stay in the box. This also would prevent the opposition CBs from moving up too much and therefore would bring the entire opposition back, making it harder for them to launch attacks.

He can’t cross the ball to himself
