  • Second Half Collapse Costs Cup Semi-Final

    mack

An abysmal second half from the Wanderers gifted Sydney FC a 3-0 win and a place in the FFA Cup final tonight in Penrith.

The Wanderers should have opened the scoring just 7 minutes in, Riera cut through in on goal 1v1, but elected to try a cutback across the 6 yard box for Roly Bonevacia. Perhaps the left winger didn't expect the striker to shoot so he was caught a little on his heels, and it allowed a defender to come back and block the ball. Shortly after there was a shout for a Sydney FC penalty with Keanu Baccus sticking a bit of his leg out, it would have soft and the referee decided to let play continue.

Andrew Redmayne kept the scores level with a strong save in the 20th. The Wanderers piled on the pressure, a corner fell to the feet of Captain Brendan Hamill and he blasted a shot at the near post that Redmayne palmed away. 10 minutes later Riera just couldn't touch a cross by Roly Bonevacia, and just before the break Sotirio had a shot spilled by Redmayne but no-no from the home side could follow up. The two teams went into the half level, with the Wanderers slightly on top in terms of chances but lacking a cutting edge in front of goal.

The second half was a disaster for the Wanderers as they fell behind immediately and totally lost control of the game. Raul Llorente misjudged a defensive header, giving it to Sydney FC in a dangerous position, De Jong found Trent Buhagiar and he blew past Elrich with pace and tapped it around the onrushing Nizic.

The game should have been level in the 63rd minute. Josh Risdon was clear through on goal, with no-one but the keeper to beat and sent his shot straight at Andrew Redmayne. It was a dismal finish from a national team player, a shot that was harder to miss than score. It was the last major action for the Wanderers and not long after they were two down.

As is an A-League referee's want, they favoured Sydney FC all night and a dodgy foul outside the area was the catalyst for Sydney FC's second goal. De Jong stepped up and curled his strike to the opposite corner from Nizic and the keeper's despairingly slow dive was too late to even get a touch. A 74th minute penalty was the sealer, Tarek Elrich, who was deployed in central defence due to a raft of injuries to the club's nominal central defenders tapped Le Fondre on the knee and the striker went down like a sack of potatoes. Having won the penalty he stepped up and fired a rocket into the top of the goal for 3-0.

The match petered to it's inevitable conclusion as the Wanderers could barely manage a shot on target let alone a goal, and in fact Sydney FC had the best chances to extend their lead. For all the pre-match talk from Hamill questioning if Sydney FC had improved, it was the visiting side who took their chances and kept a clean sheet. The Babbel era has kicked off with a succession of injuries and a lack of composure up front, and there is not a lot of time left before two tough away trips to Perth & Sydney to start the A-League season.

Adelaide United were drawn as the hosts, and will want to take revenge for their FFA Cup final defeat in Sydney last year.

On a controversial note, those people who left after the 3rd goal, don’t come back, or leave early when we’re up 3-0, gotta endure the bad games with the good games.

Each to their own. A four goal difference is my breaking point - after the 2016 semifinal against Brisbane I find it hard to walk out when we’re three down, even if there are only a few minutes to go and the team looks like their minds are already at the pub.

As for the game... It was good to be close to the pitch again. It made me realise just how much I miss my seat at Parramatta, and that I’ll have to pay a premium to get a similar one in the new stadium. Apart from that, what was with Grant’s mullet?

On another note, at the game, there are two spare seats next to Jnr and I. 20 minutes into the game, two hipster looking 20 y.o's turn up, wearing brand clothing, not a hair out of place, and no supporters gear to identify who they support.

First 5 minutes of their chat is about EPL. Then, my young Jnr heard the question from one to the other - "So is Bobo still with SFC? Then, they spend time on their phones, while still talking about the EPL. Then, 5 minutes before half time, they head down to get food.

When ESFC scored in the 2nd half, they both jumped up and cheered.

The quintessential example of worst football supporters ever. ******* Eurosnobs.

All of the above. And seriously not one of the our Team would even make it onto Easts bench and how Risdon is in the National Team is beyond me?

Let's face it we are just an average Pub side and until we clear all of this lot out expect much of the same in coming months.

Looks like another season of mediocrity ahead on the field. With a mediocre set of players. After that S@ite last night

The Joy of SOP and all that goes with the match day experience there to look forward to

And so much for " the acknowledgement that we need active fans " . The over the top heavy handed policing yet again  in evidence last night seems to kill that theory.

The fear of not getting a good seat at the new stadium driving many people to renew this year.

Will  be interesting to see our attendances this season and how many people actually turn up. The SOP thing , another average season on the field plus potentially less and less active participation.

But hey..the new stadium will fix all these issues won't it .

From great beginnings to what appears to be a middle table club at best.

    How sad..

Sorry ...morning after night before blues....

The ground at the northern was watered for 15 minutes before the warm up. And that as the non-scoring end.

Why they watered it is beyond me.

They cut to a shot of Lederer in the stand in the last few minutes....looked like he was going to puke. That is what you get when you run the club on the smell of an oily rag for a few years. Waiting until the new stadium season before really mixing it up and resting on our ******* blind loyalty, get ****ed.

Looking at the players ESFC have had the last few years and now compared to us makes me want to puke.

We are light years behind ESFC and MV in a capped competition lol go figure.

It was the second half where we were bad. We competed and outplayed them in the first half. Should of scored at least 1 possibly 2. If it happens in league games then we have serious problems but until then I'll give Babbel the benefit of the doubt.I don't think it's all doom and gloom...just not very good at the minute.....lol Conceding 10 goals for none scored in our last three games is a worry though....lol

    some thoughts.....

    - we should be playing our games at penrith except for derbies. I freely admit that I got it wrong voting for spotless back when we were asked. massive mistake. there are negatives about playing at penrith to be sure but on balance it is streets ahead of the hell hole we are in.

    - first half mini baccus and grozos did a great job breaking up play and preventing ball to feet to their front players - second half they were faced with much more movement and short passing stuff and struggled to cope. understandable given age, experience etc - good learning experience for both I would imagine

    - nizic is trash - can't have an old school lumbering GK who isn't comfortable with ball at feet anymore - those days are gone.

    - as expected the local plod still have no idea how to handle football. massive overkill in numbers and stupidly rushing in mid game to remove people. they have learnt nothing and that article during the week about 'changing approach based off low arrest numbers' is PR bullshit

    - for a socceroo regular risdon is so mistake prone it is ridiculous. i find him as maddening as any player we have had and he makes me long for Neville's majestic crosses in to row Z.

    - quality work by majok just running around sliding everyone in his 15 minute cameo

    - on balance of play we were OK, created chances and dominated sections of the game - goals were very preventable though. coughing up possession in dangerous areas is always going to make a defence look bad but tarek got caught ball watching really badly for the first goal.

    - trying to escape the panfers car park post match was horrendous.

    - looking at where we are at and what other teams have done, it's hard to confidently predict who we will finish above except for perhaps wello - long season incoming

    - biggest positive was catching up with mates I hadn't seen for a while

It is admirable and the right thing to do for the long term to build the academy and develop the best youth players in the country and bring the best into the  first team squad over time . But we still need to be competitive every season  to do that  even in a salary capped mickey mouse league like the A league you need a good scouting system and spend $$$$$$ . We seem do miss out on both fronts here.  It remains to be seen how competitive the smurfs are this season , but they lost key players at the end of last season and seem to have recruited decent replacements.

Its not rocket science !!!! whats wrong with the people running WSW ???

Fan loyalty will only go so far, putting up with crap which seems to be every season  recently has a use by date as far as the fans are concerned.

First half we held our own, dominated in parts and looked positive.

Send half awful. It seemed the minute they went up a gear we didnt know how to respond. They took control and that was it.

We still panic on the ball when pressued by the opposition. We need composure and determination to play our way out of some of those pressure moments. I've said for a while now that improving our mental game was one area that could make a difference for us on the pitch. I'd like to know if the club have engaged a sports psychologist. It is crucial to get some self belief, confidence and resilience into the lads.

I've said since the start of pre-season, that we aren't a top 4 side.

We copped 7 in last 2 weeks, against sides which may compete for top 4 spots

Defence has been & will continue to be our biggest issue

"Defence has been & will continue to be our biggest issue"

This plus our middle plus our attack...and to add to that we are not even fit enough to compete for 90 minutes. What the hell have our coaching staff been doing for the last 3 months? bludging it seams like most of our players.

I said here after the Darwin game that i wasnt worried, so long as we show progression and an upward curve towards the start of season all will be ok.

The preseason has been totally random and there doesnt seem to be a plan towards the opening rounds? Few players missing...a couple injured of course but yesterday you would have expected to see pretty much ready for round 1. TE out of position not helpful but a necessity which shows how far we have to go.

Early days and some players to come in but we look no more than a 5th to 7th placed side, very disapointing if the case.

It’s not so much we don’t spend money it’s that we piss it away on wrong players

Last year in particular we spent money, this year and season before last, maybe we haven’t

Babbel will have to coach us to “whole being better than sum of parts” as our squad individually isn’t that strong

I blame Grant's haircut....delayed shock by our players on how anyone could possibly think that hair was ok......typical smurf dirty tactics...lol

In our derby in a few weeks time I expect to see Brosque go the full on Peter Garret look.

Depth is one of the many problems, look at the Clubs that have success one comes off and another slots in, if we lose a few all of a sudden we are shuffling deck chairs playing players out of position.  If Vedran is out our back up is not Association level, Ziegler out and Elrich is simply not a centre back, I would of thought Risdon to centre and Elrich out wide would of been a better option but I'm not the gaffa.  If Riera is looked after by the opposition and doesn't score then noone else is consistently capable. Roly, Sotirio, Bacchus and even Llorentte are just too inconsistent, we see one good game and 6 poor ones.  That's not all the problems but its a start.

    Link to comment

It's such a simple solution that's the frustrating part.

Get rid of these legacy players like Sotirio who have been holding us back and allowing lesser teams to enjoy wins....

But classic WSW 'hey let's sign Mahazi'.

I don't know what's worse - holding up a sign demanding a coach be sacked then walking out to sook in the carpark or just plod along handing over membership $$$ year after year while the club says 'these mugs don't care who we sign they'll still pay their money'.

Western Sydney is football heartland we should be so far in front it isn't funny - I know one day it'll be like that (and we can go back to being the loudest most unbearable fans) but until then it's just another season of mediocrity you can see it already.

I also found it interesting our jersey's yesterday had our new sponsor Centuria on them but club have yet to announce it, right?

Who watches Josh Sotirios first touch go off his shin for a goal kick and thinks you know what I might invest in a unlisted commercial property fund?

    Unlimited maybe?

Rudan: Runs onto the field at full-time to berate an attacker for a goal coughed up by the two fullbacks being lazy, then slates him in a post-game interview and the press conference.  Sure, he apologised for "singling him out", did he apologise for singling out the wrong player to start with? The Mariners & Nix finished 5th & 6th in 21/22 when Rudan took over. Rudan's second year we finished 4th then lost to the smurfs in Round 1 while the Mariners won the Grand Final. 3rd year, CCM are the favourites for the Premiership, the Nix have a chance if CCM drop points, and we're back in 6th with a game tomorrow against a team who beat us 7-0 earlier in the season that if we lose we're out of the finals spots, and even if we made it, we're probably just going to lose to Victory in Week 1. I'm so over this ****. Rudan has had three years and done **** all to improve things, he's not done well enough to add all this pointless drama and bullshit.
    • Does he miss the next match?
    • Couldn't they just play their NPL team? it would have been unlikely ADL would have beaten them as well
